Well, if you haven’t seen it yet, go out and pick up the March issue of ‘SciFi Universe.” It’s great to see B5 finally make it to the *cover*! Couple of questions, though…

1. What did you think of Mark A. Altman’s editorial? and,

2. What the *hell* is “Watch for the ALIEN MAKEOVER CONTEST coming in March” about?

LOL…..CANNOT WAIT TO FIND OUT!!!!!

Later,
Red

Just to give you a hint, the ToC reads “Behind the scenes of the show that’s quietly taking the science fiction world by storm.”

Joe,

Question #1:

I have been wondering about the Great Machine on Epsilon 3. It seems awfully convenient for
the folks on B5 that it is there. For that matter, of all the places in the universe, why there? in
such an out of the way place. You must have a plan for this. Are there other Great Machines in
the universe, built by the First Ones as sentinels and guardians waiting for the time that they will
be needed again, to form some sort of elaborate defense network? I just find it hard to believe
that there would be just ONE in the whole galaxy.

Is it’s presence the reason that the Shadows have not attacked B5 itself?

Joe,

Question #2:

Is there any significance to the necklace that Morden wears, it seems to have a black stone
ornament hanging from it. Is this something given to him by his Shadow buddies? or is Morden
just a snazzy dresser?

BTW, will we ever see another side of Morden? after all, he is human. At least I think.

Joe,

Question #4:

Alliances are always tough to come by, each participant has its own agenda and reasons. Case
in point of the Walkers of Sigma 957 and the Vorlons. There are many parallels to this
throughout the history of warfare. It must’ve been hard enough to get the British and French to
work together in WWI and the US and the USSR in WWII (Patton and MacArthur’s reservations
about this alliance is common knowledge). Also, getting the coalition together to fight a piss ant
nation like Iraq was no small feat (Imagine Israel and Saudi Arabia fighting a common enemy).

Will we find out why the Walkers do not like the Vorlons, and do the Vorlons feel the same way
about them in return? What does Kosh have to say about the subject?

1) What were the big faces speaking?
2) I had a bad antenna dialer when I watched, so my screen was a little fuzzy. My friend and I can’t agree…was the big face coming out of the wall? Or was it out of thin air?
3) Why do you have the track 12 song from the soundtrack for the opening title (I’ve been told it’s called “requiem”), and the “cut to commercial” shot shots of the “BABYLON 5″ logo thingy, but still use the old ending credit music? (I hope there was a coherent sentence somewhere in there…)
4) If Ivanova’s a telepath, shouldn’t she have a *stronger* mind than Drall, the mere Minbari? Why was she so freaked at some flashing lights near Sigma Insert Number Here?

Joe and John,

What is up with Warner Bros. are they deliberately trying to kill this show? They certainly act as if they don’t want it to succeed. After this current batch, we’re going to get another two months of
reruns? Don’t you have at least SOME allies at WB? Since we know that they don’t like to show
new episodes in the summer, we might as well get ready for them to hold, not just four episodes
till the fall (like they did last year), but probably eight, meaning the Sinclair 2 parter “War Without
End” will be late too, and once again, the British will get it before we do.

Jezz, if I’m getting tired of this, I can imagine that the average viewer is not even going to bother. I’m a diehard fan, and even I don’t watch the reurns everytime they come on.

I’m tired of it, I’ve written enough nice, kiss-ass letters thanking WB for being to so contemptable
to the fans. It’s about time they gave us at least a little respect. What more do they want, me to
send receipts for the products I have bought that were advertised on the show?

On this issue (to quote Londo) “I am long past innocence and fast approaching apathy.”

I’m sorry for venting, but I am just so damn frustrated. I know that it might cause problems for you
guys to respond to this in open forum. I understand that it is not your fault and you want to show
these episodes as much as we want to see them.

I know that I speak for the many fans who have done their job by writing WB and their local
stations supporting the show. I am now urging fans to write to TNT and hopefully get them on
board in the hope that they will pick up the ball if WB drops it.

I know that one way or another, the show will be completed and I just want you to know that I will
be with you guys until the very end.

Best wishes,

From: DaveShufon
Posted on: America Online

JMS,

After watching “Voices of Authority” again on tape, I was struck again by how much the White Star looks like a small winged ship piggy-backed on a larger one. I thought this in “Matters of Honor” too. Is this section of the ship detachable? If so, is it capable of atmospheric flight, or landing on a planet? Or is the White Star itself capable of landing on a planet?

I have other questions about this ship too. Like where do they keep it when it’s not being used? It has to be somewhere out of sight, so no questions are raised. I thought maybe they were keeping it on the other side of the planet, but then I remembered that the folks in C&C would detect whenever it formed a jump point. Just like with the Narn ship in “The Fall of Night”. It wouldn’t do to have any Nightwatch moles reporting about unusual ship activity at the station. So they must be keeping it someplace away from the station.

Also, are the Minbari busy building more of these ships? The White Star was a prototype but it takes more than one ship to win a war. Will we eventually start seeing more of them around?

Anyway, I know you may not want to reveal any of these answers if they figure in prominently to the plot of upcoming episodes. And if so, that’s ok. I’ll just have to wait and see.

Thanks for a great show!!

It’s not a “new Marcus.” I’ve tried, from the start, to give characters multi-colored backgrounds. Londo is, effectively, a monster. He can also make you laugh. You also like him despite himself. None of our characters are any one thing. Marcus is not relentlessly morose; he came there on an urgent mission, he was formal because he had just met these people…same as Ivanova was when she first came aboard. Now he’s a little more relaxed around them, and can express himself a bit more. He still has a very dark side that comes out from time to time, as we go deeper into the show. (And anything of a bigger-than-human nature, like the First Ones, makes him nervous. Cosmic stuff makes him nuts. So he responds with humor.)

Congrats! This one was excellent!.

I just want to make sure I understand G’Kar’s vision:

G’Kar was told that concentrating of Londo and his race was not going to matter in the end. There are more pressing problems (a reference to the Shadows?!). He needs to fight the greater enemy.

If I’m not in the ballpark, could you please let me know?

I almost thought you were starting to paint Bester as a possible ally — until his LAST scene. Oh, you catch me every time — “Now viewer, look over here – isn’t this nice ….” and then WHACK!

Lastly, isn’t the command crew raising more questions by directly confronting Bester than by trying to act normal? Wasn’t there actions out of proportion to the situation? Bester couldn’t have known that much of the conspiracy at this point. Just curious.

BTW, can the previews be anymore NOT like the episode! I thought DTD was going to be just another drug show(Just Say No), but it was incredible — you just wouldn’t guess that by the previews.

At least you didn’t build up a starship landing on a planet for the first time and then show 10 seconds of it happening; talk about being disappointed!

Keep up the good work!

Quick question.

Sheridan mentioned once the oath he took when he joined EarthForce. Was that to the Earth government itself, or to something higher? Does the Earth Alliance have a Constitution governing it?

I guess what I’m asking is, what is the theoretical highest authority in the EA? And does Sheridan have the backstop of an oath to something higher than Clark he can fall back on to justify himself when the showdown comes? (The way a soldier in the US Army swears loyalty to the Constitution above the President or the Congress.)

Is this confusing yet?

Was the Narn in G’Kar’s vision actually Shikwan (sorry about the spelling), or was just Kosh projecting an image of Shikwan. Moreover, is it possible that Shikwan himself was a Vorlon, possibly Kosh, merely assuming the form of a Narn? This would be reasonable given the life span of Vorlons and their similarities in philosophy.

This idea of censorship is so frightening because it seems to be a recurring theme in SF literature and is now rearing it ugly head in the real world. Having thought a good deal about the ramifications of everyday life for a strong telepath like Bester, his rather casual reaction to being faced with shutting his talent off struck me as highly illogical. I’m willing to believe he was _acting_ casual about it since he wouldn’t admit to any of that bunch that he was afraid of anything, but frankly I would expect him to panic.

Telepathy is so much a part of the life of a telepath, particularly a strong one, that its absence would be, at best, unnerving. Am I correct in supposing that Bester would in fact have a strong panic reaction to this? I suspect it would have been part of his training as a Psi Cop, but I have to know.

Okay. So then the question in my mind is this: What exactly is Bester’s job? Or more exactly, what does _he_ think his job is? Protecting Earth? Probably yes, and there is a lot of leeway for interpreting what that means. Crushing telepath criminals? Absolutely.

His remarks at the end of “Dust” to the othe Psi Cop (the one from “Race” if I’m not mistaken) are enlightening and highlight something I suspected; Bester’s involvement in concerted efforts to deliberate create telepaths, either by controlled breeding or genetic engineering. Interesting.

Does Bester know about the connection between the Shadows and the Psi Cops? It looks like there is an internal cabal, probably not in Psi-Corps generally, but Psi Cops themselves. I can see him possibly not knowing about this connection. Somehow he seems smart enough to understand the historical mistake of such a cooperation. The Shadows are only using them to divide and conquer — oldest trick in the book.

I remember reading somewhere that you were planning on rotating the show’s introduction among the main characters. If I’m remembering right it was supposed to be Londo for the pilot, Sinclair for season 1, Ivanova for season 2, Garibaldi for season 3, G’kar for season 4 and Delenn for the 5th season. When Sheridan was brought on in season 2 he got the intro for that season, and Ivanova was pushed back to season 3.

Was that line-up what you had planned originally? And if it was, with the addition of Sheridan, who will get dropped from the line-up? Or are you playing it by ear on who gets the honors?

Today’s censorship seems to be more insidious than those attempts in the past. Used to be you could depend on the same group of pigheaded conservatives to try and ban a book or throw someone in ja il for flag burning. Now, it comes as often as not from the left, and that’s more chilling. From the V-chip, which I think just got passed in the telecommunications bill, to so-called “hate speech” laws and stifling polical correctness that alters history books, more and more of the spooky anti-speech sentiment comes from liberals, who used to try and defend us from things like this.

Night Watch is kind of interesting, and B5 having a commisar is a neat idea. I just with she’d have been less of a stereotype. She was everything you’d hate, but I’m used to characters with more depth than that. If she’d have been portrayed as intelligent, as someone who could work her way into Sheridan’s confidence (although that was a damn fine attempt), she would have been more appealing and threatening as a villain. I just can’t take her seriously.

60 days seems like an awfully light sentence for what G’kar did. He essentially RAPED Londo. Aren’t modern sentences for rape usually a lot longer than that? Granted, this is in another time period, when sentencing could be different than it is now… but with the way Earth society is turning at this point in B5, I would expect sentences to get *harsher* if anything.

This was the only thing that really bugged me in an otherwise *stellar* episode. The scene where Londo was begging G’kar for mercy gave me serious chills. Ditto for G’kar’s subsequent epiphany. I am a devoted fan. :-)

I was wondering if you could give us some insight into the trailers for upcomming eps. Who actually puts those together, Babylonian, PTEN, or WB? Are there several made of different lengths or do the local stations cut them up to make them fit? If you know, what is the background music used in these? It’s the same for each trailer, and I don’t believe it’s Franke.

I asked because occasionally the voice over naration in these is very overdone, both in style and in content. Even, in conjunction with the cut shots, misleading. I’ve thought to myself, after seeing some of these, that if I didn’t know how great the show was, these would definitely NOT attract me, but would make me think it must be a really corny show, like Space: A&B (every week, the fate of the earth is at stake). I know it’s probably something you can’t do anything about, but maybe you agree.

On a related note, who writes up the show descriptions that get into TV guide and related print media. Is that canned text or is it written by each publication from a general description of the ep? These are sometimes inacurate as well.

Thanks for giving us fans an inside line into “the biz”. Keep up the great writing, Ivanova is getting funnier all the time.

First I want to say what a great show you have been producing. My question is what influenced you to have an account to AOL and post and respond in the message boards? Also, how do you find the time to read all the messages? Wouldn’t this drive your bill up the wall, or you got some special billing plan up your sleave?

One last thing, please post more sounds and avis on B5. I really love the sounds posted, but there are no new ones out, and downloading sounds from the web tends to be a —–. Come on, please us.

The Narn in G’Kar’s vision wasn’t supposed to be G’Quon? I thought that’s what G’Kar meant when he said he felt “closer to the source” of the book of G’Quon. I didn’t realize Kosh could communicate that well. He’s just as “French” as the other First Ones.

What the Ombuds said was “no LESS than 60 days.” Once the sentencing aspect gets going, it could conceivably go longer. (Usually a judge can say, “No less than 60 days, no more than 90.”)

There are other factors to consider as well: limited space on B5 for prisoners, the fact that this is his first arrest, no prior record, sanctuary from the station personnel, some diplomatic recognition, so a 60 day sentence minimum seemed not unreasonable.

Also, does anybody beside G’Kar know that he “raped” Londo’s mind? Does Londo even remember? Did either of them tell anybody else? It seems that the only charges against G’Kar were assault and battery — not forcible mind-rape. That must have something to do with the “lightness” of G’Kar’s sentence.

Well Ttocs, we seem to find ourselves on the same side of this discussion (if only by a technicality).

I would point out to Mr. Vibber that the left is far more inclined to the philosophy of “re-define the terms and the problem disappears” than the right. Case in point: abortion. By conveniently redefining fetus to mean something other than its origins (latin for baby), the left has managed to skirt the issue for quite sometime. Add to that the fact that the left has for over thirty years played the pro-choice/anti-abortion word game, in which the goal is to make the right appear indifferent to the “right to choose” of the average woman; when in fact, the “choice” being protected by the left is the choice to kill an unwanted child. At least Rome was honest about the process, in that they waited for the child to be born, so as to avoid the health risk to the mother, even though they still killed the baby. There has been more than ample evidence given to prove that the child is a separate entity from the mother from the moment of conception, so the arguement of a woman’s right to control her own body ends at conception; there then being a separate being to consider, not a mere extension of her own.
But I digress from my original intent: to point out that liberal agendas are more apt to rely on radical “re-definitions” in the course of their power-plays, than the right.

Dear JMS,
Hi there! Gracious, you must have writers cramp and carpal tunnel in your wrists & hands from creating the last few episodes! They were so rich with symbolism and very well done. Y’know, I REALLY wish Morgan and Wong would ask you to write a few eps for Space A&B–the characters on that show just do NOT know how to have fun or loosen up–they rarely crack a smile. Its the most depressing SF show on the tube, IMHO. And someone posted this:
<<Night Watch is kind of interesting, and B5 having a commisar is a neat idea. >>
Which I wholeheartedly agree with. I kept thinking “oh, no, not another Eva Braun! Please, do we really need another evil, yet shapely blonde??” I hope that you are not putting nasty, yet gorgeous blondes on the show just to keep those teenage male demographics up…I’d like to think it was an accident of casting. Please don’t fall victim to the “babe” element, like ST: Next Generation did.
I must admit that the last episode with G’kars revelation via the Vorlons did actually get me misty-eyed, which has not happened since that incredible first season ep with the Dr and the family who wanted their child to die for religious reasons. I think you handle spiritual subjects exceedingly well, which is no mean feat for a TV show. Thanks for some fine hours of SF; I just hope the show doesn’t get stuck in the Nazi Nightwatch thing for too long–there are just too many other interesting storylines I’d like to see cleared up (like the Dr’s addiction, and Delen and Sheridens attraction).
Thanks!
A big hug to your 6’5″ self, from my rather mushroomy 5’5″,
DeAnn

Delta4: I think your political agenda has no place on the B5 board, and I certainly think your tirade against abortion shows you to be much closer to the radical Christian right than to reality. But since you put forth your agenda, I’ll give the other side of the story.
Having been a nurse for ten years, I have to disagree with your definition as well–the fetus cannot survive outside the human body at conception–it is not yet a human, its just tissue. That tissue will be used for important scientific research if it is aborted (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Insititute has been doing so for years). All it will do for a female who does not want it is provide an opportunity for abuse. It never surprises me that men are anti-abortion; they want to keep power over womens reproductive systems because it behoves them to do so. Like rape, it’s all a power-thing with you guys. If you were a poor woman, or someone who had been raped, like myself, your position would be different, I am sure. I know that life was not redefined for convenience; it was redefined to save the lives of millions of women who could not afford or bear to have another child, and who would end up dying from back-alley abortions. The women who are already here deserve the right to life–somehow those on the so-called “pro-life” side of things never really do anything for the unwanted children who are already here, and are beaten, starved or killed by their parents. Its easy to say that a group of cells is all-important when you are not the one who has to feed or take care of it for 18 years or more. Wake up, Dave. Women will get abortions with or without the law–the only difference is, with the law, more of them will live beyond the experience.

Archer34: There are just as many women who are pro-life as are pro-abortion. Of course, I doubt you would have brought this up. This is not a place to debate abortion, but just for the record, there have been many cases where a woman has chosen not to murder the HUMAN BEING created by a rape/incest. I sympathize with you and hope that the scumbag that raped you is castrated, but even you must realize that most abortions in this country are primarily used as birth control, for convenience more than necessity. Well, I could drone more, but…back to B5.
Hey, JMS, how ’bout something on the abortion issue in B5? Could you get something this politically abrasive into the show without too many difficulties? Just as long as it’s not politically- correct…In any case, I’d be interested in knowing if any of the other species have had anything to do with abortion in their histories. Off hand, I’d say the Minbari would probably be pro-life. The Narns and such I could easily be seen as divided as humans over the issue, but the Centauri seem like a permissive and relatively unrestictive society, so I’d say they’d lean pro-choice. the Vorlons? now their attitude towards abortion would definately be interesting…

MS. Archer;

Thank you for taking the time to insult me in public.

I appreciate your point of view (though I don’t agree with it), but you missed the point of my post (actually, you proved it twice, by mentioning how the dictionary was rewritten for convenience of salved conscience). I have great sympathy for you and others who have been raped, or abused, or otherwise mistreated (I work at a continuation school where most, if not all, of the students have such a background), but in real life, as in school, the name of the game is *responsbility*. I find abortion to be an irresponsible act of the highest order, for it fails to take into account the new life formed in the womb. As to the “tissue” argument, if you were able to detect a birth and abort it inside of 3 weeks from conception, you *might* have something going. However, it is widely known that most abortions occur after 7 weeks of development, at which point there are brainwaves and a heartbeat. There are also fingers, toes, arms, legs, eyes, ears, a brain, spinal cord, digestive tract, processing of nutrients and waste products, *Awareness of PAIN*, – sound like any “tissue” you know? As a nurse, you should be aware of this information yourself ( or at least tell me where you practice, so I’ll not burden you with my “troublesome, inconvenient life”).

But again, I digress.

Under the welfare state, I’m suprised that anyone would say no one can afford a child anymore. We pay for them all the time, and now the President wants us to pay for their deaths… but we won’t go there.

Again, I have sympathy and concern for those who have been abused, and, in my own life, go out of my way to make sure that others are not, as well. Abuse is wrong, and forcing abuse on the helpless is ultimately wrong.

But, you’re still entitled to your opinion.

JMS,

How much did General Hague turn over to the media about Clark? They already had the testimony from his doctor that Clark was not sick when he left Earth Force One. Did that go public, too? Or are they holding back in case they need another round in the chamber?

During the Austin showing of “Dust to Dust” last night, at an intense moment during G’Kar/Londo’s vision/ dream, it became obvious our local station was having “technical difficulties” when all of a sudden a scene from BAYWATCH appeared and then the TV went black.

Even though it was frustrating, not to say maddening, it was also such a hoot to see David Hasselhoff and bathing-suited company in the middle of G’kar’s profound experience ( or gee, would those have been visions of Pamela Anderson in Londo’s head?!), I was howling with laughter.

Which led me to think, are you ever tempted to do a no-holds-barred parody of B5? after last night’s unplanned one, I could see a lot of possibilities there…..

Subj: Writing for TV

From: DBLUMGART
Posted on: America Online

Dear Mr. Straczynski:

My questions have to do with the nature of fiction vs. television. They were prompted by a minor scene in Dust to Dust. Youll recall where Garbaldi and Bester are interrogating a station lowlife and Bester bluffs the suspect into cooperation by pretending to read his guilt. Afterwards Garibaldi naively asks Bester whether the blocking drug is working.

Now a defining element of Garibaldis character as youve written it over the three seasons is his street smart competence. If I could guess what Bester was up to, surely the Garibaldi Ive come to know would instantly understand the situation Thus this scene contradicted my expectations for the character and didnt work for me — though the episode as a whole was quite fine.

Since with a writer of your caliber few things happen by accident, I wonder if you chose to have this scene play this way because of the medium. To put it another way, would you have written it that way in a novel?

If, as I suspect, you would have written it differently in a work of fiction, what characteristic of television prompted your decision?
— The difficulty in visual media of portraying interior monologues?
— The compression of the medium (Id guess a average hour-long script has as
many words as a short story, if that.)
— The fact that some percentage of the audience was new to the show and doesnt have expectations for Garibaldi?
— Or that TV audiences as a mass are perhaps less sophisticated (as compared to the readership of a novel) and need things spelled out.

Thanks in advance. And most of all, thank you for Babylon 5. It is the only (and I mean only) program our family watches on a regular basis.

Last night, my B5 station really messed up transmission of “Dust to Dust”. Right in the key scene where G’Kar was talking to his father in Londo’s mind, the transmission dissolved into Baywatch! Then, I waited in horror through 15 commercials, and as many public service announcements, then they(KEYE 42) didn’t even fix the problem- they showed the War of the Roses instead! Help! Oh please, some one have mercy and send me a copy of the scene, or at least tell me it will be repeated soon JMS! It really stinks to wait months for an episode an then to have it messed up! BTW, I had the idea in my head that Lyta was to be in “Dust to Dust”…was she originally supposed to be and when will we see her again this season? Thanks.

On AOL and other sites you have lamented the fact that people are in a hurry for the war, and you talk about how in this society people want instant gratification. I will not disagree on the point about society as a whole, but regarding the war I would , since I have been wondering when it would srart. reason we are on the 51 st. episode of B5 2/12 years down the road. longer for those of us who have been waiting since “Midnight on the Firing Line” I would not call over 2 1\2 years down the road instant gratification. I would call it patience.

JMS I hope you are not going to let G’Kar be a telepath. I envisioned the last show as a fight for control good vs evil that Talia, Ivanova, and Lyta would all fight for control of Psi Corps and all telepaths in the Solar System.while in Bikinis as they mud wrestle for control. Throwing G’Kar in there destroys my dream.

JMS,

Okay, they were afraid Psicorps would illicilty read their minds if they allowed them on the station. And I realize all telepaths are strictly regulated. But, if the corps is corrupt enough to read their minds anyway, why risk sending someone in the open? Why not just smuggle someone aboard and do it in secret? It seems to me that you need some way to explain why Sheridan & co. aren’t in constant fear of that. After all, they’re basically all dead if either the Rangers or the fact they distributed the tape comes out…

Hey there!

Now that we’ve seen G’kar severly beat up Londo, and the fact that any Narn who harms a Centauri will have his family killed, will Londo have G’kar’s family killed, or will he down play what happened?

Also, a while back I asked about Ghandi references, and it seems that G’kar’s vision changed him, he seemed much more peaceful. Will he be changing his violent ways and take on a non-violent life?

It would be very interesting to see him fight the Centauri the same way that Ghandi fought against the English. Or, did the vision tell him to forget about that fight and look towards the Shadow war?

Thanks for a great show!

Ah, but Delta4, forcing your opinion of what constitutes ‘life’ on my rights is the ultimate form of abuse.

You have the right to your opinion, I never said you didn’t–I just stated an opposing viewpoint; if you don’t like those, you should join the nightwatch.

Anything else you want to say about the subject, feel free to e-mail me instead of posting–those who want to discuss B5 don’t need to be subjected to an argument that has nothing to do with the show.

I don’t practice at any local hospital, I left the medical profession because there were way too many insane so-called “right to life” people MURDERING human beings who are already here by shooting them on their way in or out of clinics. Interesting that non-viable tissue is more important to some people than those who are already here. My mother still works for planned parenthood, and would be glad to show you the statistics that prove you wrong. Many women go into clinics for pap-smears, not abortions, but they, too are targets for the ‘right to life’ gunmen.

Keep your opinions off of my body, and we won’t have a problem.

What’s being lost here, though, is that this show operates on the level of metaphor as much as it operates out in the open. The shadow war is also the war within ourselves as much as it is Out There. So Nightwatch, the political situation back home, are shadow wars of their own.

That said, however, there’s shooting aplenty in the course of this season.

Because it takes a certain amount of power, effort and skill to get detailed information about someone. A P5-P7 can get strong emotions, some details, in brief bursts, but they’re not always as good on the big picture. A P10 is needed for strong scans, particularly if the person is resisting. That means a psi cop, and they’re all registered.

I am an orginal ST fan and have not been too impressed with the new offshoots like Next Gen and DS9. I was amazed on how hooked I became on B5. I love the characters, graphics, plot twists, story and content. I love Garibaldi’s sarcasm and humor. It is just like mine. My work has me working on a 6 month project in Atlanta which ends in March. I return every other weekend to my home in Harlingen, Tx. I miss many episodes since Harlingen no longer carries the show. I only see it in Atlanta at 1am Sunday morning. Since I am missing so many episodes (I used to record to VCR every week) I am dying to see the series come out on video so that I can purchase missing episodes. If the series never becomes available on video it will be tragic. B5 is the only show that I bother to watch. The rest of the programming I find pretty boring. Please consider video production for those of us who miss episodes. I am sure that there are alot of people out there who would like to purchase the series. Keep up the fantastic work. If the show was just graphics and special effects it would have died out along time ago. It is the story and content that really keeps it alive. Thanks for great entertainment that anyone in the family can watch!

>>Is there any significance to the necklace that Morden wears, it seems to have a black stone
ornament hanging from it. Is this something given to him by his Shadow buddies? or is Morden
just a snazzy dresser?<<

There was recently an article about this in the Ed Wasser newsletter. It is made of some kind of meteor called Moldavinium or something like that. According to Ed, he bought the $100+ stone before he played Morden, as a way of getting in touch with Morden’s ‘darker character’. He said he wanted it because it seemed like something that Morden would use for inner strength or security. JMS said that he could use it, and the rest is history. Ed said that the only time he wears it is when he plays Morden.
The actor also speculated on where our associate picked up the item. He thought it would be ‘cool’ if the stone was a souvenier from the Icarus.
Jokes have spread about other possible origins or meanings behind the jewel. (some examples: That it was the dead captain’s stress-buster; that it might have been given to him by Anna Sheridan; that it could be the remains of Anna Sheridan; etc.) My personal favorite is a spin on the interrogation scene from ITSOZ:
Sheridan hands Morden a picture of Anna. Morden examines the photo and responds, “Anna Sheridan… very pretty,” after which he mutters under his breath, “Well, she *used* to be!”
>>BTW, will we ever see another side of Morden? after all, he is human. At least I think<<

I think we might get a view of the ‘inside’ if some of JMS’ comments about Morden’s end are accurate.

So laughter is his defence mechanism? He uses it to feel secure and ‘useful’ when unnerved?
Laughter is usually found ingrained in people with unhappy childhoods. He must have been ridiculed or insulted in such a way that he had to use laughter as an offensive to counter such abuse… It makes me wonder if his fear of the cosmic is related; perhaps he was always moving to new planets or he was in space a lot. Often one becomes uncomfortable when they do not understand or fit in, and this may have something to do with why Ivanova was pissed why he was humorous. I hope he never encounters a manifestation of the infinite (such as a time-machine, or immortal), or he might snap and end up useless, I think. Also, many good stand-up comedians start out this way, so it can’t be all bad!
Just imagine using Dana Gould against the Shadows…
“I know hat you’re sensitive to others’ perceptions of you, but it is you and you alone who can look inside and turn Mr Frown into A Big Smile! It only takes one eye to look inside your heart; you’ve got 14 eyes. Make the best of them. Remember, the only good that comes from light is the ability to see why your life really sucks!”

Sorry, I was forced to listen to “Psycho-Cybernetics” and hen I watched the Comedy Channel…

If I were the bad guy, I would keep Talia until I had all of the information she’d collected, and then I’d send her back, pretending to be “cured”(because good guys are too sentimental not to fall for it) to get more info. out of them. Therefore, by the typical bad guy mentality, Bester wouldn’t “disect” Talia(as in kill her). Besides, Bester seemed to have a certain, “infatuation” with Talia…

You have to think about Ivanova’s history here. Her mother was a telepath who refused to be registered and trained by Psi-Corps. She was forced to take the sleeper drugs and apparently this is an unpleasant way to live over a long period of time. You are, after all, suppressing a natural inborn ability. Bester’s reaction to it suggests also that it shuts off _everything_ about someone’s ability to be telepathic, including _receiving_ thoughts from others. This would be, at best, distressing.

Ivanova’s mother eventually committed suicide. It’s obvious too that Ivanova’s bond with her was very, very close. I think her rage at Bester and people like him (Psi Cops) is perfectly understandable, and she would also be correct in her assessment that “nothing works with [them], nothing but force.” Does Bester strike you as the sort of man easily deflected from his purpose? And Kelsey sure didn’t either (“Mind War”). She was the type to scare the fear of God into people.

From Dastari:
>> Besides, Bester seemed to have a certain, “infatuation” with Talia… <<

I’d refute that, personally. I tend to discount the way his personality was portrayed in Vornholt’s novel “Voices”, and his behavior toward her in “A Race Through Dark Places” would be more in line with an attempt to get information out of her. Not that I doubt he would have taken her up on the sex if she had offered it.

Just my opinion.

JMS:
Here in Austin last Sunday, their equipment “ate” the tape, and we all lost the last 7 minutes or so of the episode, right when G’Kar was going to make a crucial decision about his direction, being told to look beyond himself to the greater picture. As a loyal B5 fan, and finding many metaphysical quotes in the show (I am an RScP), I was, as expected, inflamed. I have all of them on tape, watch them many times. The local station is on AOL, k eye42, so I dropped them a line. Here’s their response. Any truth?
My friend in LA had some other comments, but indicated there was no such problem. Can you comment, please, I really don’t want to loose my favorite show!
Regards,
Stephen Beckwith (CmdrSDB@aol.com)

Thank you for your note. Unfortunately a tape problem ended Sunday’s B-5 episode prematurely. We’re having a second tape flown in and we’ll air the missing minutes at 10:35 Sunday–followed by a new episode.
On a related note. Many of you have written in to support Babylon-5. It’s a quality program that we hope to air for years to come. Unfortunately financial problems by the show’s creators could end it after this season. We’ll keep you posted.

From: WSudderth
Posted on: America Online

Howzabout this idea, Joe?

If WB’s reservations about rerunning first-season episodes is the “confusion” between Michael and Bruce, then why not have a “setting the scene”-type narration or clip sequence before the teaser? Since the B^2 rerun would essentially be an episode-length preview for “War Without End,” I would think that the regular preview of next week’s episode could be dropped easily, and the time saved could be contributed to that teaser. Perhaps a voice-over over the closing credits could make the point “Next week: the other side of this story” if you can’t do without a more overt preview.

Would that fly, or does WB not like messing with the routine?

JMS,
Congrats on the last show! I look forward to each one, of course, but this last one was AMAZING. I was waiting for G’kar to find his way thru anger. (Iwish it were so “easy” in real life). A little “Deus ex Machina”, but effectively done. And of course, I was very happy to see Vir. I knew he would be back. Sooner is always better.

I am very impressed at the way you have been working in the neo-Nazi and fundamentalist zealot angles, which are so relevant, especially today, in light of censorship, bigotry and xenohatred. The best shows are ones that parallel our own issues, and extend our reasoning in significant ways.

Read Claudia’s interview in sci’fi universe. As always , she was funny and articulate.
Regarding her sexuality , she’s right that DS9 copped out on Dax by saying she’d
been a man before. As for B5 ,(by the way , excellent arc–can’t wait for each new
episode) will Ivanova have a female lover? Or will we never know? The Talia storyline
wrapped up too fast yet I know there was no choice(actress quitting and all). I like

Bester does not necessarily equal the Psi-Corps. They are not the same thing. This is an example of “Trek Think”, in which all persons belonging to the same group/organization/subject must necessarily all think and act the same way and have the same goals.

Real life is more complex than that and B5 comes much closer to emulating what real life situations would be like for people in these events.

I know how you were thinking of Talia, but you must remember that no one on B5 is as they seem. Perhaps Ironheart’s gift had an effect on the sleeper personality (such as destroying it), or perhaps Kosh’s friend Abbutt the ViCaR has her original personality on the data crystal he gave Kosh in season 1? I’ve said this at least a MILLION times before, but I can’t shake the feeling that Talia is faking the sleeper program in order to infiltrate the Psi Corps.

Well, you know what they say… “A million Vorlons typing at a million typewriters…”
Maybe Kosh *is* a magic eight ball, and this just came up by chance.
BTW, speaking of monkeys, typewriters and chance: What do you think the odds are that DS9 will suddenly have a “telepathic weapon” drug or disease? And how long before a certain division of Starfleet (Known as “FleetWatch”) becomes very remeniscent of B5’s reigning political campain?
As for a Voyager script that can equal any B5 episode with “Shadows” in the title: 5 monkeys, 3 typewriters, 10 minutes…
>>Should we be digging fallout shelters in light of this event?<<

Well, Kosh makes sense; better practice that ‘duck, cover and hold’ routine…
Remember to keep your eyes pointed away from the being of light.

>>Also:

Garibaldi has the Preferred G’Reader card, whereas Sheridan and Ivanova are both customers at ‘Bones And Nobles’.
I wonder if it loses anything in the translation….
“No, I will not digest green eggs and spoo, G’Sam I’Am. Not with the Kha’Ri, not with a Minbari. I will not eat green eggs and spoo!”….”You gotta be kiddin’ me!”

…or should I say Lt. David Corwin. I have enjoyed his ongoing appearances – seeing a recurring crew member (not necessarily involved in the action) helps give the show a sense that regular people live on B5 too. I also have liked the bits implying him being intimidated by Ivanova (who wouldn’t be) and his interview in “…And Now a Word”.
But one comment regarding Ivanova’s mission to check him out… tho we only saw a small portion of the conversation, the way it was presented… even if Joshua/David was 100% behind the effort to fight the shadows… he would have still have given Susan the same answer… He MUST assume that Ivanova is a straight-arrow no-nonsense offerice and could have she was trying to trap him (as in the Night Watch)…
Lt. Corwin doesn’t know of nor understand the threat of the Shadows. I hope that when the true danger is revealed to all, you’ll show that he will fight against the shadows…

Here is a question I’ve been thinking about for a while. If the Icarus was sent to Z’Ha’Dum about 3 years ago, and the Vorlons and Minbari have known about the Shadows return now for over 4 years, and it was also suggested somewhere else that Earth Gov may be involved as far back as 5 years ago, is it possible that Interplanetary Expeditions knew what would be found when they sent the Icarus to that planet? If so, was Mr. Mordan working for his “associates” before or after the expedition?
Another question I have is in regards to the first 3 stations. Will we find out who sabotaged those stations. My guess is that the same folks who took the fourth station, because it was more technologically advanced than the fifth, destroyed the first three knowing that the fourth would be built with the weapons that were needed to help defeat the shadows.

Good– while there is definitely the need to remember the Nazi era, we shouldn’t forget that there are others who would make us all into one uniform people instead of allowing us to be ourselves… People who are trying to make us all into their own image…

Don’t forget that the NightWatch is *Very* Politically Correct, a definately liberal construct.\\\

How so? Also, I use the term”liberal” in a very different sense. I am a liberal, where in I am open to change, and fight for e\veryone’s rights– to be religious or not, to have civil rights remain intact, etc. To dictate how others should act and what others should say is antithetical to a liberal philosophy. It is quite “illiberal”– and in fact, is fascist and dictatorial, to force others to speak or act a certain way. One could say that Pat Robertson is politically correct, because for the conservative/ far right, it is correct in their political arena to say we should all be a certain way, according to the christian coalition agenda… So I think Nightwatch can really be very valuable– we can draw parallels to the Nazi rise, and then draw the parallel to what is going on now in our society, the telecom bill and its censoring provisions being most relevant as we type our ideas into the internet…

Classic “I’ll make you hate me so you don’t follow” technique.

Beyond that, I don’t actually think she was faking. It doesn’t make sense on the face of it. Psi-Corps implanted her with that mole personality. They would have records of it somewhere. If she goes back and says “hi I’m the mole”, they’ll just say, “funny, you’re not on the list” and kill her.

I think that I enjoy this series so much because the people on the station appear so real. One sees their “homes” , their life outside of work,i.e. eating in their favorite restaurant, enjoying each others company, etc.. The main characters appear so like real people instead of plastic people on a command deck, waiting to have something happen, as in the Star Trek series ( Great at first viewing, but with the passage of years, unreal and somewhat boring). These people also are changing with the passage of events and time! I wish that more series were like this. There are such great science fiction books that could become wonderful visual viewing for people like me.

When Sheridan walked in and ruined Ivanova’s plan to blow up Bester’s ship wouldn’t that make him a little leary of trusting her to follow a comand. This could especially become a problem in the future if she is faced with another threat from the psi-corps. Also wouldn’t her off-hand remarks about the government warrant some attention from the political officer and Night Watch?

I had an interesting conversation with a co-worker this week. I mentioned that a new episode of Babylon 5 was on, and he said he never watched it. So I started to explain a little bit about the assasination plot, the coup, the Lurkers, the Nightwatch, and the Shadows. And he said, “I had no idea all that was going on. From the commercials, I just thought it was another shoot the aliens show.”

I think maybe the previews and commercials are failing to attract a part of the audience we want!

Just figured I’d use that description of it rather than Macbeth, to make it a bit more obscure, but also some actors do have a problem saying the name Macbeth or being around it when it’s said (note: Jason isn’t one of them). so it was also a courtesy. (Later on, while shooting “A Late Delivery From Avalon,” one of the hair dressers made the error of referring to Macbeth out loud in front of Michael York, and had to go through the whole undo-the-curse routine, walking around the stages three times, etc.)

Posted on: America Online

Dear JMS,

I hesitate to write this incase I am too close to the mark, but is the PsiCorps really aware of who they are dealing with re: the Shadows? I can’t believe the PsiCorps would knowingly ally themselves with an alien race bent on conquering Earth.

Are the Shadows dealing with the corps now with the eventual idea of getting rid of them? Perhaps telepaths are a serious threat to their ability to easily conquer Earth. Is that why they seem to have discounted the Narn as a threat since they have no telepaths?

I’m sure you won’t answer this, but it was such an intriguing idea that I had to make it public. My husband practically had kittens when I proposed it to him.

Thanks so much,

Beth

Your staff’s choices in costuming are the best I have seen in SF TV for a long time. I particularly like the uniforms, and Marcus’ outfit. Your usage of unusual fabrics has been much more stimulating than what is being done in the Star Trek series, and I find the interpretation of businesswear on B5 to be more believeable. I was wondering, however, why you haven’t been using the really cool black flack jackets that were worn during crises in the first two seasons. They were very original, not to mention fun to look at!

I agree that B5 is the greatest thing on! But, I don’t see Hollywood being affected by it…
There was a recent “Hollywood Reporter” where they displayed about seventy upcoming series’pilots or plots. N inety-nine percent were ripoffs of NYPD Blue or Melrose place (sometimes both). There were two blatant X-Files ripoffs, and another “Cosby Mysteries”, as the most interesting ripoffs (on a 1 to 10 scale, they rate i[squared]). The only “original” concept, which was cast out in shame by the scornful Hollywood powers who want no thoughts but theirs, had the pitch “Quantum Leap meets the Equalizer”. Wasn’t this Time Trax?

Yeah, I know that horrible sensation. I try to explain sci-fi concepts to my frinds in Art class, and my ‘trendy’ friends, the most open-minded nazis there ever were, but they never understand. Tried to explain 2001, and it turned into an Evolution debate! Explained 2061, but everyone said “Whoa, that’s too far out!” Apparently the technology used by Arthur C Clarke (which is almost all possible now with proper funding) was too Einsteinian for their taste.
So, I did not talk much more about it with my friends. But, My English teacher (semester 1, that is) became interested when I told her a little about it, so I loaned her a tape, and I think she’s become a watcher now. I also told my Chemistry teacher, who watches from time to time, and he saw VOA, and liked it.
Then, I heard one of my friends talk about how they enjoyed hearing about the holocaust (like from Maus and Anne Franke), so I described NightWatch and the assassination very vaguely, being sure not to mention the dreaded S-F words (she had a more open tolerence, but still dislike, for all things imaginative. You know the mundane’s motto: “It must fit in the narrow range between Grisham and ER, and not an *inch* more!”), until she was interested. When I said it was B5, she suddenly became a little less enthused (“A story is a story until it is a story that requires thought” is another Mundane motto). I told a little about Londo, G’Kar, the Shadows, and the Vorlons until she decided that she might see a tape if I loaned her one. It probably helps that she likes Shakespearian tragedies. I think she’ll love B5 when she, too, is cursed with this joy. (‘Curse’ because of WB’s poor caring for the show)

In Dust to Dust, G’Kar said that there used to be Narn telepaths but that they and their families were exterminated. The immediate inference is that the Narn themselves did the exterminating but I’m not so sure. The Shadows are known to the Narn, at least in the Book of G’Quon, and Z’Ha’Dum is not news to them either. The Shadows have had contact with the Narn before, apparently, long in their past.

It would be my guess that the Shadows themselves exterminated the Narn telepaths, and might plan to do so for the humans in Psi-Corps, as well. Morden has a little escort around him all the time, of 2 (or 3) little Shadow creepies. Talia saw them around him in “In the Shadow of Z’Ha’Dum”. It follows from this that other telepaths can see these beasties.

Kosh reportedly has some wariness about telepaths, although has done business with Winters so he doesn’t seem to have little escorts of his own. Probably that was just him being wary of being discovered for what he is. The pilot suggests that his encounter suit is shielded from psi scans.

I have some odd idea floating in the back of my head that the Shadows established a base on the Narn homeworld long ago, using the planet as a point of operations for expansion or perhaps another war, and did not bother the Narn beyond making sure they didn’t get in the way. The Narn at that time would have been almost pre-technological and no threat militarily. But telepaths would have possibly been a nuisance, or the Shadows might have just been taking advantage of the chance to destroy future potential enemies.

Hi JMS,
I was listening to a .wav file of the pilot monologe and in there, Londo stated that “under the leadership of its final commander, Babylon 5 was a dream given form.” My questions are:
1) What did you mean by “final comaander”. It implies that Sinclar wasn’t going to be the commander thoughout the whole series. You also seemed to imply in some web page, that the Sheridan shift, wasn’t planed for. So, just who is the final commander?
2) Did/Will Babylon’s 5 origanall mission turn out to succede?
3)Was there anything that should have been dropped due to some unforseen script change?

Thanks,

Also, since the monologes are done in past tense (at least some of them), doesn’t it mean that that charecter is still alive at the end of the series? Londo always said “was”, so wouldn’t it mean that G’Kar never did kill Londo? Pardon my spelling, I am a terrible 15 year old speller.

My question is this: It weems to me that the security on B5 is atrocious. When you have someone like the ambassador from Centauri in a position to be assaulted by a Narn in his quarters, something is wrong. I’d think at very least his position would be equal to a UN ambassador, and their security is tight. Especially with his world on a campaign of conquest, Londo would seem to need bodyguards or at least a door that doesn’t open directly into a public accessible hallway. All of the ambassadors, it would seem to me, would need security. Why are they so casual about it? I realize it’s something that might get in teh way of some plotlines, but I’d think you could write around it if people as important as Delenn or G’Kar went around with a security entourage.

1) The phrasing of Susan’s questions only had one possible answer: “I do what I’m told; the chain of command must be respected”. Another other answer would have placed Corwin in danger (Susan could be working for Nightwatch!!). This is all from his perspective. I think you are trying to slip something by us!

2) Aliens invade humans; how many times was this done in ST. Ah, you take a different spin. They are friends asking for volunteers. Thanks for taking a (over)used theme and making it interesting.

DLyulkin…exactly. You don’t just take something and transplant it wholecloth…you change and modify it. Nightwatch was never meant to be on a one-to-one corrolation to the SS, or Stasi, or McCarthy…the whole POINT is that this kind of mentality crops up in new forms from time to time, in different names, different approaches, but at its heartmeat core the same thing. By saying it’s “That over there,” we can relax, since that specific incident can’t recur…making us vulnerable to the next version.

Dear JMS

I thoroughly enjoyed “Voices from Earth.” I especially liked the reference to the comic book storyline involving Garibaldi and the Shadows. I have been wondering when he was going to mention that he had a previous encounter with the Shadows.

With regards to novels however, I have a problem with how they tie into the B5 chronology. The events in Book #4 “Clark’s Law”m take place in December 2259. However, the events in the episode Gethsemane take place in 2260. I’m sure that Garibaldi wouldn’t have made the comments regarding the death penalty after what happened in the book. How much input do you have in the novels and are you able to edit the novels? Also, will you make an effort to mae reference during the episodes to the events in the novels.

One last comment regarding the novel, I do enjoy the background information about Pres. Clark’s manipulation of Earth Gov and how it ties into the events in the last couple of episodes.

Can’t wait for next week’s show, it looks like all hell is breaking loose.

Thanks for the greatest show on TV.

One thing I don’t understand-
if Andrea Thompson decided to leave the show “because she wasn’t being used enough”, then how could she have made that determination as early a “A Race Through Dark Places”(when JMS started dropping hints about the mole- the mirror scenes, “setting it up on an emotionally/symbological level”), less than 1/3 into season 2, which she had already commited to? It makes no sense to me. I don’t suppose anyone(JMS) can finally clear this up so it can be put to rest…

I’d like to add that intolerance to alternative views (which is the point of Nightwatch, IMO) has no political home–it can come from both the left & the right. No matter where you stand there are fanatics on the other side, and they probably look pretty scary.

Oh, no, you’re not getting off the hook this easily! ( Grin. ) If she’s Russian, then what was that

did he not? Or was he just like a cleric-like figure, I mean a person you can talk to, who
inspires trust, whose religion is ( well, I shouldn’t say irrelevant ) … not what makes Ivanova
confide in him at all. Oh, Lord, my lack of interest in the first season is rearing its ugly head.
By the way, back to Marion Bradley and that fan that ” torpedoed ” her book… There is actually
a person Online in the Writers’ Club who’s trying to write a Darkover anthology. Both Larry
Schimel and myself have tried to warn her that she’s treading dangerous waters, but all we’ve

I’ve come across several times that the shadows were old even before the ancient ones. Are we going to find out the anthropology/timeline any more than that? Will we find out if Kosh is old enough to remember back to the beginning, etc.? I’ve noticed neither seem to occupy 3-D space the same way the younger races do. Are they pan-dimensional? What exactly is the shadows’ interest in pushing everybody around? Are the younger races a food source, an energy source, marketable goods, what? Would this tie in at all to the insinuation in Judeo-Christian history and other mythologies that the deities are interested in running the governments? And are we going to be looking into the concept of the ‘fallen’ ones (of which Lucifer was the brightest), that is to ask if a Vorlon can be persuaded to the dark side. (Feels kinda like Star Wars, with the REAL big bad spider behind the scenes.)

I thought my question regarding Ivanova was addressed to JMS! True, I was picking nits, but
unless the Russian Consortium had undegone some VERY important changes, a Jewish
character with the last name is Ivanova is pure fiction. I was born there, so take my word for it.
Ivanov ( male ) and Ivanova ( female ) are typical Russian names- I am talking culture, not
politics here! JMS, your boards are something else! Ask a perfectly innocent question- I haven’t
been watching all the episodes, for God’s sake- and almost get accused of being an anti-
Semite! I was simply curious ( can you accept ” curious ” without character implications or
moral judgements, people? ) if Ivanova was like myself- a half- Jew. Nothing else was intended
or implied.

of the survivor’s guilt. Also, one of my uncles on my father’s side had actually LIVED Europa,
Europa- he was masquarading as a German when the Nazis came to the Ukraine. Nothing is
ever black and white, Deanna, remember that! Nothing! And JMS is trying to illustrate just that!

In TV, there’s no director’s cut as you know it in film. In a movie, you create a film version, score it, then work to snip. All of our preliminary work is done on the Avid system, which digitizes the film so the whole episode and all dailies are on a hard drive. You edit those medium-resolution images until you have what you want. Then and ONLY then do you cut film. No prior version exists on film.

The problem is that we get into a lot of grey areas here. You say that a jew cannot have the surname Ivanova, and/or be Russian. Some of this goes into the notion some have that both parents must be jewish or the child isn’t jewish, suddenly it’s something other. Some say you cannot be a jew and an atheist. Who’s to determine these things? It’s simply not cut and dried.

I’m one-and-a-half generation American. My family comes from Byelorussia. There are two families in that area: Straczynskis and Straczynskys. They are not related in any way by blood. Straczynski with an I ending is non-jewish. Straczynsky with a Y ending tends to be jewish. What do we make of this?

Bob Smith converts to Judaism. Marries Emma Rosenstein (which by you is a good proper jewish name). They have a daughter, Sarah Smith. Is she jewish or is she not? How do you propose to judge that by the name?

This is a very sensitive issue to many people; it cuts into the whole question of personal identity, religious identity, social identity, and culture vs. heritage. In taking a basically yes/no approach, you come across as limiting possibilities. I’m sure that’s not your intent.

For my money, both Ivanova’s parents were Jewish. (BTW, the show got a write-up in a major Jewish-culture magazine, praising it, and nobody there in the article, written by a rabbi, seemed to have a problem with the name.)

Actually, I always thought (anyway, my Jewish friends always told me) that the definition of Jew was a recursive one: one is Jewish precisely if one’s mother was Jewish (converts notwithstanding) So there’s no contradiction whatsoever between being Jewish (a genetic thing) and not subscribing to the particular religion associated with the Jewish people.
My (Jewish) religious studies teacher called it the difference between Judaism (religion/traditions) and Jewishness (recursive above). The practical upshot of this is that an awful lot of people can be technically Jewish without knowing it.

I just wanted to finally express some thoughts I’ve had about B5. I guess you could say I’ve been a fan since the first announcements (the first article I recall was a huge spread in Cinefantastique). I would say primarily it’s because you were (and are) doing something different. I haven’t been this interested in a series since St Elsewhere (don’t know what you thought of it, but *I* liked it–and not just because Stephen Furst is in both!). I have even written to my local station (KPWB in Sacramento) in support of the show, and that’s something I’ve never done. I believe that what you’re doing with the show is extraordinary for television, particularly the American kind and I will be with you every step of the way (so don’t screw it up, okay?). To those who complain about you having too much control over the show and writing too much, I would say: “Did anyone say to Charles Dickens, “Hey, Charlie, take a break, let’s get a new viewpoint on that David Copperfield story?'” This is *your* story, for Pete’s sake; you tell it! It would probably not be commented on anywhere but here in the good ol’ USA that one writer is responsible for most, if not all, of a series. I suppose that relates to the difference between “episodic” and “serial” stories.

You should know that I am definitely not a sycophant and that there are episodes and moments (which you have noted) which aren’t stellar; but I’m not where you are and I’m not doing your job, so who am I to tell you how to do it?

I do want to commend you on Marcus; I think the Ivanova/Corwin story in “Exogenesis” was a hoot and that that guy you’ve got playing Corwin was an absolute joy to watch (as an actor myself, I know how hard that stuff is to play, and how he must have enjoyed getting the chance); and, finally, I am looking forward to where we go from here.

Thanks for “listening.”

Blair

BTW, tell Harlan that one of the first sf anthologies I remember reading was “Dangerous Visions” (quite an experience for a 14 yr old!).

Just an ugly thought. For 2 shows now we have heard about a “Fleet Massing at the edge of Centari space”. I fear an invasion in on the way. Given all the WW2 and Cold War parallels it seems that Earth is being set up for a big fall. It seems that we are the new young kids on the block and the situation is now very unstable at home The Centari have a “Peace” treaty with Earth, much like a certain Axis pwer had with many of its neighbors. Am I going to be seeing a wave of Centari ships in Earths solar system? And of course the Psi-Corp will be right there to save the day and pick up the pieces, looking good to the masses at home.

to be both Russian and Jewish? Somehow I’m not surprised- you’re a great man with a great
vision. Maybe Russia ( Ukraine, whatever ) will reach a stage in its development where it will
be judging people by their abilities and not by what they look like and what their last names are.
I hope so. But my generation and even the generation after me ( we’re talking twenty-something
and thirty- something here ) are beyond redemption. I’ve seen it a couple of years back when
we were hosting an international children’s conference and a young Byelorussian girl was living

the fact that my dad was Jewish. To her, ” Jewish ” and ” decent ” were an oxymoron, and my
dad IS a decent man. So, it DOES make a difference, I’m afraid, to a great deal of people. I’m
happy it DOES NOT – to you. Very happy indeed.

It is. JMS, I have a feeling this ” G’Kar ” ( grin ) is gonna do a lot o f first rate spiritual healing
before your show is over. What can I say- your show makes me face myself- my thoughts,
my beliefs, my hate- and what stares at me in the mirror is not always flattering. And my
favorite episode IS Dust to Dust. Figures, right? By the way, since everybody under the sun
is reading my messages, let me ask you this- did everybody get their copy of the March

I highly recommend it.

The tapes are:
“On A Note of Triumph”-original broadcast 50th anniversary (audio cassette)
50th anniversary tribute-Norman Corwin discusses “On A Note of Triumph” (audio cassette)
50 years after surrender(Japanese surrender-WWII)-(audio cassette)
WE Hold These Truths-(audio cassette)

Also in April , National Public Radio will be ‘rerunning’ 13 of his older programs.
PBS will have 6 new ones later this year.

Also in 1994 , Barricade Books 61 Fourth Avenue NY NY 10003 , put out a book
entitled , “Norman Corwin’s Letters”. It’s a fascinating read , the letters vary , from
Orson Wells to Groucho Marx to Edward R. Murrow.

Hope this info helps!

I, along with other fans, wonder if there will be the sale of episodes from past and present seasons. It would be nice to have a boxed set of old season 1&2 tapes to catch up on the story, or just to see old classics that were accidentally taped over with 30 Something. Yes, someone did that to my Voice in the Wilderness tape. I also hear that B5 may be dumped by UPN. Who can we talk to so that this may be prevented?

SWeber3094,

You raised a good point. I believe that the Vorlons and the Shadows are, as you put it, “pan-dimensional.” I would characterize their state as being metaphysical, meaning that they don’t require physical bodies to exist in the 3rd dimension. It has been suggested that the Shadows’ carapace may be a biomechanical encounter suit similar to that worn by the Vorlons, but of a more sinister nature. As for their interests in the younger races…..OOOOHHH!!! I KNOW, I KNOW!!

I would just like to make one thing clear here. I never suggested anything other than the fact that historically there did/does exist such an entity as a Russian-Jew. I had no intention of causing any painful emotions on the part of holocaust survivors nor their decedents. I have no idea where DLyulkin read into that. My personal philosophy IS that there is no black and white. It amazes me that people who are essentially saying the same thing can get into a conflict.

For the record, I don’t like hard feelings. DLyukin: I am sorry if I have offended you. Truce?
As far as learning anything from JMS’s show: I learn things every week. Possibly even lessons never intended. I share these with my children. I appreciate the work he does and the time he puts into communicating with his fans. We owe it to him and to ourselves to try to get along.

P.S. Great job on “Exogenesis”! I especially liked the Corwin thread, and the scene with Marcus and Garibaldi. (“Thank you Mr. Garibaldi – one of the greatest minds of the fourteenth century!” brought a silent cheer.) If this is the low point of the season, you have nothing to worry about.

It is, I think, a uniquely American concern, since it’s long been common for writers in the UK to write a goodly portion of any season; McGoohan did much of The Prisoner (under a variety of names), and Terry Nation wrote the entire (and some say best) season of Blake’s 7, though that was only 13 episodes. This question is for Joe AND the rest of the gang. Before Marion Bradley became a real,
solid presence in my life, I was lucky enough to be able to stay out of my ” creative ” friends’
professional lives, so my knowledge of copyright and such leaves MUCH to be desired. I mean,
to me plagiarism was a very simple concept- I send Joe my story ( just an example, JMS,
relax ), JMS makes a movie out of it and gives me no credit whatsoever. But I thought when
people sued for copyright violations and such, they meant a fully developed treatment, to say
the least! Complete with characters, plots, etc. But it seems that JMS and my other friend,
Mercedes Lackey are so paralyzed by The Incident that they’re even afraid to discuss ( much
less accept ) simple suggestions. One ( 1 ) fan turned on MZB, so they’re perfectly willing to
live in constant fear of being crossed. Meanwhile, I’m going crazy trying to understand why
Misty refuses to even discuss my suggestions. Thank God for JMS- at least now I see what
has been REALLY going on. But what really disturbs me is this ( let’s see if I can make sense
after a day at work ). Are we right in allowing people like that crazy MZB fan so much power
over our lives? Are we right in ACCEPTING what happened, that Marion’s editor chose not to
publish the book instead of doing what is RIGHT- siding with Marion and fighting that fan of
hers? After all, it WAS Marion’s world! And all we do is shrug: ” Oh, well, next time I’ll protect
myself “. Protect myself- how? By refusing to share your world? Share your story ideas?
Is it really protecting oneself or is it hiding? By refusing to trust anyone? What kind of a world
are we creating for those who come after us? A world where a word ” lawyer ” can scare
anybody into doing anything?

this isn’t a question — just wanted to say how impressive the stories this season (with the exception of exogenesis) have been. you speak of triggers being cocked and released, but it has been more like the control rod being pulled from a uranium pile, one proton releasing others, cascading into a huge chain reaction. the momentum of the story arc that continues week after week to build has no rival in episodic tv. kudos.
also… a common criticism of b5 has been that the individual stories are less invoving than the overall arc. this is becoming increasingly less correct with every passing episode. long twilight strugle, for example has some of the most moving action AND words that have been aired in the pass year of not only genre tv, but dramatic tv in general.
i look forward to seeing the next two episodes before the next batch of reruns!

But, DLyilkin, that *is* the world we live in. Sadly, someone like JMS MUST protect himself from even the image of impropriety. Let him just have a piece of paper cross his desk with a fan’s story idea, and suddenly *somebody* is going to claim that all of B5 is his idea and JMS stole it….

And think of it this way, if a studio thinks JMS is going to be sued by someone over a story idea, then maybe they’ll want to distance themselves,so they don’t get sued as well. suddenly, no series.

There is a *great* deal of difference between the communication of Fan/Writer and Fan/TV(movie,whatever) Producer. I know MZB had a large fan following, and cherished the interaction, where a fan could say”I think this is what happened to character X to make him/her act this way”, and it would end up in a novel—and saying to Joe “I think this is what Ko sh means by….”, and it gets used in the show. In MZBs case, a few thousand readers feel like they’re a part of the tapestry, in Joe’s case someone calls a lawyer. It’s the money, you see.

Yes, there are plenty of fans who would sign a waiver to give JMS free ownership of story ideas, but that still doesn’t matter. *Someone* would bring suit. Someone, maybe, who holds a grudge for a real or imagined slight, or just because it’s easy money…

And if nothing else, the bottom line is that’s the way JMS wants to run his show. Accept that, and move on……

Yeah, it’s sad. I’d love to chat with him, discuss concepts, brainstorm future episodes, flesh out the little bits in the corner, but I can’t. You can’t. nobody but his wife (maybe!) can. Sorry.

someone being so low as to try to invent a case just to make money. But aren’t you supposed
to prove that someone stole your idea? And we can’t just ” move on “, someday people are
gonna be suing US! So, what’s the answer? Walk through life with a bunch of release forms
for every personal story, every phone conversation, every joke you hear? It’s not just affecting
JMS. Now, after hearing so much about The Incident from JMS, Lady Pomona and Larry
Schimel just to name a few, I’m having second thoughts about joining a wonderful vampire
writing circle. It’s kind of a shared world thing. It’s for fun, but I keep on thinking : ” What if
someone unscrupulous were allowed in? What if that person took the characters I’ve worked
so hard to bring to life in my stories- we’re ALLOWED to use each other’s characters-
claimed they were his and published MY stories in a professional magazine? “. And I can’t
tell my friends in the circle why all of a sudden I’ve become ” too busy ” to finish my stories
for the circle. They think I’m just too upset ’cause Marion is in the hospital. Joe, anybody,
what would YOU do?

The probelm is not just one fan. People are *constantly* suing because they think their idea — sometimes just that, an idea — was stolen. Steven Spielberg was sued by *three people* each one independently claiming that ET was based on their story. Obviously, that three different people say the same thing means they’re mutually contradictory…it can’t be based uniquely on all three. Two of them have to be wrong at minimum (and as it came out, all of them lost). But they were True Believers.

And yes, 98% of these cases are nonsense, and are eventually won by the original writer; but the process of defending such a case can literally consume *years* of your life.

Here’s an example of this, btw. On another service, someone without considering what he was saying (not his fault, it just happened) said, in essence, “What if somebody on B5 found out that he had been mind-wiped, and used to be something awful previously?”

Well, I’d had “Passing Through Gethsemane” on the wire at that time, but when I saw this, I had to scuttle the story. It lay there, untouched, for over a year, until I could finally meet the fellow and get a signed release indicating what’d happened. If that fan had not been fair and reasonable, that episode — which many consider one of our best — would never have been made.

Then we ( I mean the writing community in general ) had better start fighting for stricter , more
comprehensive guidelines as to what constitutes ” an idea “. Joe, let me give you an example
and you’ll tell me whose IDEA you think it is. Three years ago, when my grandma died, I was
hellbent on her having an original monument- none of those dime a dozen Stars of David or
Torah Scrolls. ( Grin. ) I kind of knew what I wanted- a very dramatic, very modern looking Star
of David breaking the chains. The only problem is- one Elizabeth Lyulkin can’t draw her way
out of a paper bag, so the funeral home had me working with a designer who took my description
( a few words, really, I can never describe what I ” see ” in my head ) and HE came up with
three wonderful designs ( based on my words, true, but if it hadn’t been for him those designs
would still be in my head ) out of which I ended up choosing what I truly wanted- a single
rose running through MY star of David. It’s quite dramatic and I’m quite proud of it, but is it MY
IDEA? People try to assure me that it is, but I don’t think so. To me an idea is something you
have to work for, not something that just kind of pops in your head while taking an ” F ” train
home from work. Those I don’t mind ” giving away ” because they’re not really mine. It’s like
saying the air I breathe is mine. The salad I designed is mine, the story I wrote is mine- I’m
not even sure my Londo poem is truly mine, since it’s based on someone else’s character.
Joe, am I making any sense?

Passing Through Gethsemane is about that monk who used to be a serial killer, is it not?
I have to agree- it is one of your best and one of my all-time favorites. But what you’re talking
about doesn’t even sound like a treatment, it sounds like pure brainstorming- if I had a dime
for every brainstorm ” idea ” that I considered silly or impractical and that was ” picked up ”
by someone else! That guy gave you nothing- no character, no plot, nothing that would make
the idea UNIQUELY HIS. Give that ” idea ” to ten different people and you’ll get back ten
totally different stories! You’d be lucky if you got the director’s autographed picture for that
” idea “!

do our best to keep you posted and entertained at the same time. ( Grin. ) I have a question-
can we discuss THEMES ? I mean future themes, something we’d like to see. I think themes

IMHO, (and thak you for including us on this one) I think the point is that when you are JMS and you read all that he does in a single day, and then sit down to write an episode, you might not remember where a particular idea came from, whether it was original or read somewhere or what. He could end up taking credit for something he read somewhere. I don’t know much about copyright laws either, but I wouldn’t want to have to keep all that information straight in my mind.
Also, with such creative genious, I want to see what JMS has in store for us. Perhaps, when the series has ended, he will have a great time browsing the creative archives!

I think this episode was incredible. I don’t even know what to say about it yet. I have to go back and watch it again first. All I want to know is, How did Delenn get the sound of rain to come up for Sheriden? Was this something programmed into the ship for Minbari meditation purposes?

BTW, JMS, you are handling the relationships between Delenn and Sheriden, Marcus and Ivanova, MUCH better than I expected. Not gooey at all. YEAH!

Also, (another preview thing) next week’s preview shows G’Kar, presumably out of jail. I thought I read somewhere that he’d be there for the next few episodes. Please don’t give anything away, I’ll be happy to just wait and see for myself.

From what I understand from the Copyright Office, you can NOT copyright an idea.

You can only copyright dialogue …. not the idea itself.

I agree.. … if JMS asks NOT to post ideas here for stories, then GRANT HIM THE COURTESY of NOT posting them.. He’s doing us a huge favor by logging on here and interacting with the FANS….. Who else do you know of that does this… I only know of Orson Scott Card on AOL who logs on personally to talk to fans of his work. Can’t we all just appreciate the fact that JMS logs on here?

Let’s not forget that Caspar Weinberger was NOT Jewish, in spite of the name.

It’s my understanding that “Jewishness” is supposed to transfer through the mother- so she could have had a Jewish mother and a non-Jewish father and STILL be considered a Jew. Her father was Jewish- so maybe HIS father was a non-Jew, but his mother was a Jew. In that case, her father would still be Jewish (although, and this is pure speculation on my part, he could simply decide whether or not to be Jewish- I’m not, but I have read a bit) and also have a traditionally NON-Jewish Russian surname. In this case, Ivanova would be 100% Jewish, even with a non-Jewish grandfather (under this premise, BOTH grandfathers could be non-Jewish and she would still be 100% Jew).

Yeesh! Is this the same convoluted reasoning the Nazis used?

I don’t know how you are going to make episodes BETTER than this — it was absolutely incredible. Not only did you move the story along with a huge jump, you managed to expand it!!

In fact, I used expletives on two seperate occassion during the episode. The story and effects took me by surprise!

You might need a medical warning label on future episodes if you keep this pace up! <g>

Now for the questions:

Shadow ship hid on Mars and a Jupiter moon. Any reason for these places verses our moon or Venus, etc.? Just curious.

Was the “package” mentioned in Exo the blonde woman giving us the Mars Shadow info? Or was it the eggs and bacon? Or have we not seen it yet?

It seems Sheridan is destroying his Shadow ships by using tricks – not a straight up battle. At some point won’t he be one on one with a Shadow and have to deal with it?

At some point won’t Sheridan have to fight Earth? (I really don’t expect an answer to this one)

I’ve given up second guessing on this info — I feel very UN-imaginative when the stories unfold.

Good Job!

My company is working on a shared universe, which will allow anyone to use characters and backgrounds for their own stories.

We are going to use the Internet, so anyone can use our universe and freely share their stories. No payment needed. We will decide what is considered “official”- official stories are added to the background, and therefore become useable by anyone. Unofficial material is fine- it just doesnt get added to the Encyclopedia. It’s in the legal stuff- the mere act of using our material, or any material based on our material, places the user’s concepts in a limited public domain. As a result, we freely encourage people to use this common universe.

We don’t expect to make any money from this- we expect to make money from printed anthologies and from games based on this universe.

Why did I mention this? Our concept (which we doubt is original) encourages the free trading of ideas in a public forum. Nobody can steal it- nor can their ideas be stolen, since merely posting it makes it public domain. However, unless an author expressly states that someone can use their material, such use can comprise a violation of copyright and/or trademark, and as such is illegal, as well as being plagiarism.

Of course, I am NOT going: ” This idea is good, this idea I’ll keep, this idea is a bit out of my
depth intellectually, so I guess I’ll offer it to JMS, this idea is out of my range emotionally, so
I guess I’m gonna let MZB or Misty have it. ” And nobody said anything about condescending-
far from it: I was begging Misty to use my life as a basis for one of her characters. Frankly,
I don’t see the point of going through what I’ve gone through in my thirty something years if
my experiences are not being used by my mentors and friends to help other people. If that’s
assuming too much, then be it. You’ve got no idea of how many people JMS and Misty have
helped over the years by including abuse survivors, alcoholics and other ” dysfunctional ” types
among their characters!

Two solid questions I’ve been pretty curious about throughout the series:

1) Although the capital of the Earth Alliance (Earthdome) is located in Geneva, it seems to me the basic legislative structure is like the United States, albeit in a unicameral setting (I see only the Senate). Did you plan it this way, and have you ever thought about doing a historical article/presentation on Earth history until the Babylon 5 setting?

2) With six appendages for the males and six slots for the females, I kinda wonder if the Centauri are capable of multiple births on a regular basis. Care to comment on that?

Dear JMS,

In Dust To Dust I got the impression from G’Kar that he realized fighting the Centauri was
fighting the wrong enemey. He seemed to understand the Shadows were the greater threat.
My question is: If G’Kar no longer desires to wipe out the Centauri race, how will he go about convincing other Narn persons to put away their hatred and fight the greater enemy?

I find it impossible to think of how G’kar could sway these strong feelings. I know G’kar is
respected in many powerful Narn quarters but does he really have the power to sway the
most basic of emotions of an entrie species?

I’m also curious to know if G’kar using Dust even once has permanently altered his abilities.
Since Narns did have telepathic powers earlier, did Dust eradicate this blockage in G’Kar?

And last but not least, there simply are not enough words to say how much my husband and
I and our friends are addicted to your show and your storytelling talents. My hubby runs a BBs

JMS,

I know you have a billion details to cover every week, but when Sheridan took command of the White Star, he looked like he was going to a french disco, not into battle. The leather jacket was right, the style was very wrong! I reccomend a brown distressed leather Langlits Flight Jacket with cargo pockets and dress collar. (Langlits Custom Leathers, Portland, OR (503)235-0049.) They did the black jackets for Arnold in T2, and they just did a great flight Jacket for me. They make the best custom leather products on the planet. Sheridan could say it was a family Hairloom, that his great, great, great, great, grandfather wore it in WWII or something (and being a Langlits there would be no problem of it lasting four centuries, OK, a little exageration….) But It would give him a very serious, and traditional look, as oppossed to a babehound out for some drinks on the riviera!

Just trying to help…

“Was the “package” mentioned in Exo the blonde woman giving us the Mars Shadow info? Or was it the eggs and bacon? Or have we not seen it yet?

Yes, the package referred to Kirkish.

“It seems Sheridan is destroying his Shadow ships by using tricks – not a straight up battle. At some point won’t he be one on one with a Shadow and have to deal with it?”

Sooner or later. Right now he’s outgunned hideously. He’ll have to find a way.

“At some point won’t Sheridan have to fight Earth? (I really don’t expect an answer to this one)”

Stick around.

No multiple births, in that sense, not any different than humans.

Your analysis on the governmental situation is pretty accurate; the Senate in this case comprised of member nation/states, with smaller ones having less voice than the bigger ones (like the Russian Consortium, the North American Federation, and so on).

O.K., O.K., I’ll behave. ( Grin. ) Don’t turn to vapor. So, what CAN we discuss? Oh, I know-
I do have a ” safe ” question I’ve been meaning to ask. ( I just wanna make sure I word it right. )
Regarding G’Kar- what made you want to explore the dark side of victimization? I mean, it
would have been so much easier- and a lot more popular- just to go for your typical ” victim ”
character. What made you go the other way? I mean, weren’t you afraid that G’Kar beating
… out of Londo is gonna interfere with people feeling sympathy for G’Kar?

Your idea of Russian Jewish names is interesting. I knew a Russian Jew whose name (until Ellis Island) was Rysdidgnik–after EI it was Kendall.

Pardon me while I gush. You have the most wonderful, complex, devious and exciting mind of anyone working in TV. I love the “arc advancement” episodes. I delight in the character development episodes. And when everything goes together, Wow–Fireworks!

Thankyou for strong women who who are interesting enough that their clothes don’t have to fall off to make them interesting. Thankyou for the wonderfully wry Marcus who knows how to court such a woman (ye gads, that chart was splendid!) Thankyou for aliens who are more alien than the facial feature of the week.

Thankyou most of all for THINKING and for demanding thought of your audience. You have managed to bring off the classic epic struggle without resorting to the glib formulas.

Goodluck with your carpal tunnel syndrome. I understand your reluctance to go under the knife. I’m scheduled for surgery on the 29th (unfortunately not elective) and what upsets me most is that I’ll miss the next episode of B5! My friends, luckily, always tape it.

Thanks for so much great fun. Love–Cyn

Perhaps the most intriguing thing about B5 is an essential requirement ! That of orriginal thought! I see that in the show and also here on the board by all contributiors. Congratulations
to JMS for developing a show of this caliber! : )

P.S. I think Bester may be against the Shadows but that he an his faction of Psi Corps are comming at it from 180 degrees tothose on B5.

There’s already so much in the creative archives on the Web that I think he will get an absolute hoot over. But yes, what you said would be cool. That is if he decides to keep up with us after the series ends. (I don’t even want to think about it ending. It’s getting so good!) Ya never know maybe the fans can create an anthology of works for his reading pleasure!

We still have much time to think about it. Let’s enjoy what he’s got in store for us first.

Last night my husband had insomnia and asked me why I couldn’t be like Delenn; mumble something unintelligable and make it rain.

I told him to take Valium like normal people.

About twenty minutes later it started to rain. It was a cosmic experience.

My question, Great Maker: Did you do that? :^)
If so, do you got any ocean sounds?

In the opening narration for season 3, Ivanova says:
“Babylon 5 was our last best hope for peace, it failed.”
My question is as of ‘Messages from Earth’ has it
failed?

As of this point the Narn-Centauri war is over. Clark is
under investigation. The shadows have yet to attack.
Londo is trying to break away from the shadows. Obviously,
B5 is on the edge, but I don’t think they have failed as of
this point.

Would you agree that the point they admit failure has yet to
be aired? If not, at what point do you think they went over
the edge (aproximately)?

I’m new to this board and was thrilled to discover its existence. Please keep this show on the air–it’s the best writing in television. I don’t understand why it’s showing in the Atlanta/Athens area (TCI) at 1:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. Does this mean it’s about to be canceled? It deals with sensitive subjects like religion in a very straightforward, realistic way. I especially loved the “death penalty” episode. Even though I love Star Trek, you did a much better treatment of the subject than did Voyager in the episode with the same actor. Please don’t cancel this show–and please *do* move it to a better time so more people can see it! Unfortunately, it’s one of those shows that takes awhile to build up an audience–but I really have developed an affection for the characters. I *love* Boxleitner, but would like to see more of the first commander again, too.

…I have a hard time seeing Bester with redeeming qualities. If he actually has them, he hasn’t shown them yet….

JMS:
BTW, please tell Walter that his portrayal of this character has, IMHO, busted him out of that terrible stereotype he has suffered from for so many years!! :) :)

In my History class today, my professor was talking about the Ottoman empire using the male children of counquered territories as a source for their army members. He said that they were raised to be loyal to the Sultan. “The Sultan is Father; the Sultan is Mother” were his exact words. I was like, “Whoa” I don’t even think this guy has heard of Psi Corps and B5. It made me think though of Bester’s reasons for being such a jerk. Maybe there is hope for him.

I will not ever, nor hope anyone else ever does, post show ideas…..

Subj: JMS – A question

Hi,

First, I’d like to say that B5 is without a doubt the most thought-provoking and well produced show on television. As a longtime SF fan of all media, it’s great to see real effort being put into making a new show, rather than just another cops-and-robbers show, only set in space. I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Now for my question. Do you ever accept scripts or script proposals from free lance writers? I’m sure you’ve only heard this question about a thousand times, but if you could answer it just this one more time … if you’re concerned about privacy, my email is rzorich@aol.com … and don’t worry, I wouldn’t think of suggesting a story line without your explicit request (would absolutely hate to find out I screwed up a good story inadvertantly).

Thanks.

Messages From Earth’s effect on me after viewing: WHAK! Thud! This is one of your best this season. Major kudos to you and the crew. I’m curious though. Since shadow vessels have a living mind merged with them does this mean they don’t need a crew at all?

Keep up the fantastic work,
