So, when Londo refers to Babylon 5’s final commander in the pilot’s voiceover, should we take you just as literally? <grin>

Joe,
I watched B5 last night , and it was great!! It has NEVER disappointed me, incredible
writing(again!).
Although Ivanova is my favorite character, it was really wonderful to see Delenn out
there kicking some butt!!! She was so good in, ‘Severed Dreams’.
I can’t wait for next weeks installment(the Phoenix station ran a ‘Kung Fu’ promo
at the end of B5–so I have no idea what next week is!!).
Kudos!!!

Does the poster at the end of “Severed Dreams” have anything to do with Ivanova’s appearance in Sheridan’s dream/ vision in “All Alone in the Night”?!

Hmmmm….I’m not really sure I want to know the answer to this….

In comment of “SD”… WUUUH! (Excuse me, I am still recovering. I think my voice finally came back.) I was duly floored & delighted. EXCELLENT episode. Mira, as ever, was stunningly superb! One part of the music struck me – where the firefight is going on between the hull breachers & security team. It seemed to have an etherial feel – like going in the slow motion that it was. Brilliant! Kudos, Christopher Franke! (hint for new soundtrack.)

Now… to the question re: The Grey Council & Dukat (sp?) Why was the Grey Council always to be found on a cruiser? Were they ever located on Minbar itself? Or was the cruiser orbiting Minbar? Was it for their protection, or secrecy? Or has this already been answered? Did ALL of the Grey Council eventually follow Delenn, or were there some who did not join in the fight?

Finally… We found out that Dukat died in Delenn’s arms, & that she said he had chosen her to be his replacement on the council. We already knew that she turned down the position of leader of the council, but the question lies in: What was Delenn’s relationship to Dukat? Will we be finding out more about this? Would love to get a peek at Minbar!

The fact that we the fans are forever asking questions about the series proves that you have provided us w/a show that poses and answers many questions, making us think about the possibilities.

Thank you again, so very much, for sharing your incredible show w/us, as well as taking the time to answer our questions.

Many congratulations and “great job!” to all the staff, cast & crew! Looking forward to the new episodes!

JMS

Just got back from MiniCon. The place was full of Babylon 5 fans and all were raving about Severed Dreams. On Friday, we hosted a Babylon 5 party and showed the episode in our room to a SRO crowd. During the party topics of conversation ranged from the latest episode events to the possible death of principal characters during the remainder of this season to rumors that the show has been renewed for a fourth season. On Sunday one of the convention attendees brought along two copies of the newest episode hot off the satellite feed. The episode was shown atleast three times to huge crowds. Another great episode.

During the events of the latest episode and during prior ones, I have kept wondering why only the EarthForce characters wear a Comlink. Now that Shadow War has begun wouldn’t it be a good idea to provide characters like Delenn, Lennier, G’kar and Marcus with Comlinks so that they can contact others in case of emergencies.

By the way, cool new uniforms.

With the latest developments in the “Severed Dreams” episode, who will be the sponsor of Babylon 5. The Minbari seem to be the obvious choice, but does Delenn really have enough resources to support a five-mile long space station. In addition, who will protect Babylon 5. Earth will most definetely try to reclaim it. Does that mean that there will always need to be a Minbari cruiser somewhere in the vicinity in the station. Or will Draal become the official protector of B5. Any thoughts? Drop me a line.

Is there any chance that the B5 storyline will continue after the initial 5 years….Under a different name perhaps (Babylon 4, The Shadow War….) It seems to good to last only 5 years. Also, JMS said that he’ll probably go back to writing novels after B5. Any B5 novels we can expect before the turn of the century.

Realized about 2 hours after posting question about Sinclair being on the bridge with Delenn
that it was Sheridan that survived the battle, and that Delenn was refering to her position
between the EA crusiers and B5.

to JMS,
Mira was excellent in this ep. unbeliveably strong performance.
What about Bruce McGill?? As he was Gen. Hague’s exec. aide he would have been privy to
the same info as Hague. Will he be the new leader of the resistance as it were and take up

Delenn said that the Worker caste and the Religious caste made up 2/3 of the forces. The other
third comes from the Warrior caste. If the Warrior caste won’t assist, she implies, then the other
two castes will take care of the problem. She was speaking to the Warrior caste with contempt
because they felt the “problems of others do not concern us” .

I just sent out my ratings vote on Severed Dreams. I

had almost everything; excellent CGI, action, human interaction
and some well written eloquies. You have raised the standard
and I can’t wait for you to break it. I’m using a tape of SD to
hook more viewers.

is done. DS9 and VOY could use the help)

Hello everyone!
I’ve been lurking the past few weeks, but just had to add my two cents to these comments.
“Severed Dreams” was great. The space battle was well done. However, that’s not what got me. It was the little things: Sheridan’s call to his father..Delenn coming to the rescue..Ivanova asking Corwin if he was ok…G’kar’s assistance…Capt. Hiroshi’s ‘kamikaze’ act…and of course the kiss on the hand (sigh……)
Those parts of the episode kept me glued to the sofa.
I do have two questions:
Why did the Narn just run into the line of fire in Brown sector? I would think they’d come in low and get a few shots in.
My boyfriend noticed that the Churchill’s captain has the same name as the senator that helped Sinclair at the beginning of the series. Coincidence?

I was pondering what you were pondering and it occurred to me (after having watched Severed
Dreams) that perhaps the Shadows have subsumed the Minbari Warrior caste. If they are so
against fighting other people’s battles, perhaps it is because they feel they can use an alliance
with the Shadows to win back what they gave up in the Earth/Minbari War. Just a thought!

JMS-

I’m just making a wild and wacky attempt at understanding your story planning technique. In Messages from Earth, Sheridan tells Delenn a stroy about his father making it rain so he could get to sleep. Was this put in deliberately to get us thinking about his father; and to make a connection to Severed Dreams, when we actually see him? Kind of a more toned down version of your “show the gun in Act One, fire it in Act Three” theory?

No way! Minbar didn’t give up **anything** when they surrendered. They just went home. If Neroon (if he actually is involved) and the other Warriors (**save one**) made their deal with the Shadows, it’s simply to keep the Minbari out of the way.

Now that the Grey Council is broken, to heck with the Warrior Caste! Those who wish to fight may fight!

Are you talking about the Grey Council scene with that “save one” part? Because all four Warior cast council members stayed behind in the chamber. You weren’t able to “see” them all in the shot, but only five of the nine walked out with Delenn.

Joe – Simple question (I hope) on Severed Dreams. How did Delenn know that the station was under attack and that she needed to bring re-inforcements? She left before the Churchill arrived and therefore didn’t know the EA ships were due soon. Also, how far is the jump to Minbar (I presume that’s where the Grey Council was)? It seemed like she left and was back with ships in about 6 to 10 hours (kinda of fast I thought). I’m not trying to nitpick, just curious. Great show, I’ve been introducing it to everyone I know (including a few die hard Trekkers in the process).

Dear JMS, Cast and Crew:
Let me begin by repeating what you have already read here numerous times, but bears repeating. Congratulations to you, the cast and the crew for an excellent piece of work. The dedication, perserverance and talent of everyone involved was evident. It is a pleasure to feel like a participant when watching B5, you have captured the same feeling that one gets when you read a great book.

I was particularly impressed with the interplay between Sheridan and his father. The acting and the writing were superb, not only for what was said, but what wasn’t said, yet understood by father and son. Well done.

Again, Congratulations and much thanks. Keep up the great work

If your local station keeps moving B5 around, try calling the station and politely asking (each week if needed) when B5 will be on this week. This serves 2 purposes:
You find out when the show is on
You communicate to the station that you are interested enough in the show to actively find it. If many others do this, the station learns of the strong following and *may* change.

Also, while you have them on the phone, get the name of the station manager and the station’s address and write a brief letter in support of the show. Keep it polite…

1. I think one of the most interesting fx in the show is the PPG discharges; the way the heat (I guess that’s what it is) disrupts the air. I also noticed that the charges don’t tend to hold a straight line; this is also a very interesting touch since they’re obviously designed for medium to close quarters. Do they dissipate (and is it therefore possible to step out of the way as with early musket balls?)?

2. I thought the fact that the EA pilot bombing Mars was faceless was a nice touch–very creepy.

3. It was very interesting how quickly Corwin switched to calling the opposing Starfuries “the enemy”. Would this be standard practice in this type of situation, or has he been thinking on his own about the situation? I still love this character for his innocence, which I believe he will retain no matter what. I am not entirely sure he knows what he’s in for–yet. Keep him in there!

4. Wow.

Lots of worthy info (especially the March issue, with its 2nd season episode guide.) No, I don’t believe so. You’ve seen a jump GATE used, but that’s different from a jump POINT which basically closes right behind the ship like a rabbit pulling its hole in after it. If the ships stayed behind to protect its rear, they’d be left behind. Ships coming out of a jump point into normal space sometimes will let their fighters zip out AS they’re coming out, alongside the main ship.

She already knew that civil war had broken out between EA ships and forces, and that B5 had already faced one takeover bid, and that whether or not it happened today or the next day, it was definitely coming. That was unmistakeable. Also, bear in mind that Lennier stayed behind. She would have checked in with him en route and found out what was going on, or picked up the radio broadcasts of the battle in progress. Jms,

Also there is one sequence in SD where furies fire on the Churchill, then the next shot is of Maj. Ryan and his XO being jolted. Then the Churchill is destroyed … and they are still there at the end of the battle. However, all this is petty compared to the level of insight you give us into the motivations and ideals behind the principled resistance.

The difficult thing now will be maintaining order on B5 without any external authority. I assume Sheridan will continue to uphold the general principles of the EA constitution, but what will happen to the common law onboard the station? Some interesting paralells and disconinuities between the wartime South there, I would imagine.

I *LOVE* this show!

I have a thought that I hope either you or some other fans will respond to:

Jack (“Comes the Inquisitior”) asks “Who are you?”

It seems to me (based upon the “Inquisitor” ep.) that the question was never verbally answered, however, the act of willingly and knowingly giving up one’s life to save another (or many others) provided the answer Jack was looking for, and as such ended his apparently lengthy search.

It also makes me think of the original, and perhaps completely, and at least partially unknown grounds for the Minbari’s relationship with Sheridan. Upon committing to his Kamikazee mission, he in fact was willingly and knowingly giving up his life for the sake of others.

Is this not what Jesus did? Give his life so that we may have ours.

Not to sound to Lennonish, but imagine a universe where this is the norm. Is this what Kosh is trying to create?, Universal Peace.

Forgive me if this is a tired subject, I am new to AOL and have not completeley explored all the B5 postings yet.

P.S. My most sincere congratulations and thanks for creating by far the most intelligent dramatic T.V. on the air!!!!

JMS – I just had three quick questions/comments for you.

1. I just watched “Severed Dreams” with some of my friends and everyone was completely blown away. We all love this show!!! That episode had the most tension out of all that I’ve seen.

2. I noticed that the same actor who plays Morden, was in the command center on the pilot ep. The same actor playing a different role, or Morden before he ran into the Shadows???

3. You’ve said that WB doesn’t think releasing B5 to video would have any support. Do you have a name and address of someone that we can write to at WB to prove them wrong?

Thanks a lot!

1) **Did** all the Warriors stay behind?? That one member tugged on the last Grey leaving, as if to say, “but you are one of us! You too?”
2) Though it seems G’Kar is now “in”, so to speak, last I saw, Sheridan said he’d “consider” bringing him in. Sure it’s implied, but is Sheridan going to tell him for real, “Yes, G’Kar, your actions over the past few hours have ensured your total loyalty. And your fears and warnings were correct. You’re in.”
He should.

It goes without saying that I am terribly unamused . . .

What I seek is someone in the LA area (preferably South Bay) that taped the show, so that I can either borrow it or buy a dubbed copy. I would be eternally grateful to any who can assist me in this quest (if only to guide me to more appropriate place to post this)

Dear JMS,
SD was one of the best single hours of SF TV I have ever seen. I thought that the transfer ships which carried the Marines to B5 were one of the most inovative ships I have seen. I have one question though. Since they came through the outer shell of B5, they should have come in down below “Down Below” (ground level), and through the floor. But instead they cut through a side wall. Am I right in assuming that B5 security must have shut the security doors to try to stop the marines? Also, why didn’t Garibaldi gas the sector which the marines entered (they weren’t wearing masks, and I thought B5 was able to compensate for the atmospheres of the NAW and the Big 5.)

The marines in the transfer ship (I forgot the type of ship it was), seem to have compensated for the “gravity” of “down below”, which means that the ship must be accelerating at 9.8 m/s/s (or whichever is the apparent ‘g’ which exists in “down below”) as it approaches B5. It must also be revolving around B5 at the same radial velocity that B5 rotates, in order to grapple with B5 at a particular point, without falling off the surface. Its a wonder the soldiers were able to have their “space legs” when they entered B5 (did you ever read The_Moon_is_a_Harsh_Mistress after the Luna revolution took place?)!!! Great series; can’t wait for the second half. 😉

WOW!! GREAT!! MORE!!! MORE!!!! MORE!!!
“Severed Dreams” was just about the best thing I’ve ever seen. As much as I hate commercials they probably saved my life by giving me a break in the action otherwise my heart might have exploded. This show was so exciting, beautiful, dark, energized, thrilling, hopeful, enticing and fantastic. What more can be said except that I’ve been spoiled for any other SF show.
My only question is what was Ivanova doing staring at the Churchill when she was in the middle of a battle. She put herself at such a great disadvantage that she almost got herself killed.
As for Delenn, wow, she showed her strength and courage when she faced the Grey Council. Her face when she brought in the reinforcements was marvalous, as was Sheridan’s when he saw the jump gates open efore she returned.
How did Ivanova get hurt?
Last question. How was Garabaldi hurt, I know during the fighting but whet part of the body?

That’s all for now, unless someone can send me a tape of the show.

Thanks

Posted on: America Online

Dear JMS,
This is actually a pet peeve I have with all SciFi TV and movies. From Star Wars to Trek to B5 even, very rarely do I ever see objects moving in the three dimensions in space. Ships always seem to fly as if there is something below and a horizon that keeps everything aligned and oriented. Whenever ships approach, they always seem to come towards each other head on and never askewed from each other. An example in Severed Dreams, when Delenn came out of hyperspace, her ships were between the Earth Forces and B5, and they were oriented in the same direction (with tops pointed up.) They defending the station, so the first point is understandable; but in 3-D with no gravity, there is no need for ships to be oriented like this.

Also, in many of the jump point scenes, if there are more than two or three JPs formed, they are always in the same plane (or their declination is not to far off from each other).

It would be tragic if admirals and captains in the EA and the other four powers truly thought in this two dimensional mentality, which works fine on the battlefield or in the sky (remember the words of Ender Wiggin – “The enemy’s gate is down”). The Shadows have had millions of years of experience in space, and I’d be a little concerned about their concept of spacial orientation. I suspect, however, that this is an oversight friom the FX people, who otherwise do an excellent job. I think it would be mind blowing to see ships moving in all directions. I’d like to see this explored in future episodes, or hopefully your FX people become more innovative in their concepts in three dimensional thinking. Yours sincerely – Khun David

In the SD episode, I noticed that when the jump point is activated by B5, it is yellow in color and when a ship enters B5 space the jump point is blue. What is the reason for this? Also in that episode, how did the EA ships after they met with the 3 Minbari ships and the White Star, form a jump point with out using the gate? As far as I know, the EA ships do not have that capabilities or do they? If they do, when did they obtain the knowledge and from whom, the information was not shown in any of the episodes I ever saw.

As a long time fan I wish to offer both my congratulations and thanks for the recent episode “Severed Dreams.” If this most extraordinary chapter in the B5 saga is any indication of what lies ahead in the second half of the shows five year run then we all in for a wild ride.

Questions.
#1. I have what I think is a good story, or perhaps subplot, suggestion. I am not a screenwriter and have no aspirations to be one. As a fan with a fertile imagination is there any way I can send an idea to you and relinquish all future rights?

#2. (and 1/2) question. Are the “bones” on the Minbaris heads part of their skulls or are they headwear of some kind. If they are biological formations is Delenn’s also permanent or is it worn out of respect for her heritage?

Again thank you.

I do agree with the idea that, in a microgravity environment (the space around B5), ships would not necessarily be oriented on the same plane. However, doing this avoids a lot of confusion that might detract from bringing new viewers in. It is done very well on occasion (White Star vs. Shadows – my stomach actually flipped), and it would be a very good way to emphasize the alieness of the Shadows and the Vorlons. To my knowledge, no movie/TV series has made consistent use of full 3D orientation. B5, however uses quite a bit – watch the fighter manuvers in detail (lots of rewinding), and you’ll see what I mean. Also, in a fighter cockpit scene, watch what’s going on OUTSIDE of the craft – this will give you a taste of what is happening.
Note: in the beginning of SD, MAJ Ryan’s XO says “fire in the hole” before giving the command to fire on the Clarkeston (?) – the starfuries _scatter_…
JMS: MAJ Ryan’s XO mentioned the Clarkeston’s screens being down. Nature of these defenses? Effective against which weapons? We are gaming all this out, you know. Full Thrust is a wonderful simple rules set for space battles, easily adapted to the B5 universe. Thanks to your imagination and drive, we’re having a blast (literally)!

It’s 2 days to Earth from B5 via hyperspace, and 25 light years. This would correspond to an average of 12.5 ly/day. I suspect that it isnt entirely linear, in that farther distances can be reached in proportionately less time. Also, I suspect that number might have been for faster ships, like the white star, and that civilian ships would take longer.

It could be that the Centauri were otherwise occupied with the Narn, and couldn’t spare the force to conquer Earth.

I was also given the impression that Earth was substantially more advanced when the Centauri met them than the Narns were- the Narns were more advanced during the Earth/Minbari war only as a result of stolen Centauri technology.

In other words, the Earth had more homegrown technology upon meeting the Centauri- enough so that it would have taken a lot more effort than it was worth to conquer us. Easier to corrupt us from within.

Thanks for a great show. When I was working for a local insurance company, we used to have B5 talk sessions every Monday. They were great.

How can we get some of the cast to appear at a con in this area?

well I for one applaud you!!! It’s about time that a writer took the risk of doing something new and different and risky, not just what is popular and convenient. This is what makes new and exciting programming, such as b5. I think your show will go a long way to redefining how science fiction television is written. I think the days of 1hour plots week to week are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

Now on a completely different suject…. <I’ll do it all in one post>

I live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and can not find your show on ANY of the local stations… Thank God for satelite wild feeds or I wouldn’t be able to see the show at all… Is there some way that you can possible get at least ONE station in this market to pick up the show, or investigate why it is not here. I talk to many people online on the local bbs’ and they do not know about b5 and the wonderful things that you have done, (they are still thinking about the first season!) because they can not get the show…. please see what you can do… maybe it’s just a factor of me not knowing where and when the show is aired…

We LOVE this episode. We really enjoyed Marcus! He’s really starting to really fill out as a character. However, I was a little disappointed that he didn’t participate in the ceremony at the end – especially after Delenn asked him and spoke to him about it. It makes us wonder what secret he’s unready to reveal.

The relevations were juicy!! I have been reading a lot in the chat room about Ivanova and Talia, but didn’t believe it. When I discussed it with my friends, they thought the people in the chat room were crazy. I guess not.

My question is why Delenn didn’t tell us what she is giving up or her secret.

Keep up the great writing!!!

Another solid link in the chain!! WHose uniforms were the one’s rec’d from Delenn: ranger uniforms, uniforms of some other planet, custom made B5 suits, or what?

The rebirth concept is keeping the talk going at the school where I teach.

Was Ivanova ashamed of her secret, or was she glad to have it out in the open?

Keep us thinking.

User661472- not quite. In Wrath of Khan, Kirk dropped below, then came up behind so that they were one again in the same plane and fired. In All Good Things…, Riker simply fired from below without bothering to maneuver to the same plane. So even though Spock mentioned 2-dimensional thinking, Kirk was still thinking along those lines too.

Still, a lot of what we see on Babylon 5 does show a bit of 2-D thinking.

They use many of the same characters on the show.
1. The old Drall is brother Theo.
2. The Drazi leader was a Markab leader and even a Narin guard checking Londo’s identity cards recently.
3. The Soul hunter was also G’kar uncle who was killed by the shadows durring the Centauri war in “The long twilight struggle”

I love your show but durring the battle with Earth Force:

1. Sheridan was calling the “Agrippa” the “Roanoke” when he ordered the station defence guns to fire and when he ordered them to surrender. The Roanoke was destroyed when the Churchill ramed her earlier. He had the ships mixed up and was asking a destroyed ship to surrender. The Agrippa ended up destructing anyway but it was a little confusing when he verbally asked an already destroyed ship to surrender while we watched the visually implied Agrippa burn out.

Also there would be survivers on the warships protected by bulkheads. I can’t understand the apparent lack of bulkheads on Earth ships. Fire control is almost too easy when you can blow a hatch into space. Only in an atmosphere are continued fires going to take place???

Also the hand to hand fighting that took place was terrible. Not that I don’t like a good brawl, but why would I use a rifle butt when I could easily kill with the other end that fires a PPG? Romantic memories of the WWI trench warfare while making the Narin look darring fighting an offensive battle showing their willingness to die for others. If they are going to die out with honor they shouldn’t look like willing idiot cannon fodder. (excuse the wording it has been one of those days)

The BOARDING POD this would be the last thing you would see. After the defences were gone, then the super vulnerable Boarding Pod would be implemented. It just makes to easy a target before hand durring combat.

Sheridan made a grave GRAVE error not using Drall’s defence system to save Earth force personnal and equipment. He talked the usual about wanting to avoiding a battle “The orders are illegal and not Constitutional Bla Bla” and “not wanting to fight but finish the fight”. Those were People(EARTH’s People) on the other ships and aboard the Churchill and all the fighters lost. Drall could have acted independently and told the agressive ships to leave this is neutral territory. They attack and Drall immediately drops the Agrippa. Then the three remaining ships would leave and all is well, precidence is set. (The minimum amount of life and war equipment for earth is lost (THEY EVEN KNEW THE PEOPLE THEY WERE FIGHTING BY NAME how civil warish) Clark won’t be in power forever and Earth will be much more vulnerable without those warships and fine solders who died because Sherridan wouldn’t use his facilities. Bad call and everybody looses. Now Clark can claim it’s the Minbari who destroyed those ships and is behind the rebellion.

I love your show and I’m glad there is a place to get these thing off my chest.

Long live B5

I think things are going well in Indianapolis for B5 now. After being cancelled on WTTV, it was picked up by WNDY. WNDY originally was showing it on Sunday nights at 11:00pm, but they have moved it to Saturdays at 10:30pm. Since more people are likely to be up at that hour, I think it was a great move. In addition, WNDY is showing the lottery drawings at 11:00pm, during a commercial break. People will be watching B5 to see the drawings!

Show support for B5 by writing polite, supportive letters to your local stations! And get everybody you know to to the same!

I can understand the excitement after each episode, and the desire to wax enthusiastic to jms, who deserves every word, but I would like to ask folks, especially the ones with satellite dishes, to *please* try to stay general in your worship for a week or so while the rest of us have a chance to be pleasantly surprised – don’t give anything away (and I’ll watch that myself). Though we may have fun guessing – that’s part of the enticement of B5, to see if we were right or to be blown away by a shocker – not all of us want to know the truth ahead of time about where the arc is going or what happens on this week’s episode and beyond (even small details can be clues). I think the live chat rooms are more suitable for that. Otherwise, this particular board will not be a safe place to be for those of us who want to find out from the show itself, yet still be able to visit jms here; that would be a shame. Can we arrive at some kind of understood protocol about this, to at least “wait until the polls close” where juicy details about a current week’s episode are concerned? Thanks.

Sheridan would have let Drall help, but the minute he did, Earth, Clark and the Shadows would know that he exists. As far as I understand from his comment during SD, he wants to keep them a secret as long as possible. At the end of SD, I really think it crossed his mind to let Drall help, but Delenn saved the day. I do not think Sheridan would let anything happen to B5.

Delenn and Sheridan, there is a couple????? Is it possible, what does anyone think or am I crazy?

<<Sheridan would have let Drall help, but the minute he did, Earth, Clark and the Shadows would know that he exists.>>

Actually, they already know he exists from the events in “A Voice in the Widerness” parts 1 & 2. They know that he’s the one in control of the great machine in the planet, and they know that he’s warned eveyone to stay away from the planet because it was being preserved for the future.

What they don’t know (and so far nobody else knows – including the Shadows) is that Draal has formed an alliance with the Army of Light. That’s what they need to keep secret for now, because otherwise it would tip the Shadows off to the fact that an opposition to them is organizing. This could prompt them to attack now, before we’re ready for them.

You have established via the show and message boards that Duhkat was killed, died in Delann’s arms speaking to her. This started the Earth/Minbari War. And soul hunters tried to get to him but he was surrounded by Minbari (I think this piece came from S1 “Soul Hunter”).

Are you planning on showing this scene (as a flashback presumably) at all? I think it would be pretty powerful scene (unfortunately I don’t know if this would be meaningful to the story).

With my luck this scene is either meaningless to the storey or coming up in the next new episode, thus making this post rather meaningless. That’s just the way my luck runs.

Not only were the battle scenes (i can’t hink of a good enough word) great, but the comments people are making are about Delenn, Sheridan, Ivanova et al. This is what makes B-5 so special; that we are watching fascinating characters (first) in a fascinating adventure. Only by caring for the characters will be care about the rest of the story. Frankly, I stood up and yelled HERE COMES THE LIGHT BRIGADE!!! when Delenn and the Minbari arrived. Only because of the exellent writing, perfomances and production values intsilled in B-5 was that re-action caused. I don’t have a question, but I just had echo everyone else. A better written TV series has not been produced. I used to say a better science fiction series had not been produced, but Severed Dreams was a pinnacle in TV history. On that three-episode mini-arc, I have a sneaking suspicion…

I get the feeling that Sheridan’s actions at Ganeymede and Jupiter may well have forced Clark’s hand in grabbing more fully for power — after all, when he declared martial law, all hell broke loose, whereas an intricately crafted plan would have probably caused a lot less uproar. The Nazis didn’t cause that much ruckus when they seized power, after all — it was only when they were firmly in the driver’s seat that they started shaking things up.

So it seems Clark moved before he was ready, and it was kind of implied that the actions of the White Star against the loco Shadow ship may have been the trigger for that.

Dumb luck working in favor of the Conspiracy of Light? Or maybe something deeper at work? Because either way, Clark should have waited, maybe another six months to a year, to get all his ducks in a row. Instead, there’s civil war, EarthForce’s divided, and the colonies are breaking away.

On the other hand, that tends to work in the Shadows’ favor.

Forgive me; it’s been a long day. So how far off the mark is the analysis above? Anybody?

JMS;

This has not got much to do with plot or such… I watch Babylon 5 every week and all I can say is that they keep getting better. I will tell you honestly that my mom and I wait impaiently(sp?) each week for the next episode (even if it is a repeat), and I read the books also.

I am writing this because I can’t think of any other way to get the problem corrected. The last 5 NEW episodes of B5 have had closed captioning problems. The captions are running together and words are being spliced together so much that it is impossible to follow what is going on at all. I watch B5 on UPN 9 in New York City, And I haven’t been able to get them to say the problem is theirs. I do watch other shows on UPN 9 and there is no captioning problem on them…it seems to be only B5. I am not deaf but I have friends who are and they are becomming very frustrated with not being able to follow the action. If you ever tried to watch a show while signing to a deaf person (who is also tring to watch you and the show at the same time) you would understand my delema.

I was just hoping you could let the “right” people know that there was a problem and get it corrected (maybe?). The shows before the recient ones (including repeats) are for the most part, fine. Sorry to bother you with this but the hard of hearing and deaf enjoy the show also.

Thanks again for a show that really keeps the blood racing.

Don’t forget that the “recording” Ivanova got while in Draal’s “machine” on the planet below was causing serious problems for Clark. In order to deflect the pressure caused by the “recording” Clark had to do something. By calling the “recording” a slanderous lie made up by some treasonous (is that a word?) citizen, he scared the public enough into believing that martial law was the best thing for everyone. Remember, the Major in SD said that Clark had been placing his own people in strategic posts for a year. If Clark could do that, I’m sure he was planning to wait before taking full control of EarthGov, but the “recording” made that impossible.

Actors, as I understood JMS explain it, are signed to a contract with an option available to the producers every year. For instance, if a certain character will no longer be needed for the show (due to death, contract disputes, etc.), the producers would simply not pick up that actor’s contract for the upcoming season. So whether a regular actor has a contract or not might not play into them dying as much as one might think (if this is wrong JMS, please correct me.)

JMS thanks again for another great episode. I get more and more hooked with each week. If the powers that be can retain some of the junk on TV these days – I surely hope that they can see their way clear to keeping a show with this kind of quality. I also enjoy the humor and the historical references. If they can find room for “the world’s funniest home videos”, surely they can find a spot for B5.

<<The Shadows already know that he exists and that Ivanova was using it durring “Voices of Authority”. She said “They know my name” refering to the shadows. This card was far from hidden in Sherridan’s deck and he chose to let people die needlessly instead. >>

Of course they know the machine exists and Drall is the custodian, but we’ve been shown no proof so far that the Shadows know that Drall let Ivanova use the machine. Yes, she said that “They know my name”, so they know WHO she is but she didn’t say that they knew how she was projecting her mind out there.

What the Shadows DO know is that Drall has warned everyone away from the surface of the planet. He has said that the machine was being kept for the future when it would be needed. As far as the Shadows know, that still hasn’t changed. This is all the Earth government knows at this point too.

If it were to become common knowlege that Drall had now formed an alliance with Sheridan, Delenn and the Rangers this would set off alarm bells with the Shadows. They would know at that point that this alliance was being formed to fight them, and this might prompt them to attack right now before we’re ready for them. This was the whole reason they have to keep this a secret. It was the same reason that Sheridan had to let Morden go last season. The Shadows lost the last war because they moved too fast, this time they’re taking their time and being patient. They feel they have this luxury because they’re still largely unknown. Most people who do know about them are in league with them. And the ones that aren’t are for the most part being ignored (like G’Kar). But if this changes it would prompt them to move.

So Sheridan HAD to keep that card hidden. He would only call on Drall for help if there was no other way. He didn’t choose to let people die needlessly – THEY were the ones who chose to attack the station with deadly force. He had a much bigger picture to worry about.

A question about the rebirth ceremony – wasn’t there a rebirth ceremony given way back on “Parliment of Dreams”.
As I recall, Sinclair, Londo and G’Kar were all there, but I don’t think there was anything about revealing a secret or giving something you greatly value away – they just sat and watched the ceremonies.

Maybe that was the tourist version? – :)

Anyway I love B5 – it’s the only TV show I that have to watch every week!

I just moved here from NY and also hated the closed captioning problems. I like to keep it on, and then follow the action. I have found that a lot of times dialogue that is on the screen is NOT on the the final edit.. Or vice versa..

I think, tho I am not sure, that the script is sent to be captioned, and then last minute changes occur…

Is this the case? Because in this way we get to ‘read’ the original script before it is edited.
JMS, if you read this, could you comment on the closed captioning theory I made above?

Who were the major players when the united earth government was formed, the Earthdome Senate set up etc. Russian military tradition is vastly different from US military tradition in terms of politics. It would help to have a little more background on the makeup of Earthdome before launching into political discusssions re: what Earthdome was or wasn’t likely to do. Earthdome always looked very US based, but the Army is acting a lot more Russian based.

Many shows get stuck in the 2-D, wet navy line of thinking because it’s hard to get out of. Starships either act like wet navy battleships, or like air-breathing fighters – because that’s all we know and are familiar with. Modern (B5 era – 2260) 3D space combat tactics are something we haven’t had to come up with yet. All modern space combat consists of is sats jockeying for position with limited fuel sources, ground launched ASATs (fewer than 10 sites, not including plane-launched), and Stupid Shuttle Tricks (Is that a killersat or a weather sat? _You_ EVA & find out). But B5 has touched on one aspect of modern (1996) and future (2260) space combat close to my heart –
Engagements Beyond Visual Range (EBVR).
A shining example is the Narn-Shadow ambush (DK the ep, sorry). The Narns jump insystem and the Shadows are waiting for them. The “camera angles” showed that the Shadows were on one side of the planet and the Narns were on the other. The Narn heavy beam weapons fired off into infinity, and in the next scene, they hit a Shadow ship. Of course, after the Narns fired their mines and the Sadows disgorged their fighter balls, the engagement was within visual range. Of course, by this point, the Narns were dead, or were and they didn’t know it yet.
Once again, the likely reasons for this are A) we don’t think that way much (at least most don’t) and B) it looks a lot neater to have the ships closer, pounding away within a fighter furball (example, Severed Dreams). From an esthetic point of view, B is a perfectly acceptable fudge; keep up the good work. From a realistic point of view, space combat would be a bridge crew staring into tactical displays, hoping to get a trace of the enemy, and a firing solution before they do. They would never see the enemy. It would probably look very much like the Combat Information Center of, say, a Ticonderoga-class missile cruiser. Space combat promises to be tense, but not very visually pleasing.

B5, however, is extremely visually pleasing. We should accept the idiosyncracies for what they are, and appreciate the wonderful CGI and technical work.
B5 – land of the Z-axis and EBVR, long may it reign.

I like seeing the characters picking up the pieces and starting to move forward in some manner.

On a slightly different note, when you film two people talking via the wall comm screens, do they see and hear each other as they act out the scene or do you film the different sides of the conversations seperately? For example, in SD did you film Sheridan’s dad first and play the tape for Sheridan to act to?

for some time Delenn has been talking about going into the fire and darkness. Up to now, I’ve thought of that fire as the war, but now I suspect another interpretation that Delenn may need to face. the fire of passion.

In Initiation, by Elisabeth Haich, even those who live a life dedicated to spirituality or something greater than themselves, must eventually face and surrender to, passion, which is as transforming as war.

This was the first time I can recall seeing Bill Mumy (Lennier) actually start to lose his cool.

Why didn’t Delenn also reveal a secret as part of the Ceremony?? Or does the person hosting the Ceremony not actually participate, but only direct (so to speak)?? Thought that she was going to tell Sheridan that his feelings were mutual (at least her eyes said that).

In Clarks Law, her name is J’Ntiel, and she and G’kar are on very good terms. Considering the rather short time gap between the two books and G’kar’s personality, it seems rather improbable that he got divorced and remarried between books. I realize you didn’t write either book, but since the books are part of the story arc, I was wondering if you could clarify the situation. Thanks.

Marcus’ whole colony was destroyed by the shadows? (presumably early 2259 at the latest, when no one really knew about them?) Which colony was this? There must have been an “official” version of what happened to it; was this one of the things the reporter “hadn’t been allowed to report”? The whole bit with Marcus and his brother, etc confuses me… together with the baddies on earth, it seems increasingly like B5 was the last, not the first, to know about the Shadows’ return.

1) Seriously, will earth be sending an ambassador? Surely they don’t want Sheridan speaking for them anymore. Has B5’s role as a “united nations/neutral territory” officially ended? If so, why’s Londo hanging around? I can’t see earth being the only major (or minor) power going unrepresented.
2) Will the rest of the C&C staff be getting new uniforms? And security? Can’t quite see the Narns in anything else – judging by Poppa hanging on the tree I gather they shoulder pad their outfits to look more formidable.

<<How else could she have projected herself out there and how would she have known were the ancient ones lived/once lived.>>

Well, who’s to say the Vorlon’s couldn’t have been behind it? The bottom line is they didn’t *know*. And if they did guess, that ALONE is not proof that the Machine has been allied with Babylon 5 for the purpose of defeating the Shadows. It just means that a human has used the machine. For what purpose, or in exchange for what they don’t know.

And as to how else could she have found the place – she’s not exactly the first human to go searching for it, or Narn for that matter. Catherine Sakai went there in the first season and was rescued by a couple of Narn fighters. G’Kar had tried to warn her not to because he was well aware of the place. It’s potentially a very valuable planet because of its Quantium 40 deposits.

<<Sherridan was willing to use Dralls holographic device (a device well advanced of our own and only previously publicly used by Drall)(… the resident shadows on the station would know how that was done and thus make the connection with Drall).>>

Why would they automatically make the connection to Drall? You’re right that the holographic projection was beyond the capabilities of the station’s equipment, but the Minbari are a thousand years more advanced than we are and Delenn is known to be an ally of Sheridan. Who’s to say that the holographic projection wasn’t from a Minbari projector? We’ve already seen some pretty advanced holographics on the Minbari war cruisers (and the White Star).

<<Also, Drall did not have to take sides in the conflict, all he had to do was state that any agressive ship would have been destroyed and that this space would remain neutral under Dralls athority.>>

You call this not taking sides? Come on. Previously all Drall cared about was making sure people knew enough to stay away from the planets surface. Protecting Babylon 5 is a complete break with precedent. Varn never offered offered protection when the station was being threatened by Vorlons (in the pilot), when the raiders where attacking, or when the non-aligned worlds were threatening to attack (in “Deathwalker”). And Drall didn’t help defend when it appeared the Trigati was attacking, or when the Centauri ship threatened to attack if we tried to break its blockade (“and Now for a Word”), or when the other Centauri ship DID attack the station. He also didn’t do anything to get rid of that berzerker probe for us. He only blasted away at the ships from Varn’s people when they tried to move in on the planet. He’s never acted to prevent forces from fighting or attacking the station in the past.

Now, you think he can suddenly expand his “exclusion zone” to include the station and say with a straight face that he’s not really taking sides. No, this would be clearly taking sides. It’s a major change in policy.

<<Sheridan made a bad call not using his facilities to save lives.
The comander of the Alexander only reluctantly destroyed another earth ship to save his larger crew and the ideals of the earth constitution. He had no other options. Sheridan did have other options and many people died needlessly paying his price.>>

You’re right that Ryan had no other option. But then he was ONLY trying to save his larger crew and the ideals of the earth constitution. Neither Ryan or Hague knew about the Shadows, or the threat they present. Sheridan does, and he has a lot more people depending on him. Not just humans, but all the races. And taking all this into consideration, Sheridan had no other option.

Besides, in the long run it may be better that a couple extra Earthforce destroyers were taken out, since Earth is in league with the Shadows anyway. At least at this point they are. And who knows how long it will take to change that. I know that the men on those ships didn’t know that they were working for a government that was in the pocket of an alien power, but that doesn’t make them any less dangerous.

Is I, Claudius an influence for the Centauri culture? I see a particular parallel in the scene in which the Empress informs Londo and Vir that they will both be Emperor. It’s been said here over and over, but like a thank you from Sheridan to Delenn, it’s poor and inadequate. Severed Dreams is extraordinary, exceptional, a showpiece of writing, directing, acting, and effects. You have given us a brilliant series, and this climactic episode is a masterwork.
My 13 year old daughter and I watched it together Saturday afternoon, and in less that 24 hours she has every line of Delenn’s committed to memory. In the last ep, Charles Nelson Reilly’ last line is narration set against a black night’s sky and ended with the phrase “being all alone.” I was just wondering if anyone else had had a desire to hear three more words…… “in the night.” Writers often throw in little inside jokes or nods to their other favorite shows, such as all of the “prisoner” stuff on B5, or if you noticed in that same X ep, the guy with the video camera was wearing a S:A&B t-shirt.

Pardon me for asking, but is that a uniform that Marcus is wearing all the time. I should think that that would be the last thing a Ranger would want to wear–something in which he can be easily recognized! Does he have five of the same outfit in his closet, or does he have to sit on his couch in his underwear while his only suit is being washed?

The new uniforms are great, will anyother members of B5 be getting the new uniforms? I hope so.

Was also glad that Sheridan finally told Delenn that he cared for her deeply.

Thanks to you and your great cast for bringing a new standard to SF television. B5 requires mental effort on the part of the viewers, somewhat akin to reading an epic novel. My husband and I appreciate many aspects of your show — the personal integrity of the characters; the emphasis on character and plot development rather than “deus ex technology” ; the respect for all religions, including Judaism and Christianity; and the wonderful mysteries which you unravel through the episodes. I just have a few questions about the background of the Earth/Minbari War:

1) I know how it ended, but how did it start?
2) Was that earth’s first encounter with the Minbari, or did we know them before the war?
3) How long did the war last?
4) An unrelated Minbari Question: There’s a clip in the Multimedia library that shows a Minbari cruiser getting sliced but what i presume is a Shadow Ship (since the attacker is off camera). What epsiode was that clip from, if any?
5) An unrelated clip question: Any chance of getting the various season openers along with the preview clips? I’d love to see the pilot’s, in particular, but I miss Sinclair’s intro (and I love the dischordant music at the beginning of the third season, something not on the CD.)
6) an unrelated CD question: You mentioned a while back the possibilty of a Volume Two soundtrack being released around April. Will there be one,and wll it be out this month still?

If the ripoff of the prophecy scene in “Poison is Queen” didn’t give it away, all the references to ambitious people poisioning one another “back in the days of the Republic” sure did. (After all, it didn’t make sense on the literal level – the Centauri still are a Republic in name, so it’d be like us saying, “Back when America was a democracy”)

First of all, thank you for providing the best hour of television each week. Proof of this is simply that my wife, who is anything but a sci-fi fan, watches the show religiously purely due to its good story telling and great chararcters. Its a pity that the show recieves virtually no promotion for it locally but instead, I have to hear daily the silly reasons for watching that insipid “Voyager”.

My only question is if UPN used the aforementioned Star Trek based drivel to launch its network, why isn’t WB doing more with B5, my guess would be PTEN contractual type things. After all,
watching some of the garbage that the WB Network is using to establish their network makes the brain trusts who gave us “Full House” and TGIF on ABC look like Nobel laureates.

Quite frankly as far as dramas on tv go, B5 could go toe-to-toe against anything that the major networks are force feeding us. I guess network execs figure it can’t be a serious program unless it features “cookie cutter” and stereotypical (I know its redundant, yet appropriate) doctors, lawyers, and cops.

My little tirade is over.

THANKS,

You have frequently stated that the reason the stars don’t move in C&C is that you would need a machine twice as tall as the sound stage to make them move. Yet in Cerimonies of Light and Darkness when Ivonova is reading off the names of the dead the stars are moving in the background. I always assumed it was CGI effects. Couldn’t you do the same thing for C&C?

Yes, she was replaced with a warrior – Neroon. But this doesn’t give the warrior caste a majority on the Council, though it does give them more power than the other castes. As it stands now there are 4 warriors, 3 workers and 2 religious. It had always been 3 from each before.

The war started as a result of a misunderstanding at the first contact between our two races. The details haven’t been explained in detail in the show yet, except that an Earth ship fired on the Minbari cruiser that carries the Grey Council. As a result of this, their leader Dukat died and they mounted a war of revenge against us.

A more full explaination of what exactly happened will be shown in “A Late Delivery from Avalon” in a couple weeks. At least what I found on a spoiler page on the Web. I won’t ruin the details here.

At last year’s San Diego Comic Con, I got to see some B5 blooper reels that JMS brought with him. One showed Mr. Morden in his cell as seen on the monitoring screens in Security, and in the foreground Sheridan and Garibaldi were arguing. About the time that Sheridan said, “According to EarthForce records, he’s supposed to be dead,” Mr. Morden keeled over and fell off the bed. Of course, the audience went into histerics.

So, at least SOME of the time, they use live video, with the other actor(s) in another part of the studio.

<<1) I know how it ended, but how did it start?
2) Was that earth’s first encounter with the Minbari, or did we know them
before the war?>>

This information comes from the book “Clark’s Law” and from information that Joe has provided before on the start of the war.
The first contact with the Minbari was in 2242. The Earth ship DSEV Amundsen, (Deep Space Exploration Vehicle?), commanded by Captain Ellasai Ferdinand VI, encountered a fleet of nine Minbari ships. The Amundsen’s early warning detection system picked up the fleet. The Minbari fleet changed course to intercept the Amundsen. Capt. Ferdinand noticed that the Minbari gun ports were open. For the Minbari, this was a sign of openness in greeting, for Ferdinand, panicking, this was a sign of hostility and he opened fire on the lead ship. After firing, the Amundsen opened a jump point and ran. The blast, taking the Minbari ship completly by surprise destroyed the ship and the resulting explosion damaged several others. By coincidence, on board that Minbari ship was the leader of the Grey Council, Dukat. Minbari ships sent to investigate were mistaken for an invasion fleet, and the war began.

<<4) An unrelated Minbari Question: There’s a clip in the Multimedia library that shows a Minbari cruiser getting sliced but what i presume is a Shadow Ship (since the attacker is off camera). What epsiode was that clip from, if any?>>

This scene is from “Points of Departure”. The Minbari ship Trigati, a renegade warship that refused to surrender during the Earth/Minbari war, was destroyed by another Minbari cruiser at the end of the episode. The Trigati wasn’t happy over Earth’s decision to make Star Killer the new commander of B5. So. in an attempt to get B5 to attack them, and to die with honor, the Trigati came out of hiding and was destroyed by another Minbari cruiser looking for it.

Hey, JMS, congrats on a wonderful show, my girlfriend and I watch in every week (being recent converts) when it is shown on the local affliate (right after the X-Files!) We find it makes us ready to hit the town Friday night. The intricacies of the plot, plus its epic nature concerning the conflict between good and evil (be it within or without) remind me a lot of the quality product that George Lucas brought us 20 years ago.

But to my question –

Is there a model you use for the Centauri? Everytime I see Londo I get a sense of two different influences – ancient Rome and Napoleonic France. Napoleon tried to clothe his Empire in the garb of Republican Rome (he was, after all, Emperor of the French Republic). Clearly, Centauri shenanigans (such as the recent Londo/Refa poison exchange) harken back to the good old days of the Roman Imperium. Even Centauri dress reminds me of Napoleonic costuming. What gives? Was this a conscious decision, or am I just completely off? This has always been at the back of my mind.

Peace, and thanks again.

When Kosh asked Sheridan to come below to witness “Beauty in Darkness”, he was recieved by the sound of chanting monks from the ever popular “Chant” CD. It wasn’t until much later that we viewed Kosh’s true form as a religious icon of each alien race. I wonder, was the choice of monk music intentional because of Sheridan’s human christian background? Could we have heard
a different song if the visitor was not human? I’m wondering if I made the right connection with the
music and what we discovered much later as to what Kosh is all about. Please answer me.
I have many other questions I need answered. I hope this is the place I’m supposed to ask them.

Hello, jms-
B5 is the best thing airing on TV now and even though we must tape it (it airs in the Brownsville, TX area at 3:30-4:30 am Mondays), we never miss an episode. “Severed Dreams” was absolutely the best you have done so far! We have a question; please forgive me if you have already answered this back before Feb. 1996. We’d like to know exactly what the Shadows want. If they are so old and so powerful, what could they possibly want from the “younger races”? I say they want total control of the galaxy and that they enjoy/feed off of the turmoil and pain they stir up. My husband says that the Shadows should be powerful enough techologically to subdue the galaxy and destroy whatever they wish- and then what will they gain? I maintain that the Shadows need the other races in order to enslave them and experience their pain. What is your vision of what the Shadows want?

When Delenn broke the Grey council which worrior cast member left with them? Of the 9, six left. That means that one of the warrior cast members left. Also it is hard to imagine that the other casts would have any direct authority over a ship is run by the warrior cast. When the warrior cast wants no involvement. Especially when all the ships members would be warrior cast. Did the warrior cast give just the ships over to the inexperienced worker or religious cast members? or is the whole ballgame run by the one warrior cast member that left with Delenn.

<<Besides, in the long run it may be better that a couple extra Earthforce destroyers were taken out, since Earth is in league with the Shadows anyway. At least at this point they are. And who knows how long it will take to change that. I know that the men on those ships didn’t know that they were working for a government that was in the pocket of an alien power, but that doesn’t make them any less dangerous.>>

1st I regret having to say more on this but the question is still begged.

How many Earth loyal people were on the 4 “extra Earthforce destroyers” as you say. Was ~90+% unaware of the big picture with Clark and just plain doing their job to protect Earth? They had families and were in Earth Force probably not just for the money but to serve Earth as best they could. Wouldn’t a little knowledge of the truth of the situation turned those 4 “extra Earthforce destroyers” into allies. They weren’t all bad people just missinformed. Now they are dead…

Sherridan chose to kill them all at the expense of his own people and the Churchill. This was the worst possible outcome given his options.

Best case: Drall would have turned them away and planted seeds of truth about Clark. Or Drall would destroy a minumum of small ships to turn them away.
Or Worst case: destroyed them all (Which happended anyway at a cost of more life(the Churchill/fighters) by Sherridan’s decision)
Couldn’t Sherridan have used Drall’s system to talk to the enemy ships individual people instead of the top of the command chain?? He could have swayed some to defect or mutiny while their command staff was planning(Drall’s non-hostility demand would have cought them off guard)

Look at the propaganda campaign Clark can mount against the Minbari (half the earthers hate them already because of bad blood from the last war). What could Clark do about a non-expansionistic planet that is worried about something that’s in it’s own orbit. Drall could just have a respect for the work being done there or find it “fun” to listen to them(no politiacl agenda it’s his space). I suspect Drall is the only reason the shadows haven’t attacked the station yet. Then again if all you need is a Bizerker(sp) probe to destroy it, I’m suprised it hasn’t happend yet. Clark would want to befriend/use that planet for his own selfish gains. Make a deal with it/bribe it, “learn it’s secrets” (as overly commonly spoken on the show)

What would Clark do if all the evidence was presented to the people on Earth using Drall’s system (if possible). There wouldn’t be a Minbari warship to yell Alien infuence/invasion about would there? Like there is now as shown by the later episodes. (and I would have trouble supporting the Captain if one day he had on another strange Non-earth uniform on one day. This was a big propaganda mistake that leave Sherridan open to more negative allogations about alien influence. What flag does that uniform support? your own? are you a military dictator now?)
What does it cost to replace all those ships and experienced crews that were lost on the eve of a great war that Sherridan knows is comming. Earth is now even less a minor power over Sherridans decision.
Sheridan made a bad call not using his facilities to save lives. How big were the crews on those 4 earth destroyer’s? ~200+ each. Not to mension the Churchill, B5 crew members, fighters, landing pods full of marines and Narin’s who died not fighting the eneny but ourselfves. This was a major victory for the shadows and I think that only the Shadows see it.

Earth lost 5 destroyers and fighters and the Shadows lost none
I don’t know if anyone has seen it yet but the Centauri’s victory was really the Shadows victory. One less to fight

I appreciate being engaged on my comments (no one is always right. Including myself). But this whole thing is starting to remind me of an old saying “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drinK” here we stand by the pool of water.
Long live B5…

Also it is hard to imagine that the other casts would have any direct authority over a ship is run by the warrior cast. When the warrior cast wants no involvement. Especially when all the ships members would be warrior cast. Did the warrior cast give just the ships over to the inexperienced worker or religious cast members? or is the whole ballgame run by the one warrior cast member that left with Delenn.>>

If you watch the scene again you’ll see that only 5 left, leaving the 4 warrior caste members. Remember not to count Delenn. She’s not in the Council anymore.

1000 years ago, when Valen set up the Minbari system of government, he not only divided the council seats evenly between the three castes, but he also divided the fleet evenly. The religious and worker castes each control 1/3 of the Minbari fleet. They also man (minbari?) these ships. Military training is mandatory for all castes in Minbari society, though as I understand it, in times of war they allow the warrior caste to lead the fleet since they are the “professionals”.

Great show! Too bad it ended so badly. Of course, considering the writer’s name was French for “butcher,” I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.

By the way, Bizarro7, do you think there’s any chance that Lennier will change his name to Reinnel and sing ZaBaGaBee on the show?

To JMS: I can’t say much that hasn’t already been said in this huge folder, except give my personal thanks for a truly wonderful show, PLEASE tell us it is here to stay a while. Thanks. Also, feel free to give Marcus more and more lines with antiquated British words and phrases (the ‘Bugger!’ line was perfect)

Regarding Na’Toth: this is something I wondered as well. I always imagined she returned to Narn, hopefully in good health, since her job was more or less dissolved.

To Stormy: I figured he wasn’t sure what would happen if he lost control of his emotions, i.e. anger and rage over what’s going on and some of the awful things he has seen on the station. That was just my read.

Good point about Gen. Franklin. We haven’t heard anything since ‘Gropos’ to the best of my knowledge.

Looking forward to 2 more years…

From: CORLISS100

In “Severed Dreams” Sherridan could have used Drall to stop the attack by Clark and saved at least the Churchill and many if not all of the attacking ships.
(Read Re:Drall vs EA forces by CORLISS100 4/15/96 for more info on this)
He drew “a line against the darkness” as he put it and ended up being the shadows advocate, puppet and pawn.

Sheridan made a bad call not using his facilities to save lives. How big were the crews on those 4 earth destroyer’s? ~200+ each. Not to mension the Churchill, B5 crew members, fighters, landing pods full of marines and Narin’s who died not fighting the eneny BUT ourselves. This was a major victory for the shadows and I think that only the Shadows see it.

Earth lost 5 destroyers, fighters pods and the Shadows lost none. They weren’t even in the battle, they just watched fireworks outside and laughed. I don’t know if anyone has seen it yet but the Centauri’s victory was really the Shadows victory. One less to fight..

Sherridan is leading the army of light to destruction by allowing the Shadow’s plan to happen. He is so proud of himself (if he only knew the true depth of his mistake). How can he possibley defend himself on these actions. “I made them fire first” “they started it, I’ll finish it”. “I abused my rank privilages to talk to my dad for possibly the last time(while others who died never had this honor) to reassure me that I know the right thing to do”. “It was our fight” (it was our fight against the shodows, not ourselves.) the fool.
I don’t see how “keeping the secret” as he put it(which the shadows would already have to know about already) about Drall. Was worth giving the shadows such a victory. For being “the military hero” and the forces of light’s key leader, he is a Jar Head at grand strategy. The shadows couldn’t have planted a better man there themselfves. He is only a captain ment to take orders, but he is not capable of leading much beyond that. As evident in SD. It was a shadow victory and Sherridan thinks it was his. His only reflection on the battle was I’ll not wear the EA uniform (a political blunder). If the forces of Light don’t get a better grand military leader soon, the shadows can’t loose. People like Sherridan will win it for them.

Sorry.. I just don’t see the point of Marcus yet. The Robin Hood accent with the Earl Flynn routine doesn’t seem to be adding to the storyline at all. Last week’s episode where he punched out a whole room of hoods seems like macho posturing in a series that is thankfully devoid of that. It reminds me of the original Star Trek or worse yet, a Steven Segall routine. I hope he is not JMS’s Doppelganger like George Lucas/Luke Skywalker.
Sorry, other than that I think the story lines and plots are very complex and well done as well as captivating.

JMS:

Why is the Talia/Ivanova relationship the only one you have chosen to be vague about? We’re very clear about how Sheridan feels about Delenn, how Lanier feels about Delenn, how Marcus feels about Ivanova, and how Garibaldi felt about Talia.

A. Thompson and C.Christian were very clear about the relationship in interviews, but as far as what has been on the screen, the relationship can easily be interpreted as either friends or lovers. Even Ivanova’s “confession” in Confessions of Light and Dark has left some people confused. Had she said “I think I was *in love* with Talia” there would not have been any question of the meaning.

It is not your job to advance anyone’s agenda, but some clarity would have been nice. The “did they or didn’t they” debate is getting pretty old. Did you choose to be vague in order to inspire such debate and interest?

Just curious,

He quit school, moved to NY to write. Every time he published a story, he sent a copy to this teacher (and never received any type of reply). This went on for about 20+ years. Needless to say, I am quite a fan of his. Best wishes for him to get well soon.

Hello my writing god. This is really a script writing quetion, not a B5 question. Sorry.

I have recently finished writing a screenplay for a local drinking-and-driving TV show; the screenplay is in the reading format. Now here’s the question: when I begin to write a shooting script, won’t that screw up the “one minute/one page rule?” The guide to standard screenplay formats says that the rule applies to both the reading and the shooting format. How can this be? Won’t the inclusion of all the extra slug lines add many more pages to the shooting script draft?

This is going to sound corny, but I don’t care.
You are my idol. I want to be like you some day.

I have finally found the medium to transmit my enthusiasm for B5. We were both die hard trekkers, but B5 has replaced any and all treks as our favorite. The two most recent episodes were among the best television we have ever watched!.

My major gripe is that my local station (WPHL-hiladelphia) keeps moving the date and time!!! and there is no advertising announcing the new time slot…this is extremely annoying to me (As I am sure it is to your sponsors). I always worry that this is an indication that the viewer support is lacking and that B5 will be removed from the lineup..which would really make me angry.. I hope all is well in B5 Production land…I would hate to lose the show!!

I called the station and talked to the programming people, and explained to them that I don’t scan the tv guide each week to check whether my favorite show would be on at its usual time…..and requested a response. I know that you have more pull with these stations than we “little people” JMS, so is there any way you can stop them from pre-empting B5 unless they announce it during the show the previous week? Such a small courtesy for a serial seems like a minor concession to me!!! I am going to write to them and suggest this, but since I was busy on Saturday (the first airing of each week……) I will have to wait until the re-runs……whine whine whine.

Anyway, I am thrilled that the show is dealing with such meaty issues as political repression and spirituality in a really meaning ful way. I’ve added several quotes from the show to my quote book, and I watch “religiously”. No matter what one’s beliefs about the after-life, we are here now, and the show really celebrates how precious that is!

The Roman and Napoleonic influences do seem to exist, but I’ve always thought of the Centauri as akin to post-Soviet Russia. Remember the line from the pilot: “now what are we, a tourist trap, open 24 hours a day…earth standard time”. Always reminds me of the current situation, american corporations moving into the new Russian market, opening McDonalds on Red Square, getting Russians hooked on Snickers bars; swarming over the carcass. There are still many old-line Russians who resent this as an indignity. Another, minor, parallel: the Centauri being more advanced in space technology when earth encountered them, then earth eventually surpassing them (as in sputnik to apollo). No country on the planet today has more reason to long for the “good old days of the empire”. Treachery, murder… hallmarks of soviet political infighting, esp. in the Stalin/Beria days, and earlier (Rasputin was poisoned). So, a much closer parallel there, I think, not to mention to the rise of the nazis in Weimar Germany, to recapture the “glory” of the previous reichs and do away with the “indignity” of the Versailles treaty they hated. B5 is filled with anti-fascist messages, based on past history and present dangers (most esp. in this country).

Hi, I love the show, it’s the most REAL sci-fi I’ve ever seen (Star Trek is ok, but a little too mushy, after all, humans arne’t THAT perfect). Enough of the flattery, I have a question for you.

1. If Babylon 5 seceded from the Earth Alliance, would Londo and the other ambassadors still be there? I would think that after signing a non-aggression pact with the EA, the Centauri Republic would not deal with a “renegade self-declared state”.

2. And, how significant are the colonies on Proxima 3 and Orion 7, are they major Earth colonies, or minor backwaters (they must not be to have been mentioned so prominently). In the same context I’m curious in the B5 universe, rough population of Earth, and perhaps an estimate on those colonies.?

3. Are the Omega class destroyers the EA’s primary ships, are there any larger battleships? Or is it just limited by the FX budget?

Also, as a comment, I perhaps have a philisophical difference on the action of the Sheriden and the others turning in their uniforms and adopting new ones (I can understand from a dramatic, turn the show in a new directions standpoint). If they believed they were in the right, and Clark commiting the illegal acts, they should continue to wear the uniforms in defiance to Clark in demonstrating their rightiousness (geez, that’s sound cheap). They way it seemed watching the show is that they pretty much gave up for good on the EA.

And a question I know won’t get a straigt answer. :)
Will the EA return to any normalcy or is it all gone for good?

Thanks,
Brian

I suppose the uniforms were meant to convey authority over the Earth Alliance, but for crying out loud – they all looked like storm troopers as they stood on the bridge with smiles on their faces. Smiling faces contrasted with a malevolent fashion statement – like in every movie/documentary about WWII I have ever seen. Gave me the woolies, I must say. What’s up with that, JMS?

Indeed, WCLove (and jms) – B5 is a helluva history lesson, for those who will listen, for those who desperately need it, and for those of us who are intrigued by history and all the very real causes (mostly human fallibility) and effects, and so we’re happy that there’s one – and only one – show on tv that illustrates it, and in so kickass a fashion. To me the most interesting scifi is the kind that reflects the future back into our own past & present, and can show the way before us. People underestimate this; if not for scifi we wouldn’t have satellites… or Tang… or SDI… or the internet, things that are shaping our present history. Well, maybe not the Tang (yecchh).

Quickie to jms – KBHK (they prefer UPN44) in San Francisco said you’d be at the Cathedral Hill this past weekend, yes, you, “Michael J. Straczynski”, as in Pollard or Fox. BTW, that’s about 4 blocks from here – hope you enjoyed the neighborhood, Mike.

Jms: First I want to thank you for the most interesting and intellegent show I have ever seen on T.V. And tell C.C. that Ivonova is God!
Second, I have to echo the sentiments expressed earlier about feeling frustration with how vague the Talia/Ivonova relationship has been portrayed thus far. Is your point to keep it so vague to foster discussion? I can’t beleive the majority of B5’s audience wouldn’t be able to handle the implications of two women in love. EvenDS9 showed two women kissing and nothing bad happened. And, although I have become resolved with the depressing fact that A. Thompson won’t be back and the relationship thread between them is over, please tell me that the impact of the relationship on Ivonova will not be forgotten or glossed over. It seems out of character for her, who opens ups so rarley, to not be deeply effected by what happened and the loss involved. People are saying that Ivonova’s vague confession to Delen is the last we will here about their relationship. Can you tell me if this is true?

Very true, very true. It always struck me funny though, that those people on the station and back home on Earth didn’t see the obvious parallels between the Nightwatch and the Nazis, or even Stalinist Russia – which is probably true to form, considering that people nowadays don’t study history.

I only saw five of the nine counsel members leave, the sixth was Delenn herself. Showing one of the remaining council members grabbing one leaving does leave open the possibility that one of the warrior caste left and either a religious or worker caste member remained behind. With the hoods, we don’t actually know who left.

Absolutely great job on the show, JMS! You have my complete faith in the story line.

Dear JMS:
The Indianapolis Star ran a wire story today regarding a formerly homeless man, Corky Parks who, as the article was entitled was “Spared from death, he lives as an extra”. The article was written by Duane Noriyuki of the LA Times and references his work on B5. I found the article to be a well written human interest story, with B5 referenced in a positive way.

Best of luck to him. I look forward to keeping an eye out for him in further episodes.

Will B5 be salvaging any of the wreckage from the B5/Earthforce battle?

Do you have any problem with a writer adapting the formula you have put together for B5 to piece his own project together? Not story elements or such, but the processes you have pieced together to make a low budget/high concept enity like B5 work. I have read your articles, found your book at a used bookstore recently ($3), and followed your message threads for years. You have set up a program structure that fits nicely with something I have in mind (my story is a modern horror/religious tale). I love the interaction with your fans and the care you show in responding to them. You write up to and not down to your fans. You treat them as they are; the people you are entertaining. Too often you see the fans being treated as a side thought. They will take any dribble shoved to them. They are there to support the show, not the show there for them.

Basically, the Marines burned through the outer hull, moved into the inner hull (like any good vessel, this one is double hulled), then came up at a right angle, looking for a good wall to come through. You *don’t* want to come up through the floor, because then you have to climb out one or two at a time, which makes you a sitting duck. Better to move off a few feet, and come up via a section between walls and blow your way through so you can come out en masse.

There was a delay while jurisdictional matters were worked out. Apparently, as per our license agreement, if any other writer does the B5 comic, I have final approval on everything. If on the other hand I write for the B5 book, because I’m then functioning as the writer, and writers typically aren’t allowed to have final say over book content, only editors, I can’t have the same level of approval, and the book can be badly rewritten. The final upshot of all this is that finally it’s may well go ahead, but I certainly won’t be writing for it under those conditions. It’s strictly a political and jurisdictional thing with DC that makes *zip* sense.

Actually, the song is “Exekiel in the Vallely of the Dry Bones,” and it *wasn’t* a Prisoner reference; it was just right for that moment, given what he was describing doing at that instant (the slow vivisection of Minbari).

If something originated with a show like the Prisoner, and gets used, then it’s a nod. But in this case the song goes WAY back a long time before that show ever existed.

It’s really a function of the interface. On CIS I can use an offline reader like Tapcis, and can answer at leisure. So my thoughts tend to get a little more complex. Here, and on Usenet’s moderated B5 area, I’m doing it all on-line and live, and so I tend to get a bit more terse.

AOL does have an offline reader/responder program, called FlashSessions (mail menu).

It does let you pick up and respond to mail and newsgroups offline, but I’m not sure it would work with message boards like this one.

If it doesn’t do what you want it to do, you might make a suggestion to Beta Central, AOL’s development center (e-mail: WinBeta).

I just recently read both Blood Oath and Clark’s Law. One problem – G’kar has a different wife in each book! In Blood Oath her name is Da’Kal, and she and G’kar had a rather difficult relationship. Thanks.

I’ve always enjoyed the the Centauri. They seem to be a distillation of many of the most distasteful aspects of European history, all rolled into one civilization that was never here for any of it. The seeming buffoonery in the early episodes was especially telling; I imagine that aristocrats of the Russian Empire or the late Roman Empire looked rather comic to anyone who hadn’t crossed them yet.

Fascinating that they managed to get both the great Napoleonic suits AND Bozo haircuts, to boot. Is the haberdashery native to Centauri Prime or did they adopt it after seeing reruns of “Napoleon and Josephine” after First Contact?

JMS will there be a new leader for the army of light?

Sherridan is only a captain ment to take orders, but he is not capable of leading much beyond that. As evident in SD. It was a shadow victory(Eath lost 5 destroyers) and Sherridan thinks it was his. His only reflection on the battle was I’ll not wear the EA uniform (a political blunder). If the forces of Light don’t get a better grand military leader soon, the shadows can’t loose. People like Sherridan will win it for them. The Minbari just played into Clarks propaganda hand.

Kosh perhaps as he seems to know the future. Even Ryan from the Alexander seems more capable than Sherridan. He was aware and hessitant to destroy the Clarkstown even after it destroyed General Hagge(sp). And where the hell where is General Franklin? He is needed by the army of light desperately. Sherridan is a great captain, unfortunately that’s where it ends. Sherridan just can’t handle the grand scale of things.

I’m concerned about the Army of Light’s last defeat in SD. Is there strategic help on the way or not. Sherridan is a great captain, unfortunately that’s where it ends.

(2) What’s going on with Marcus? Where is he from? How do earth colonies disappear without anyone noticing? Is there supposed to be a mystery here or is it just vagueness of background information? I for one am REALLY confused about who knows what about the Shadows… Marcus seemed pretty well-informed from day one, well before Sheridan and company would’ve known.
(3) In the SD battle, it looks like 4 major earth ships coming to attack in the first wave. Were the other two smaller? The battle seems to focus on the Roanoke and the Agrippa.

I vote for the four hour version. I want it so long that I get so overloaded that I won’t be twitching waiting for the begining of the next season. Hell, right now I get an hours worth and only have to wait a week and I find myself twitching for the next episode!

One thing, please don’t break our hearts.

Vir’s new wife is the scariest thing you’ve shown in three seasons.

The whole idea of a beautiful, innocent flower of a girl who learned to kill Narn for fun and enjoyment at her fathers side gives me the willies.

I hope she really wasn’t kidding when she said she loved him. Maybe it gives her hope to change. I’d hate to see Vir stuck in that kind of mess.

Thanks for another knockout show!

I also got the impression that Delenn was in charge.
With reference to the SD battle being a Shadow victory – how did you get that out of it? Earth has sided with the Shadows – Earth lost – Shadows lost. Sure, we can always hope that Earth will end up being on the good side, but right now, it doesn’t seem to likely. And you can’t fight a war on the premise that sooner or later the enemy is suddenly going to undergo a change of heart.
Sheridan has a somewhat narrow perspective on things, mostly because he hasn’t been told everything that’s going on. I think this will improve once he gets a better grasp of the situation.
I don’t think the army of light needs a new commander. Sheridan is just what they needed. He is a fighter. Delenn is essentially a dreamer, though she does pull through when needed. She has enough guts and enough intelligence to be in charge, but not enough military experience. This is where Sheridan comes in. So far, everything he has done has been with her approval, providing a nice balance.

In the last two episodes I’ve noticed a new logo on the show – a “5” with a sword thru it. I first noticed in on a conference table as Lennier was telling Delenn that the Minbari captain wanted to tour the station in Ceremonies. Also in that episode in the last scene you could see the same symbol in the pan across to the command crew in their new uni’s. I also noticed it this episode to the left of the door coming into C & C. If I’m not mistaken, the logo there used to be a 5 with what appeared to be an olive branch. Assuming I’m not imagining the change – they got the new symbols up very quickly. Or am I seeing things?

You could call SD a shadow victory, but it also falls under the title, “no-win scenario”.

The EF ships came in looking for a fight. The opening shots were fired by the EF ships, not Sheridan. The idea that he could use Drall to scare off the EF ships without killing them has some validity, but not a whole lot.
Many of the EF crew might have “seen the light”, but it’s equally as possible that as many if not more would be more emboldened against the “renegades who have Minbari tricksters working for them!”
Humans are notorious for being hard-headed. Even though three Minbari Warships and a truely frightening speach from that charismatic Deleen was enought to turn two EF cruisers away, would a shadowy threat from some floating, translucent Old-fart of a Minbari have the same effect on three?

Suppose Drall had had to resort to annihilating, say, the Agrippa. Even supposing that the other EF ships did retreat, it’s still a Shadow victory. It’s not the death of those ships or those crew that made it a Shadow victory, it was the splitting of the EA. (C’mon, when facing a Shadow fleet, is there really that much difference between 100 Omegas and 103?)
If Sheridan had used Drall(that’s assuming Drall would be Used!), it would have been worse. Sure, perhaps more people might have survived, but it would be the Loyal Earth Force, that had retreated from a renegade who would stoop to using some evil alien machine to further his plans of rebelion, rather than what it was, simple humans on different sides of an argument fighting for what they believed in.

As it stands, the EA can be reunited(once the influence of the Shadows no longer controls Earth), but in the Drall Scenario, perhaps the EA would never reunite. When faced with an alien threat, why would you ally yourself with the people who had sided with
an alien machine against their own flesh and blood?

Politics had nothing to do with the command staff changing their uniforms. Sheridan made the decision not to wear the EF uniform as an act of conscience. It was a matter of personal integrity. The character had an understanding that the uniform was a reflection of his internal motivation to serve. When his conscience would not allow him to fulfill the unquestioning loyalty demanded of a military member, Sheridan could not face wearing the trappings without the convictions.

With reference to the SD battle being a Shadow victory – how did you get that out of it? Earth has sided with the Shadows – Earth lost – Shadows lost.>>

I’m afraid that earth lost double as it was earth ships and people on both sides of the fight.
How many Earth loyal people were on the 4 “Earthforce destroyers” . Was ~90+% unaware of the big picture with Clark and just plain doing their job to protect Earth? They had families and were in Earth Force probably not just for the money but to serve Earth as best they could. Wouldn’t a little knowledge of the truth of the situation turned those 4 “Earthforce destroyers” into allies.

Or Worst case: Drall destroyed them all (Which happended anyway at a cost of more life(the Churchill/fighters) by Sherridan’s decision)

I would have trouble supporting the Captain if one day he had on another strange Non-earth uniform, and on another day Three Minbari warships were protecting us from our own people. This was a big propaganda mistake that leaves Sherridan open to more negative allogations about alien influence. What flag does that uniform support? your own? are you a military dictator now?)
He needs the loyalty of the people around him. These are generally good people who want to serve earth. Now He visibly doesn’t represent earth known colors. He doesn’t have an interpersonal relationship with the whole crew (~500+), only the senior staff. How are the rest to understand. Especially when he explains its part of a “Minbari rebirthing ceremony”. Sherridan is a political fool not to expect his uniform to have an effect on his subordinates. Look how much the new uniforms psychologically affected Sherridan and Ivonova. The crew never recieved new uniforms. Sherridan can conduct all the internal self understanding he wants but he has a duty to his crew first. He left his subordinates out to dry where being the focused head leader is concerned. Sherridan is not redefining the Constitution (like clark is) he believes in the origional intended EA. So why should he dress to something different?

The Earth Alliance, not just Earth, was never a third rate power. I think that you need to study a little more earth history before you start argueing about you start argueing about impressions that you have gotten out of the last few episodes. About the uniforms, where did you come up with this impression and how did you get the idea that Sheridan will lose the respect of the crew because of the uniform change. Most of the crew that wouldn’t like what has happened, have already left the station for earth already, the only ones who are left remained because they wished to or at the very worst are inflitrators from the night watch.
The particular area of earth history I recommend studying more indepth is the American civil war!

He may be chosen to be a pawn of higher powers(he has been the shadows pawn as of late). Or he may be chosen to be the father of the first 2/3rd human 1/3 minbari child of Delenn’s. Sherridan is a great captain, but has shown no potential beyond that(he is too crude and unwittingly about the big repercussions of his actions)(he hasn’t a political leadership bone in his body). I liked the issues raised about heroism in “Sic Transit Vir.” Vir seems to have a pretty realistic notion of his own power: that is, he doesn’t have much. His heroism lies in his willingness to use what he has to maximum effect, without an audience or fanfare. I found it charming and a little wild that he didn’t think of himself as a hero, just as a person who can’t let all this pass without some quiet protest.

Vir makes an interesting counterpoint to Sheridan’s preachy brand of heroism. I’ve gotten to the point that I groan whenever I see Bruce Boxleitner get that “I feel a speech coming on” look in his eye. Vir is aware of what he’s doing, and the risks involved, but he’s wonderfully low key about it. It’s the Miep Gies school of heroism.

On the other hand, my 12 year old son revels in Sheridan’s sermonettes. So maybe my admiration of Vir is a function of age, or gender, or something else. Something for everyone, hmm? The preachers and the quiet rebels both have their role in any movement; it was just a pleasure to see the Virs of the world recognized for a moment. TV tends to dwell upon the Sheridans, both in real life and in fiction.

This series has provided more fodder for good dinner table conversation at our house than any other TV show in years. Thanks, JMS.

I’m not sure how to handle the question of “is Delenn Human/minbari/both or neither?” 50/50 seems to straight forward for Minbari logic. So I decided to jokingly tie it into the Grey Council misscount thing. After all, Delenn controls 2/3rd the military with 5/9 of the Grey Council. I was playing off of Minbari-ish logic, and I’m sure it would tie into a minbari-ish genetic/human offspring. As Sherridan said” The Minbari never tell the whole true”

>>Better get your genetics right. IF Sheridan and Delenn ever have a child, it would be 3/4 Human, 1/4 Minbari for starters (any geneticists out there, please comment!). Not to mention such a child could have dominant traits from the Minbari parent anyway!<<

…Ok, let’s do some mendelev-squares.

Let’s say that the bone-gene is dominant, and the hair gene is recessive. That means that, when you draw those little boxes, it will work out something like this: (X is the bone gene, x is the hair gene, BTW)
Sheridan: xx
Delenn: Xx (assuming she’s *half* bonehead in genetics)
possible child outcomes: Xx, Xx, xx, xx

So you have a 50% chance of a 50% Minbari kid.

This has already been fully addressed:
<<From: RicciMYork

Politics had nothing to do with the command staff changing their uniforms. Sheridan made the decision not to wear the EF uniform as an act of conscience. It was a matter of personal integrity. The character had an understanding that the uniform was a reflection of his internal motivation to serve. >>

CORLISS, there is more to leadership than politics. MacArther had great leadership capabilities without much political savvy. Personal integrity and ego go a long way.>>

I don’t know specifically what the shadows want (planetary conquest, revenge on the first ones, resources, sex, life energy, souls, water, domination, S&M, pig tails and earwax, Wheel of fortune homegames)

IT truely doesn’t matter considering their methodology. However, I do know that serving their cause cannot be good for all the races. OR at least hasn’t been in the past/present. The weaker the EA is the less of a say they will have in the matter.

TGreen you have some spine now beyond a Heckler, but an unsupported comment still can’t stand(make it stand). In my job I examin all aspects of a situation and possible action resultants. >> Are you so sure of those number in a time when everything counts? And so careless about people’s lives and resouces?<<

It is my opinion that those lives and reasources were dead anyway, not because of Sheridan, but because of Clark.
The only way I can see to have saved them would have been for B5 to surrender. That, would have been the shadow victory.

Let’s suppose that optimism is true, and that Drall would have “turned” some of those ships around(that’s not likely, BTW, as it probably would have taken the wholesale mutiny of the crew to do it), now, rather than a single rebelious station, out in the middle of nowhere(this doesn’t count the other colonies, BTW), you’ve got wholesale civil war, half the EF believing this, and the other half believing(ironically quite rightly) that the rebels have been subverted by some evil alien force that happens to look like minbari scum. There would be more battles, more death. Maybe the Minbari would have stoped it, but had they arrived in the middle of a huge battle rather than at the begining of a second one, would they have been as succesful?

no, Sheridan made the right choice, his only choice. Protection from the Minbari only adds another enemy to the EA’s fire, rather than a crusade to rid the universe of the “evil that would have been Drall”

The Crew did recieve new uniforms(see Sic Transit Vir).

If the EF no longer stands as the organization that upholds the meaning of the EA, is it not hypocritical to continue to wear the uniform? No matter what was the original intent, the EA is not what it was, and Sheridan made it clear that as long as the EA is not what the EA should be, B5 is not part of it. The new uniforms are to show that B5 is not part of this new, Clarkified EA.

Hi all,

In the Minbari council chamber, I noticed that there is what appears to be planets or some other type of celestial bodies orbiting the cone that they all stand under. What is the significance of this if any?

In one post a ways back I there was a question about why small fighters like Furies were even used with the power of the big ships. There’s a very simple answer to this going back to earth navies of WW I and II, and modern ships. It is easy to put a limited number of powerful offensive weapons on a light ship, without being able to provide significant armor to protect the ship itself. The classic example of this are the destroyers of WW I and II, which carried a limited number of torpedoes. These weapons were capable of sinking or damaging much more powerful ships, but at the same time these light ships has no armor and only very limited guns.

This episode was the best rendering of a space battle I’ve ever seen in over 30 years of watching sci-fi, including movies, tv, vid of any type. Especially awesome was the Churchill burning. Fire in space is something that has never been rendered like that before, and the graphics people deserve kudos for that one.

In the scale of the Shadow Wars, the fight between the Conspiracy of Light and the Earth Loyalists was a minor skirmish. Remember, the Loyalists aren’t the most dangerous enemy.

The Shadows are.

If the Shadows come to make a try at B5, then *that* is when the Conspiracy of Light will have to play their ace in the hole. Remember, it’s still kinda early innings.

JMS,

One thing I thought was not well done in Severed Dreams were the marines in the breaching pod. They had no breathing or vacuum equipment, resembling nothing else but current day marines. It seems to me that one thing incredibly inherent in the breaching pod would be the potential for blowing too large a hole, or causing other hull penetrations that would cause loss of atmosphere. Those guys should have been in some type of suit or space armor.

As time passes this clan turns their minds eye inward as the vorlons guided the races to do but instead of the vorlons being the guide the clan used instead the ancient celtic mythos and the duality of the Gods encompassing both light and dark.

Fast forward to B5 on one of the last ships from earth a traveller asks to see K’OSH his introduction to him is an ancient drawing of the vorlons true visage. and the question “you asked us once to come to your fire to warm ourselves we declined , because we knew you not and we were unsure of who we were, we are now ready to attend the fire is there a place for us?

think of it a human group who opposes the darkness but is not “blinded by the light”.

My question relates to the final kiss at the episode’s end. I didn’t understand why you spent 3/4 of the hour detailing Vir’s humanity and his distain for his intended’s behavior –and then, have him kiss her passionately at the closing? It simply seemed “not in character” with the portrait you were creating. I’d really appreciate hearing from you as to your intentions in that scene.

the sudden change would be hard for a crew, and

One of the other purposes of a uniform is identification; One can discern friendly from Charlie much easier if there are distinctive uniform differences. Hence the American Revolutionaries wore blue uniforms to distinguish themselves from the redcoats, and the seccessionist rebels wore gray during the Civil War. Even in BDU’s there are subtle differences between helmets and uniforms among different nations. Simply changing one minor detail is not enough to give the troops enough to distinguish in battle, or even to build esprit de corps. (Which is very important when you are trying to sustain a rebellion)

JMS: are the new uniforms a salute to Robert Heinlein’s space opera novels? I seem to recall that many of his space military wore black with silver piping

Severed Dreams was a Shadow victory because the Shadows clearly intend to take over everything, and having their pawns kill each other makes that job much easier.

Look at Molari’s actions in Ceremonies- he is beginning to realize what the Shadows really are. In Severed Dreams, at least 5 Earth ships were destroyed, plus lots of fighters and many experienced pilots lost, all of which will be needed in the final battle.

Clearly, the immediate crisis, the breakaway from Earth needed to be resolved, but resolving that crisis has magnified the future crisis, and made victory that much easier. Look beyond the immediate results- look at the Shadow’s actions. They are helping everyone, and in doing so, helping themselves to victory.
