A truly nice sentiment, Ranger2442, but unlikely. That would take a massive effort of organization on the
fans, and it’s sadly unlikely we could even raise enough money for one episode. That kind of money comes,
I think, from organizations like sponsers and investors and the networks themselves.

Like everyone else, the waiting game is killing me…..

Lets not panic folks. Not only is Babylon 5 a great show, it is also an improvement over JMS’s last project,
Captain Power. Whatever the outcome of B5’s fifth season, I have confidence that JMS is not going away
anytime soon and that whatever his next project is it will be worth watching.

For those of you who’ve read my previous posting of the AP story about Scott Adams appearing on B5, I
think it answers the question of whether or not Scott Adams really likes the show.

To paraphrase the often quoted Sally Field line… “He Likes It. He Really, Really Likes It.”

I have a few questions, JMS. First, I heard a rumor that you were the story editor for the cartoon “The Real
Ghostbusters.” Is this true? I loved the series and wish I had them on tape. Do you know if they are
available?
How do you manage to keep the entire storyline in your head. Do you outline?

Thanks

posted for Brain Walz:
ATTENTION!

After several weeks of fighting that is best left to the reader’s
imagination, I have gotten my ISP to create a Church Of Joe mailing list
for me. After spending the past day or two getting it set up, I am now
ready to announce it to the world. (Or, rather, you fine people at first
to get the ball rolling and then the world in a few weeks…)

Now, you notice that it is called the Church Of Joe mailing list, but is
it just for that? No, it is for any and all sub-churches too. (Which at
this time is just the Shrine Of Garibaldi.) So, this is a place for those
who worship Joe and the G-mon too.

I have always wanted this to happen, but recent events have made me move
up my schedule. With all the potential problems that the Line Tales on AOL
might cause, we needed a place to take them, or risk losing them. So, I
created this mailing list.

For those of you who don’t know what a mailing list is, I will explain.
And for those who do, skip this section…

A mailing list is just like a message area on AOL except that it is
carried out in e-mail. You write messages and send them to the list,
and anyone who is subscribed gets a copy. When you reply to messages,
unless you change the reply-to address, everyone in the group gets a
copy. It will show up in your mailbox just like regular e-mail, except
that in the

Subj:ect line you will see [COJ-List] to show you that it is
a message from/to the list.

Now the great thing about this is that, unlike the AOL message areas,
you can’t just stumble in by accident. Have have to join. Therefore Joe
can’t accidentally see something that might be considered a story idea, he
would have to deliberately come looking for it. (And we know he wouldn’t
do that.) So, the line tales can continue.

I hope to see a lot of you join. Here is how you do it… Send email to

majordomo@pacifier.com

with the following text in the body of the message…

subscribe coj-list

that is all there is to it. Don’t worry about the

Subj:ect line, it gets
ignored. All that is important is the body text.

Hello to JMS. I’ve never been on one of these message boards before, not quite sure how it works, but
here’goes.

There was a little story I wanted to tell you once when I saw you at Creation Con last year. But I didn’t
have $$$ to spend on admission, so was near the end of the line. You guys were tired, I know. And I didn’t
want to take up your time by talking your ear off, that late in the evening, so I passed you (actually, your
lady-Friday) a note with the story written out. (We didn’t have a computer yet, at that time.) Rather than re-
writing the whole thing here, I was just wondering if you ever got it?

I spoke about a superhero role-playing game and some characters named Lady Vanishes and American
Anthem. I mentioned Art and Lydia at Dangerous Visions.

It was just a detailed account of the reasons why your Babylon 5 stories mean so much to me, personally.

That’s all.

Well, at least yesterday and today he’s here in Orlando appearing at Marcon. I was able to go to his
presentation yesterday. No word on Season 5 yet, unfortunately. He showed a reel of scenes from
upcoming shows, three blooper tapes and had audience participation in dramatizing a script he wrote in
revenge for a trick that Andreas Katsulis and Peter Jurasik played on him at another Con. It was totally
hilarious and the ‘actors’ from the audience were quite good.

This is a fairly small, mostly comics convention. He spent about 2 hours on the reels and questions, then
was signing autographs when I had to leave. It looked like about 2/3 of the presentation audience was in
line for autographs. Today he’s supposed to be in a panel discussion with Peter David but I won’t be able to
make it.

So that’s where he is physically at least for the moment.

Dear Joe,
I know you’ve said over and over you don’t want to do a lot of B5 merchandise, and you don’t want the “tail
wagging the dog”…but….Would you please give us poor fans something decent to purchase!!???!!!

I was at a convention this weekend in Baltimore. There were the usual B5 T-shirts and caps, a few comic
books and paperbacks, and a few sets of the micro machines. Okay, those are fine, and no fan has ever had
a problem with buying a T-shirt.
However, there were a few other things that were really questionable. First off, pins, patches, and videos.
Are these licensed? If not, why aren’t they? I, for one, would love to have a set of B5 pins and patches, not
to mention the series and the blooper reels on video. A few of the vendors had this merchandise in “limited
quantities.”
Also, I saw key chains, stamp pads, and “Bubble Buddies.” Is this stuff licensed? If so, why? These items
appeared to be nothing more than a micro machine tacked onto a bubble blower, a key ring, or a stamp.
C’mon, Joe, we want good stuff! Bubble Buddies? Give me a break!
Unless my memory fails me, the B5 demographic is mainly adult. We have disposable income. We want
NICE Babylon 5 merchandise. (We want nice LEGAL B5 merchandise!)

Is there any hope for those of us with full wallets and empty collector cases?

A quick Hi to all those involved in Babylon 5 and JMS in particular for producing probably the finest TV
Sci -Fi show there has ever been. It is nice to be able to watch something INTELLIGENT in SF, rather then
the constant repetition of Star Trek, or even over here in the UK the sadly defunct Dr Who, with its wobbly
scenery. Please carry on for the forseeable future.
Talking of which, when are we likely to see Season 4 here in the UK ? The SF magazines and listings
guides remain ominously silent as to when it will be on next.
Will there be a Season 5 ? No-one here seems aware of that either.
I read with interest one or two comments on the merchandising of B5. I’d agree that it’s unecessary to go
over the top as another SF franchise has done… but I’d also agree that there needs to be better quality.
Thank God that Seasons 1 & 2 are available here on video, please hurry up and release season 3 too. It’s
also nice to hear there will be a role playing game – does anyone have any idea of a release date in the UK ?
There is a company in London which produces B5 uniforms – damn well too, I’m waiting for them to start
on a Vorlon encounter suit… some make- up kits for Narns, Minbari and Centauri have been requested by
friends of mine too.
It’s nice to hear that there seems to be as much excitement about the series (finally!) in the US – I think
certainly the TV companies underestimate the strength of feeling about B5 over here.
Keep up the good work ladies and gentlemen !

OK JMS, you must know something by now. Acording to the spoiler junkie pages, you have pretty much
written out the rest of the season. I have heard that J & D will get married by the end of the season, as well
as much of the remaining season will dwell into Garibaldi going to Mars, a war with Earth, and a major cast
member or two being killed off. By reading this info amongst the many websites, it appears you must know
which way the series is going, to end at season 4 or continuing onto season 5. Are they holding out on you
by just not telling you yet and you decided to write the show as if it were still 5 seasons, or have you written
the show to end with this season? Originnaly we had heard this decision was to be announced at the end of
Feb, it is now nearly April, somebody is not playing a fair game with us. I’m not blaming you for anything,

JMS took an episode to the DVD people and let them make a promo DVD out of it. Warner Home video
saw that and said “wait what are you doing with our show, it’s ours.” The swiftly replied ” You aren’t doing
anything with it, it’s the best show on TV it’s great for us.” WB Home Video then started to contemplate it
and talks have begun for home video release. And JMS says that with the fulfillment of time they will all
reach DVD.

What fantasy world are you living on? LD’s are simply more numerous, not better, than DVD. While I agree
I’d be a bit miffed to have to buy a brand new DVD system in order to watch B5, I’d probably buy the DVD
system anyway(just like when I finally bought a VHS), and I’d be *more* miffed that my glorius B5 is on
outdated technology. Go for DVD.

Have you seen DVD? You live in a fantasy world. DVD has compression problems. LD is uncompressed.
Get the facts. I’ve seen DVD. Yeah it has more lines of resolution than LD on a freez e frame, but with a
moving picture with lots of movement it’s a cop out. Remember MPEG1, well DVD is better but has the
same problems. It won’t catch on for movies I’ll put money on it. Heard about W/S ratios on DVD? For
Goldeneye which should be 2.35:1 it’s going to be 1.77:1, basically full screen. Read my postings on the
video board. Go on buy DVD, regret it within two years when the system has flopped. Why is DVD not
being aimed at the LD market? It’s aimed at VHS, LD’s come out first, before DVD’s and VHS. Why should
I replace LD with an inferior system. I don’t live in a fantasy world. DVD worries me because things like B5
may come out on it and not the better LD’s. Visit some web sites, check out DVD. Get the facts. I have.

Here we go again, the DVD vs. LD arguement. One reason that B5 might work better on DVD is that
DVD’s can hold letterboxed and pan and scan versions of the episodes, while I find pan and scan offensive
many people feel the same way about letterbox. On VHS or LD warner video would have to release pan
and scan and letterbox versions of the episodes and they have showed such resistance to releasing them at
all that for them to see that they could make more money releasing them in pan and scan and letterbox that
they would have to have a revelation, or open their eyes.

Laserdisc owners would never consider buying a p/s version. One reason that B5 might work better on LD

Why not a deep scan of Garibaldi rather than all this other stuff?

Come on. S is willing to murder an ambassador (why didn’t they revoke his status in the show first), do just
about everything else, why not ask Lyta to do a deep telepathic scan on his best friend who has just
dissappeared attached to a Shadow vessel?

For that matter, why not ask Lyta to help heal up whatever damage was done by psicorp, the shadows, etc.?

This was posted recently on Usenet. Joe answered a question regarding his welfare

============================================================
Of the choices given….

1. Too busy. Will get back when I’m not utterly snowed under.
2. Not feeling very well at the moment.
3. Haven’t anything of interest to say right now. Thought I’d wait
until I had some news.
4. The questions being raised at the moment have already been
answered or aren’t addressed to me.
5. Couldn’t get my computer to post to the new address
(b5mod@deepthot.cary.nc.us.).
6. Other (please specify if it’s not top secret).

It’s 1, 3, and 4, with a little of 6 going on. I’m just completely up
to my ass in alligators with production right now. As usual, WB wants
to hold 4 episodes for October, but that means because they held back
there’s going to be a big crunch of new shows in May sweeps. Nine eps
in a row. So we’re busting our butts to get stuff ready.

They’ll be airing 310 through 318 between April 18th and June 13th.
Which will at least give us a big boost and ramp things up.

“You’re getting us worried, Great Maker. Are you OK? ( }:-( )”

Fine. Pooped. But fine.
jms
========================================================

Would it make sense to hold back episodes until October, if there wasn’t going to be a season 5? I think this
could be good news, for us at least, for the prospects of getting season 5.

Just a note of thanks. I have been an avid viewer of B5 since the pilot, & find that I’m very spoiled & have
become very picky when watching SF shows, these days.

Being interested in SF, I did the Star Wars thing growing up & followed Trek. Upon watching either a Deep
Space 9 or Voyager (don’t remember which) episode recently, I found that my patience & attention span for
that show was just about nil. The characters are cardboard, w/no depth. They rely on technobabble to solve
every problem. The plots/storylines are hokey, & there’s nothing to really keep the audience involved or
having them invest their emotions to give a darn about them.

In other words- B5 is the ONLY show I can depend on to drag me through the ringer of emotions –
cheering, laughing, crying, yelling @ certain characters, picking up on subtleties, etc. Thank you again for
creating the creme de la creme of SF (or any genre for that matter) TV. This show treats the viewer
w/respect & intelligence, & isn’t afraid to have any of the characters go through tranformations or change.
They manage to touch us in the most human ways, & there’s something we all can identify with.

Thank you again for the wonderful roller coaster ride! Thankfully, SF tv will never be the same. Thank you
for spoiling us so wonderfully w/your rich tapestry of storytelling!

Also, thank you for assembling a magnificent cast & crew to bring life to this rich tapestry! They are ALL
incredible!

That pretty much says it all for about 99% of the fans. It is a bit sad when you get to the end of a really
good book and close the cover. You had a great time getting into the characters and lived with them for a
time..then it’s over. But, then you discover that the author isn’t done….there might be more. And you wait
anxiously for the next installment in the wonderful world he has created.

Looking forward to seeing what comes next…waiting patiently and savoring the reruns.

Of course since they apparantly don’t realize this folder has existed for a couple of weeks, I suppose we
could talk about them real bad. They’d never be the wiser. At least not until the JMS #15 folder shows up
and they start reading and replying to this one.

Just posting an annoyance. I know this isn’t probably the place for it. But hey, where else would I post it?
Oh yeh, JMS #13 would be perfect. 😀

Deb,

My name is Roc’o Blanco, and I run the Command And Control Web Site, which was formally known as,
“C&C, A Claudia Christian Fan Club”. I’m not gonna say anything bad about her, but I will straighten out
the facts here. She did know about the club, she does know about the club, she does know about the web
site, and she did not mention it at all during her online chat.

She said, point blank, that she “does not have any time for a fan club.”

Those are the facts, read into it what you will.

In “Z’ha’Dum,” Morden says that the Vorlons allow humans to “see what they want you to see.” I recall
from “Fall of Night” that all there saw angels <or similar creatures> except for Londo.

1) What did Londo actually see?
2) Do the Vorlons look like they did when Kosh 1 and Kosh 2 fought? Vaporous, squid-like beings?

Thumping the book o’ G’qon again Lady T.?<grin> Seriously the complaints I’ve heard here sound almost as
bad as when Nimoy put out his book “I Am Not Spock.”
Claudia Christian is an actress. This is her job, she works 12 to 13 hours a day, and she enjoys it. I have had
friends who have met her during various cons , and she (from all reports) is very nice and has a great
(though slightly twisted) sense of humor.
Fan clubs don’t need to have contact or approval of the person…Doing this stuff unsactioned works just as
well. Heck I don’t ever expect Claudia, Jason, or Joe to show up at my website…if they do, cool. if not that’s
cool too because I didn’t develope Delusions of Grandeur for them. I did it for all those people who like the
idea of a relationship between Marcus and Susan. Fan clubs are for the fans. Fan clubs are places where
people of like minds go and talk about their interests. Let it rest already.

I really didn’t see a romantic interest their. It was more like seeing a teacher look at their student prodigy,
knowing that he would become far greater than she was. She was definitely fascinated by him. None of this
means she knew he was Valenn. When he was captured, the triluminari glowed, as it did to Delenn. JMS
said it detected Valenn’s DNA. The Minbari may have interpreted this as it finding Valenn’s soul since the
triluminaries might still be a mystery to them. Add to this the prophecies about the times ahead,(whatever
they were), and come of the council may have believed that Sinclair would become a great leader in the next
war. If they knew he was Valenn, they’d have never authorized Delenn to kill him if neccessary. Neither
would the military have disented so much at him leading the rangers.

The only thing that was stated about hat during the ep, was Sheridan speculated that Lyta could have sent a

didn’t she do it before?!? 2) Why didn’t the Dark Servants deactivate it? 3) Why didn’t she warn Sheridan

I hate to read too much into anything but I was thinking about Warners lack of revelation on season 5.
Originally we were supposed to know yea or nay by the end of February sweeps. It was my feeling that
chances were not good, but that it was possible season 5 might come to pass. Here we are in April with no
word and I am wondering if no word is good word due to the fact that Warners is seriously considering
overcoming the legal obsticales to S5. 1) Is there any accuracy to this? 2) How good were the February
sweeps to Warner? and 3) Will the May sweeps have any impact on S5?

Thanks

Subj:: Re:Season 5
Date: 4/4/97 9:39:21 PM
From: JOHN DANT
Posted on: America Online

There are contractual problems regarding the ownership of B5 (or broadcast rights, i’m not sure) which
became an issue when the Prime Time Entertainment Network, the company that syndicates B5, went out of
business. I’m not sure what it would take to overcome this to allow season 5, but JMS has indicated that this
is the issue that would bar season 5, not ratings or support of the show. The wildcard was that Warner was
waiting to see how strong the Febraury sweeps were as an indication whether to try to get the series
extended to its final season; the ratings were good as far as I can tell, much better than the previous year at
this time. So now we all sit andwait to find out what happens.
I could have some of this wrong; if so, someone please correct me.

I just realized that there’s one shot in the opening titles of a Shadow ship firing on a dome-type colony….So
far I haven’t seen that scene anywhere.
Did I miss something? Or is it one of those shots that never made it to the final cut? It’s a cool shot
but….really confusing….

Thanks, kind of stupid to say it but..don’t work too hard.
(BTW..I’m one of the few who don’t want to know about Season 5…what happens is what happens…it’s all
good no matter how long it lasts.)

I was reading in the Lurker’s Guide that JMS is going to re-edit the pilot movie, re-do some of the special
effects, and even use new music by Christopher Franke.

Why? Why? Why? Just air the pilot in its original form, flaws and all. I LIKED the original music…I don’t
want it replaced.

Why is it that everyone feels the need to make all these retro-changes to everything? The Star Wars special
editions are filled with extraneous CGI crap, the episodes of Seinfeld that originally had John Randolph as
George’s dad now have Jerry Stiller in the syndicated versions…this madness must stop! I worry that
someday somebody’s going to do a special edition of The Wizard of Oz with long swooping CG shots of the
Emerald City, extra CG monkeys, etc. etc.

I do have two questions to ask. How is the fifth season coming along or will it be canceled at the end of the

Come on. S is willing to murder an ambassador (why didn’t they revoke his status in the show first), do just
about everything else, why not ask Lyta to do a deep telepathic scan on his best friend who has just

Dear Great Maker JMS,

Please PLEASE, is there a cutoff date when WB (or whoever decides B5’s fate) has to inform cast and crew
– and FANS – whether or not Babylon 5 will be back next year?

I know you want to finish up the stories you want to tell and need to know whether you have 9 episodes to
do it or 9 plus an entire season. How long before their delay seriously impacts your scripts?

I’ve been reading a LOT about Babylon 5 in the press – all of it good, btw – but nothing on whether or not
it’s coming back next season. I don’t know if this is good or bad.

Whatever happens, I do want to thank you for the brilliance you have shown us on this vast wasteland called

Someone said the pilot no longer exists in that form. There may not be an original negative in existence but
there is certainly an almost legal copy of “The Gathering” in circulation at cons only. I say almost legal
because it is supposedly an NCSC copy from a PAL original picked up in Europe and yes, I was so
desperate to actually see the pilot that I purchased it and watched it. Will tape it again when TNT begins to
air the series in 1988 because it is not very easy to watch (too many scan lines) along with the rest of the
first season which I missed (kick myself again very hard for not catching on to Bab 5 earlier). Can we be
assured that the series will air in its entirety (at least in its first run) or will it be chopped up for those oh-so-
important endless commercials? Probably shouldn’t have given in to temptation but was still disappointed
that I couldn’t drag home tapes from England that I could play here or I would have been proud owner of
entire first season on Professional Videotapes (so when will TNT license/allow professional tapes to be
sold?) Why are you turning down potential goldmine – particularly for first season and second season tapes
– couldn’t hurt anybody especially after TNT has rerun those seasons and would make so many fans so very
happy?! – Please!!!

Hope you manage to have a fifth season – fourth season is great so far – just have to complain about the
number of reruns in between good episodes, and it looks like we’ll still have to wait until the Fall for the
last four episodes of the Fourth Season. I know – it sounds like you get nothing but complaints. I really
love the show and want it to continue forever. Will settle for whatever I can get so long as you don’t do a
“Forever Knight” ending.

Just because your local station is not picking up the 5th season does not mean there is not going to be one.

Thank you for being the voice of reason. Apparently we’ve gained a lot of new readers of this section or else
some people have a relatively short memory. Let’s be a little more patient everyone.

If you really want to help the show, contact your local station and encourage them to ask for another season.
I just wrote to mine giving suggestions of the types of sponsors they might want to solicit for the show.
Some of the recommendations I gave were to have them go to the local bookstores/comic shops, record
stores, movie theatres and other places that may not normally sponsor a show but would attract the general
B5 type of audience.

I guess if I really loved the show and had more time on my hands I would even go to those places myself
and tell them I’d like to see their ads on the show. My main point is that we can use the next two months
productively to not only do our best to get B5 renewed, but also in a better time slot. I know that I’m getting
tired of recording it on Sunday mornings at 3 am or Sunday nights at 11 pm.

Paul,
WB may own the show but PTEN had the broadcast rights for the 1st run episodes. Even though PTEN

I’m not B5O but I can add to this. PTEN can’t desolve until all their shows go off the air and the barkers get

<<<<Okay…next question…so why doesn’t WB buy the rights from PTEN?>>>>

I don’t think WB can buy the rights from them, the contract may forbid that, I think, not sure. However JMS
did state that one main problem is that the original contract specifies that B5 cannot air on syndacation in
first run; why is that a problem , you may ask? apparently the Tv market is very crowded and there is much
competition for spots in the network lineups. Now, since B5 can only appear in first-run on regular Tv , this
means that TNT & other cable networks are out of the picture, in other words, the original contract forbids
them from airing B5 first ( they can do re-runs of it, witness the TNT agreeement) ; this leaves B5 in a
limbo where they have to work hard to find a spot for themselves at a different time on every market.
Apparently, since B5 is shown in a wide variety of local stations across US at different days & times, those
stations now airing B5 may have agreements to air new shows, or may prefer a new show in place of the
final season of an older showin the hope of attracting more wievers, etc….anyway TV space is very limited
right now…that is basically the problem…
Well, this is my understanding of the situation, anyone welcome to make corrections or to add things…;-)

This may be a far out posting from someone with a vivid imagination..but here goes.

I know that B5 was influenced by a lot of literature and old movies, “Forbidden Planet” springs to mind
immediately. I sat down the other day and watched my LD of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Just after the
scene where Gort has brought Klaatu back to life, we hear Michael Rennie describing the process as having
varied success depending on the

Subj:ect and circumstances, his life expectancy may be shortened but who knows? This reminds me very
much of the Lorien/Sheriden scene at the beginning of season 4. Also The fact that Gort was from a race of
super robots, designed to look after the various races and keep them in peace throughout the galaxy,
reminded me very strongly of the caretaker role provided by the Shadows and Vorlons. Probably no
conection but do these scenes have any influence on B5?

It was a great movie though, hardly dated by the passing years, hopefully B5 will survive the test of time
also.

Hi there Joe. I just finished Harlan’s “City on the Edge of Forever” book, and was just wondering if you

wondering if the “Demon with a Glass Hand”-based B5 ep never gets made if Harlan would be resistant to
writing it as a novel or novela? Thanks.

(BTW, after you’re done with the 30-hour-a-day, 9-days-a-week work schedual you’ve got yourself on, any

I got some good news on the B5 front in Rochester.

I called the cable company to ask a few questions about R26, Rochester’s WB affiliate. The young man I
was talking to asked about the program I was concerned about and I told him it was Babylon 5. He
immediately went into “oh, we get SO many calls about that show, it looks to be the most popular show on
the air”. The cable company in Rochester and the WB affilliate (only available from cable) gets a HUGE
number of calls in favor of Babylon 5, moreso than Xena and Hercules. I told him we were sweating out it’s
renewal for next season and he said “oh, that should be NO problem”.

I hope he’s right, he said a number of them at the cable company were big fans of the show too.

I just thought I’d share that with people and to let them know that they should by all means call their local
stations and cable companies and pet them and let them know how happy you are that they are carrying
Babylon 5. Be pleasent and cheerful and let them know how much you love the show and how happy you
are that they are carrying it. They remember this sort of thing.

JMS, thank you for creating a show we can be passionate about. Babylon 5 is a rare piece of work and we’ll
always be thankful to you for putting it together, no matter what happens with season 5.

Question: Umm….. is English the new standard language for different species communications?
I can understand why on the station different races might speak english, but in “…And the Rock Cried Out,
No Hiding Place…” While on Narn, the Narns, and Centauri spoke english…. Are the Narns and Centauri
actually speaking their own languages (which happen to sound exactly like english), or is it a Hunt For Red

they are speaking their languages?

Thanks for the info about B5 in Rochester. It has been difficult at times to track the show over the last 4
years. It’s gone through a number of time and channel changes here. When the show moved to WB26, the
channel wasn’t even listed in the program directory! For over a year, if you weren’t already watching, you
would have no idea the program even existed in Rochester. It was only recently that WB26 started to list
thier programing! Even still, it’s one of the most popular shows here!

I found it extremely funny for two reasons (though that people were injured was not very funny). Firstly
because sometimes the low flying private planes around the island come so close my whole house starts
rattling.:) The second thing was that you mentioned the driver could testify to what happened. I was on the

I think Lurker’s had a quote from JMS about this. He said they are speaking different languages, it’s just a
pain to subtitle everything, not to mention annoying for the viewer. Can you imagine all those great scenes
with Cartagia in subtitles? It’s better this way.

If they did have universal translators, then Ivanova wouldn’t need a translator to run the White Star. They
only kind of translators I’ve seen are on Kosh and that one insectoid race.

When B5 is re-run on TNT, will it air in letterbox format? Or will that be saved for potential future video

Also – will the episodes run in their entirety as we have seen them thus far? Or will they be edited a bit to

On sale in bookstores in the UK are videotapes of B5. Don’t get all excited and try to bring them home

JMS has addressed this question in the past. Basically, when a bunch of Narns are together, they are
probably all speaking Narn; when a bunch of Minbari are together, they are probably all speaking Minbari.
The TV SHOW presents it to us in English for simplicity and better drama. On the other hand, when
representatives of different races are shown together, they have to speak in some mutually comprehensible
language. There is no magical “universal translator” anywhere in the station — people actually have to learn
each others’ languages and try to speak them. Since we, the viewers, are for the most part speakers of
English, the 2260 version of “earth common speech” is presented as English. You may have noticed that
every once in a while, somebody among the aliens makes a mistake with the humans’ language. Londo once
tried to quote a phrase he had heard, but couldn’t recall the name of an earth water fowl. When the word
“cat” was suggested, he finished the cliche as “nibbled to death by cats” — and felt no inclination to question
the choice of words at the time!

JVibber- remember the first scene in the Captain’s cabin in The Hunt for Red October? THe movie used
Russian subtitles until the Political Officer began reading from a book; as the camera panned back, the
subtitles were dropped and the PO began speaking English. Considering the circumstances, it would hardly
be likely that the Protector of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union would be speaking English- he
began speaking English because at that point it had already been established that everyone was Russian and
so the subtitles were now a distraction. I’ve seen Das Boot both subtitled and dubbed, and in that case
dubbed was nicer. The German characterss didn’t start speaking English- but the actors did. Your
explanation was right on.

Star Trek fans may have a reason to believe that everyone in the universe speaks English- but B5 fans don’t.

A question and/or a request to JMS:
I have been filling the void during re-run by buying/reading the B5 novels. Books 1 to 6 were like Babylon
5 as if were done by Paramount (plots and characterizations that just didn’t ring true to the characters you’ve
created on the show). I guess you have raised the standard for good sci-fi (make that good television
period). But back to the novels. Number 7 was excellent (HEAVEN). The author seemed to really grasp the
character of Sheridan and the story filled in a lot of details which seemed very consistent with the show.
BUT Book 8 was a really big big let down (HELL). I just could not believe the conversations between
Londo and G’Kar ever happened (on the show G’Kar barely spoke with Londo – each word very measured –
but in #8 is was a regular Chatty Cathy). I finally gave up half way into the book and tossed it aside. I hope
that Book 9 will be at #7’s level. I know you’ve got you hands filled with the show but based on your
comments about merchandising, wouldn’t be it better to cut back on the novels and make them special (#7
was good enough to buy as a hardback) rather than letting someone churn out cr*p that doesn’t contribute
anything to the show?

Ran across this reference to B5 by Andy Ihnatko in the April 97 MacUser magazine, and thought it might
be of interest to everyone:

“I opened this column with a Star Trek reference. I’ll end it with a comparison to another SF show, Babylon
5. It’s so much more satisfying than Star Trek in every way. In Trek, there are little events that never really
add up to much and never change any of the fundamentals of the show. If someone gets shot or gets taken
over by a malevolent alien entity, or if the entire crew is turned into marmosets, not to worry: Things will be
fine and forgotten by the start of next week’s episode, which is why it’s impossible to tell a second-season
episode from a seventh-season one. Babylon 5’s creator, J. Michael Straczynski, has a different attitude.
We, the show’s viewers, are allowed our moments of happiness and security, but just when we’ve become
happy watching JMS pull rabbits out of hats, he pulls out a snapping, hissing crocodile and forces us to
cuddle it. Just when the unstoppable, ungodly, and hitherto unseen menace our heroes have been preparing
to battle for three seasons appears poised to strike its final blow against the galaxy, it invites Babylon 5’s
commander over for tea to explain its side of the story, and it begins to appear that B5’s unstoppable, godly,
and hard-won ancient ally isn’t fighting on the side of Good so much as Self-Interest. It’s called Change.
Change sucks, but as your dad told you just after declaring that you were old enough to get a job during
summer vacation, Change leads to Growth.”

I work for a tv station that does carry B5. Today, I asked the programming director if it was going to be
picked up next season or not. She told me that she was going to renew it, but she had been told by her
contact person that it would not be brought back for another season. She said that the word was not official,
but everyone knows that it will not be back. I had said something about the silence from JMS on this and
she said that his contract probably prohibits him from saying anything until the word is out officially.

This is just what I was told by her. I figured that I would pass along the info.

JMS,

Just finished watching a Millenium episode where they killed off a major character for no apparent reason.
My roomate, a big X-File fan whom I have recently turned into a B5 fan, was quite distressed at this second
Chris Carter death in a few weeks. She said to me,”JMS must be a much more evolved human being. He
would never just kill someone off without a reason. You might not know what it was at the time, but he’d
have a reason.”

Ain’t that the truth. Thanks, JMS. Keep up the great work.

Why the need to bash ST? Can’t we enjoy B5 without putting down other shows? Maybe even – GASP –

In point of fact, it has been pointed out in various ST episodes that they DO use “univeral translators”,

This universal translator debate reeks of cheap shots. At least Trek attempts to provide a scientific
explanation for such a device and its effects. This is never acknowledged by rabid Fivers.

Now let me throw out a similar cheap shot against *B5*, and see if the more rabid Fivers like it: Everyone
raise your hand if you thought Londo’s character wasn’t somewhat cartoonish in the first episode of *B5*.
In my opinion, Londo’s character — the alcohol-swilling Russian archetype — was deliberately cartoonish
and stereotypical — deliberately, but cartoonish and stereotypical nevertheless. Yet I wouldn’t dwell on
such a defect, because of the overall merits of *B5*.

BTW, has anyone attempted to explain the technical details of the Babylon 5 the way the Trek production
staff has? Are there quasi-probable, quasi-scientific explanations for jumpgates in the manner of *B5*?
Perhaps, but they’re not widely available. Another shortcoming of *B5*, it would seem, since it is supposed
to be SCIENCE fiction — but probably a cheap shot since *B5*, again, is meritorious in other ways.

My point is that we can go and attack one or the other show as much as we want. It’s really self-destructive,
though, to do so with the attitude that nothing is off limits in such an attack. To say that *B5* is garbage, or
Trek is garbage, is akin to the attitude that so many nonfans of science fiction have: Science fiction is
juvenile trash for people who don’t have a life. Now *that* would be offensive to either a Trekker or a
Fiver. If so, can we not learn from this and try to promote one’s favored show without trashing the
perceived opposition?

Jumpgates are a “doorway” into another dimension, call it hyperspace if you want, that allows you to take a
short cut between points. This concept has been a sf staple since the 40’s and is just as plausible, if not more
so, as ignoring the Theory of Relativity and having Scotty step on the gas in order to go 2,4,6, or 8 times the
speed of light. Also trek ignores the time dilation effect.

Isn’t it possible that the changes in the universe that have gone on in *B5* might very well have caused
permanent psychological changes in one or more major characters? If so, who would that character be (not
counting people who are already nutjobs to begin with)? Sheridan? Garibaldi? Lyta? Delenn?

Think about it: Lorien has departed; the universe has lost its two major opposing forces; time has turned
upon itself; entire planets have been wiped out; Earth is being totalitarianized; there is no-one out there but
ourselves….

A velvet shroud of newfound tyranny descends upon our corner of the universe, embracing, suffocating,
constraining, tightening, deadening, crushing…. The mind is left free to roam within itself. When the
Shadows have left, the light does not yet illuminate all. It is the light that burns, the present that sears, the
future that opens up, eternal, unavailing, ever patient, and without promise…. Cultural meltdown? Have we
seen the beginnings of it? Are we yet in it?

That’s because they have better things to do than create techno-nonsense to make you part with your money.
They’re doing little, unimportant things like creating the best TV series ever aired!

As for your little ‘glitch’ about Londo, having read most of JMS comments about the Ep and writing in
general, I think he *wanted* Londo to be stereotyped. And we did stereotype him. I saw Londo as some
kind of comedy relief. I thought of him that way right up until he told Vir “Go get Mr. Morden”.

Actually, in Trek space is warped so that time dialation isn’t a factor. Thus, “warp” speed.

At Barnes and Noble the other day (just browing), I saw book by you about writing for Television and
Movies. Havne’t bought it yet (writing for TV is not for me, but, I do enjoying watching TV when it is as
good as B5), but it sure was interesting to browse through at the store. I suggest everyone who has ever
asked you about writing for TV and movies check it out. I was impressed with the no nonsense style and
truth the book had.

BTW: Everyone in the War Room was right on target about the total lack of even decent Science Fiction in
film today. I can only dream that such classics as I Robot and A Canticle for Leibowicz (sp) (my all time
favorite novel) would ever be made into movies. I noticed, however, that none of panelists suggested any
current Science Fiction titles that would make good movies, was this a subconsious oversight, or a consious
comment on the lack of good Science Fiction reading material these days? It seems to me that that section
of the bookstore is now all but dominated by Star Trek and Star Wars. Is this what we have reduced
ourselves too? I enjoyed Star Wars and Star Trek as much as the next person. But, as I have grown older, I
find myself yearning for so much more. Lets face it, how many lost Jedi Knights and Empire Admirals can
their be? I guess that is why B5 is so popular, the characters grow, change, adjust, they don’t just move
along from show to show. I think that is why many fans are clamoring for you to continue to write, because
we have found someone who understands that in a story, CHARACTERS are first. (I have to say here,
Harlen too.) I watch B% because the characters are interesting, changable, and not predictable. One good
guy today, may be your enemy tomorrow, and visa-versa. I hope for more, only because it about the only
decent thing aring today.

If I may attempt an answer. I believe that was the symbol of the Grey Council. Somehow, Morden’s
presence must have done something to bring that to the fore. Once before we saw a Minbari (male) w/the
same marking on his forehead. In order for them to be able to walk among the ‘masses’ they must have a
way of making that marking not visible.

Just a possible reasoning. Only JMS knows exactly.

JMS,

Back when Franklin had his “stim” addiction, JS exhibited a tendency to “walk away” from
unpleasant/uncomfortable situations. During Garibaldi’s recent troubles, JS showed that same trait–i.e., he
waited until he could no longer ignore the situation before finally confronting Garibaldi.

Is this a correct assessment? Is Sheridan having to deal with this basic personality flaw?

have been too busy to take care “The Spider” (as Sheridan declared at the end of the episode: “There is a

The whole issue with Bureau 13, the Psi Corps experiments with alien technology and “cyberzombies” and

I dunno. I didn’t think that Sheridan’s eruption of anger at Garibaldi was out of character at all. Think of
the strain he has been under. He depends on his close circle of officers/friends to be not only support, but a
reality touchstone. At the same time, he has literally devoted his life to the cause of fighting the Shadow
War and rebuilding afterwards. To have one of these “reality touchstones” turn on him and call into
question the cause Sheridan has dedicated EVERYTHING to has got to hit some fundamentally raw nerves
for our beloved Captain.

What was it he said in “Line of Communication”? Something about feeling as if he had carried the station
on his back and crawled over broken glass for three years? He is tired, and he has thrown away everything
(including in a very real sense, his life) on an ideal. How could he NOT erupt when someone questioned
that?

(I sometimes feel JMS must REALLY relate to Sheridan at this point, what with writing two solid seasons
of script all on his own plus all his other B5 obligations and the overwhelming, if well-meaning,
expectations of us fans. He probably feels, like Sheridan, that he has carried the station on his back through
broken glass! And, like Sheridan, he still remains totally comitted to the cause. Whadda guy!)

And, before I

Yes, I quite agree. After watching Racing Mars, I began to wonder if JMS didn’t begin to “dislike” being
called “The Great Maker” simply because of what he’s now putting Sheridan through–i.e., being called god-

close. Now, I haven’t read any spoilers, so if you have already said that this will actually be in an episode,
don’t blame me. 😉
I think that at Z’Ha’Dum, when Garibaldi was taken, he was put on a Shadow ship, but not just any ship, it
was a Shadow-Earth ship. We know that Earth has had some secret connections to the Shadows and I think
Earth was using some Shadow ships. This would explain why we heard a human interrogating Garibaldi
when he was locked in that room. I think they implanted some sort of dormant personality into him. Then,
Clark ordered Psi Corps to send him that message that activated the personality. And wha-lah! We have
grouchy Garibaldi! 😉

As a subscriber to the Zocalo newsletter, I read with great interest in issue #107, dated 4/28/97, your
response relating to the expected responses you will get from the final episode (422/522. For a long time
now, particularly since Apotheosis, I have been very ambivalent about the final episode, made moreso by
your comments (at a convention) that the final episode is set 20 years in the future. Then I read you
response to the above question, in which you said that the entire cast and crew cried upon reading the script,
and that you ‘lost it’ several times while writing the script, particularly one scene (I can imagine!). When I
finished reading your response in the Z, tears were streaming down my face (as they are now). I wanted to
write to you then, but couldn’t. Then I reread what you said and, although I cried again, I felt I could now
write.

I’ve been watching loyally since the pilot and have come to feel I know these ‘people’ – I feel happy for them
in their triumphs, anguished for them during their trials and pain – almost as if they are close friends or
family. I await new episode anxiously, knowing that, if it were a book, I would read nonstop until I finished
it. Even though I’ve known since the beginning that this story has a definite end, it is a story I don’t want to
end, nor do I want our hero’s stories to end. Because of this, I know I (probably most others) will have
great difficulty with this final episode – I almost wish there could be an ending of sorts in 2262, and leave
the remaining 18 years or so up in the air. But I know you’ve been saying all along that the end of the story
is the end of the story; hence the final episode.

So now all I want to say is a huge THANK YOU for this wonderful, thoughtful, inspiring story. If the most
you wanted was to tell a tale worth telling, to make people cry and laugh and think about things and maybe
see the world a little differently, for me, you have succeeded totally. When this is over, I shall miss it
terribly, but you’re right, this ‘book’ will come down off the shelf to be ‘read’ and thought about again and
again.

Thank you again so much.

Dear Mr. Straczynski,
I just read your posting dated 04/24 about the stress involved with writing so many episodes for Season 4.
It would be foolish of me to expect you to continue such work; despite my personal joy
at viewing the new episodes, but I wanted to express my deepest appreciation for your effort and
achievement. Probably noone again in television history will be able to accomplish this feat. I know
that you didn’t do this completely alone; so please thank the other individuals involved for their

<<How would any of us behave if we knew the future? Just a thought…>>

The problem with seeing the future is that knowing a possible future makes you change your actions and
that future may then disappear into what might have been creating a new future. Did Sheridan fulfill his
future when he decided to go to Z’hadum or did he create a new track?

My head is still spinning around with the implications of the Sinclair/Valen/Sinclair circle. The Minbari
stopped the war because Minbari souls were being reborn in humans – yet their evidence for this was
Sinclair whose soul was only detectable as Minbari because he went back in time and became Valen. (I’m
assuming they detected an identifiable “Valen’s soul” within Sinclair when they examined him at the Battle
of the Line.)

The what ifs in B5 are numerous – I’m anxiously awaiting to see further events unfold. Although it does
appear that Londo’s vision of his death at G’Kar’s hands is probably true what happens before then is still to
be told.

As a relative newcomer to the series I have a question about the idea of human souls being born in Minbari.
It’s been stated that **1,000 years ago** human souls were being born in Minbari. How would they know
that if the Minbari did not know of the existence of humans until their disastrous first contact which occured
15 years before the start of the story?

Ditto to Alondrawk (spelling?)’s previous question re Minbari not knowing about humans. I couldn’t figure
out how Sinclair/Valen could present the Minbari with B4–a space station large enough to house 1/4
million people–without there being ALL KINDS of information scattered about regarding humans as the
builders of B4. Sorry, but this REALLY HAS BEEN BUGGING ME. Could someone with clout
(JMS???) and knowledge relieve me of my angst?

Actually, “1,000 years ago” Minbari souls began being born into Humans. The Minbari population had
been declining somewhat during that time, and since Minbari believe that when they die their souls mingle
with other Minbari souls to be reborn into the population, they were really wondering where so many souls
were going since they were not being born on Minbar. Supposedly, now that Sinclair has gone back in time
to become Valen, this trend will stop and Minbari souls will now go back to Minbar.

Aside to JMS–Did I get that right?

I think you’re taking this way out of proportion. It needs no complicated explanation, just a simple answer.
Maybe they suspected something and they took Sinclair in. And when they exposed him to the triluminary,
it glowed, since it was made for his DNA (Remember “Atonement”?). This is a very simple explanation,
and I think that if JMS doesn’t already have a pre-conceived answer, he’ll agree with me that this would be
the best explanation.

I had read that Voyager intends to use a new enemy to fight the Borg in their season finale that uses “squid-

Babylon 5. My question is, where do you draw the line between an idea that may be coincidentally similiar
to something you created, vs plagerism if it is not an exact duplication of your creation?
I am sorry if I phrased this question badly, my writing skills are rusty, but I hope you understand what I
mean. By the way, I love the show because I cannot predict what is going to happen next. I can usually
figure out who the bad guy is, or solve the mystery, but not on B5.

I think that if this happened on a less reputable show, JMS and WB might think differently of it. But this is
a multi-million dollar STAR TREK show by Paramount. They really wouldn’t plagerize, knowing it could
be traced so easily, since they’re so famous.

Momentary de-lurk:

We are so wrapped up in the B5-PsiCorp-EarthGov-Shadow-vorlon conspiracy theorizing that we have
overlooked 2 very important conclusions:

1. JMS and DS9 are in conspiracy to produce 2 versions of the exact same show. Aside from both being set
on space stations, they also feature squid-like aliens who use organic technology, civil wars, and jumpgate
technology. They have also divided up the show into 2 halves. ST shows a paternalistic, Nice, Vorlon sort
of future. B5 lurks in the Shadows, causing dissent and infighting.

2. JMS and the ST writers are either under the influence of aliens, or are aliens themselves. They are
attempting to influence us into believing that when the aliens do finally arrive, as long they act like Minbari
or Bajorans, then they are OK. Several years ago the Enquirer published a report that several Senators were
aliens. I think they are only partially right. We are being infiltrated by aliens, but they are getting at us
through the media and entertainment industry. They wouldn’t waste their time trying to go through a useless
medium such as Congress.

I don’t think the fact of how famous someone or something is, would stop them from plagerizing.
Didn’t Babylonian Productions or PTEN or somebody successfully sue Paramount for DS9 (I read that B5
was hatched 10 years before DS9). I even remember reading George Lucas also sued Paramount for using
similiar uniforms (or aliens, I forget which). If the season finale of Voyager has aliens taken right from B5,

Re: plagerism – there have been quite a few ‘similarities’ of character names/races in ST that seem to be
directly from B5.

Ie- one of Kira’s boyfriends- Shikar (or something similar) but when she says it it sounds just like -G’Kar.
Hmmm… wonder where that came from?

Then there’s an alien race called the Aanaran’s (sp?) that when said quickly sounds like the “Narns”
hmmm… another thing that makes you go, “Hmmm…” Yeah- subtle, thay ain’t. After all the suits that
Paramount (ST) has tried to follow up on re: copyrighting… it doesn’t surprise me that they are trying to
‘cash in on’ another success in science fiction. After all, JMS did pitch the idea to Paramount a few yrs
_BEFORE_ DS9 came out.

Hmmm is right. It is sad what Paramount and Co has done to the ST series. I think I will tune into
Voyager’s season finale to see their “best product” that they have to offer (you would suppose a season
finale would be one of the best shows since they want to draw more viewers for next season) and see if it
generates as much suspense, excitement, and fun as a normal episode of B5. This may very well be its last
show, since I heard Hercules and Xena have beat out ST in the ratings war and I had read Voyager makes
enough to cover the cost of making it, but not much more. You know, in retrospect, I view ST as a product
(I am guessing because it is so commercialized) but I think of B5 as a good story.

That is almost impossible. I’ve already read press releases planning Paramount’s next season about

JMS’s comments of this date on ship colors are quite interesting.

Trek has had multicolored ships since before *B5* first aired. The Romulan Bird of Prey of the Original
Series had a colorful bird painted on the underside of the ship. The Romulan Warbird of *Star Trek: The
Next Generation* was entirely green. The Ferengi have reddish-brown ships. And even the Klingon Bird
of Prey is greenish.

In fact, ships in Trek have been more colorful than those of virtually any other major television franchise
other than *Babylon 5*. (Compare with ships in *Space: 1999* or *Battlestar Galactica*, or, cinematically,
even *Star Wars*, *The Empire Strikes Back*, and *Return of the Jedi*, for example.)

On another note, I am pleased to see that JMS has appropriate regard for a competitor series (“Good for
them”). He has always shown a great deal of grace about this issue. :-)

I’ve noticed for a while now, and even more so during Rumors, Bargains & Lies that the Minbari worker
caste seems, well, strangely silent and totally unrepresented in the recent troubles. Granted that the conflict

Dear JMS:

As a historian of and writer about the Wild West (and a Texan), I’ve enjoyed your references to Wild West
icons, i.e., Texas Rangers and the Winchester Mansion. I’ve written about both (though not in WILD
WEST SHOW!, the book I gave to Rick Biggs, but a previous book), and in fact I’m now working on
THEY RODE FOR THE LONE STAR, the official illustrated history of the Texas Rangers. I’m not only
tracing the history of the Rangers, but the myth and media. Along with the Lone Ranger, characters from
LONESOME DOVE and WALKER, I’d like to include references in the media section to your Babylon 5
Rangers.

Keep up the excellent work, amigo! If you’re coming to WorldCon in San Antonio, I’m on the program.

okay .. now for a “did it influence you” question.

I know that the recent history of Yugoslavia MUST have impacted on the wonderful performance of Mira
Furlan in “Rumors, Bargains and Lies.” I have seen footage of Sarajevo and heard from many who were
privilaged enough to visit that city. Prior to the war, Sarajevo was considered by manay to be a jewel in the
crown of Europe. When I watched Delenn’s speech regarding her memories of the capital of Minbar and
her pain at hearing of it’s destruction, it was all too easy to think that Mira must feel those emotions for the
cities and country she has lost.

Although I know the civil war on Minbar must be an integral element of the 5 year arc (I refuse to
contemplate it being shortened to a 4 year “segment”), did the history of Mira lead to the scene we saw. I
know that you have shown an extremely adept abilty to weave the personal influences and behaviors of the
actors into their characters – giving them the depth and personality rarely exhibited in syndicated shows.

I thought it was so … incredible, the strong warrior (regardless of her caste) showing the tenderness and pain
of her memories and loss.

DID you right this scene specifically for Mira playing Delenn, would you have written it differently for
another actress who did not have the background of Mira?

Actually, I think that the Worker Caste is staying out of it. To borrow a DS9/Ferengi line, “War is good for

OK, The Minbari occasionally put out offerings for Valen, in hopes of his one day returning. Dellen also
said that much of Valen’s life is still ubknown, and there is no record of his death. Or something along
those lines. (From Atonement…)

We know that Sinclair has traveled throughtime before, why not again? Valen *didn’t* die in the past, that
is why there is no record of his death. He came back to the future. To witness B5s destruction? Maybe to
try and avert it? Something to do with the final episode?

Ok, let me first say that I think you’re reading too much into this. I think that JMS had Sinclair say season
one’s credits because Sinclair was the CO of Babylon 5. We could understand that. By the time Season
three came around, we had gotten used to the characters, and he was able to let Ivanova say it.
But as I believe, although the Season 4 intro and maybe previous season intros were in past, I believe the

JMS doesn’t come that often because he’s busy. Since this is a fan area, if there is a question that can be

Consider this, if you will. We know that there is no record of Valen’s death- he left Mimbar and years later
his children returned. But what happened to Sinclair. What if, he went back to Earth – at that time. I mean,
this was several thousand years ago- what if he cam eback to earth with his two Vorlon comanions– Jesus
and his angels– Maybe he never disappeared- he merely changed his name.

I don’t recall any mention of Jesus having a bone sticking out of his head…

Since the last Shadow War was in Earth’s 13th Century, the implication of Sinclair having anything to do
with Christ is off by about 1,300 years.

Sinclair/Valen went back 1000 years. I seem to recall Jesus was around 2000 years ago.

Yes…but in the episode, Points of Departure, Lennier states that the Minbari soul migration started “2000”
years ago. Since Sinclair is the focal point of the migration, it’s still possible.

I don’t know whether the 2000 / 1000 year thing was ever resolved. It might be that Lennier’s description
of events were in earth years, while Delenn’s description of the last great war was in Minbari.

Hmmm … I’ll have to go back and look at the tape. I thought Lennier said 1,000 years ago. That would
certainly be far more consistent with subsequent information unveiled in the series. The “soul” migration
can be explained by Sinclair’s human DNA entering the Minbari bloodline. We don’t know what tests the
Minbari used to determine that Sinclair (and others) had a Minbari “soul.” My assumption would be that it
was a DNA test of some sort. Since Sinclair cross-pollinated the two species without the Minbari’s
knowledge, one could see how they’d easily assume that humans had a Minbari soul.

Let’s not forget that B5 takes place in the future. Which means that even when they say 2,000 years, it’s not
2,000 years from now. It’s 2,000 years from B5 time. (Please forgive me for not having the exact date in my
head at the moment.)

Maybe it’s Sinclair’s body that is imaged in the Shroud of Turin??? (dated at circa 1300ad by
carbondating).

Jesus may have had a bone to pick with people, particularly moneylenders, but I seem to recall the soldiers
were casting lots over his robe, not his head file.

image to imprint on the Shroud…

JMS:
I was very moved by Neroon’s sacrifice in Moments. It reminded me of his statement to Delenn in Gray 17
is Missing after he fought with Marcus to prevent Delenn from being appointed Enthil’za. The gist of
which was he could not lead the Rangers because he did not think they would die for him as Marcus was
willing to die for Delenn. Now Neroon has died for Delenn. Totally unexpected – a surprising twist – I
never saw it coming. One of the reasons I’m drawn to B5 is that the characters are multi-dimensional and
not entirely predictable. One of the joys of observing a talented writer.

I attended I-Con this winter at which you were asked whether it was difficult to sell B5 to the suits because
it was an ongoing saga as opposed to an episodic format. You said that wasn’t the problem and I think
someone in the audience mentioned the saga like qualities of soap operas. Query: Did any of the suits
express difficulty with a show that had a definite expiration date – 5 years – and could not run any longer
even if it became a gigantic cash cow? Being geared to the $$$$ I would think that would have caused
someone to give pause. Did it? Or were they all doubting cynics and did not give it more than a year?

Kind of tought to get on the payroll at B5 isn’t it? I mean all Lyta did was show how the Shadow ships
could be stopped, expose the spy in B5’s ranks, help stop Kosh 2, act as condit for the conversation that
wins the whole Shadow war and she STILL NOT ON THE PAYROLL?????!??!!!! Isn’t Dr-I’m running
the underground railroad for Telepaths-Franklin on the B5 command staff? Lyta served on a White Star, a
part Mimbari ship. Didn’t we see that the Mimbari have some rules about feeding telepaths in an earlier
episode???? Did I miss a scene where Lyta turned down a paycheck from Sheridan? Seems to me we could
find work for her somewhere. Whitestar 2 resident Telepath springs to mind as a good job. I believe the
Draq are still using Shadow technology.

JMS: A question about Delenn’s Secrecy

Why didn’t Delenn let Lennier in on her secret plan? She indicated that she had discussed what she was
going to do with other members of the Religious Caste. So we are led to believe that at least the higher ups
knew. But Lennier was obviously surprised when the Wheel opened. Could it be because every other time
her life has been in danger Lennier has found a way to circumvent her orders not to try to save her life? I’m
thinking of Grey 17 when he violated her trust to tell Marcus about Neroon’s threat and (I think it was) Hour
of the Wolf when she was attempting to starve herself to death and he told Franklin. Did she not want
Lennier to prevent her from offing herself this time? Is that why she didn’t tell? Did she consider Lennier
too maddeningly(sp?) resourcefull at saving her life to risk telling him?

Yeah, that was great. (I think it was “galaxy”, BTW, and not “world”.) Random aside: The Evil Personnel
Director, Catbert, seems a lot more evil than Dogbert, though. I wonder why.

Also, I’m confused about whether that Minbari in the background was with Mr. Adams, though, and whether
she has a story, so to speak, in real life. After Adams said his piece, rose from his chair, and turned to
leave, she picked up a handbag of some sort from the empty seat and seemed to leave with him. What was
*that* all about, I wonder.

Note: the final paragraph contains spoilers for No Surrender No Retreat. You have been warned.

First the question, then the comment.

At the end of “Moments of Transition” the clip Ivanova shows Sheridan clearly shows the EA destroyer
blasting the unarmed civilian transports was the Agamemnon. Yet in the early part of “No Surrender, No
Retreat” Sheridan is told it was the EAS Heracles and Pollux that blasted em. Was this intentional, or just
another “Roanoke (Agrippa), your ship is disabled we are prepared to accept your surrender” type of glitch
with the effects people and the script not being in sync?

BTW: In light of the number of us with video capture boards and way too much time on our hands, do your
effects people regret putting those name boards on the EA ships? :)

Lest I forget, this was an awesome episode! No Surrender, No Retreat has next years Hugo award in the
bag. Unless of course you have something better up your sleeve. I have to admit, the scene with Londo and
G’kar had me almost in tears (both times), then the arrival of the Alexander made me want to cheer, finally
the handshake made me smile. Of course you gave us a jolt going in to the end credits (I don’t want to spoil
it by naming names). All this in the space of about five minutes… you’re a cruel bastard JMS. Keep it
coming!

Chris Franke really gave you guys some good stuff for this one. Sometimes it is very obvious how much the
show benefits from his outstanding score. This was one of them. My compliments to you and the director
for allowing the scenes like the one at the bar to develop out without much dialog to intrude on the
poignancy. The actors and the music did so much to convey the message without words. Excellent!

correct the Aggamemnon mistake. Next time this episode airs don’t expect the ship to
be the Aggie.
