Re – trimming the length of the eps: I noticed (via my tapes of ST:TOS) that from the mid-1960’s to the mid
1990’s “hour long” TV eps have gone from 50 minutes content to barely 45 minutes content. My mind
boggles and my pulse races when I think of what you could have done with an extra 5 minutes per show.
Over the four seasons of B 5, that’s nearly 10 extra shows! (Plus, an extra 10 minutes of content in the pilot
movie.) It would allmost make the concern over the 5th season unecessary.

I hate to continue this line, but I felt compelled to write my opinion. I think it is great that B5 was
mentioned (and that Scott Adams wanted B5 on the cover). One could take it as a slam, however, no
mention would have been far worse.

Dilbert put B5 right up there with the big boys (whether you like the other shows or not is irrelevant). All
the shows mentioned have had an impact on TV viewership – and I sure am glad that Scott Adams thinks
enough of B5 to satirize it. I’m not a betting person, but I’d wager that Scott Adams watches B5.

Sorry, people, if my question about the _Aeneid_ has caused irritation. (I’m just guessing, from the postings
of Macboy Leo and ACME BUYER.) As I said, I’m new to this board, and so have no way of knowing if
this is an old topic. For what it’s worth, “influences” doesn’t have to mean lack of originality. It can mean
education, for one thing, along with inspiration. An *enormous* amount of brilliant and important art
(painting, drama, poetry, opera, music, sculpture) has been inspired and influenced by the _Aeneid_ (to
name only one poem), and none of it is “unoriginal.” B5 is obviously an “original idea,” and it is filled with
even more “original ideas.” But “originality” doesn’t mean operating in an intellectual vacuum. If this
particular question is not of interest to you, please ignore it. Believe me, I don’t want to start a scuffle,
much less imply insults to anybody’s artistic concepts or intents.

There was a slight slip-up, my fault…I trimmed Franklin’s line, which was originally (and these aren’t
necessarily the right numbers) “It’s been 14 days since Captain Sheridan left for Z’ha’dum and was presumed
killed…9 days since Mr. Garibaldi disappeared.” The 14 days would have incorporated travel time. By
taking out “left for Z’ha’dum” I accidentally changed the timeframe.

WB has always shown new episodes almost exclusively during sweeps periods (November, February, May,

There cannot be a short period since by contract WB must renew at 22 episodes per season.

tribute to him or B5. The character of Dilbert has never been known for his good taste, so any TV show he
likes has got to be bad. What better way for Scott Adams to say it????”

Nope. Your interpretation is your own, and utterly incorrect. Scott Adams is a HUGE fan of the show, has
said as much elsewhere, has given us additional quotes for use in PR, and will be doing a cameo on the
show next episode filmed. He’s under a very tight schedule, but he very much wants to come appear on the
show to demonstrate his support.

So it’s your interpretation that’s whacky.

Something that has been bothering me for a while (like since I first saw Messages From Earth):
When Sheridan and Delenn are on the White Star, and Sheridan is cought between the proverbial “rock and
a hard place”–firing on the Agammemnon(sp?) or being destroyed by the Shadows, the camera is on
Delenn for several long seconds. She seems to be in quite the dilemma, and holding out on Sheridan some
vital information. When Sheridan figures out what to do, I get the feeling she’s “off the hook” some how
and only then does her mood change. With all the stuff we now know that Delenn has been holding back, I
can’t figure out what she’s thinking about in that scene. The info seems to deal with how to escape from the
current situation. Is there something still to come dealing with this, or have I missed something here?
Thanks for being here….

Hi JMS,

I have a question on the 2 books “Creating Babylon 5″ and “The A-Z of Babylon 5″ both by
David Bassom (great books by the way).

I was talking to someone at one of the places I buy my B5 stuff from yesterday and they mentioned that they
were unable to get any additional “Creating” books as it was being updated
with Season 3 & 4 material.

Is this correct? Are revised “Creating” and maybe the “A-Z” books (I heard that Dell was planning on
publishing this one here in the US) in the works?

Thanks,

Backtracking within all this for a minute….

If anyone has any illusions about television, how a show is made, and what the tv execs really think of
viewers and their collective intelligence, try and find a copy of “Phoenix Without Ashes” by Ed Bryant and
B5’s conceptual consultant, Harlan Ellison. It opens with an Ellison essay called “Somehow, I Don’t Think
We’re In Kansas, Toto”, which tells the thoroughly sordid tale of the utter disembowelment of a lovely idea
for a series. Harlan’s written much about the evils of television, but this one’s particularly germane to the
discussion.

Read it, and marvel that JMS has been able to get so much depth and dimension into an arena controlled by
so many peanut-brained, short-sighted colonic drips.

And be thankful that sometimes, somebody slips one by the suckers.

I would imagine the main goal of a TV executive would be to put on a show that will be successful and
make a ton of money. If a great majority of successful shows on TV are junk, which I think they are, don’t
blame the executives, blame the public at large who watches them. Some big fans of B5? Dilbert. Uh huh.
And Howard Stern. What might be “depth” to one person is merely a wading pool to another….

Do you make it a policy not to become too intimately friendly with any of the actors on your show. Or do
you socialize with them and consider them good friends? The reason I ask is, because you’re writing the
outcome of everything, controlling the characters and what happens to them. If you happened to be a good
friend of so and so and then that character is going to be killed off, would your friendship with that person
make you think twice about killing the character off, which could jeopardize your friendship with them? Or
do you distance yourself somewhat from emotional involvements etc. with the actors?

It’s somewhere in-between. I hang out with the cast at lunch, visit on the set, and have done the occasional
casual social thing (dinners and the like) with nearly all of them, because there’s always the “writers and
actors, we’re all in it together” aspect to it, we share a certain creative bent, but in the end I’m still their
employer and no matter how much I (or they) might like to have a certain closeness and casualness, that
word still gets in the way.

Still, we’re very friendly with each other, they can (and sometimes do) come to me with problems or areas
where I can help, we hang out as much as we can…they’re a good bunch.

one of the characters to my friend who watches the shows with me and her response was she’ll quit watching
it if that happens. Since Susan’s face is prominently featured in the promo I’m very worried – Susan being

In “Revelations”, Franklin says he tried to reach Garibaldi’s next of kin without success. I began to wonder
exactly why that might be. Now, if the only family Garibaldi had left was, say, a distant cousin, Franklin’s
failure to reach them is understandable. If, on the other hand, he has brothers or sisters, or if his mother is
still alive, one begins to wonder if his family is purposefully ignoring him, perhaps because of his past
problems. (It does seem that we are supposed to get the idea that no one outside of B5 gives a damn what
happens to Garibaldi.)

So, is his mother still alive? Does he have any siblings?

Season 4 spoiler info.

I’ve read the promos on the Spoiler Junkies Page…there is no mention of anyone other than Cartagia dying.
Since this would seem to be important, I think the promo is misleading – it merely refers to Ivanova being
sent with Lorien to find the First Ones, instead of staying with the rest of the fleet..

Well, on 90210 they advertised that the gang would “lose one of their own”. They showed a gun going off.
It was someone in their class who I had never heard of before. Sure, he was “one of their own”- but they
clearly implied that it was one of the regulars- and they lied.

Frankly, ANYONE in the Army of Light is one of “Sheridan’s own”. They could pick Lt Pudnocker,
Sanitation Engineer Third Class- and be technically true to the ad, but still lie to us by implying one of the
regulars.

Maybe even Corwin.

JMS, just wondering – in “Falling Toward Apotheosis” when Cartagia & Londo go into the ‘Shadow

Nice to be a

Subj:ect…..

FemBlondie and Rue, I’d urge you to find the essay. True, an exec’s job is to put on hit shows, and make
beaucoups money on advertising revenue. Also true is the fact that the Great Unwashed’s appetite for
worthless trash seems insatiable.

However….Harlan’s point, one echoed by many others and proven — to some extent — by the success and
longevity (relative, I know) of B5, was that execs inevitably and genetically err on the side of greatly
underestimating what the Great Unwashed is capable of grasping and understanding. And they also fail to
acknowledge that there are many people with intelligence out there who would, if given a choice during
their prime viewing hours, watch a show with intelligent writing, coherent plots and superb acting. But no
one will take a chance on promoting one and pushing for a great time slot. ‘Cause ignorance still
outnumbers taste.

Happens in all apects of the mass media. Best example I can think of is “Blade Runner”. In initial
screenings of the original cut, execs were squirrely about audience reaction to the film, and finally
pussywhipped Ridley Scott into tweaking it a bit and adding a voice-over narration because they felt
audiences wouldn’t understand it. Now, I think that both versions work — I never knew of the original’s
existence until it was released several years back, and loved the movie I first saw. But to presume that the
audience who would go to see the movie would fail to understand the brilliantly-told visual tale that was the
original cut is patently ludicrous, and says far more about the exec anti-mentality than about the audience.

So again, I say we should marvel that B5, in all its glorious integrity, has made it so long with so few
evident compromises, and hope like hell that we can finish the arc in the way JMS intends.

Ride safe, all.

I went thru all of issue #95 of the Zocalo and found no such announcement listed there. Can you tell me
*where* in the newsletter it is? Obviously it’s an unfounded and unconfirmed rumour since it wasn’t front
page news nor was it accompanied by an official statement from Warner Brothers, jms or anyone else
connected with the show. I would expect that if/when such news is handed down, the PTB will make sure
it’s posted where everyone can see it — like B5 Online putting it up on the main menu *or* some sort of
press releases from either Pigdog or jms as in the past.

Once again, we need to remain calm about this stuff — everytime we get near renewal time, people lose their
heads and all sorts of rumours start flying. Until we see something *official*, I would say take it with a very
large grain of salt.

Look at it this way: he’s been going non-stop for more than ten years now; battling network executives,
assuaging irate fans, writing his fingers to the bone, poring his heart out into everything he’s doing just to
see his brainchild become a reality (and possibly make a few people smile and, hopefully, a few more
people think). I’m not saying I don’t want a fifth season–I very much want a fifth season. And I’ll definitely
be one of the first to start writing letters. But I get tired just looking at what the man’s been doing all these

Joe–

You’ve said time and again that you plan to get out of television once B5 wraps, be that this season or next,
and returing to writing prose. I was wondering, if the unthinkable happens and godsforbid, the show gets
cancelled, would you consider including B5 in that prose? As you’ve commented continually, if WB pulls
the plug this season, you’ll have to eliminate story arcs. Would you consider novelizing them? Given the
success of the Star Wars novels(and you’re certainly a finer writer than Tim Zahn), I can’t imagine them not
selling well. I’ve noticed B5 mentioned more and more in print recently(including Jerry’s trip to NASA, in
NEWSWEEK), so someone in the media has picked up that B5 is a good thing.

I’m wondering this for purely selfish reasons, because I care about these characters, and would love to hear
about Delenn giving birth, John and Delenn’s wedding, etc, etc, etc…Nearly every time I read a book, I
wonder “what happens next?” Granted, there is such a thing as beating a dead horse, but the B5 universe is
full of interesting stories to tell. I couldn’t write a novel(although I’ve been trying ever since I was
fourteen), and I certainly couldn’t write 25+ consecuative episodes of television(bows in respect). If
“Sleeping in Light” is good(as I fully expect it to be), I shouldn’t have to wonder. But even if I shouldn’t, I
probably will.

Spoilers for LONG NIGHT

Just saw Long Night on Wednesday. Wonderful! I especially loved the scene between Ivoneva and
Sheridan at the first because, for me, it added another layer to Susan’s character.
I read the Lurker page =after= I watch an episode, and saw your veiled comments there about Vir. As an
aspiring writer myself, I love/hate when a character turns to me and says, “I should be doing this.” I’m
looking forward to seeing how Vir deals with this.
QUESTION: G’Kar’s been through a lot of changes since the first season. In G’Kar’s last scene, when the
other Narn called him a coward and asked, “What have you endured?”, did G’Kar surprise you with his
reaction when he turned and walked away laughing? I could be wrong, but the old G’Kar might have wiped
the floor with the Narn..
Thanks!

If I’m not pushing too hard here (and if I am, I apologize) will the TNT broadcast be letterbox, or will the
letterbox version be held for video release?

Second question, if I may:
In writing those sections of your scripts where characters speak in Minbari, do you have an overall structure
of the language in mind, or do you create it as needed? If the former, will you ever release a “textbook”?

Thanks for a marvelous show,

Dear JMS
Thank you so much for this show!. I cannot believe how interesting you have made it. I look forward to
hearing you speak at a Con sometime.
As a language teacher, I appreciate so much that you have allowed languages other than English to flourish
in the galaxy. I loved Marcus’ line “who knew they were French?” and the scene of Garibaldi translating
Narn with an electronic dictionary. Now, will you have a school open on B5 sometime. I have missed the
aspect of other family types. The episode with the parents and the sick child was so outstanding.
Thank you Merci beaucoup Danke and any other ways to say thanks for an outstanding series. Hope you
get a rest sometime! Capercaillie

Did anyone else notice that some of the signs from Into the Fire where in previous episodes?

The scene shot with Delenn and the grey council. Wasn’t that scene in “Severed Dreams”?

That scene when that saucer object fires stuff wasn’t that in “Shadow Dancing”?

I think JMS did this because this was the third major turn in the story and he wants to keep it confidential.
Does anyone have any guesses about how these scenes from previous epsidodes are used in this one?

I kind of keep it in my head…if I use a word, I try to remember or write down the meaning so I can slowly
build up a dictionary. The language has definite rules to it; it has a somewhat Germanic structure to it.

There were two different promos in the episode I saw. The first promo airred after, I believe, the third act.
This one had a voice over for the new episode, but, was full of scenes from previous episodes. The second
promo, which was shown at the end of the episode, had scenes from Into The Fire.

If Erickson was captured and not killed, the Shadows would know it was a trick.

However, it did prove what I expected- somebody we never heard of before is sacrificed.

This does not in any way reduce the sacrifice- but the ads did sort of imply that it was someone we knew, a
regular.

I’m glad we didnt actually see the battle- hearing just the voice was so much more effective. Letting the
viewer’s imagination fill in the details is how Hitchcock worked- and its cheaper and usually more effective.

Our Fox affiliate used to carry B5 but dropped it in favor of various UPN losers (that I hear they HAD to
carry if they wanted to syndicate Voyager). Recently, I was happy to find that my cable company had
picked up a WB station that carried B5 on Sunday nights. By this time the 4th season had started and I had
some catching up to do on what happened on Z’ha’dum and what led up to Sheridan’s trip to that dark world.

I didn’t think it was possible, but the brilliance I’ve seen from the late 3rd and early 4th season eps have
outshone what I thought was perfect storytelling from two seasons ago. I can’t wait until TNT (is that the
right Turner network?) begins carrying B5 in reruns. I have a LOT of catching up to do. :) :)

Posted on: America Online

Hi JMS,

I just saw an episode where Susan describes how her mother commits suicide, and her relatives tell her that
her mom went to heaven. Well, unless Susan and her relatives are Jews for Jesus, which is a valid option I
suppose, this is extreemly out of character. There is no Heaven for a Jew. Jews believe that when you die
you will meet God and he will judge you. After that, who knows? Its not as comforting as Heaven, but
that’s that..

I know that you are very busy person, but the entire concept of a suicide in a Russian Jewish family could
have some very significant culteral ramifications for Susan’s character. Maybe in your universe everyone
has worked this out just fine, and there is no stigma, but I long for your writing in the first two seasons
where you did your homework that incorporated the past and the possiblity of the future to make a living,
breathing, dynamic universe.

I guess the reason I’m making a big to do out of a minor thing is that Susan is the first non steriotypical Jew
I’ve seen on mainstreem TV. She is a well drawn character that deserves the attention you originally put
into creating her.

take care,

Subj:: Re: Heaven
Date: 2/6/97 8:54:15 AM
From: Jon Cohn

There is indeed a heaven according to the Jewish bible. It was created at the same as earth (Genesis 1:1)
and was separated from earth on the second day (1:7-8). It’s a little confusing since Heaven is also the name
of the firmament (that means curtain) which separates the waters above from the waters below. Anyway,
God, being omnipresent has Heaven as his throne and earth as his footstool.
Anyway, when people die, they go to a place call Sheol, which is the Jewish version of Hades. Sheol is
referred to in numerous psalms and prophesies, such as Psalm 18:5 and 86:13, and unfortunately I don’ t
have time to find more references.
So to make a long story short, according to numerous prophesies throughout the Old Testement, especially
in Isaiah and Ezekial’s Temple vision and the twelth chapter of Daniel, God isn’t going to leave everybody
who dies in Sheol, but will eventually cause it to give up its dead, then he’ll judge the wicked and so forth,
and establish an everlasting kingdom, whatevere that all means.
Anyway, the systems about to shut down, but if anyone’s interested, I’ll try and put together some details at a
later date.

If you read the 23rd Psalm ie “and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” You are both correct
concerning a “heaven”; my problem is the went away— We do not know if the “anti-telepathic drug” does
not if taken long enough indeed “kill” you; does anyone else remember that Susan’s mother was given the
“drug” by needle, who says “they- PsiCops” were not there for her “weekly/whatever” dose and she knew it
would be her last chance to see her child!! before she died or was totally out of it ie a coma; Suicide is not a

acting was phenominal. Anywho, my question now is: well basically what now??? It seems as though the
major part of the story is over. Of course there is still the conflict with Earth, but with all the other races
backing Babylon 5 should Earth be much of a problem, or is the EA and Nightwatch gonna be returning
with a vengence. I really hope so because I find the Earth conflict to be the most intriguing thread in
Babylon 5, and I love to hate the sinister Nightwatch and hope they return. So are we to assume that Earth

Okay My take on this:
1.) Heaven is a concept all of the audience has had at least some contact with. Therefore it makes sense to
use the term.
2.)She was talking to Sheridan who is not a Jew and therefore has no clue about the Jewish afterlife or how
it works. Heaven is used for ease of understanding. (I know I had to expalin to my Biblical lit class the

JMS has already said:

>> Not a chance. Remember, the entire first season we didn’t even *know* about the shadows, and the war
didn’t start until midway through year 2.

The fun is still coming. <<

That brings to mind a couple of questions…

1) Will we ever find out why none of the renegade EA ships took part in the Shadow War? Heck, being
exiled and on the run wasn’t a good enough excuse for the Narns. What excuse did the humans have?

2) It seems to me that what’s left of the White Star fleet is more enough to protect B5 from anything Clarke
can throw at it, and with Delenn still as Entil’zha, the ships are at B5’s disposal. Is that an accurate
assessment?

3) How long before all those aliens who got along so fabulously when fighting the Shadows start
squabbling again now that the First Ones are gone?
Yeah, yeah, I know better than to expect straight answers. The crooked ones are more fun anyway. :-)

Just finished watching Into the Fire. FABULOUS!! I love shows that know how to deal with shades of
grey. I did have a few questions though:

1) Why did the Vorlon appear in an encounter suit? Didn’t Kosh II make such things a moot point?

2) You only saw five of the First Ones leave for beyond the rim. Was the sixth destroyed in the fight?

3) Is Jason Ironheart what humanity will be when its time comes to leave for beyond the rim? Is that where
he is now?

Anyway, thanks again for a great episode and a great show. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

JMS,

While I love your writing…..I did not like this episode…….but then again I
liked “Grey 17″……

This was too easy of an out….
Gee, we tell them to get out and that we are big enough to take care
of ourselves, sacrifice a couple of ships and off they go?

Carrying that parent’s analogy a bit further…..I have known very few parents
who don’t keep butting into their kids’ lives as long as they exist……even if
they do move to Florida……

Maybe it’s me….I like the story of the people….you can keep the special effects….
still like the old Dr. Who….give me two tin cans and string…and I’ll make a phone.
Give some people a radio show and you can make people believe that the Martians
are coming.

One thing I did like was the soft, gentle voice of the Shadow creature…..

I don’t know if everyone is aware of this, but AOL is changing the formats for ALL the message boards, and
they are ugly, inaccessible, cumbersome and slow, to name a few. The change is very similar to internet
newsgroups. The change will soon come to Bab5 forum and it will appear suddenly and unexpectedly.
You will not be asked your opinion as to whether you want this change. It will just appear, probably within
the next month or so.

To view how other areas look with this change, go to keyword: The Great Debate, then click on messages,
then click on Soapbox – and feast your eyes. Newgroups! You can read how people in that forum hate the
changes by clicking on the folder: Feedback for New Message Boards.

Or you can visit the Writers Club and see how messed up all of their boards are. Or go to a software area
called Bethesda.

Point is, this change is a complete failure; no one likes it; we had no say as to whether we wanted our user-
friendly folders switched over to ugly newsgroups. It is a giant step BACKWARD for AOL – Compuserve
used this several years ago and that’s why I subscribed to AOL.

If you don’t want the new changes, if you like Bab5 just the way it is, email Steve Case with your feelings.
And email often. I’m emailing him every day. I encourage others to do the same. When they change my
last favorite area, including Bab5, I will cancel my longtime AOL account and find one that’s more friendly
– or just get a local provider and be done with it.

I hate to post an “answer” here, but to be rather Vorlon-ish:

Why not?

All “Republic” means is “by/for/of the people”. The Centaurum appears to be much like a senate. As long as
the people are represented, then it’s a Republic.

The Romans, after all, still refered to it as a Republic for some time *after* the death of Ceasar Augustus.

Thats not true. From what I can see, what Sheridan said to Delenn in Z’Ha’Dum about going to Z’Ha’Dum
changing the future might be wrong. Delenn probably said not to go to Z’Ha’Dum because she didn’t want
him to just have 20 years to live.

Playing the devil’s advocate, not all of the time flashes came true. The one that Sinclair and Garibaldi had
about the Shadows attacking Babylon 5 never happened.

But remember, Morden said that he would get back at Londo for blowing up the island. The keepers may
be that revenge. But that raises another question…if the Shadows and any other First Ones are gone and
won’t come back, who are these keepers? Care to shed some light on the situation, JMS?

My bet is, since Morden had said that the shadows have “Allies”…ie Earth gov. and/or PsiCorp.,
This is where the “Keepers” come into play. They seem to be a product of PsiCorp. research.. “you forgot

is more fighting between the new races that will come down to the Narn, Earth, Minbar, with Centari Prime

What if…instead of not changing the timeline as portrayed in “War Without End”…Sheridan, in going to
Z’Ha’Dum…ACCELERATES IT, so that Centauri Prime gets razed in 2261 instead of 2277? Everything
else happens within that frame instead of over 17 years…??

Now that Morden warned Londo that his associates had allies who would not be too happy with what he’s
done (when he nuked Celini Island)…hey, it could happen this way…and as far as Centauri Prime is
concerned we’re still in the “many possible futures” phase.

— I noticed many Minbari cruisers at the battle. Did the warrior caste finally sign on with the Army of
Light and were they among the fleet, or was it still just the religious caste?
— Did Sheridan, in fact, change the timeline (as experienced in War Without End) as he had hoped before
he set off for Z’ha’dum? Or did he merely blindly stumble into the timeline he had hoped to avoid? It seems
the timeline was changed.

Thanks.

and should be sent away. Lorien is the image of an elderly parent who has the wisdom to let the young
people do their own thing. Also, beginning to like Londo(egad) who is growing up-he wanted the “highest
office in the land” now he has it and he don’t want it. The way he handled Mr. Morden’s “associates” is the
way we would have handled them in the same circumstance. Londo has become a patriot(like G’Kar) instead
of a leech who victimizes people-that might not last forever. Heres to staying for Season 5 for such
excellent work. Celt56

Although I understand your point, that really doesn’t make sense. The Shadows and Vorlons are like
parents, but now the parents have left and shouldn’t be coming back. They’re not going to have revenge on
their children, because they’ve moved on, they shouldn’t care anymore. So, even if the Shadows have allies,
they probably won’t use them because they’ve moved on, they’ve left that galaxy and gone beyond the great

In my opinion, thats a hard question to answer. I mean, some things mentioned in WWE already couldn’t be
true. Remember the conversation between Sheridan and Delenn in Sheridan’s cell:
Delenn: Then you don’t know what has happened.
Sheridan: From what Londo said, we won, but not completely.
Delenn: No, you can never win completely, there are always new battles to be fought against the dark side.
But we accomplished out everything we set out to do, we created something that will last for a thousand
years.

Now, if you remember, after Sheridan came back from Z’Ha’Dum, he changed what he set out to do, it
wasn’t to just stop it for a thousand years, it was to stop it forever. And from what I can tell, he
accomplished that, but Delenn said for a thousand years. So, there’s a change in the timeline. Also, if its
true what Delenn said about there always being new battles to be fought against the Dark Side, who is this
dark side? It can’t be the Shadows since they left.

JMS, are these just mistakes in writing that you accidentally put into the script that we picked up on, or do
these things I mentioned have any significance?

I have a problem with the Shadow’s cloud that made it “too cold” for the fleet. It’s already 3 degrees Kelvin

TedKWade- space itself HAS no temperature. The 3K you are refering to is the cosmic background
temperature- but spacecraft in orbit can have a difficult time shedding heat.

I would think in this case there was a general energy dampening field- sucking the heat from the spacecraft.
The spacecraft themselves would operate just fine in an absolute zero area, because they themselves are not
at absolute zero and could certainly turn on the heaters.

Dear JMS;
Thank you, thank you, thank you for B5. I love a great story.
3 questions for you:
1–Have J &D had time to do any more of the Minbari watching ritual thing and the audience simply hasn’t
been in on it? There has been no mention of it for quite a while. . .
2–Lorien refers to himself as being “born” as the first sentient being in the universe. Who/what bore him
and the other First Ones? Is he referring to some creative process that doesn’t involve biological
reproduction?
3–Lorien tells Susan that the idea that love and companionship are eternal is an illusion. But then all the
older races go off “into the sunset” together, presumably to hang out with each other, if not eternally, for a
long, long, long time. Will they not be talking to each other for the rest of their lives? PLUS he tells
Sheridan that if their races survive, he and the other First Ones will be waiting for them beyond the Rim.
But the younger races lifespans are so short (so that they will appreciate their gift of life) that I can’t figure
out how that would ever be possible, and if it were possible, that there would be any point to it. Did I miss
something?
IMHO, Lorien might know a lot, but he doesn’t know everything! For instance, he’s never been dead, so
how does he know whether love survives death?
Once again–thank you. No other story has touched me in quite the same way.

JMS has shown advancement in and of itself cannot make a race or civilization survive. You must have a

This answer may not be a 100% correct, but since JMS hasn’t answered it yet, I figured I’d give it a shot.

As anyone who’s seen both the edited for TV and the letterbox versions of Star Wars will tell you, the
difference between the two is drastic. You miss entire characters on the sides. To compensate for this, when
they edit a movie to fit on a TV screen they basically make a copy of the original film with a camera who’s
lens is of the correct proportion for a TV screen. In order to catch all of the action they sometimes have to
“pan and scan” the original film. (For instance when two characters are talking but they on opposite sides of
the screen. They will pan to the one on the left while he is talking then pan to the right when she is talking.
Otherwise you’d just hear this voice while the camera focused on only one of the characters.)

This is the process that they apparently have to do for B5 since it is shot in letterbox but edited to fit on
your screen. Judging from JMS’ comments they don’t edit all of the scenes together in letterbox (with
special effects, etc) in letterbox format except for the European copies. So while all of the master film is
indeed shot in letterbox, the final U.S. film appears to be dupilcated and edited in the full-screen TV
version.

Again, all of this is how I understand it to be. I’m sure some of my facts are in error and perhaps JMS or
someone more familiar with video editing can shed more light on this.

(rightfully) is a BIT tired of explaining the literary origins of plot points – there are probably better forums

To me, it seems JMS enjoys more of a discussion of the work at something closer to face value, without so
much literary disection.

As JMS said

Far from being over…Maybe we’ve seen the last of the shadows, maybe, but think of all those loose ends
that have been deliberately left? The Earth conflict, psi-corp and the minbari warrior cast. Remeber in “Into
the fire” Morden threatens Londo, the Shadows have allies. Remember a season 2 episode with that thingy
travelling to Zahadum, feeding on bodies in suspended animation. The nightmare future for Londo in “War
without end”. There is still alot of story to tell. With B5, just when you think the story has finished, it ducks
and takes a new and more exciting turn.

When people compare the works of two brilliant writers it does not have to be taken as an insult. Personally
if I wrote a book or did a TV series I would be delighted to be compared to either jms or Tolkein. However
I can understand jms frustrations at the comparison. Some of these border on accusations of plagirism, and
that is stupid. When I compare the two I don’t try to put down either.

The main comparison I make between the two is the vices of the characters. Both writers have created
believable characters. Characters whose faults make them more real. I don’t see how anyone can be
offended by that(jms included). Believable characters are the heart and soul of any good piece of fiction.

As Tolkein himself said, and I think jms would agree.
“don’t ask to see the bones boiled to make the soup”. The overall story is what matters, and we don’t have a
clue about the future storyline for B5. So lets wait on the comparisons and get to work on the compliments.

Thank you for a wonderfull show jms!

My problem with the questions about JMS’ influences is the volume of those type of questions in the past
few months. The problem this presents is that the millions of viewers out there who have read millions of
different books and stories are each wondering if this one man has read the same million of books and
stories.

It’s gotta stop somewhere.

I say just enjoy the show for what it’s worth and if you find something in the show which reminds you of
something you’ve seen or read, then great. But don’t fill the Ask JMS log with those questions. Perhaps we
could create a separate folder for those type of questions. We might also want to create a folder about
religion and B5 (if there isn’t already.) This way JMS is free to know what he’s getting into when he opens
each folder. It would make more sense if the questions in here were more about the show in a general sense,
such as “How long does it take you to write the script” or “That was a great idea you had with the Vorlons
and Shadows going their own way, but where do we go now.”

While the name of this folder IS “Ask JMS” I can only imagine how intimidated he must be sometimes by
the shear number and variety of questions. And we can see which ones he tends to respond to. Which should
be a hint at what type of questions he wants to read in this folder.

That’s my 2 cents for this week.

Geez! Calm down. The only reason I asked this question was because when the similarity occured to me
awhile after watching the episode, I like the correlation and similar themes. I was curious so I thought I’d
ask. Now I’m sorry I did, if I’d now it’d be such an offense to everyone that I was trying to find some diffrent
angles and more meaning in a story I liked (trying not to lay my sarcasm on too deeply here). I always like
to find fresh ways of looking at something, too give a story so interesting as much depth as is there to find. I
am a writer myself and I’m delighted when I can find connections to a story that make it richer, and hope I
could do so well myself.
Now if this happens to offend JMS, fine. But it was as valid a question as any. And as was pointed out,
this board is for asking JMS questions. Not for aruging over which ones should be asked.
I had to get that out of my system.

I have just re-discoved this folder after not being able to sign on for weeks, and I gotta ask this question. If
it has already been asked (and answered), and someone knows, any help would be appreciated.
In WWE II Lando blames Sheridan for the descruction of Centari Prime for “His (Sheridan’s) war.” Is that
possibly a different war? Sine the Vorlons and Shadows appear to have rimed out, it seems to me that 17
years is a loooooooooonnnnnnnng time for the agents of the Shadows to strike back at Centari Prime. So,
might there be a different war? This is not a story idea, but a question.

Also, I have to congradulate you on the last couple of episodes. I have never seen anyone with the courage
to kill off so many interesting characters in such a short time. Frankly, I will miss Cartagia, Morden,
Lorien, Shadows and Vorlons. But, rest assured, I will keep watching, because one reason I like B-5 is that
it doesn’t stand pat. It is always changing. For every character we lose today, I am sure their are new ones to
follow. And I can’t wait to meet them.
By the way, the actor that played Cartagia (the names escapes me right now) was great. I will miss him the
most, he was so easy to hate, but you loved him for that.

Thing is, with the exception of Lyta, I doubt there is anyone left who even knows where the Vorlon former
homeworld is; nobody ever returned from Vorlon space ( which, as I understand it, is fairly large), so I
guess it is an unexplored part of the galaxy for the younger races. Lyta does not seem to inclined to aid
scavenging expeditions, as we saw in Epiphanies, I think it’d be hard to force her to reveal the location of
the Vorlon homeworld; at the same time, I think she would make an inviting kidnapping target for those
who want to get their hands on advanced technology. Otherwise, they’ll have to go look for it…

So, we’re off to Earthbound conspiracies. This should be good.

Just a random thought: Suppose the Vorlons and Shadows aren’t just archetypes, but actual descendants of
humans and Minbari who have traveled back in time after evolving for aeons. (There’s a strong time travel
component to B5.) Suppose that they are a kind of manifestation of the myth of the Eternal Return, except
that one man — Sheridan — can break the cycle. Wouldn’t this be an interesting little twist in the series?

Date: 2/17/97 3:44:15 AM
From: SchnellJan
Posted on: America Online

Dear JMS:

I have been reading a few posts to you from people who think Delenn is weaker because of her relationship
to John. I just wanted to voice MY opinion. I think you have done a great job portraying Delenn as a
woman of strength, and as one who can have an emotional relationship. I have not witnessed any “I am a
poor helpless female scenes”, but rather, a realistic portrayal of relationships.

The best stories are the ones dealing with the emotional interaction of the characters. “Star War” hasn’t
endured because of the amazing special effects and breakthrough technology, it is the emotional drama
between Han and Leia, between Han and Luke, etc. that keep people watching.

I love the John and Delenn stuff (yes, I too belong to the J and D Forum), but what I like best is that the
show is more than just the Captain and Delenn, it’s an ensemble show, with characters who have created a
special bond.

Keep up the great work!

Subj:: Is Sheridan A Workaholic?
Date: 2/17/97 10:02:11 PM
From: BARRIEJ
Posted on: America Online

Hello JMS, I have some questions about John Sheridan’s state of mind. John Sheridan has been a wonderful
character to watch and I thank you for his many virtues, but I see a tendency in him that has been nagging at
me for some time and it recently came to a realization during Epiphanies.

spoilers for those who haven’t seen it.

/
/
/
/
When John said to Delenn (and I’m paraphrasing) “hey, sorry our relationship isn’t going anywhere, but
since the war ended, we’ve just been too busy.” And when she replied that he’s a problem solver who
wouldn’t have it any other way, I realized he could be a workaholic. He’s easily attracted and distracted by
problems to solve rather than delegating and growing in other areas. “Knives” (2 years ago) was the last
time he took any vacation. Workaholics love work, they love challenges, but all of this can isolate them
from relationships because relationships can’t be treated like a problem to be solved; it requires different
skills. I think he lacks those skills.

When he proposed to her, he said, don’t know when we’re going to get married, there’s this war on you
know. Maybe he forgot that he and Anna got married in the middle of the Earth Minbari war (according to
the B5 encyclopedia on the Lurker). So why that excuse?

We all create the conditions we have in our lives and I wonder if the Watching Ritual hasn’t been completed
because John isn’t ready for a relationship. He and Anna were more a part than together. He’s never
experienced the intimacy of a daily give and take and he’s scared. He says he wants marriage, but words
and actions are not the same thing. In Shadow Dancing, he sabotaged his chance at closer intimacy with
Delenn because he wasn’t ready. Now with Anna dead I suspect he’s using work as an excuse not to move
forward. Delenn is a woman with so much: brains, beauty, courage, a warm and loving heart who deeply
loves him and really wants a relationshp with this guy. I feel bad for her. She’ll be his best working partner
but will he really be a husband?

Three people have given John clues: Delenn (savor the moments for they will not come again) Franklin (the
moments are all we have, I’m alive) Lorien (just be!) but problem solvers don’t know how to just *be.* But
will he learn the lesson?

I know B5 is alot about prices we pay in our lives. I wonder if this another price Delenn, and eventually
David, will face: to have a husband and father who is a great hero for saving the galaxy but who isn’t there
emotionally? I know having a challenging job is important, but so is balance. I now understand why some
in the J&D Forum (Nutcase Romantics group) have sarcastically suggested David will be conceived via
immaculate conception; John is just not good relationship material — yet.

I hope I’m wrong about his workaholism, but the symptoms seem to be there and it makes him more of a
kind and good, but pathetic, man. What point is it to save the galaxy if you can’t relate to the ones who make
life worth living? You’ve said their relationship will have a lot of ups and downs, but before this story is
over I’d like to see them grow into a really good strong loving relationship rather than a dysfunctional one.
thanks for a great show with complicated characters.
I appreciate your feedback.

I too agree that Delenn is a strong woman.

And I thank you, JMS, for making Delenn:

Strong, courageous, honest, intelligent, humorous, wise, faithful, loving, compassionate, spiritual,
thoughtful, trustworthy and resilient. As well as beautiful.

I have never seen Delenn be obsessive or negative. She was naturally devastated by John’s death and that
was totally realistic. Even her thoughts of suicide are realistic, loosing someone you love can make you
want to give up, but she bounced back. That’s important.

She’s a great character. Thanks for creating her.

From: BARRIEJ

Hi JMS,

I have 2 questions about the Watching Ritual. one has to do with how it was shot, and the other
forgetfulness.

The Watching Ritual as shown in WWE part 2 and in Shadow Dancing are so similar (and in some parts the
same shots) that I wondered, was the entire thing shot and then divvied up between the two episodes, or did
each scene get shot at the time of each episode with just a portion of WWE part 2 attached into Shadow
Dancing?

The other question is the flashforward experience akin to a dream in that you might forget it afterwards?
That’s the only way I can see how Delenn would act as if she never saw her flashforward when the event
actually happended in Shadow Dancing.

Thanks

Joe, I’m sure that the last post you want to read right now is another “what about season 5?” post. But
*somebody* at Warner is doing lots of talking to local stations. I’ve been writing my lcal station to get the
scoop (as they’ve heard it). First I wrote and expressed support and the desire to see them air season 5. The
programming director responded with “Warner Brothers has confirmed that this season will be the last for
the series.” So I wrote back and asked, “Who says? According to the creator/executive producer/writer,
there’s been no final word.” Here was the reply.

“Notice of the series’ end after the current season came from Warner Brothers syndication
representatives…..those who sell Warner Brothers programming to local television stations. You can
address your letter to Scott Carlin, who heads syndication for the company. I wouldn’t expect a change in
the decision, as stations have already been told and have made other purchases to replace BABYLON 5.”

I know what you’ve said about “depends on who you talk to”. But this bit about making other purchases to
replace B5 is disturbing. We’re all trying to remain optimistic until we hear the word from you. What *is*
going on at WB?

Thanks for reading (and hopefully replying to) yet another message on this frustrating

Dear folks,

I am sorry to bring you bad news, but I was just forwarded the news that Stephanie Etmanski passed away. I
ask that you tell others who may not have net or email access. Also, I urge everyone to support Steph’s
charities, and register with the national bone marrow agency in thier own country.

During the time I knew Steph, we did talk about life and death and things of that nature. She would say to
you all, “Oh, don’t cry, you’ll make me cry!” Stephanie always prefered to direct energy to laughter, not
sadness, so let’s try to laugh when we can in her honor!

Stephanie did specifically ask that her birthday be remembered. Her birthday is July 17, the same as Joe
Michael Straczynski’s birthday, and that meant a lot to her. If you are at the Blackpool convention, or just
escaping the summer heat on that day, I ask that you raise a glass, eat some chocolate, toast the Great Maker
and remember Stephanie Etmanski that day.

My best wishes to you all,

I hate being the bearer of sad news, however, much as I wish the news was different, I cannot change it. I
received a late night message Thursday about one of the talented contributors for Orion Press that I must
convey. Stephanie Etmanski has passed away from
advanced leukemia following an unsuccessful bone marrow transplant attempt.

She had flown to Pretoria, South Africa on January 5th for the operation, after attempts to find a matching
bone-marrow donor in the United States were unsuccessful. She had the surgery on January 14th, however,
the attempt was too late. She died January 17th.

Her family wishes to pass along the message that all the kindness and support, the letters and cards that so
many sent her, were deeply appreciated. In one of her last letters to me, she told me that every card, every
letter, was a bright spot in her day.

Couple of quick questions:

Will any of our heroes who busted their butts to save the galaxy ever be acknowledged by their
respective homeworlds? Sheridan is an outlaw, Londo freed the Narn, Narn thinks G’kar was sitting on his
butt during the occupation, Delenn is an outcast, not to mention she’s dating who
the Minbari call the Starkiller.

Will Delenn And Sheridan’s relationship be Frowned upon by Earthers?

When the Delenn of the future told Sheridan not to go to Za’Ha’dum, was she refering to his second trip, and
not the first?

Has Sheridan ever bothered to tell Londo what the future has in store for him or Centauri Prime?

Hopefully all these questions and more will be answered in the next episodes of Babylon 5

especially the evil that (ahem) editors can do. It pissed me off just as much as the real thing does – so good

BTW, I was once PDP ModTV… now I am patiris@moderntv.com – a domain that may indicate why these

So thanks again, jms, for all of it, and best of luck with the rest of the vision. Now once again I pass beyond

executed that I could see the possibility that some neophyte viewers of *B5*, who wouldn’t realize the

I sort of doubt it. I think both of them need some time to be alone; I liken the ISN show to a mental rape of
sorts, and one that requires each of them to recuperate and reflect on their thoughts. Profound moments of
change often start out within oneself; only later does one have the strength to offer comfort to, and the trust
to receive comfort from, others.

I believe some mention was made of G’Kar having a fondness for “Earth women”. This was during the first
season I believe. There was also an implied relationship with Londo’s youngest wife, Mariel. In the pilot
he was more than interested with sex with Lyta to produce a telepathic offspring.

Hello JMS

I know you’ve gotten some flack about the editing in Epiphanies, and after getting over my own shock at the
scene and thinking about it, I just had a little observation.

Although I don’t write as much as you do, I know it’s easier to take out than to put in. In a perfect world,
every episode script would go in as you wrote it, but it doesn’t happen. Intellectually, I know that editing
takes place and no character has been spared this experience.

Yet, whenever I watch B5 epsiodes, again and again (and I’ve seen most at least 5 times and more) I’m
never *conscious* of editing. I never feel as if something is lacking in conversations or body language. It
appears seemless and so I forget about editing. It’s to your and the production dept’s credit that you do such
a good job that people forget editing is a reality. So forgive us if we get riled up, we’ve developed a taste
for perfection here! <g> And of course the advancement of the J&D relationship which so many have
waited so long to see happen……

It would be nice, for the video release (we still hope for vids), if the scene could be restored in its entirety
but I realize that may not be possible. <sigh>

Dear Sir,

As we all know, *Schindler’s List* is being broadcast by NBC tonight. This powerful film details one of the
pivotal events of European, and world, history and intellectual development. The Holocaust is, among
world events in this century, without equal in its effect on the course of Western civilization.

At the risk of drawing uncomfortable parallels, I wonder if there will be any future episodes wherein the
defeat and “extermination” of the Narns, reversed only in recent episodes, will be seen to have a similar
effect on Narn or Centauri, or possibly even Earth, history. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

No, Jefferson believed in revolution against tyranny(this is not to say that he didn’t act like a hypocrite and a
tyrant himself at points). The Shadows are like “The Wild One” of Marlon Brando: Q: What are you
rebelling against” A: “Whatcha got?” Even to an early pre-Libertarian like Jefferson(based as he was in
Physiocratic Economic(read Political Economy) without Reason and “Rules of Engagement” there is no
competition of ideas, but brute force. Jefferson’s attack was against the brute force of the state. To the
pragmatist Shadows, if brute force speeds the process up, then so be it. Jefferson’s achievement, and the
early achievement of the USA was that it got Celtic-Northwest European people to stop slaughtering each
other and to begin a nation free of the religious hatreds of the old country-aggravated by the Crown.
However, because of the continuing European influences(which certain, but not all parts of Europe have
outgrown) that vision was corrupted by the religious and ethnic wars against immigrants and the original
natives of the Continent. We may yet someday arrive at the goal of the Freedom Vision. Like Sheridan
made the point: Free from the thuggery of the Shadows and also free of the authoritarianism of the Vorlons.
Free to do as you want, without the threats of either the street mugger(The Shadows) or the Gestapo(The
Vorlons). Of course those two evils are easily switcheable.

Jefferson also was against the tyranny of a state supported religion; early colonial America was like the
folks in England supporting the “Church of England”- with TAX money. That must have grieved the
Quakers et al. Jefferson’s writings also espoused that you do not need a priest/minister/pastor to talk to
God.
Dear JMS, It appears to me that the leaders of the various races are “Deists”, believe in God (whatever

But what if there is 5 years? You then have another 22 episodes to do. Also, previously in one post you
mentioned how the number of arc episodes would increase year by year, and you mentioned that year 5
would be all-arc episodes. If you get a 5th year, will this still be true? Or will the main threads already be

Delenn knew she was leaving for Minbar, with the knowledge that her clan might stop her from coming
back to Sheridan. Did she push the 3rd night bit because it would give her leverage with the clan? Is it
tantamount to a wedding – once the ritual is completed, she is forever joined with Sheridan?

Since the episode has already aired in most locations, these questions cannot possibly be spoilers. Hope

BDSolomon,

Here’s what was taken directly from the Lurker’s Guide:

<<[[2/15]] The scene between Sheridan and Delenn on the White Star was edited.
“Was this your intention – to get a response from those of us who follow the Sheridan and
Delenn story line closely? Some how, I feel manipulated and very disappointed.”
Yes, as I sat in the editing room, I thought, “Hmmm…if I do this, it’ll get the Sheridan and
Delenn fans’ knickers all in a knot….”
Every scene goes through some editing…there is barely a scene we film that doesn’t get a
line or two or three snipped. Sometimes the edit is noticeable, sometimes it ain’t. The only
thing you can decide is, “Does this move the story along or not?” I was chasing about
another 20 seconds (which was all we’re talking about here), and the back-and-forth
didn’t really add anything to what was already in that scene. I treated it the same as I
would treat any other scene.>>

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ — Netter Digital Entertainment,
Inc. (Nasdaq: NETT) today announced that, pursuant to a news release issued by
Turner Network Television (TNT) and Bradley J. Siegel, president of TNT and
Turner Classic Movies, TNT has ordered the production of two all-new original
Babylon 5 made-for-television movies.
It was announced by TNT that the entire 88 one-hour episodes of the multi-
year story of the award winning science fiction series Babylon 5 kicks off in
January 1998 with a two-hour, original film “prequel.” “Babylon 5: In The
Beginning,” featuring the cast of Babylon 5 will film early this summer for
premiere at the January 1998 launch of Babylon 5, with a second two-hour
original film scheduled for production later this summer. TNT acquired the
exclusive cable rights to the series from Warner Bros. Domestic Pay-TV, Cable
& Network Features. The Babylon 5 films are being produced for TNT by series
creator, J. Michael Straczynski, in conjunction with Netter Digital’s Douglas
Netter and John Copeland.
In the release by TNT, Mr. Siegel said “TNT’s acquisition of Babylon 5
offers its millions of fans a unique opportunity to see the show’s original
dramatic arc through to its conclusion. Babylon 5 represents the type of
contemporary high quality programming we are now producing and acquiring at
TNT.” He went on to say, “The series’ young, loyal viewers will now have a
national home where they can watch their favorite series as a community,
rather than the fragmented viewing that syndication provides. We think this
helps make TNT very valuable to an important audience for us.” TNT is the
number one-rated cable network in primetime and currently seen in more than 70
million homes.
A statement was included in TNT’s release from Eric Frankel, Executive
Vice-President, Marketing, Warner Bros. Domestic Pay-TV, Cable & Network
Features, as follows: “Babylon 5 is a unique series with an incredible
following. Its current popularity and critical acclaim, along with these
world-premiere movies, will provide TNT with a great opportunity to launch the
series on its network.”
Douglas Netter, Chairman, President and CEO of Netter Digital, said, “We
are very pleased with Babylon 5’s new home at TNT and look forward to our on-
going relationship with TNT. This order for two Babylon 5 television movies
validates the Company’s strategy to build programming franchises with its
production properties.” He went on to say, “The response from Babylon 5 fans
around the world is expected to be very favorable.”
Babylon 5, the two-time Emmy award winner earned its place in science-
fiction history last year when it beat out Apollo 13, Toy Story, 12 Monkeys
and Deep Space Nine for the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation, the
most prestigious honor in the science fiction field. Babylon 5’s victory
marked the first time in the 43-year history of the Hugo Award that a
television series other than Star Trek and Twilight Zone was honored.
Netter Digital Entertainment, Inc. is a digital entertainment and
production company which utilizes high technology in creating television
series, movies, documentaries and multimedia productions. The Company
specializes in creating science fiction programming which combines live action
with computer graphics and is presently expanding its capabilities from being
primarily a production company into a broader-based, technology-driven
entertainment company. The Company currently produces the Hugo Award-winning
science fiction television series “Babylon 5″ with creator and executive
producer, J. Michael Straczynski.

I’m not sure if you ever saw it … or were of an age to remember it .. but one of the American POW’s during
Vietnam sent valuable information regarding torture back to American Authorities by “tapping out morse”
by blinking his eyes. That information was used in negotiations via the red cross to improve the conditions

B5 Online explained in another Message base that it was 88 Eps because that’s all that’s definite. If there is
to be 110 Eps, then TNT will run 110 Eps. As for the start date, I don’t think it means anything. Alot of
series, including all the new ST, starting syndicating old Eps long before they finished. Maybe this was their
answer to the Video Tape problem???<G>

Continuity problem??? Did Delenn say that she had been living with the whole enraged vengeance thing
for 10 years??? Shouldn’t it have been at least 14 since the first season started “10 years after the Earth-

Ahhh Lady T you know me too well to think I would have gotten this wrong. The tap code, buildt on a box
matix 5 across 5 down (delete the letter c – use k in it’s place) was developed for inter prison
communications … had the advantage of not only being capable of transmitting by rapping on something …
but by using as a “flash” by covering and uncovering a light source, or under doorway gap, or hand
movement. The POW’s taught each other it and drill themselves in it constantly. A very close family friend
(Capt G. Coffee, USN RET)often demonstrates by tapping out a message on a podium using the code
during a lecture. The message back to the states was done by blinking eyes .. since MORSE was a
KNOWN code to all American servicemen at that time.

Sorry for a history lecture that some may not appreciate… but … :^)

getting a fifth season?

Mr. Stracyznski,

I’ve been hounding the web for an understanding of your recent activities in light of your recent
comments about season 5. On CIS (as posted on Brent Barret’s webpage), you said that you had written up
through episode 14 of season 4, and that you needed to hear from WB before continuing, as it would
determine the direction of the storyline; ie: finish in 4 vs. continue through 5.

In the last three weeks, both the Spoiler Junkies Page *and* the Lurker’s Guide have added new episode
titles, Junkies up to Ep. 19, Lurker’s to 16. I’m curious as to whether these are tentative working titles, yet
to be written, or works in progress, awaiting filming. If the former, then I’m jumping to conclusions. If the
latter, then I must ask, – “What’s the deal?”. I can only assume that, based on these events, the new titles
imply that the die has been cast and the fork in the road has been chosen.

Could you please help my understanding in this matter?

Thank you for your time.

In the episode Z’ha’dum, Sheridan handed the electronic pad to Garibaldi, he told him to do exactly what
was on there, right? What if there was more on there other than “put two nukes on the WhiteStar” ? There
was all the talk about Garibaldi’s hunches and gut feelings and how Sheridan told him to do everything
exactly like it was on the list. Is it possible that there is some greater plan that only Sheridan and Garibaldi
know about? Probably not, (Like most people I think Psi-Corp is behind it), but you are a sneaky guy and I

Wayne Alexander and Kim Holly were both big hits – Wayne was very funny and informative – and Kim got
everyone (not just the fan costume-makers) oooo-ing and aaaaahh-ing at the outfits she brought along.

Everyone seemed to behave themselves – nothing too annoyingly “fan boy/girl” happened while I was

Too bad I can’t make it today for Caitlin Brown/Jason Carter/David Eagle/Bear Burge.

Over all, it was a very nice event.

There was no B5 rep at the programmer’s con…
THe TNT deal was for 88 episodes- 4 seasons not 5…
TNT is going to start the reruns in January- right when the 5th season would still be showing new
episodes…

All of the available evidence shows that there will be no 5th season. There is no evidence thus far that there
will be a 5th season. Based soley on the ACTIONS of WB, I would say they have constructively announced
the end of the show.

I welcome any information to the contrary. It may be true that there has been no official word, but all of the

Just a couple of points, I had read that the TNT deal was for 88 or 110 eps. As of right now there are only
88 first run eps contracted for (thru season 4) but if there is a season 5 then the TNT deal will be for the full
110. So this in my opinion is still open.

As to TNT starting to run the eps in January, it would not be the first time that a show has gone into
syndicated reruns while first run eps are still being shown. Again not proof that there will not be a season 5
in my opinion.

For my part I prefer to wait for official word from either JMS himself or from B5 Online as to the fate of
season 5. Both have always been very forward and up front with information in the past and I see no reason
to not expect them to be the same now. We as fans have done what we could to convince WB that the show
is worth keeping. So it’s just wait and see time.

Just my humble $.02 worth

>>

You’re entitled to your opinion.

In my opinion, all the latter buildup (end of 3rd season on) was setting the stage for a non-military solution.
The ep Shadow Dancing is a prime example. The AoL wins the battle, but at a high cost. Two AoL ships
destroyed for every one shadow ship.

At that point they could only have won with direct Vorlon intervention. Without that, the numbers do in the
AoL every time.

Once the Vorlons started rampaging, I suspected the AoL 1) was going to lose flat-out or 2) have to
negotiate their way out of the conflict. I surmized the good-guys were not going to acheive peace by use of
the sword.

Frankly, I’m quite pleased with the shadow war end; it takes some guts to end the war this way and have two
foundational elements (Vorlons and Shadows) leave the show completely. I don’t see anything like that
happening on Star Trek(one of the main problems with Star Trek – no changes, lots of booms). The B5
universe has changed in a fundemental way; the reprecussions from this are going to be amazing to watch.

Just my $.02 cents.

Now that the story line is going to be centered back on the conflict with earth, any chance that we’ll see
Kitty Swink guest star as the ambassador again?

Thanks!

In Season 3 we learn that Delenn’s father died of a broken heart after learning that humans and Minbari
were at war with each other.

The question that comes to mind is this, did he know of Valen’s human origins and the the house of Mir’s
genectic kinship with earth??

JMS,

Thank you for keeping B5 between the extremes of “nerd hardware heaven” and “politically-correct-
utopian-future-run-amok.” It seems to me that the show needs to address elements of both as it does, but
that neither is _real_ life. Your characters are believable, lovable, caustic, hated…. _real_ people.

A work associate of mine continually dubs you the William Shakespear (sp?) of our time. I certainly enjoy
the humor, pathos, tension, terror, romance… (you get the idea) that you have woven into Babylon5.

Will there be a 5th season? I check Lurkers, here on aol and use automated news retrieval to hunt for an
announcement.

One more note: Let WB know that I will happily buy tapes and even more happily purchase (widescreen
😉 ) lasedisks of most if not all (finances allowing) B5 episodes. We don’t get B5 at my place (no cable, no
broadcast) so I am hacking together a C-band system to snag the feed. This is too much like work! Tell
WB to save me time and busted knuckles – please: domestic NTSC tapes/LDs .

Thanks for being Joe!

Thank you very much for B5 I’ve enjoyed all the epsiodes so much! But I’m such a softy I don’t like
unhappy endings. Normally I read the end of the story to find out how it finishes first. The hard part is that
I got hooked on the show and I didn’t didn’t know diddly.

As I watch and read on the forum, I’ve heard many people talk about possible death of characters. I would
be crushed if you killed off Sheridan by showing us his demise. I would not want to watch the Crusaders
and it would really leave a bitter taste.

Please, I know you have ideas about how to show things, but I do hope you wont do this! This is a story. I
get plenty of death in real life. I go to stories to escape.

thank you.

ditto
but JMS is a very sophisticated writer and said he would be fair to his audience… IMHO killing off
Sheridan isn’t fair, so he won’t do it.

JMS has said<I think>that the events shown in WWE will now happen. So Sheridan has at least 17 years to
live as does Delenn and Vir. G’Kar and Londo have EXACTLY 17 years…All the other characters are on
their own….

The show to date has been great. I hope that you won’t kill off any more characters, but I don’t have a say in
that. The show will be great any way it goes.
I do have two questions to ask. How is the fifth season coming along or will it be canceled at the end of the
fourth. I hope for a fifth, but understand if there isn’t. Second, what happened to Lorien ship? at the end of
“into the fire” Lorien left as a white glowing sphere. In “the summoning” He came to B5 in a ship. What
has happened to that ship. Did it fly off after Lorien or does it now belong to Sheridan.
I’ll keep watching B5 for it is the #1 show in my book.

Given the impending end of Babylon 5 what plans do you have for any new television series. I’ve heard the
rumors, can you confirm or refute the idea that you have a new series in mind. If so what details can you
give the rest of us? How open are you to the idea of a new series as well as the inevitable deluge of
ideas/suggestions you would recieve if you were to admit to such an enterprise?

Thank You

1. This board is being archived. JMS is now taking questions in Ask JMS#14
2. There are plans/negotiations for the new series “The Babylon Project: Crusade” underway right now.
Read all about it in http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/lurker.html
3. There are also 2 B5 movies in planning stages and TNT will rebroadcast the entire series starting in Jan
98. The entire series consists of either 4 or 5 seasons. No word yet on season 5.

Bill (Lennier) Mumy has just released a solo CD of all original songs on the Infinite Visions Label, the
company that put out Brent Spiner’s CD. It includes a photo of Lennier with guitar, and the haunting song,
“The Ballad of Wiliam Robinson”. (Not a novelty tune!) A must for all Babylon 5- Lost in Space fans. To
order call 1-800-755-8735. You won’t be sorry.

Dear JMS,
I have a book of yours about scriptwriting which you wrote some time ago. Only recently have I become
unemployed from a 15-year job in a printing company, so I actually have time to put my ideas to paper. I
know that everyone thinks they can write a script, but I also know that it takes work, endurance and
perseverance. If you have any words of encouragement, I would appreciate them. Love Babylon 5.
Sincerely,
Mark Adams

Dear JMS,
Just wanted to say thanks for the great advice (practical and spiritual)
in your updated Scriptwriting book. I know it must have been hard to find the
time, but it was worth it as far as I’m concerned.
