JMS,

Having watched the travails of Space Station Freedom over the last 15 years, I’d like to know:

How did EA manage to build not just 1, but 5 mega-stations in a 10 year period? Even with Centauri/Minbari help, I have a tough time believing that the EA bureacracy could get off their collective butts long enough to build these stations without getting lost in “pork” and endless “design revisions” !
If you’ve figured this design process out, I know some people in DC who could use this information.

Question: Isn’t the woman who took Edawe’s report, and was sitting with Morden and the Psy Corps rep the same woman who was “control” in the episode with the zombie guy?

hmmm..interesting question…I just kind of assumed that EA, with war reparations from the Minbari, had embarked on station building…possibly to replace soe that had been destroyed by the Minbari, etc…

Looking a the progression, it almost looks like they had planned on building multiple stations on a staggered timeline, and continuously made changes to the design between the start of each station….kinda makes sense…to make modifications to existing designs as the true effectiveness of the design is shown in the construction of the previous station.

He talked about how much he liked B5, showed some clips from Convictions and seemed to be genuinely pleased that he was on the show. He even dealt with some of the sillier questions from the hosts with great dignity. :-) He also said nice things about his wife and their son. Did anyone else get a chance to see this?

Hi,

Just piping up to add myself to the list of females in their 40’s who not only love the show but also greatly appreciate the writing, acting, and characterization of women on the show. I was a little disappointed when Ivanova was “softened” after the first season, but have come to appreciate the humanization and humor it has brought to her character. Plus, I can understand it as an aspect of her growing personally and in her relationships. Anyway, it IS rare to find “real” women depicted in tv scripts, so thanks again, jms & all.

JMS:
A couple of months ago, I read your impassioned Usenet message urging people to give B5 a try. Now, I guess I should say that I was a Trekker born and bred, thinking that Deep Space Nine was the greatest thing to hit TV since the original “Land of the Lost” (ok, so I exaggerate, but LOTL and “A Wrinkle in Time” were where I fell in love with sci-fi). Well, and not too grudgingly, I’ve had to make space for B5 in my heart and on my TV schedule. After I read your letter, I tuned in to see, I think, “The Long Twilight Struggle”. This being the first episode I had watched since the pilot, I guess you could say that I was stunned, and had to spend the next couple of hours picking my jaw up off the floor.

So, that weekend, I logged on to the Web, and spent almost an entire day in the absolutely wonderful “Lurker’s Guide to Babylon 5″ (one of the best Web sites EVER created!) and brought myself fully up to date on the series. I can’t tell you the reaction I had while reading…the scales truly fell from my eyes, even while my eyes were falling out of my head from exhaustion (I think I whiled away most of a beautiful Santa Barbara Saturday…day AND night:). I’m now champing at the bit, so to speak, waiting for the next slew of new episodes. THANK YOU for bringing this story to my small screen. And major THANKS are also due to the people responsible for the Lurker’s Guide. I know you appreciate them…but for my part, mere appreciation doesn’t go far enough. I was actually deluding myself into believing that I’d have to wait for the episodes to be stripped for daily syndication to catch myself up…that, or wait for videotapes! But the Guide allowed me to catch up in a far more in-depth manner than any stripped re-runs could have!

Okay, I’ll quit raving for now…if there’s anything you can do to make the next 3 weeks go by any quicker…I’d appreciate it.

I guess I do have a question, come to think of it: It seems to me that the Vorlons and the Shadows are two sides of the same coin. I find the dualities of the races, ahem, fascinating. We know how old the Shadows are…but do we know how old the Vorlons are, other than being older than every other race than the Shadows? Are they, perhaps, as I suspect, as old as the Shadows themselves??

Once again…thanks for a great ride!
Eric :)

<< I like the backlit fans too. I like the grittiness of down below, and copy all kinds of designs from the upper levels for stained glass… Particularly like the arcs in squares, etc. >>

I agree that the backlit fans do set the mood well. But in the past couple of months, I have seen them in several TV shows and movies, and they’re rapidly becoming a cliche. It’s one thing to set a mood, quite another when you see the same “in your face” piece of art direction used on two different shows a day or two apart. Babylon 5 has been using the backlit fans for quite a while (I seem to recall a whole wall of small, backlit fans in one episode). Now I’ve started to see it in shows such as Strange Luck — where, for all I know, it may be an homage to the art direction in B5 (they do a lot of “artsy” set design and camera work, part of the ambiance of THEIR show).

On the other hand, how many times have you seen a “down at the heels” private detective in a shabby office, drinking cheap rotgut out of a bottle he keeps in the file cabinet?

I thought only computer programmers lived that way.

According to the Babylon 5 screensaver from Sound Sources, Delenn is 45 years old; this is physiologically equivalent to human aged 31.

Posts from JMS hint that Delenn may have lost a good deal of her Minbari longevity when she acquired human attributes.

B1-B3 were sabotaged in the very early stages of construction; only B4 went through to the final stages, and they spent most of their money on that one. When it zipped out, B5 was built on a smaller budget. JMS-

I was just wondering how B5’s decks are arranged. Since it spins to maintain gravity, they must be concentric circles. But wouldn’t that mean that the floors would slope? I’m guessing that if you were to stand on the inside edge of the outer hull(where I assume Down Below is), if there where no other decks, you could see clear to the other side of the cylindrical hull. Now, allowing for my stetchy knowlege of trigonometry, and the massive size of the station, wouldn’t there be a pronounced arc?

Sir, I was wondering if you could clarify a few things- I am not looking so much for answers, but for whether or not we should analyze various things.

1. (Stupid Question on my part!) Is there going to be any trickle-down impact of 4 warrior castes on the Grey Council?

Just wondering about the rings we saw in Delenn’s quarters behind the wall… y’know – one of which almost crushed G’Kar’s lungs to jelly… What were they about, and will we ever see them again?

Also, the silver grey ‘tatoo’ (for lack of a better word) triangle that Delenn & another of the Grey Coucil had on their foreheads… The symbol wasn’t present normally, but DID appear in certain instances. Any significance/reason?

Also, the blue tint to Delenn’s nails-it disappeared when she transformed. Did it have any particular relevance (before she transformed)?

I know these are probably little nit-picky details, but I tend to catch them and always wonder.

LOVE the show, & can’t wait for the new eps.
Thanx for the great ride!

2) Any chance we could see lots of new episodes at once instead of a few new epis, a bunch of reruns, repeat as necessary? (I’m not treating Divided Loyalties -> The Fall of Night as new epis, since they were available in the UK months before. :(
3) How can Londo feel so responsible for Lennier saving his life, yet feel nothing at the destruction of Narn?

JMS … Near the beginning of “Convictions” (After the bomb went off) Zack Allen is talking to another security guard. I noticed this security guard (didn’t quite catch his name) had reddish brown hair worn slicked-back and was about the same height-build, and had a certain facial resemblence to Bruce Boxleitner. This wouldn’t, by any chance, have been Bruce’s stunt double, would it? Sometimes the doubles (like Pat Tallman on ST) get a minor role now and then and a little on-screen time from the directors/producers. This is an odd question, I know, but just curious.

Thanks.

I have always had aspirations of being cast in such a productions, and I hold great respect for many of the actors on the show. As I watched a show on television last night which started with a nice long commercial free section, then degenerated into a 15 minute period with 3 commercial breaks, then finished up with a longer segment, I wondered whether this was a cynical manipulation by the PTB (wait till they’re hooked before you try to sell them the mouthwash). Or, was the placement of the commercial breaks determined by the writer/producer? Given that you have a specified time limit, do you have the freedom to determine how to parse that up over the 60 minute period? It would seem that you’d want to be able to control the pace of the show, but given the restrictions of tv, it also seems likely that you’re faced with as many rules as the writer of haiku.

By the way, not sure if you know that channel 20 here in DC (a UPN station, no less) has just added a second v iewing of B5, and at a good time slot: 6pm on Sundays goes well with the regular 8pm on Wednesday (even better now that football’s about over). Despite the problems other UPN stations have given the show, Channel 20 has treated it well.

Each show must contain X-minutes of commercial time. We then can do what we want in the remaining time. In general, when I get into editing with John Copeland, I try to make sure that the acts are, as much as possible, roughly the same length, about 9-10 minutes apiece, with the teaser and tag obviously shorter. Sometimes I’ll slide part of one act into another, restructuring on the fly, if one act is over-long, or if I feel it works better for the flow to move stuff around. Most of the time I let the original structure go as is; in some cases, I rearrange moderately or greatly, depending on what works in the editing room.

Joe,

In searching the Lurkers guide and other somewhat exhaustive resource sites, I’ve not found anything that helps to explain this question:

As has already been stated, B5 was placed at a LaGrange point near Epsilon3(planet). Presumably, B5 orbits the planet(i could be wrong), but E3 *definately* orbits E-Eridani(Star).

a) How does the orbit of the planet(and, by association, B5’s orbit of the planet) affect B5’s position in relation to the jumpgate(which doesn’t seem to be “attached” to anything)?

and

b) How much readjustment must be made each year as a result of stellar gravitational effects(ie. could B5 ever be pulled away from the planet by the sun)?

Thanks

Hey JMS.. a question I was wondering.. ;>

It was mentioned that B5 was held in place in the L5 (or whatever) point between the planet and a lifeless moon.

What happened to the moon? Ya never see it.

Just curious because someone asked me… 😀

Dastari,
I think you would see the divine beings of the religion that dominates your backround. You are from (I think anyway) America which is primarily Christian, at least historically. You may not believe in that particular religion, but you are aware of the trappings (basic beliefs, who Jesus is, saints, angels, cherubs, various biblical figures and so forth). I repeat, you may not believe in them but you are aware of them. Hence, Kosh would appear as an angel to you. ‘Course, since you’re an athiest you’ll spend the next month trying to talk yourself out of believing that you saw an angel and trying to rationalize it into something else (like Opus, who is much more divine than Bill any day :-) )
Don
PS On the other hand Opus can’t fly, so maybe Calvin, as Spaceman Spiff, may be a better choice.

What caught my attention right off was the clothing worn by the Minbari and Centauri. There were NOT miniskirts & go-go boot, standard issue military uniforms, or jumpsuites. Delenn’s outfit has an oriental flavor about it, whereas Londo’s hint of the 18th century. Wonderful. I’d love to know what fabrics are used in Delenn’s and Lennir’s outfits.

I’ve watched the show from the beginning and it had improved with each season. Girabaldi is my favorite character.

JMS,

Thanks for an outstanding series. Got hooked on it and don’t miss an episode (or a rerun).

Some trivia questions:
1. Is the whole galaxy involved in this series, or is it just a portion, like Star Trek?
2. What is the thing with the ice cream cone head in the new title sequence, right after
Sheridan is shown embracing Delenn?
3. Any chance for a ‘big screen’ B5 movie?

Again, this is an excellent series. I am sitting here counting the days to the next set
of new shows, starting to get the shakes.

EQRIS,

I think that we will definitely be seeing Anna Sheridan again. If she were simply dead, then why do they keep bringing up the fact that she was on the Icarus when it crashed on Z’Ha’Dum. I’ve heard comments about Sheridan’s wife at least half a dozen times. “In the Shadow of Z’Ha’Dum” referred to her disappearance on Z’Ha’Dum when the Icarus was lost there. Sheridan mentioned “the loss of my wife on Z’Ha’Dum” in “Matters of Honor.” Draal referred to it as, “The loss of your wife” in “The Long, Twilight Struggle.” I’ve also heard references to Sheridan’s wife in a couple of other episodes, but their names elude me at present. If she had died, then why do they keep mentioning her? Just something to think about…..

If it’s at a LaGrange point, it does NOT orbit Epsilon 3- it is in a stable position relative to the planet and Sun.

What we dont know is WHICH of the 5 LaGrange points it is at. Most likely L-4 or L-5. Certainly not L-3. Unlikely L-2 or L-1, since it is much easier to perturb objects at those points.

The jumpgate appears to be a few kilometers away, so it’s at the same L-point. L-4 and -5 are actually good-sized volumes inside of which objects will actually tend to drift towards the center if slightly perturbed. Objects at L-1 and -2 tend to drift away if disturbed. L-1 is between the planet and sun, L-2 is behind the planet, L-3 is on the opposite side of the sun, L-4 leads the planet at a 60 degree angle between the planet and sun, and L-5 trails the planet at the same angle.

When she was removed from the GC, how did it affect her standing within her clan? Was her transfermation seen as dishonoring the clan?

Anne Bruice uses a great number of unusual textures and fabrics in her costumes; she casts her net far and wide for stuff that’s hard to make out exactly what it is on camera. Some of Delenn’s stuff in particular is as good looking in person as it is on the screen.

It would be in orbit about Epsilon 3 if it was at one of the LaGrange points for Epsilon 3’s moon.
B5 is much too close to Epsilon 3 to be at one of the solar LaGrange points. The nearest would be the same distance from Epsilon 3 as Epsilon 3’s sun.

If there are no plans, why not sell rights to LucasArts or someone who has a history of making good games?

Joe,

In a recent Rolling Stone article that was reviewing upcoming television shows, the reviewer ends a paragraph with the phrase “… this time of biblical prophecy.” An odd phrase to use with regard to television; odder still, I understood what he meant by it. In the last few years, we’ve had fires, floods, riots, earthquakes – and that’s just here in Los Angeles. Just a few years ago the Iron Curtain fell apart, and the Soviet Union did the same two years later. During the Gulf War I read a newspaper article about theologians that were considering whether the events in the Middle East were those foretold in the Apocalypse. And then Northwestern made it into the Rose Bowl, and that’s *really* made people wonder…Surrounding all of these things is the coming millenium, which (too) many people consider a sign of significant change all on its own.

And right about in the middle of it all is this show called Babylon 5, which involves prophecies and wars and disasters and millenia and rising and falling empires and other fun times that – as near as we viewers can tell – presage a Major Change in Mankind ™. But, according to what I’ve read, the original idea for the show came forth in about 1987, when times were pretty good, the Soviet Union was going to last forever, and the only people who had heard of Bosnia and Serbia lived in Yugoslavia.

(Okay, we were all worried about being simultaneously vaporized in WWIII, I’ll grant you that…)

Heck, if a network had bought it when it was first being marketed about, it would probably be over already.

So, Joe, I guess my question is: If the basic arc has remained the same since 1987 or so, how much are current events (and your perceptions of them) affecting individual episodes? Did you or do you expect the story to resonate with what’s happening in the world around us in this way? Or am I finding something that wasn’t put there?

And for anyone else who wants to answer – Do you find current events reminding you of Babylon 5, or vice versa?

jms,

I read on the “Lurker’s Guide” that you said Delenn still has a piece of bone, but one that is much smaller. It can have hair put over it, or under it …. To my mind this suggests that it is connected at various points within the semicircle of her head, a la a horn or an antler … this is not important per se, but if she ever sustained any serious trauma to it, wouldn’t it be knocked off? Is this cancellous or cortical bone? Does it have marrow, or is it dead? Would it bleed, or just regrow?

Just curious,

If there’s anything we can be sure about, it’s the recurrence of wars, floods, fires, earthquakes, more wars, outbreaks of hysteria, and the ever-present image of our friend, Chaos.

Millennialists and certain others like to point to these things as signalling The End of The World As We Know It, or Ragnarok, or Armageddon…because they’re always of primary importance to us, since we’re *in* it. Some were convinced that the events of WW II signaled imminent Rapture and the fulfillment of prophecy; others saw it in the Red Scare of the 50s; others when 1899 rolled around into 1900…same old same old. Nothing new.

So as far as the series goes…no, it hasn’t affected the show’s direction, except to reinforce that banking on the venality and the glory of humankind remaining in eternal conflict is always a pretty good bed.

Dear JMS–

First let me say that I am not complaining in this note, I just (like Kosh) “seek confirmation.”

From the end of January to the end of February we will see 5 new episodes beginning with “Voices of Authority” and ending with “Point of No Return.”

In March, there will be reruns.

In April and May there will be 7-8 new episodes going from “Severed Dreams” until “War Without End, Part II.”

Then in either July, August, or possibly October, PTEN will show the last five episodes for Season 3 including what you sa id on the Lurker’s Guide as “a really nasty Season 3 Finale.”

I know that you do not make the decisions regarding the schedule but if it is at all possible, could just provide some insight as to the accuracy of this post?

Thank you.

I think both teams have done an INCREDIBLE job of integrating their work together to create a fabulous look for the show. I think your show has the BEST costuming & make up of any show on tv. It’s very imaginative, and the look of the aliens seem very plausible – not just the usual ‘nose/forehead appliance’ routine. The costumes have such incredible detail, and portray a rich feel of culture for each race.

Since jms didn’t totally answer the question — All of Delenn’s costumes prior to the green one she wore in “Matters of Honor” were made of silk. At Toronto Trek last summer, Mira Furlan went into great detail about her costumes including the fact that all her outfits were made from silk which is, coincidentally, her own personal fave fabric. Since all of this was prior to Season 3 and all she said at the time was that her new outfits were being designed for “more action scenes like the one we’d see in the season opener” and as much as she liked them, disappointingly, Ms. Bruice didn’t make them out of silk.

If there is not a ‘ground swell of support,’ Warner will not renew the show for a fourth season.

I noticed there have been bogus reports of cancellation here before but, Please do not flame me. The only reason I’m passing this along is that I trust the journalist’s judgment. I also experienced the same thing the first time “Beauty and the Beast” was canceled. I was an infozine editor at the time and my contact with Republic Pictures tipped me off (very anonymously) that discussions were going badly between CBS and Witt-Thomas Productions. We got the word out in time — shut down Western Union over night — and obtained another, well, half a season out of CBS.

“a source at Warner Bros. (through a very reliable journalist friend) says that Babylonia Productions only has an option for three seasons with Warner Bros. If there is not a ‘ground swell of support,’ Warner will not renew the show for a fourth season.”

I’ve been copied on notes identical to this that you’ve posted now in rastb5 and ukb5, and my experience is that when this happens, the person is spamming or looking to cause a problem, and it’s usually someone we’ve never met before.

Your information, if such it is, is wrong from the git-go…we have never had “an option for only three years with Warner Bros.” The statement doesn’t make any sense; we’ve never had ANY option with WB, it’s all been up in the air every single season. After the pilot, we waited to hear; after year one, we waited to hear; after year two, we waited to hear. So if this alleged information is based on that premise, it’s wrong from the start. And, I suspect, the source is bogus in any event. From the very first day, “journalists who know” have been cited (anonymously or otherwise) that we wouldn’t ever get picked up for series after the pilot, that we wouldn’t get renewed after year one, or two…this comes around every spring, just like the cyclic perambulations of locusts.

We always encourage folks to write their local stations to support the show, especially right now as we enter the sweeps period (February) most critical to all syndicated shows…but at the moment, things look as good as they ever look at this time of year.

jms,

Maybe you’ve had some time to give thought to the “living ships” that the Vorlons and possibly the Shadows have. Do they have an exoskeleton with pores, or do they have a thick cell wall? Are they unicellular or multicellular? Where do they excrete metabolic waste, to an interior pouch which they discharge if safe, or constantly through some osmotic process … even more intriguing, can they convert their waste into weapons fire … raises a new concept for a s__t storm of trouble, huh?

Bravo, Mike! It is obvious that you and those that put together the series are SF fans. And by the amount of passion I read coming from the fans of Babylon 5, you are succeeding at creating a universe the rest of us leap into with unabashed joy. Great writing. Stellar FX. And more and more the actors are breathing life into their roles. Garibaldi, G’Kar and Londo are impressively real. My wife, two children, and I try not to miss an episode… Thanks, Qlogic

By the way cognitive dissonance states that we CANNOT hold differing opinions at the same time.

PS, I still think you should put Geggy Tah in one of your episodes as a bizaare touring musical group.

The most recent B5 novel, “Clark’s Law” is very FULL of detail, and I get the impression that JMS has gone over it with a “fine tooth comb.” The book says that Babylon 5 is at the L5 point formed by the planet and its moon.

Thanks. And yes, the majority of us who work on B5 *are* fans of SF, unabashedly so. So there’s a certain element of doing this for ourselves, and to show that it can be done right without resorting to cute robots or whiz-bang kids who save the ship every day. And I think that real love of the genre comes through in the finished product.

Not at all- the L3, L4, and L5 points in the Earth-Moon system are at lunar distance, but the L1 point is about 60000 miles from the lunar surface in the direction of Earth, and the L2 point is about 60000 miles from the lunar surface away from earth.

Thus, B5 would be at a proportional distance from Epsilon 3 if it were at one of the solar points. However, I agree, it is a bit too close to be at either L1 or L2, and way too close to be at L3, L4, or L5.

E-mail IS much easier to send than snail mail – which is exactly why you don’t want to do that.

Whether your trying to influence a TV station, a polititian, or whoever, they will give more weight to one handwritten letter than they will to one hundred e-mails or form-letters/postcards that someone just signed and mailed in. This is precisely because the person in question cared enough about the issue to take the time to write down their own feelings on paper, spring for the stamp, and bring it to the post office/mailbox.

This means so much more than someone who just jotted down a quick sentence or two and e-mailed it only because it was SO EASY to do it that way. Or someone who just signed their name to a form letter who is basically just saying “me too”. It doesn’t mean a lot because it doesn’t take a lot of effort. And doesn’t show the depth of your feelings on the matter.

So if you really want to let them know how you feel about the show, take the time to mail a (real) letter.

Dear JMS…..

Any way, I too have questions:
1)Where Can I find, or are there any plans to distribute, B5 scale model kits in polystyrene plastic? As an avid scale modeler, I like the micro Machines fine , but I would derive great satisfaction from actually building say,a Starfury in 1:32 or Wite star in 1:72 scale.BTW, you may be amused to know that my 4-year old son Aaron knows the names of nearly all of the first four Micro Machines sets. I was going thru my desk today an spotted a GIF I ‘d down loaded some months ago. I asked Aaron what it was and he replied without hesitation “that’s a Minbari Cruiser!”
2)Submitted:Kosh is the Ultimate Zen Master.
3)PLEASE forgive me for referencing “that other show”,but I was wondering where, how and when I might be able to purchase videocassettes of the episodes to date,a la That Other Show, sothat I could enjoy them clean and commercial-free.
4)Any known plans to publish a B5 tech manual or blueprints?

Thanks for the best ride ever and keep rockin!!

In an early episode, a strange creature came aboard a derilict<sp> ship. As I recall it kept one of the passengers alive so it could snack on her during the journey. The think was invisible, but was killed in a firefight at the end. Was this a shadow? I vagely remember someone saying the ship was reprogrammed to head toward the rim; the same place G’Kar says forces are gathering.

If it wasn’t a shadow, was it an ally? Or is my memory bad and this was all explained in the episode?

I tried to post this question about a week ago, but the system crashed. So, here we go again….

You said a couple of weeks ago that the departure of M. O’Hare did not effect the previewed storyline of the destruction of B5 and Garibaldi’s last stand. I seem to remember the Centauri telepath predicted clearly to Sinclair that the station would be destroyed. (I had thought perhaps it was B4 we say blowing up, but now I doubt it.)

I also seem to remember you said that Sinclair’s return in a two-parter this year would clear up the B4 connection. This really twists me up re: the arc.

Is this really Garibaldi’s last stand? Will season 3 be the last for that character? (I don’t expect an answer to these questions…just wanted to let you know my ponderings.)

But how about Sinclair? You’ve never said the character will return in seasons 4 or 5, but I have to think that he must return at some later point, or lose some continuity. Is there a plan to see more of him, and explain more fully his role in the Shadow war in eps beyond his scheduled appearance this season? I would suspect there are too many loose ends to just let the character drop or die.

I give up.

I am a 20 year military aviator, (retiring soon!). Recently, I debated the realisim of “Non pilot” types like Garibaldi flying a Starfury with a civilian. They think that it is not believable for a Security Chief to be “rated” in a fighter, nor the feasibility of the station CC and XO (Bruce, Claudia) getting into combat missions. I fly about 15 hours a week on the average, the rest of the time I spend behind a desk solving the worlds problems, daily scheduling disasters, and saving the free world with “on time paper work”. If the only work I did was in the air, tax payers would have a cow, and my yard would look like a golf course. NCO’s in the past have been pilots in our military, and with the current “restructuring and downsizing” of our military forces, Non Commission pilots are not as unthinkable as they were 15 years ago. In fact the job I currently do in the air (AWACS weapons director) was formerly that of a commissioned officer with the rank of Capt, and I am a but a lowly Master Sergeant. The bottom line is you have a pretty good grasp of military concepts. Keep up the good work, perhaps you could use an military advisor after I retire. Ha.

To JMS: This is CELT56 over at E.A.S.O.S. Your excellent suggestion that everyone concerned contact local stations (and also media) is what E.A.S.O.S. was
created for. Because we are dealing with a large universe of stations”of wonderment and terror”, we here at E.A.S.O.S. have been trying to shape up an overall strategy to cover the national picture, regarding the state of each market(we hate to fly blind, and too precise is not good enough for us) in order to strengthen B5 in each market, which in turn
will color the attitude of Warner Brothers. How did
B5 do out in Vegas recently? The folks sending in to
E.A.S.O.S. are a real good team, but many of us, we imagine, are a citizen army. Every day presents an opportunity to get better, encouraged by San Antonio, we are looking to more engagements. We are taking on a big job, but as the surviving bard from the Gododdin said(Desmond O’Grady version) “While there is someone still left to sing to,I’ll sing it”. We need a picture of overview, general battle terrain(or in parliamentary lingo of an E.A.S.O.S.-a summation of
the testimony), so that we can hold the weak spots for you and strengthen the strong ones. We want to see Babylon 5 go it’s full 5. You can email us at CELT 56@aol.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also re: the religious discussions (particularily Kosh’s identity) in a novel we regard religiously, the hero, an atheist, is told “We understand you are a deeply religious man”(this a paraphrase). It is such
an error to look at that whole question, from the standpoint of those, who having one kind of imagery, automatically assert the irreligion of those who have
not their imagery. We think you know that too, for everyone sees Kosh differently. And we think Kosh is
laughing about it, no?
Hope to hear from you soon, so we can aid in the battle to keep Babylon 5.

Here’s a question about this that I tried to ask Peter David, but he seems to be too busy working on Space Cases to answer it. (Probably fell off the alt.fan.peter-david newsgroup before he had a chance to see it, actually. Is there an alt.fan.jms newsgroup out there somewhere? :) ))

When I heard the Starkiller story in There All Honor Lies, I assumed that the distress signal Sheridan sent was a false Minbari distress signal and the Minbari were lured into the trap thinking they were going to rescue a ship. (Hence, the idea that Sheridan was dishonorable in Minbari eyes). But out on rec.arts.b5, I saw someone state that the distress signal Sheridan sent was a false Earth distress signal, and the Minbari were coming to destroy a crippled Earthforce ship…. which doesn’t make the Minbari action much more honorable than Sheridan’s. This has actually been bugging me for some time, and while I’m sure it’s of no real importance in the B5 universe, I would be very grateful if you could tell me which it was, so I can concentrate on more important minutae.

Thank God, we are getting new episodes!!!!

Were you at NATPE in Vegas last week? If so, would you be able to answer a question on behalf
of the president of the company I work for and one of his saleswomen? ( You may have seen them–they were handing out decks of cards and big ol’pens with an Ace of something on the end
— you know… Get a good deal with…).

Anyway… Both said they were turned away form the WB booth despite protests that they had done work in the past for Bruce Boxleitner ( sweatshirts –I dont want to mention the imprint).
BB should call this saleswoman: She knows him from The Ivanhoe Theatre in Chicago doing
Status Quo Vadis in the early ’70s.

The question was: Why such tight security at the syndication schmoozefest?

And while I’m here, is the line, ” Do not meddle in the affairs of Wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger, ” one of many LOTR references, or are there more?

But their actions were different in the eyes of the Minbari. They see nothing wrong with honestly killing your enemy in war. After all, that is the whole point of war. They consider any enemy ship to be fair game.

I can’t really condemn them for this either. This is not an unusual atitude even here in the real world. Back in World War II our naval ships wouldn’t stop firing on a Japanese ship just because they saw it was taking on water. If you allow your enemy to limp away today, you’re taking the chance that he may come back at you tomorrow. Also, the fact that Sheridan decided to use this ploy shows us that he probably would have gone after the crippled ship if the roles were reversed. We didn’t know a whole lot about the Minbari at the time, so all Sheridan had to go on in setting up his trap was thinking “what would I do in this situation?” And the Minbari did exactly that.

But the Minbari see Sheridan’s actions in a totally different light. This is due to their deeply ingrained taboo against lying. They feel that all lies are dishonorable unless they are told solely for the purpose of preserving honor for another. Had Sheridan faced the Black Star openly and defeated it, or even if he had finished off a crippled Minbari ship, the Minbari would probably still hold a grudge, but they would not judge his actions to be dishonorable. But Sheridan didn’t fight the Back Star openly. Instead he used deceit and trickery to lure the ship into a hydrogen bomb mine field. So, many Minbari view him to be a man with no honor.

We may not see what was so bad about what he did, but that just points out the cultural differences between the two races.

I don’t really want to get into the whole Hillary thing here, except to comment it took only a few months to get the definitive word on Watergate once folks started having hearings; it took less than a year for OJ to go to trial…they’ve been poking into this Whitewater nonsense for three years now, and still haven’t found a thing. They’re afraid to stop now because it’ll be clear that it’s all just been a series of personal attacks, so they keep at it. If they had something, it’d’ve come out sometime in three years. Same old tricks from the Republican fanatics that we’ve seen before.

I was thinking about what Neroon said in All Alone in the Night, that when he heard of the reason for the surrender, he didn’t know whether to laugh or weep…

The obvious interpretation is: “We surrendered because of some Religious mumbo-jumbo about migrating souls!?!” as Lennier mentioned in Points of Departure. But it occurred to me that what *really* bothered Neroon was what Lennier didn’t mention (at least not to Sheridan et al), about the great conflict ahead which would require Humans and Minbari working together.

When Neroon heard *that* part of it (not much of a stretch: if Lennier has heard it…), surely his reaction was “We pounded these guys into dust, were within a few wretched fighters of obliterating their race, and now *we’re* going to need *their* help?”

So, was that what made Neroon especially upset?

My family and I watch Babylon 5 avidly and one thing we always wonder about is how do you decide which actors to list at the beginning in the credits. Most characters are obvious like Sheridan and Ivanova, but the minor characters seem to be listed according to whim. For example, the actor who plays Marcus who has only been in one episode (at least on our station) is listed, but the actor who plays the elder monk (I forget his name) is not. We find this strange because it seems to us that he has a steady role in each episode, albeit a small one.

“Republican fanatics”? And this coming from a man who prides himself on his ability to use words to express ideas? Tsk, tsk, tsk. This, Michael, is a clumbsy generality based upon sloppy observation muddied by still unresolved past experiences, probably not well comprehended due to lack of enough data to begin with. Are all Republicans fanatics? Abraham Lincoln? Are you certain of your emotion based assumptions? Are you keeping well informed on what’s going on? Are you aware of how many lies both Bill and Hillary have been caught in so far? The list is staggering. Anyway, I’ll join in and play the generality game, and offer that, if the present Republicans are fanatics then their opposition could even more accurately be dubbed Democratic liars. All that stuff about “cuts” that are increases, etc. But let’s look at the word “fanatic”. It comes from the Latin word “fanaticus”, meaning “inspired by divinity”. So, you’re unwittingly saying that the Republicans are “inspired by divinity”, by God or gods, to investigate Hillary. But of course, you meant the current definiton – “person carried away beyond reason by his feelings or beliefs, especially in religion or politics”. Not very Conservative, is it? Sounds more Liberal. You’ve got those ’70s blinders on, man; just like you did when you were a skinny would-be writer haunting Franklin and Tamarind in Hollywood all those years ago. Between recording sessions and tours, I remember coming down from the Hollywood Hills to shop at Mayfair and there you’d be. Now you’re a big success. You deserve it. You worked for it. You’re fatter and richer. Not through government subsidies or handouts, but through your own industry and persistence, and some talent. All these “fanatics” applaud your success, while you play right into the sweaty hands of the “liars” who have made it so hard for others to do what you have done. They want people to keep more of what they earn. They want more power for the individual and less for the state. Those you don’t attack are frantic, because their power base is eroding. One built on the broken dreams ofand disinformation spread to those who continue to elect them and the defrauded, extorted blood money (income taxes) bilked from the rest of us. You are a fine writer, and have created a wonderful TV series. But you do yourself and all of us a huge disservice with such sloppy observation, thinking and flagrant generalities. All the best to you, but wake up. Just because you are an expert at writing doesn’t qualify you as a great thinker. Qlogics

I started this unfortuate thread and am now sorry. I did not want to take away from the show or “inject” any political view anywhere! I’m sorry people are concerned about real world politics here in this forum; it was not my intention to bring that here.

I’m not going to defend his politics, my politics, Hillary’s politics or JMS’s politics — it just doesn’t matter HERE.

I know GGL has done some acting, Miami Vice for example, usually playing a BAD guy. My only thought was: if you want a bad guy most everyone is going to hate, he could fit the bill – especially as a PSI Cop. I suspect he would do a good job at it.

Regardless, JMS doesn’t like the idea ( or him) – he has spoken; that is good enough for me. I don’t agree with his view s of the 70’s(he obviously wouldn’t agree with mine). I have no interest in debating politics. IT’S JMS’s SHOW; I want him to tell it how he wants to tell it! I respect his story telling ability.

Let’s all (me included) move onto more ‘productive’ topics. ‘Voices’ is coming out this week – I’m sure there will be plenty to discuss!

what George Lucas did on his latest Star Wars video tapes.

Have you considered writing a book after you have completed the

And I suppose you buy that papers that were “missing forever buried under a mountain of bureaucracy” “just happened” to turn up on sitting by themselves on a table months later? And which of the stories that the Clintons gave did you believe? That there were no files to find? That there were and they’d be handed over in a week? A month? A couple months? Or all of them? Keep forgetting there’s no such thing as objective truth.

JMS is a great thinker, and his show bears this out. There’s the frustrating part. To hear party line democratic demogoguery (that a moment’s look at the facts disproves) is REALLY frustrating. I guess he’s just been devoting that brain entirely to his show.
Which, by the by, is fine with me. If I want veiled political messages, I’ll watch anything else. And I don’t think there are any political messages to find on B5 per se – everything we’ve seen has been more or less in a general context of human nature and historical patterns, summed up so succintly by Garibaldi: “That’s what humans do.”

People, people, people!! The bottom line is that war is hell. You do what you have to do. It is a known fact that the Minbari nearly eradicated humanity during the Earth-Minbari war. Sheridan did what he had to do in order to survive and to try to take out an enemy ship in order to keep it from killing any more humans. If any of you were in his position, facing an enemy that seemed impossible to defeat, would you have done any differently than Sheridan did? I think not! Just my $.02.

I’m not sure if it was my post you’re refering to or not. I was just throwing out my thoughts on the original question, which concerned how the Minbari could be so critical of what Sheridan did, when they were prepared to take out a crippled Earth ship. I was pointing out that the Minbari have different moral standards than we do (not better or worse – just different). And according to those standards, what Sheridan did was dishonorable.

I never claimed that *I* believe his actions were dishonorable, or that I would do anything different if I was in his place. Because I DON’T see anything wrong with it.

Understanding why someone else feels the way they do about something, isn’t the same as agreeing with them.

It’s a function of how many episodes the actor is contracted to appear in over the course of a season. You need a minimum of 6 or 7 committed up-front to get on-screen credit in the main title sequence. This as per screen actors’ guild rules.

Sorry, Qlogics, the sloppy thinking is yours. I can say “Democratic fanatics” or “Republican fanatics,” both refer to a subset of the greater number. Nowhere did I say, or imply, that all republicans are fanatics. You have a group: Republicans. Of that group, some are barely committed, most are in the middle, some are fanatical. Hence, Republican fanatics. As opposed to Democrat fanatics, Liberal fanatics, Conservative fanatics, Communist fanatics, or any other fanatical subset of a larger organization.

Each has their inherent extremists. We’ve seen dirty tricks from the Republican brand before; this is simply more of the same. Have Bill&Hillary been absolutely 100% straightforward in every statement they’ve ever made? Probably not. This is Washington, remember. So the question reminds me of the scene in Casablanca where the inspector shakes his head and mutters aloud, of the casino, “Good heavens, you mean there’s GAMBLING going on here?” That one of the primary thugs on the Eastern Seaboard, Senator d’Amato, should be helming the inquiry is even more of a mockery. That man doesn’t have skeletons in his closet, he has an entire zombie army hiding out in there.

The question is, Did they commit a crime? Yes or no? It doesn’t take three years to figure that out, and $40 million dollars. If they had something they’d’ve gleefully run with it by now. They haven’t. Because it doesn’t exist. But they’ll keep this going until the elections, use it to target the Dems, and if they win, the issue will slowly fade away. If they lose, they’ll find some way to resurrect it again later, or find something else.

Dear JMS

How are the novels tied into the B5 plot. I was under the impression the they are part of the plot. In book 4 Pres. Clark reinstates the death penalty. However, in the episode Gethsemane, Garibaldi talks about death of personality and the “good old days” when the death penalty was an option. Since book 4 takes place in December 2259 and Gethsemane takes place in 2260, I was wondering if the books should be taken seriously.

Also, is the first encounter between Earth and Minbari on 2242 as depicted on the book accurate.

One last thing, I loved Ivanova’s line to Sheridan in his quarters “Where everyone has ….” The new White Star bridge design is much better than the original. However, the Captain’s chair looks very Star Trekish.

Keep up the good work.

The fact that they represented two very OPPOSING points of view was what made it interesting. While I’m sure each of them had in his head the idea, “If they get a chance to directly compare this wacko to me, they’ll realize just how reasonable I really am!”, nevertheless Liddy and Leary were able to establish a “truce” of sorts. They agreed to disagree — in public, no less — for the value of the entertainment and education of the American public.

Not true – I have a lot of friends who voted for Clinton and now think he’s guilty as sin (which he is – the Travel Office incident alone was criminal by anyone’s standard). I don’t know anyone who’s come around to liking the guy.
JMS decries all the money spent on these investigations – but he was probably all for Iran-Contra hearings (where to this day there was less evidence of anything illegal; Clinton lies to Congress every day as a matter of simple logic – he’s contradicted himself), and he was probably all for the ludicrous investigation of Bush meeting with Khomeni under the Eiffel Tower (which probably started on letterman or something).
But I don’t imagine for a moment that I’ll change his mind on the issues. And since we have one thing in common (we both have to get the last word), I’ll be gracious by ending my political comments here regardless of what’s responded. (Just don’t think it means I didn’t have an answer, JMS)

Well, my sense is that yes, they’re “vulnerable” from an ego point of view, but more than that, I think they saw this teeny little ship, which they could swat without even exerting themselves, trying to get right in their faces, and were kind of amused by it…and figured what the heck. It’s like a mouse walking up to a 6′ guy, puffing out its chest and saying “HEY! YOU!” You gotta admire that kind of spunk.

“JMS decries all the money spent on these investigations – but he was probably all for Iran-Contra hearings”

Not really, I didn’t quite understand a lot of the fuss, frankly. Mainly I think it’s lack of grasping the concept on my part, but to the point, no, I didn’t really have a strong feeling about it one way or another.

“(where to this day there was less evidence of anything illegal; Clinton lies to Congress every day as a matter of simple logic – he’s contradicted himself),”

If by “he” you mean me, the answer is no, as noted above. No contradiction. Or CONTRAdiction.

“and he was probably all for the ludicrous investigation of Bush meeting with Khomeni under the Eiffel Tower.”

I thought it was over-wrought.

Let me give you one suggestion. Try dealing with the things I *do* say rather than making up stuff I haven’t said, or making presumptions about what I believe on areas not discussed. This is what honks me off about contemporary politics…there’s no longer human beings on either side anymore, if you’re designated a Democrat, then you MUST believe X; if you’re a Conservative, you MUST believe Y. Sorry, I don’t fit much into EITHER camp. I don’t like extremists on EITHER side of the aisle.

Fact is, unless the bird has a left AND a right wing, it ain’t never gonna fly. It’s called checks and balances. Which is a sounder system than demonizing your opponent, or attributing to them attitudes they do not have in order to undermine their credibility. I’m pro-choice, and in favor of the death penalty; I favor gun registration but feel strongly that we have a right to own guns (though I do not personally); I think the welfare system needs *drastic* reform, but I’m against the capital gain movement to favor rich folk; I think left and right wingers should stay out of the textbooks business because you can’t submit education to political agendas….

“But I don’t imagine for a moment that I’ll change his mind on the issues.”

Next time, I suggest you take the time to *find out* what I think of the issues before you start criticizing me on them. This is the problem with our country right now; we don’t talk to one another, we create scarecrows, slap on them what we think the person is, and we spend our time yelling at one another instead of talking TO one another. But you can’t talk to someone unless you’re willing to let them be a person. Dogma and demonizing are petty tools in a nation and a political system that should be better than that. We’re factionalizing, and marginalizing, and setting up camps…tearing apart instead of building up.

I don’t have a political agenda, or a dogma, or a doctrine, except to look at each issue on at a time, separate from everything else, and see if it makes sense. That’s all. Our citizenship should be measured in the quiet turning of our own considered conscience, not the volume of our voices; the quality of our ideas, not the name of our club.

And that’s all I have to say on the subject.

HEY– I’m about to lose my AOL access. Could someone ASAP send me info re. how to get to this page via the internet? I plugged in Babylon 5 and couldn’t find it… I’ll go through withdrawal if I can’t get here!!!! (-: Actually, that leads me to the next point. When on the internet, I ran into Claudia Christian’s page, and saw the text of a chat with her. I tried to e-mail to the page person, but the e-mail wouldn’t work. Does anyone (especially and namely JMS) know when (or if) CC is going to go back to the chat room? Does anyone know which chat room she logged on, and how to get there via the internet?! HELP!!! And thanks in advance. Oh– reading the old interviews with CC (and JMS) where 1- having a same-sex relationship on B5 was mentioned and 2- the relationship between Talia and Susan was mentioned reminded me that I REALLY wish there would be a more clearly articulated (and longer) same-sex relationship. The interviews were especially interesting because, unlike with Terry Farrell of ST:DS9, Claudia Christian did not seem to be wary/afraid of having her character show love/affection, etc. with another woman (although I do applaud TF’s performance in the Rejoined ep of DS9)… Sigh. Any response? Thanks.

I didn’t want to add anything to this line because while I am very interested in political, social, etc. issues, I didn’t want to add such a non-B5 strand here (on purpose…)– BUT BIG difference between the a bove. A battered (ex-) wife and some other man show up brutally murdered (WHOEVER did it…), and the other is some financial scandal, albeit someone (VF) committed suicide, but MUIRDER wasn’t there. And I just LOVE all the people who just skated around the Iran-Contra affair and are NOW making a HUGE deal over Whitewater. I am not saying that people should get away with crimes (if, in fact, the Clintons WERE involved), but to compare some land deal with arming rebels that ruined a country and giving arms to a nation bent on using them in terrorist and other attacks just BLOWS my mind…

In the pilot episode, “The Gathering”, Delenn hands Sinclair a data crystal which she says contains a copy of ALL the data the Minbari have on the Vorlons. It now seems clear that either Sinclair never looked at the file (and whoever DID see it kept it confidential), or she was lying about that. After all, the Minbari know that the Vorlons are First Ones, and that they worked with the Minbari to defeat the Shadows 1000 years ago. Surely such information would have had an impact on Sinclair.

So what exactly DID that file reveal about the Vorlons that Sinclair and the Earth Alliance didn’t know already?

Kindly don’t lecture me when I went out of my way to praise you for the non-partisan work that actually comes through on the screen. I think this is very ungracious.
As to stereotyping your beliefs, you invited that when you started throwing out phrases like “republican fanatics” – a textbook phrase from democrat demogoguery 101. I know you didn’t mean all republicans (just that new, conservative breed whose views are so different from yours) but honesly, to call someone a fanatic just because they have a new vision that happens to differ from yours.
Not knowing what all the fuss about whitewater is about and why it justifies all the money spent is of course your prerogative, but so is mine to say that it springs from ignorance. (Consistency would, of course, demand you say the same of watergate, and I trust I won’t be flayed alive for assuming you didn’t) But a promise is a promise so I won’t bring that up again. I will say that “he” referred to Clinton, not to you and I apologize for any misunderstanding here. I just took it for granted that everyone who’s listened to two or more of Clinton’s speeches knows he says the exact opposite of what he said before on a daily basis.

I agree that this is a dead issue where no one is going to give any ground. And once again I praise JMS for being one of the few people on television who doesn’t color his entire attitude into his show, whether that be politics or religion. It’s very refreshing. (And the more you hear him speak the more you realize that it’s a deliberate effort that doesn’t come easy – by which I only mean that like so many of us he’s very opinionated and that’s difficult to rise above)

If this were true:
Wouldn’t Talia know that Susan has some telepathic ability? And as such wouldn’t the new Talia tell PSI Corp? And wouldn’t PSI Corp then yank Susan into some training facility?

I recall in an early ep someone saying that telepaths not only make love with their bodies but with their minds/thoughts also.

Forgive me if your covering this in future eps, it just seems like this loose thread would be yanked fairly quickly by PSI Corp.

Hey there!

I have noticed a couple of statements in B5 that may have been in reference to Gahndi, such as the speech by G’kar in which he tells Londo that all tyrants must fall, and another in which De’leen says that if you believe in “an eye for an eye” you end up with a world full of blind people.

I was wondering if this was a concious decision or a coincedence. Gahndi is on off my real heroes. His stand on non-violent protest and vegetarianism really affected me.

On another note, I just read your statement that Turner has bought the rights to B5 after its out of production. Does this give you extra leverage to have the full 5 years of the show, if Pten wants to stop it, or will it have no effect if they want to end it a year or two early?

Thanks for a great show!

Two… Carol Lynley. JMS… I’ve been describing Ms. Lynley to my peers and the younger generation for years. They don’t get it. They weren’t there or they don’t remember. You and I were there and we DO remember (Kolchak the Night Stalker, among many many many others). I’m gratified to see that we have the same taste in women. I don’t know what happened to her. Any possibility of a guest star slot? You and I could relive some old fantasies… even if she is past 23! Geez… I thought I was the only one…

Is there some special reason the Shadows seem to be paying special attention to Earth? They arranged for the Narns, who seem to be slightly more technologically advanced than Earth, to be swatted by the Centauri. But Earth they seem to be party in a plan to gain more direct control of the planet. Could Earth (and Humans) be more than they seem. Deleen has even stated that “they will someday walk the stars as giants”. A phrase she has also used in reference to the First Ones. Are humans the key to victory in the coming great war?
A second question: will we be seeing more races of First Ones this season (or in the fourth or fifth)? The two races we’ve seen so far are incredible. Thanks again for a great show.

To start (as I’ve said many times before) Thanks for creating/sustaining such a remarkable SF show. I have not enjoyed such a SF television show since the originial ST premiered long ago, and B5 is so far beyond that in not only special effects (naturally) but in story line as well.
Comment – as Londo once said, “Who said Minbari don’t lie?” Seems Delenn lies a lot lately. They lie only to save face? Or to conceal? Or to serve a noble purpose? A lie is a lie, whatever the reason behind it. Maybe it is necessa ry to the person’s point of view, and not something they do ALL the time, but (as far as lying) I dont see a lot of difference between humans & Minbari at this point. Or was that another “change” in Delenn?

Also are there any characters/situations that have cropped up in the past 2 seasons
that are likely to crop up again <like jinxo from “Grail” as an example>.

Finally the B5 TV movie rumour keeps turning up over here, is it true ??

Thanks JMS, We look forward to the 3rd season over here <April time we think>

I keep hoping he will be a Ranger or something 3. When did the romance between Talia/Ivanova happen? I thought they were just friends!(And please bring her back!!! ) 4. With all Talia knows, if she is bad now, why is’nt PsiCorps coming down on B5?(or are they?) 5. Are you going to develop the Drazi more? 6. Did all the Technomages depart, or is there one left around? 7. Why did you kill Keffer-I kept thinking you were saving him for battle scenes? 8. Is General Franklin coming back?- Paul Winfield was marvelous and it really helped me understand Stephen! 9. Are there any plans for a look at Earth or Mars? With the glimpses so far, Earth looks like it is getting Dark! 10. Why are the Shadows so interested in Earth? And are they at work on Minbar, also?! Sorry for all the questions!!! And THANKS for a wondrous show!!! JoyBoy23. Joe

I have to say, your talent for hiding things in plain sight is astounding.

I remember reading in your Q&A file from the Hyperion FTP site about how the Earth Alliance’s closest analogue on 20th century Earth was the Commonwealth of Independent States — and now, we see the EA’s policies swinging real damn close to the CIS’s predecessor. “Political officer”? Purges? “No homelessness”?

First thought is that you hid that development in plain sight with your CIS reference. Have you read Poe much?

Second thought is that … well, let’s just say Draal isn’t the only one with the screaming willies. Especially concerning Ms. Musante.

Is it just me, or were we all supposed to think of Ms. Musante as the sort of person we’d like to see in a bathtub … full of battery acid?

And as for Sheridan’s first reaction — “A glass of whisky, a gun, and two bullets.” What’s that in reference to? And who would the second bullet be for?

JMS, I want to ask about some facts that surface for the first time in “Clark’s Law” (B5 Book #4) about Lyta. Please scroll down for them — I want people to be able to choose not to read them if they prefer not to be spoiled…

1) Did you originally envision Lyta as being deaf, or did that idea come about by Mr. Mortimore? If he made it up, did you incorporate that in or not?
2) If Lyta really is deaf, does she do any mind reading? Mortimore implies that she does, and did since early childhood. But aren’t those in the Corps not allowed to read minds without permission, or is Lyta exempted to some degree because she is deaf?

3) Assuming #1 is true, did Kosh “cure” her deafness too? (Figure you might not be free to answer this one, is OK!)

The idea of a deaf telepath is fascinating and I wondered how much development went into that is all… thanks.

2) If that Massante woman shows up again can I kill her? Pleeeeaasssee, tell me I can kill her.

3) In a episode(which I’m thinking is “Soul Mates”) Talia said she hated PsiCorps…But in “A Spider in the Web”, she didn’t tell Sheridan she’d seen “Agent 13″ when she scanned Zombie-man’s mind. Are her feelings typical of human telepaths?

Dear Mythophile, it sounds like you love truth more than myths. And you are right. No question. We are addicted to our illusions; and those like Babylon 5 are healthy and fun. But when they devolve into delusion and end up with dead bodies, like the Whitewater affair, it is no longer healthy or fun. It is dangerous. And even the best of us don’t want to look at the ugliness behind the pretty rhetoric – it often conflicts with what we hoped for. That’s why artistic illusions like Babylon 5 are so wonderful: they allow us to explore just things from the safe vantage – outside looking in. All the best, Qlogics

Again, you’re right. I, in my zeal, didn’t articulate my thought well enough. JMS is a great creative thinker, a force to be reckoned with. However, this doesn’t necessarily require a thorough examination of the facts or the more important element of being willing and able to accurately evaluate these facts and arrive at workable solutions in a disrelated field. He has a fine mind, always has. Again, I admire him greatly, always will. But I got my hackles up…I do not let things like that slide. Not when someone of his calibur is involved; or when so much is at stake. And yes, Garabaldi said it, “That’s what humans do.” Perhaps that’s why go many of us turn to SF settings and themes. Fascinating. Okay, it was sloppy of me to miss the point that you didn’t pointedly refer to all Republicans as fanatics. Point taken. I did however cover that in part by flat out asking you if you indeed meant that or not. So, I don’t owe you too many mea culpas, big guy. And frankly, pointing that out, along with your scattergun observations and colorful accusations, doesn’t absolve you. You sound like a DNC press release – only more empassioned and much more gifted. I invite you to take a much closer look at what’s really going on; and don’t rely solely on the running dog press – they’re far from objective. A reading of “Animal Farm”, with FDR as the head pig and the press as the dogs, comes to mind. And you have access to lots of information sources – use them. If you rightfully objected to Nixon’s antics in Watergate, why do you defend the Clinton’s in Whitewater? Whitewater is much more serious. And frankly, the reason it is taking so long is that – documents mysteriously disappeared, some were shredded, and the White House stalled unbelievably in handing over documents, key witnesses were held back and the initial hearings were a glorious coverup by the whole Democratic machine then in power and the press who shamelessly helped elect Clinton. Their fans overlook glaring discrepencies and make excuses for their indescretions. And sure, D’Amato is no Pollyanna – I’m not a fan of him either. That doesn’t excuse the Clintons from having to answer to the law. It is a very difficult thing to investigate a standing President and a First Lady, especially when the news media, the press is covertly on their side. And the Democratics have controlled the press since FDR destroyed Hearst. Enough said for now. I would have taken you aside and spoken to you about this personally instead of using this public forum; but I have no direct access to you. So, I responded here. And I am not slightest bit swayed by your colorful railings. Anyone who has bothered to pour through and analytically evaluate the available data can see through that. I enjoyed speaking with with you. And I look forward to more of your creative output. You are an exceptional writer. You are a fan and creator of SF. I applaud you your courage and your hard work and your contributions to the genre and the art. Continue. But please, do yourself a favor and take a closer, clearer look at what’s really going on in the political arena – now (not in the ’70s). Better yet, stick to writing and create more SF – that’s what you’re good at; that’s where you’ve devoted most of your time and effort. And we’re all glad you did. Have fun, Qlogics

All your railing at Mythophile’s assumptions in one breath and pleas for more level heads (my translation of what you said) may distract some from the point at hand, but not most of us. You started this. You offerred the “remember the ’70s” bit. You used the words “Republican fanatics” together. Nobody reached in and pulled that out of your soul, man. You originated it. And then you don’t have the huevos to own up to it. Hey, you said we should speak with each other. I’m speaking – to you. Thanks for the political portrait. Now back to Babylon 5… Qlogics

Republicans, Democrats, Whitewater, Clinton, Nixon, Watergate.

Other people responded off subject of the post. I just tried to get us on subject (B5) again – that’s all.

Frankly, any more “Re:Guest Star?” posts are not worth reading in my opinion; everything has pretty much been said already.
For all the other RE: Guest Star,

My last point is: Any person can do a good job whether you personally like that person or not. If I concerned myself with every actor’s political beliefs or religous beliefs before I watched a show, I would NOT be viewing much TV! However, my viewing criteria includes such thing as good acting, good writing, good plot, etc. The actor’s personal lives and past are theirs to deal with; it is not my concern.

Not true. The Republicans only have had power less than two years and it took quite some time for them to get up to speed on it. Before that we only had a sham cover up by a Democratic Congress. So, I say they have only been at it about a year and they are uncovering all sorts of interesting things such as vacuuming the records at a certain Arkansas law firm. I just finished watching a rerun of “Passing through Gethsemane” and found it just as interesting as the first time. The “moment” near the end where Brother Theo (?) introduces Sheridan to the new monk was wonderful. It was a beautiful lesson in forgiveness, understanding, and plain old “practice what you preach”.
In another posting you made a comment about reruns that I took as negative toward them. Even though reruns are disappointing when one is hoping for a new episode they could be quite helpful. Babylon 5 is so structured and detailed that it can be difficult for new viewers to pick up the story line. Everytime I watch an episode with someone who has not seem many (or any) episodes virtually every other scene requires paragraphs of explanation to fully explain whats happening and the characters motivations. Reruns, particularly of previous seasons, could be quite helpful in letting newcomers catch up.

You know guys, some people will do anything to avoid dealing with the future… The main
effect of the change from 1999 to 2000 is that everything automated in the world will have problems, if not urp and die. Banking, air traffic, credit cards, payrolls, not to mention the blamed STREETLIGHTS! Personally, and I am absolutely serious, I’m going to be in Fiji,
unless I can think of someplace lower-tech, from 12/26/99 thru 01/20(at least!)/00.

I think the main purpose in believing in the end of the world is to avoid prior planning! It’s a reversion to childhood, where there’s no tomorrow, so why worry? People have thought (or hoped) that they were living in the ‘last times’ since AD50! What makes us so lucky that we don’t have to deal with the consequences of our actions? Life does in fact go on!

Hello

I know B5 is based on a story written by JMS, my question is: Is the story available in book stores??? I know there are B5 novels by other authors, but I am interested in the original story as written by the original author. Or are you waiting until the series is completed before you release it??????????

Just be very, very sure that it works with OS/2. (I realize the odds are slim of doing a separate OS/2 version, but make sure the Windows version isn’t OS/2-hostile.)

You know how you feel about the “B5 is just a ripoff of ST” crowd? Well, that’s how we OS/2 users feel about Windows software that’s written in such a way as to be crippled or unusable on OS/2….

It was when it was built but they moved the location of the jumpgate and put it were it is now. They also have to remember that you have to change to orbit Perigee and Apogee in the orbit so you can meet the orbit of Babylon 4 and the orbit is large like about 1000 Miles to 2500 miles. And it would take almost 3 hours to orbit.

Nicely put, GWRepBobby. There is truly no reason to descend into namecalling, as it says more about the caller than the callee. However, if I may make a general suggestion, perhaps those people interested in furthering the political discussion might open their own folder, so that this one may be more closely aligned to its original intent, i.e. communicating directly with JMS, a privilege we don’t often get with most television shows. I would hate for him to get fed up with the political rhetoric and stop reading the posts.

I promised myself I wouldnt jump back into this but I couldnt help myself to give this one more try. I am amazed when I read posts from so called “tolerant” people who resort to name calling on a level almost akin to ethnic slurs. I am not going to be dragged into a flame war but I do have some advice to those engaged in it.
This show, as I have said before, has a strong following by both Republicans and Democrats and everyone in between. All this thread is doing is dividing us and possibly sucking all enjoyment of this board out of JMS. This kind of debate ruined the B5 usenet and frankly I could understand if he never dropped by here again. To those of you on the right I understand your side and agree with alot of it, however I think we really should create a folder for this and carry on the debate there. We all know JMS has opinions that we dont all agree with but to make this personal is going to create an us vs. them mentalitly which will hurt the show which I think we ALL are in agreement we want to stay on the air.
To those on the left if you want this topic to end dont respond to these posts all you are doing is fanning the flames. When you resort to name calling you are going to get a response. Many of these posts on the right have been responses to attacks. If you want this to die down dont give the other side any more ammunition.
So once again if we cant live together in the real world can we please have just ONE place in this world where we can get along and treat each other like human beings.

Hmm, that’s a little culturally arrogant—I started as an athiest, or at least an agnostic. Most kids do: they don’t know if there’s a god, and frankly don’t care. Parents impose their own views on them. I certainly knew of the *concept* of God, et. al., but it had no relevance for me. I went to church for the first time at about seven, attended sporadically, stopped at about twelve or so. Since then, I’ve always had a fascination with religions (due to the incredible power people give them over their lives), but I don’t believe in any gods. I noted with some surprise that my father began going to church again some 5 or 6 years ago, but I haven’t seen my mom there since the last time *I* was. My sister’s a believer, I know. She even had her son baptised. And yes, I’ve been in that fabled foxhole, and no, I didn’t suddenly convert “just in case.” When I die, I die. That’s it. I’d much rather go in my sleep than by, say, being gunned down by a drug dealer or falling out of an airplane, but we all go sometime. And for life’s little crises, I have friends and myself and even things like B5. So no, I wasn’t indoctrinated before I could fight back. : ) My own children, by the way, are being raised by my ex and I with a much more broadly-based view of religion than either of our own upbringings. We traffic freely with Catholics and witches, Odinists and Jews, and just about everything in between. And we like it that way. And our children, one day, will come to their own decision.

And I would swear I saw Ivanova….

JMS,

1. What exactly was the last word that the Walker at Sigma-957 said about the Vorlons? I understood the “Vorlons double” part, but I couldn’t quite make out the last word.

2. When are we going to see those new Starfuries that Lt. Keffer mentioned in “The Fall of Night?” I know how cryptic you are in your responses, so if you choose to answer this question, the season that they will appear will suffice.

3. How many First Ones races are there? At the end of “VOA” Ivanova stated that there may be several thousand more to go. If this is true, when will they be taking the White Star out beyond the Rim to find them? Draal stated that the First Ones have to be contacted personally, and since many of them passed beyond the veil after the last Shadow War, that must mean that someone from B5 will have to go out of the Milky Way to find them. Will some of the covert missions that Sheridan plans to launch on the White Star have anything to do with contacting more of the First Ones? Any insights you can provide into these questions will be greatly appreciated.

RPillow

P.S.: I am glad to hear that you plan to do whatever it takes to insure that Babylon 5 makes it all the way through its five year story. I wanted to say that if Warner Bros. ever decides to cancel your show, you can bet that I’ll be the first person on their doorstep raising hell. One more thing, I’m glad to see that Warner Bros. has finally decided to start listening to the B5 viewers. Hence the internet address at the end of the “Dust to Dust” trailer from “VOA.” I plan to pay them a visit very soon. Until later!

My question relates to the whole President sub-thread. Ivanova’s discovery was a vital piece of evidence, too, but whatever happened to the medical records that Clark’s physician turned in in

QLogics, I think that I speak for a great majority of us B5 fans here when I say:
First. Try using the Edit Cut and Paste features when you respond to something (or else all you have is a two-word, space-wasting post with no real message) so we know what the heck you’re talking about.

Second:

SHUT UP!!! Read a few posts first, and when you’ve caught up, you can go back and respond to earlier posts. The conversation ended days ago, but you keep answering it.
If you have to have the last word, fine. But try to speak it all in one post. I used to post several responses to big posts, myself, but I’d never bother poting unless I had at least two complete sentences that I planned to write.

Your “JMS are you listening?” post, and the subsequent “Are you?” and such could easily have fit in one post ala the paragraph. Please be considerate when you need to post something, and if you can, do it all at once.

Yes, I like hiding things in plain sight. I’ve done it a lot, and continue to do so. It’s a great tactic to use in storytelling. The other one I tend to use frequently is the “Pretty Box.” You get a pretty box, and it’s very friendly and inviting, and then you open it and there’s a snake inside. So a “pretty box” episode looks all nice and harmless on the outside, you think you know where it’s going, you’re all comfortable…then right toward the last part something fanged and hungry jumps out at you.

Ah likes pretty boxes….

It’s really the nature of the beast. When you’re into it, television production is one of the most consuming, compulsive, demanding areas I can think of. If I were just exec producing the show, it’d be an 18 hour a day job; if I were just writing this many scripts, it’d be a 16 hour a day job. Clearly, I have a math problem here.

We shoot from July through April, with a one-week hiatus at the one-quarter mark in and the three quarter mark out, and a small break for Christmas. This helps avoid burning out crew and cast, though the writing process continues throughout. (No rest for writers.) Post production also continues in many cases. Because post takes 52 days after an episode is finished, sometimes a tick longer, we’re still doing post through June/July. In theory, we would start shooting again in July/August, at which time you need 4-6 scripts in-hand on the first day of shooting.

In short…yeah, it’s a killer. But it’s simply the nature of the beast. Nor am I about to complain about it; we struggled for 5 years to get B5 on the air, and now it should be enjoyed, as much as possible when not sweating blood. The schedule isn’t that much different from some other shows; if I’m going to go nuts, I may as well do so on a show I enjoy. ‘Cause if you ain’t enjoying what you’re doing…why do it?

But this is one big reason why I’m contemplating retiring from TV should the B5 storyline go its full five years, and go back to writing novels and plays. I think I’ll be ready for a break by 1998. Or a straitjacket…..

No, the nets can’t be allowed to influence the stories. Much as the input would be well intended, fandom is a big community…with diverse views. Which would you listen to? Because when I was just an SF fan (if “just” is appropriate to SF fans), produces would come around to conventions and proclaim their new show as the best thing since sliced bread, and it would almost always end up being awful, and when you wanted to find them and thump them with baseball bats…they were nowhere to be found. No accountability.

So I took a blood oath to stay on the nets, one way or another, one venue or another, for as long as B5 runs, to remain accountable. If the show works, the credit goes to the whole team; if it doesn’t, the fault is mine.

If one goes to the Lurkers Guide on the WWW (I just discovered it, and for B-5 fans, its nothing short of nirvana) and there is a wonderful disccusion of Trek fans and staff reaction to both Ms. Roddenberry’s and Mr. Koeneg’s apperences on B-5. I haven’t seen Ms. Roddenberry’s yet, but I think Mr. Koeneg’s speak for themselves. In two days, the next new B-5 episode aires, with Mr. Koeneg. I can’t wait, not because of any Trek reasons, but because the character is so execellently played. I am always a fan of Science Fiction first, and firmly believed that not only is B-5 the best produced Science Fiction in the history of television, but the fact the the creator of the show is willing to listen to fan criticism and take questions is something I have never enountered. If JMS is working 16-18 hours day, and yet finds time to read these posting, then he is producing something I want to watch. By the way, be sure to write your local stations. It is up to us to ensure B-5 goes for it’s 5 year run.

Jms – just heard from a friend of mine who, of course, heard it from a friend of his who supposedly got it somewhere off the Internet that PTEN’s latest strategy is to “only run new episodes of B5 during sweeps months” and no other time. Which, of course, means that after this fresh run of episodes, we won’t get anything until July (if they even remotely care about that sweeps period) or October (if they don’t). While I assured said friend that this couldn’t even remotely be true, I figgered I’d better ask *you* rather than passing on wrong info. Say it ain’t so….

thanks – *a*

Your response was good and valid (tho i do not attend conventions, i have certainly read in magazine a producer or director pound the drum that his new show is the best [not so long ago the producer of the “new” Invaders said the same thing]) but…
…one thing I have found has i browserthese board is that the constant sniping (in the last two days people habe called each other neo-nazis in this board) take the enjoyment out of reading your responses… These guys (and/or gals) seemed to have failed to understand the meaning of the Shadows and the Thought Police…
Keep up the good work… the only other “creator” that I know of who devotes this much energy to his/her fans is Anne Rice…
