Well…

Well, well, well…

Well.

BTW, tell Walter Koenig he has very successfully broken free from 30 years’ typecasting, in this viewer’s opinion… no more Davey Jones clone, no more signature screams of pain, no more 50- year-old Russian adolescent (however beloved the character). Your Bester has provided his way out (and he’s an increasingly fun mf to watch, played mit gusto – bet Walter’s having fun).

What interested me was that Londo’s response to his bug problem is exactly the same as his attitude to the Narn ‘problem’. There seems to be a streak of Centauri nature which says that anything – or anyone – OTHER than Centauri is 100% expendable…..

Joe,

Thanks for getting me hooked! I love the show and started saving the eps (I could kick myself now for erasing them in the past. I hope WB relents and decides to offer them on video.) I got a letter to KCOP (LA area) written and will post it as soon as I get some stamps (er, I think I’ll watch “Ship of Tears” again first, though!).

re. “ALDFA”, Just what was Kosh doing in the vicinity of Franklin and Marcus at the ep’s end? Somehow I have trouble believing you placed him there just to clarify the “We all know who Merlin is” line.

re. “SOT”, One thing I’m not really thrilled about is Koenig’s performance. I find them a bit, well… “hammy”? I like the “Bester” character, though (or rather I can’t stand him <g>) and found the turnabout from thorn-in-the-side to possible-essential-ally interesting. The bit about Carolyn integrating herself with the circuits and machinery vaguely reminded me of a movie Koenig did a while back about cyborgs found on the moon.

Keep up the great work.

It has been established that alcohol drives Minbari into “homicidal rages.”
And we know what it does to humans.
Centauri, on the other hand, seem to drink just about ALL the time, and we rarely see any of them get inebriated, let alone “blotto” (except, perhaps, for Vir).

So, Joe, my question is: Do the Centauri need alcohol like a food? Or do they just enjoy their booze a lot?

Quite correct HF. Pournelle’s ships got gravity this way as well. They only spun when not under accelleration. Led to some confusing but imaginative descriptions.

(Ship of Tears references)

Not that Kosh and Delenn seem to have gotten a thing right in that now-famous scene in “Shadow of Zha.”, but they said that those humans from the Icarus who wouldn’t cooperate were killed. Now it seems from SoT that cooperation is unneccessary, at least to use people as cores of Shadow vessels. Were there just no openings for that kind of work, excepting the two that have been dug up recently?
GREAT episode, BTW. I was expecting filler for another week or two, but the last fifteen minutes just made my blood run cold. For a minute there I thought you were gonna say that all the Shadow vessels have centuries-old Narns in the center of them.
Another question: are the telepaths that weapon/contribution you (or Pigdog?) said that humans have that no one else does? The Centauri and the Narn both have telepaths. Is it a matter of sheer number or is the reference to something else completely?

Delenn seemed as surprised as anyone else that telepaths could ‘interfere’ with a shadow vessel operation. Did the Vorlons and Minbari simply overpower the Shadows in the last war? It does seem like Delenn knows alot more about the Shadows than she is telling anyone.
Second, how did Bester know to disable the Shadow ship with telepathy? Is this just from ‘being a telepath – you work it out’ or does he know more about the Shadows than he is letting on?

Enjoyed seeing some detailed touches to Carlyon surrounded by wires. I saw some shielded power going in as well as data wires. Nice touch.

BTW, to the left of Carlyon’s head in a couple of shots, I think a saw a PC internal power connector.<G>

Having just seen the updated schedule for B5 episodes, my initial reaction is “What the ****?!?” After “WWE” we will be getting at least 3 months worth of re-runs. Which means the final 5 episodes of season 3 will not air until September at the earliest. Who, may I ask, is the brainiac behind this decision? This is so frustrating! Last year it was nearly impossible to avoid spoilers for the “Final Four” (I knew about Talia, Sebastian, the fall of Narn and Kosh months before we got the episodes — and I didn’t go looking for those things). I mean spoilers are *already* getting out about the end of the season — by September it’ll be nuts!
<deep breath> Okay, so I’m ranting, sorry. I just hate to see B5 and it’s fans treated like this!

Joe,
thanks for the greatest TV saga.
The Shadow ship the White Star encountered in “Tears” went away moving in a way I have never seen before, I believe; it seemed like it was weaving and slowly spinning on itself almost drunk-like one might say; was Bester having an effect on it without even trying ? As I recall, we have seen Shadow ships go mainly straight in hyperspace, kind of in a hurry to get where they are going. This one lazyly spun away.

Dear JMS,
A quick question, in the scene where Delenn is explaining to G’Kar about her knowledge of the Shadows, (Which was an absolutely fantastic scene! Tell the actors how much the fans appreciate their wonderful work!) …she mentions that she was a “still a part of the Grey Council at that time.” I thought her being part of the Council was a big secret…now that she has told G’Kar, will she tell Sheridan and the rest that she was once Satai? Or did she already tell them and I just missed it?
Just curious…..
Thanks again for a wonderful show, I am keeping my fingers crossed for renewal! (…and writing to my TV station!)

Oh, come on. Didn’t anyone but me see this coming? It’s the domino effect. Hold more over, season starts later, left with more. By season five, we’ll have half a season’s worth of episodes left over that’ll probably never get shown in most places because of conventional timetables for season beginnings. It COULD be worth it if they’d show the forbidden season one episodes. Do they really think that they’ll drive away more viewers than “Hunter/Prey” and “The Long Dark” will again?

My daughters were yelling, “No, no, they can’t (do what they did)! I’ll have to admit I didn’t see this one coming (the “Biggie,” at least)!

Somewhere on-line you said something to the effect that one of this season’s eps had bothered the cast & crew so much that no one would sit with you at lunch for a few days…was this it, or does it get worse? (or better, from a dramatic point of view) If your intent was to hit us in the gut & remind us that >anything< can happen to >anyone< at >anytime<, you certainly succeeded! This is one of those times I wish it were a book so I could look to see who’s still alive on the last page!

I hope you have something sufficiently hideous in store for Morden!

On a lighter (at least for now..I have a feeling dark things are coming here, too) note, how much
longer are you going to keep stringing us along before something significant happens with John & Delenn? The gradual evolution of their relationship has been great, but according to the dates given in STV & I&E, it’s been a long time since the almost-kiss, and it’s hard to believe that, after getting to that point, they haven’t said or done anything to move things along–or is something going on that you haven’t let us in on? JMS,

After watching Ship of Tears, I have a few questions. First, how many PsiCops feel the way Bester does, and will any others be willing to help with Bester’s new war?

Second, I read in the lurker’s guide that the shadows have another name that they use for themselves. What is it (if I may ask)?

What will become of all of the rescued telepaths? There were about 100 of them.

Finally, I saw Interludes and Examinations (no spoilers here) when you showed it at Marcon, and I think it was possibly the most suspenseful and emotional episode to date. Congratulations to you and the cast on a great piece of work!

Study some of our own history. Wars have a tendency to frequently last 4 year, 5 or even longer in most cases, especially the large ones. Each B5 season is one year of time (or has been so far). There is plenty ‘o room for surprises, these few early battles are just the start I would guess.

The story kind of came in all at once; and yes, in a way, it’s the story I’ve been preparing to write from day one. The eclectic, weird background I have is what enables me to tell this story this way. This is, I think, my seminal work in the field. To invoke greater names for a moment, Heinlein wrote lots of books, but he’s known for Stranger in a Strange Land; Frank Herbert wrote lots of books, but he’s known for Dune. I’ve done a lot before this, and hope to do a lot after, but I suspect that this is what I’ll be most known for when it’s all said and done.

“I’m assuming when you are the creator/writer/executive producer of a running series that you must spend an enormous amount of time either “doing” things related to it or “thinking” about things related to it.”

Absolutely. Even when I’m not actively working on it, it comes up constantly in conversation, or in other ways. It never goes away, and I’m always jotting down notes for future use.

“How does this affect your lifestyle? Can one be in your position and still have a personal life – or is literally everything you do somehow involved with, wrapped up in or connected to “the series”?”

Not if you’re going to be this involved with the process. It’s really a 24 hour a day job. I haven’t seen a movie at a theater in the 8 months preceding the wrap; haven’t gone to a party except the B5 christmas and wrap parties in about a year. For the six years it’ll take to make this show — you count the pilot and post-production on the last year — I went into this knowing that my personal life would pretty much go to hell for that period of time. The show is the single dominant concern; has to be, or it won’t be done right.

“Are you able to go out and have a good time and not think about anything to do with B5, or is it always there, in the back of your mind?”

It’s always there.

“I very much admire what you do, but feel it must, at some point, drive you a little nuts……..”

Sometimes, but only a little. I fought for 5 years to get this show on the air; it’s a great privilege, and a terrible responsibility; WB has entrusted me to do this properly, and that’s a great compliment. In the media, it’s unspeakably rare to get one singular vision on the air, without compromise or committee…I’m not *about* to complain about the hours. I’ve got absolutely no grounds to complain about ANYthing.

Even the babble is pretty tightly scripted. The hesitations and occasional stumble-restatements are the actor’s delivery. There’s occasionally a very tiny bit of improv in that kind of scene, but very little.

Actually, it’s Chekov’s rule of playwriting: If there’s a gun on the wall in act 1 scene 1, you must use it by act 3 scene 3. Similarly, if you fire the gun in act 3, you must show it in act one. I do try to play fair with the audience, and either hint at or point to what’s coming in various ways, so that if you back up all the episodes, it’s right there in front of you.

Hey there, jms, welcome back.

You know, even though there are always options, and it’s an annual part of the territory you’re familiar with, I suspect this renewal uncertainty is no fun for you, especially after you’ve just made “full use of your powers along lines of excellence” for season 3 (and this is how a president you and I can remember once defined “happiness”). So, some presumptuous moral support… that 50/50 4th will come; it’s destined. Has to be. Too damn good and too much struggle to this point not to be. That’s my vicarious perspective on it. – Phil

Very good. I also enjoyed the way Kosh communicated with Sheridan at the end.
We see that Kosh cared for Sheridan in a Father – son way.
1. If Kosh knew or had good reason to suspect this would happen why not retire to his ship.
2. Was Kosh afraid as Sheridan said.
3. Was this one of Londo’ s chances to redeem himself.

JMS,

A few questions/comments about this episode…

1) Do you agree that this was Walter Koenig’s best performance? I liked how you humanized the character while keeping him a first-class bastard…

2) What’s scarier than a room full of frozen telepaths?

3) Was “A simple yes or no would have sufficed, Mr. Lennier,” a gentle dig at Trek’s propensity for verbose technobabble? Okay, so I know the answer to that one.

4) Would you pass on this message to the PTB (pinheads that be) who scheduled the end of the season for September?: “May you be so rich as to own a house with a thousand rooms…. and may you be found dead in every one of them.” Either that or just flip them the bird….

…of course you might want to wait until AFTER you’re renewed.

JMS;

In, I believe, Ship of Tears, the opening sequence shows a very interesting collection of ships ‘guarding’ B5. I loved the flying saucers! Does this mean the proposed Babylon Treaty has been adopted by the Nonaligned Worlds?

Also, I am curious, as are many, as to what happens to 100 telepaths. If they are all from the Mars Re-education camp, I guess their sympathies are not with Psi-Corps.

Kudos for Walter on his portrayal as Besner. By far the best Besner episode.

I hope like heck that B5 gets renewed, but even if it doesn’t, you and those who have worked with you can take satisfaction in a job that was both done the way you wanted, and was recognized, at least by some of the lunatic fringe out here, as a job well done. When you think about it, that’s something very few people can say.

SPOILER SPACE FOR AN EPISODE ****AFTER**** WAR WITHOUT END

Ok…. that should do it.

I saw an article in my local paper that was about B5 the other day. It had said that Melissa Gilbert, real life wife of Bruce Boxleitner, would be appearing on the show as the captain’s missing wife (or something to that effect). The TV register in the OC register (or LA Times, I forgot which) had several other spoilers about a main ‘but not credited’ character being killed by the Shadows, another character quitting his job due to ‘drug abuse problems’, a funeral on another planet/station/ship/something (pretty vague as to which, though other sources say Minbar or Narn… well, ok, maybe they’ve said more than that, too), etc.
Is WB responsible for the spoilers, or do the writers of these articles just not care about protecting any spoiler material? And who has posted the WORST spoiler openly (either upcoming or in the past)? I’ll have to keep an eye on them…

Thanks for writing the best Novel never to be printed (yet)! I love B5 and I won’t stop ‘reading’ till the ‘about the author’ section (nice photo, BTW…).
When you go back to novels, I bet Dune will have some REAL competition for that ‘bestest-ever-selling’ sci-fi novel/series! You tell the gargantual, timeless epics with the best of them! (Well, at least until Chapterhouse: Babylon5 comes out….. )

Well, remember that we never defined what those feelings were between Sinclair and Delenn; she had a great deal of respect and admiration for him, yes. And she had a fair measure of faith in him as well. Question is, what’s the root of that? We’ll learn some of that in the two-parter. As for Sinclair, he was mainly involved with Sakai.

Very nice clean lines, that are much more flattering and kind to more figures than the other uniforms. (Loved those too.) They have a hint of the Military as well as being somewhat Minbari in appearance (almost like one of Lennier’s tunics.)

Thanks again to you for writing a FANTASTIC show, leading a grand cast w/such talent and assembling an incredible and talented crew. Congratulations!

The Slap by Ivonova inititated physical contact. Bester therefore knows all that Ivonova knows. I don’t think Bester went there for the reasons he stated. The episode took me through so many emotions in such a short period of time that I was physically tired by the time it was over, and much saddened. This episode did things almost unheard of in television — the apparent demise of two major characters in one episode — and you deserve credit for risking the displeasure of your fans. JMS answered that Bester did not have time to scan Ivanova. However Bester looked surprised at the sudden outburst of anger. And numerous times, we’ve been told that strong emotions are the most difficult to block. If Bester was surprised by the slap, he might suspect Susan’s abilities to block casual scans. And Bester is quite bright …

No, it’s purely a PTEN decision to hold off these episodes until next fall. This is the third time they’ve done this. In the first season they held up showing “Chrysalis” until right before season two. In season two they held up the last four episodes this way, and now it looks like they’re doing that with the last five of season three. These shows aren’t held because they’re not done yet, or they need more work. It’s simply a PTEN programming decision. Remember the final four episodes from last season that we didn’t get to see until half way through October? Well, they showed them in the UK in July.

I believe that even JMS has lamented this, saying that it does kind of undermine the whole point of having a cliffhanger episode to end the season with.

But still, I can live with it as long as the series is renewed. And I’m actually taking this delay as a good sign. After all, why would they delay the episodes until fall if they weren’t pretty sure there would be another season? But then, nothing’s sure until it’s anounced.

While its very moving to hear those speeches from Marcus and Dr. Franklin about how poor
and down trodden all the Lurkers are on B5, I wonder if anyone has done anything about
improving the B5 economy. I have a few suggestions:
1) Conscription. A war is breaking out, Garibaldi is short on troops, and we have lots of
unemployed Lurkers. Need I say more?

2) Import Chickens. There is lots of room on the station for chicken coups. Between those
farms we keep seeing and the scraps we keep hearing about, there’s got to be chicken feed
somewhere. You can’t get an egg on the station. Tell me there is no market.

3) Tour guides. We’ve got a Choral group on the station and only Kosh and Sheridan know
about it? That group could earn more than a badge if the tour guides were more organized.

4) Set docking fees by supply and demand. Early in the series the docking bays were
overbooked. Now no one comes and we want to increase the fees?

5) Start zero-G manufacturing. Why else do you build space stations?

6) More Tourism. B5’s primary industry seems to be catering to diplomats and traders.
Seems to me they might make some of those tunnels into an Carnival. Even with the war on
there are bound to be people willing to get away from it all for a little while.

In “Interludes…” we see that the Vorlons have weapons capable of destroying
the Shadow ships. Even if the Vorlons themselves are not numerous enough, or
are otherwise unprepared to make a major move against the Shadows, is there
some reason they can’t share their weapons technology with their allies?
Perhaps something to do with the fact that the Vorlon vessels are, at least
in some measure, alive? Are the weapons systems an organic part of the ships
themselves, and therefore incapable of being used in any other type of ship?

Do the Vorlons believe that the other species are incapable of using such
power responsibly? Are they afraid (now that we know they >do< fear) that
their own technology would be used against them after the shadows are
defeated, or unwilling to risk their status by sharing their knowledege/power
with other species?

JMS,

It saddens me greatly to know that there is only a 50/50 chance of renewal. Since “Shattered Dreams”, B5 fans here in Denver have really been coming out of the closet. It also amazes me as to the diversity of the fans. I don’t, and I’m sure others don’t, want B5 to go down in history as “The Greatest Story Never Told”. Sure, if B5 was not renewed you could finish the story in a book. But for me, Bruce, Mira, Jerry, Claudia, et al are B5! Those are who I see when I tune in, and those are who I want to see (barring anyone coming down with a sudden case of death). I know, if I get near a point, I’ll make it. Anyway, with all the apparent support for B5, albeit (sp?) most of it latent except here, why would WB have any doubt as to renewal? The show is just now starting to peak, so why pull the plug? Who will ultimately make the decision and when can we expect it? Who does the selling of B5 to WB? It seems that you have to resell it every season.

JMS, why don’t the cast of Bab5 do more P.R. for the show? I’d love to see some of the cast members make the rounds of the various talk shows. Do the talk shows resist the cast due to lack of mainstream popularity of the show? If the Bab5 cast was able to make appearances the popularity of the show would hence increase, no? I just don’t want Bab5 cancelled in the middle of its saga, and putting the cast out where more people could see them might help. The only cast member to receive any major publicity is Bruce – but then, he has always appealed to the masses. I’d love to see Claudia exchange barbs with Letterman – she’s witty and smart. And Mira is a story in herself. Oh, well, just my thoughts on the subject…..

I absolutley love the show, and I have a question for you, and I’ll leave the “sucking up” to Songo. (sorry Brian. but you’ve been bad lately). In The Shadow of Zha’Ha’Dum, in the scene where Kosh shows Sheridan what happened on the planet with the Icarus, one of the technicians says that “there is a BLIP on the K lens”. In Ship of Tears, Bester uses the same term, “blip”. Was Psi Corp on the Icarus and were they looking for telepaths on the planet, or, is the use of the word coincidence? K lens…? Kinetic…?

Dear JMS,

As a sort of Newcomer to B5 I just want to compliment you on your work. I usually HATE Sci-fi shows (if you could call this one one really) because their problems aren’t realistic, there’s always some techno-babble crap that I HATE, and the problems are always solved in an hour (Unless it’s to be continued) FINALLY, a show that packs drama, romance, Sci-fi, adventure, and REALISM into one GREAT “Novel” for television. I love shows that continue from episode to episode, which is one reason why I LOVE B5!!!!! If you don’t get renewed, I’m sure going to be mad and I’ll personally write to your superiors telling them that they can take their decision and %&^$*%*&$^$^$^&$^&$^&$^^**&#@)#)$&@*@!#!$%&^#$…….and stick a hose in it so they have to pull it out!!! (And you can quote me on that) I got one question that I’ve been dying to know (if you’ll tell me.

1. As I’ve read synopsises of the show (so I can know what’s going on) I question Ivonava’s loyalty. There’s been some times in early episodes where she seems hesitant to go against Earth. Is she truly behind Sheridan and the Secession from Earth? Or do her loyalties lie with Clark. Or maybe (although she hates the Psi-Corps) she feels sort of obliged to them, her being a mild telepath and is loyal to them????

Thanks,

Hi JMS,

First off, a big fat Thanks for the panels you did at the Columbus OH Marcon last weekend. They were funny and informative and the blooper reels and episode were a real plus. Thank Pat Tallman and Richard Biggs also – hope to see you all next year!
Now a question – during your Sunday shindig you showed a sort of music video comprised of clips from the show put to Christopher Franke’s great music. I thought it was fantastic and was wondering if it will ever be broadcast or distributed so everybody can see it??
Thanks for a damn good story and I’m looking forward to seeing “Babylon 5″ offered as a college course someday! (Maybe literature or film…)

Greetings JMS –
(And it’s lovely to find this place.) I’ll save all the Babylon-5-is-tops stuff for another post. (grin)

I have come to believe that a major (the primary?) role model upon which Vir is based is Emperor Claudius (4th Roman emperor, I believe). There are a number of parallels with Robt. Graves’ ‘I, Claudius”. So, I was wondering – are these parallels intentional (or has Ambassador Molari’s agent slipped something into my wine)?

I’ve noticed in several episodes dreams seem to be playing a big part of what’s going to happen. When Sinclair was captured, he had a “dream” of Kosh, Girbalda and Ivaona. (I remember Ivanon’s because of the black bird on her shoulder.) G’Kar’s dream of his father and most recently Sheridan’s in “Interludes And Examinations”. I know there’s been others but I’ve noticed that Kosh seems to be in each and every one. Was this his way of fortelling the future in an effort to warn those involved since whenever he’s asked a quesiton, he’s very cryptic and this is the only he can communicate?

Thanks,

“Who will ultimately make the decision and when can we expect it?”

Bottom line..probably Robert Daly, the head of WB. The irony is…yes, the ratings are on the constant upswing…in the last batch of new episodes, we’ve gone from in the 50s out of 270 or so syndicated shows, to the 40s, to 34, and the last rating sheet put us at #29; our demographics are some of the best in the entire syndicated marketplace.

The complication we’re facing is that WB makes its money on the advertising, and they need double runs to make their full investment back and make a profit (B5 has the responsibility, like other PTEN shows, of showing a profit every year, even though 99% of all syndicated and network shows run at a deficit in first run, knowing they’ll make a profit down the road.) Right now, the syndicated marketplace is glutted, and the lion’s share of available time slots are going to pre-set commitments to FOX, UPN, and others. Given how tight that makes things, it’s *very* difficult to get stations to set aside double runs.

The syndication marketplace is now *nothing* like it was when B5 went on the air; syndicated dramas are fast becoming an endangered species. So the decision will really come down to what WB sees when it counts up the number of double runs and does the math. It’s all cold numbers in the end.

Perhaps this would be better posted in the “Craft of B5″ folder, but I am somewhat curious — given that there apparently is a 5 year conception to B5, how many scripts, if any, to future unproduced shows are already in either draft or final form? As a corollary, how many aren’t, and how long does it typically take to finish the final script?

Dear JMS,

Now that I know that you answer (and very graciously do so, I might add) I’d like to ask you some more questions.

1. Exactly what is the ranking structure for Earth Force military (If you created one) I’m confused for it’s been incorporating both Army and Navy ranks. How do the ranks go?

2. Are the Shadow ships actually SHIPS as in physical objects. The way they move it seems as though the ships themselves are an actual being in its own right.

3. Are we ever going to see Lieutenant Commander Takashima again? (The XO in the Pilot movie) from it seemed like. She was in on the assasination attempt against Kosh, so she must’ve been tied to some conspiracies. Will we see her again?

4. Are the Vorlons going to play a big role in the story? I mean, Kosh is like the wise man who says nothing, but is saying something at the same time. He doesn’t seem to interfere with much, yet there have been times when he has had major involvement.

5. Curious, what is the highest rating a member of the Psi-Corp could get? I know Bester is a P12, but is that the highest, or are there higher ratings?

Thank you in advance for your answering my questions. Keep the show going, and I’ll keep watching : )

Things in B5 usually progress so fluidly, I’m feeling that I must have hit a mental speed bump at some point during the last episode or two.
Now, I understand the Shadows are now attacking openly, but other than the fact that they are facing nasty customers, do the other races understand the true nature of the conflict? Is everyone now up-to-speed in the whole Shadow War, and when did that happen?
Are the Earthforce personnel in the new Shadow-War Central set aware of what is going on (they must be to do their job, but it seems that all the caution about bringing people on board the Army of Light bandwagon has gone out the window–is it unnecessary now?)?
Since when can B5 track Shadow ship movement remotely?
These just seem like major changes that were sort of glossed over. Of course, I missed the first 8 minutes of Interludes, so it all may be explained there–if so, sorry!

Since all the massed forces of the Light can’t seem to do much against the Shadows, and everyone knows about the Shadows now, just *what is* the job of the Rangers? Information about the Shadows now seems to be exchanged openly among the players, so they don’t seem to have much value as a covert intelligence force. Unless they have some secret weapon, I don’t really see that they’re going to go up against the Shadows themselves sometime soon. So just what are they supposed to be doing, other than looking romantic (which is OK with me, but probably not enough to earn a paycheck)?

JMS I studied World War I and II quite a bit in my Histroy calsses it sounds like a lot of the themese in Babylon 5 may have been from WWII. Germany expanded taking over it’s naighbors, France was occupied by them, kinda like the Narn/Centauri war? Can we assume that the United States can be viewed as the Vorlons coming out of isolationism? And the United Kingdom as the Minbari Federation? Just thought I’d ask if you got some of your ideas of that.

Also I am a member of the B5 fanclub, and i sent out my order the same day I saw the first report about it in the message boards, so any way do you know if an Earth Alliance Pin or Rank abr wil be available for purcase soon?

You establioshed that the Shadows use telepaths to power their ships, are the for somereason only human? ANd we also know that the Shadows and Vorlons are quite similar in tech, biorganiz, and that they have a similar ship structure. Heavy Warships, and Smaller Fighters that look similar to the large ships. I assume that VOrlons run their own ships, but can a human fly a fighter like they would a Star Fury?

Season 4- Shadow Wars, finish season with concentration on Earth Conspiracy
Season 5- Take back earth, liberate Narn and limit the Centuri as done in WWII, install Vir as emperor (instyalled by the new good Minbari/B5/Earth/Vorlon alliance) then at this point Shadow Wars near defeat for Shadows, the fianl blow sent, Sheridan goes to the last strong hold of the Shdows, Z’Ha’Dum…… Thanks for the help let me know what you think please

No scripts are in hand for next season, in any form; this is always the case each year as we wrap production. We wait for WB to renew the show, then provide a script order. Once we have the script order in hand, scripts get going. If it’s a freelance script, going from first meeting through 2 drafts of the outline, 2 drafts of the script, it takes about a month, plus the time I spend revising it; if I write it myself, it’s a lot less time, because I know the show more than any freelancer can be reasonably expected to.

And in a similar vein: Are the bare bones of the story written down anywhere, or do you simply carry all in your head? How much do the writers know about where the story is ultimately going? (Other than yourself, that is — granted, this season you’ve done it all.)

JMS- nice try to lead us down a wrong path. After watching I&E, I think Londo understands more than we have been shown about the Shadows(you were trying to lead us astray..). He didn’t flinch at hearing the shadows whisper to Morden(He knew they were around him). He expected to see Morden again as it is he (Londo) who is calling the shots on Centauri prime. Londo is an excellent politician, he called Morden exactly during the first confrontation(the attempt to weaken Centauri prime by engaging in many small wars and weakened home world defenses). He looked at what the death of his beloved would serve and saw it was Morden. Now he has secured Centauri prime by making this false deal with Morden. Londo will be setting up the shadows who would serve his (fake) revenge on the galaxy. I would have almost had to wonder about the outcome, but you held our hand too firmly down the path JMS(the flashbacks and Morden’s boasting about if he hadn’t been removed from Lord Refa he could have stopped this). From that I know that Londo is just embracing the enemy to undermine him. Clear as day. You tried to hard and I caught it. Leave things more to wonder in the gray area. I’m surprised that Morden would believe that Londo would blame Lord Refa as Lord Refa’s life is in Londo’s hand. The poisoning(too obvious) Refa wouldn’t kill himself by this after following all Londo’s previous instructions. This is brilliant of Londo to play this hand as he did, especially after loosing the only woman he ever loved(very hard), he still defends the Centauri Republic with all he has. A true Centauri. When will he confront the Army of light? When will he apologize to G’kar for stooping to their level and attacking narin(This would have been forced by the Narin’s eventually anyway from first season conditions)? Will they sit together at the “code 7R” round table before the end of next season? Will the code 7R come to stand for 7rangers or 7races left in the end?
JMS, answer if you can, or better yet just “hint”.
Long live B5.

…David!! Woowoo!! grrrr! hubbahubba! Ffft ffft! Awoooooga!
Sorry….

>>2. Why are the shadows attacking everyone?

>>Good question. We’ll get that by season’s end.<<

My guess is that they had a really cool show out, but when the Vorlons came, they forced the Shadows out into bad time slots, then demanded the Shadows quit if their ratings fell below 10% of the Vorlon’s cheesy show’s ratings. Fine, the Shadow Show was GOOD! But, what they didn’t count on was that the Vorlons mentally screwed up all the younger races, and manipulated them into watching Merlrose Space or something, and the Shadows lost their show before the 50000 year arc was completed…

>>3. Is B4 going to become a big part of the storyline?
In a sense.<<

It has always been there?

>>4. Do the vorlons have a large amount of ships?
Depends on your perspective.<<

Is this a type of Quantity vs Quality answer? Or do you mean “If you count the Humans and Minbari as Vorlons (which they might someday become in a sense), then they do. If not, they don’t”?

>>5. Is B5 going to be renewed?
We remain cautiously optimistic.

Will we ever find out how Kosh was poisoned (way back in the pilot) through his suit? Is his suit part of him? Or was the hand thing a one-time-only occurance and traumatized him so deeply that he never shook hands with anybody since? I was waiting for answers, but they were not too visible given what we could see of him as he was (that bright flash in Morden’s faceplate or the blurry thrashing forms in the shadowy fog) …defending himself(?). If his only hands are telekinetic by nature (IMPUDENT!), then how were they poisoned?

JMS,

By double runs, do you mean twice in one week, or something else? Here in the Bay Area, as you probably know, B5 runs on Thursdays and Sundays, at 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., respectively. They are both prime time markets with major advertisers. I do not know how many other locations do this, but I hope it is a lot. In fact, does anyone know the number of stations nationwide or worldwide that air B5, and how often in one week?

JMS,

I would appreciate clarification on Morden and the Shadows on B5. I remember about a year ago when the Spider-like beings first appeared. I have some related questions:

1. Are they actually the Shadows themselves, an ally, or some sort of machine?

2. They seemed in charge back then, but in I&E, Morden seemed in charge. Is Morden human, an ally in human form, or a Shadow being? What is his relation to the Shadows, other than an emissary?

3. Since the Shadows?? can move around invisibly on B5, capable of killing Vorlons, and should by now know of Sheridan’s active role in fighting them, would it not be easy for them simply to eliminate B5’s command structure? If so, what keeps them from doing so?

I&E was one of if not the best B5 episodes to date. The show keeps getting better and better. Keep it up and congrats on the increasing ratings.

3. Who is Morden?

A few quick ones. You’re a busy man.

1) Every time the shadows have attacked in the past, they simply phase out of hyperspace in a perfect attack position, and have a MASSIVE element of surprise. In Interludes, why do they go a-cruisin through regular space in the scene where the Vorlons attack? On purpose, by accident, why?

2) What exactly did the shadows do to Kosh? He seemed pretty powerful attacking Sheridan, plus signs point to him as a being of energy rather than matter. The shadows just look like big spider-mantis guys. Do they have psychic powers as well?

3) I was watching an old Buck Rogers and I swear I heard them call an alien a Vorlon. It was some kinda cheesy space vampire. Hmmmmm….

1) How did the Shadows defeat Kosh, was it by physical or mental means or some other way.?

2) Is there any force that is overwhelmingly stronger than the Shadows? The First Ones perhaps?

3) Will we see the end of the war before the show ends?

4) Can anything else go so completely to hell?

Let me say that the only other time I had to pause for more than 15 minutes to reflect on an episode just seen was the 2nd season finale of Deep Space Nine (when the Dominion utterly opened up a crate of whoop ass on everyone). Thanks for showing me that there’s no such thing as a best episode, they all just keep topping each other.

If I can make a suggestion….

Please try to avoid packing a message with 5, 7 or 10 questions or more; the odds are that I won’t be able to answer all of them, or even most of them. The problem with the AOL interface is that if I use the Read New command, once it pops up, if I log off the point where I came in is lost. If I take a long time to answer 7 questions in one message, the odds are good that I’ll either get bumped or have to go do B5 stuff and won’t get to the other messages/questions, and it’s hard to backtrack afterward. It’s also a bit more than I find manageable, given that when you combine all the services I’m on, about 500 messages per day flit in front of my corneas.

So if we could keep the questions down to just a couple per message, it’d help me a lot.

Has any or everyone forgotten about Lyta. Isn’t she an agent for the Vorlons and a telepath. And what about that drug G’kar took when he had is telepathic episode with Londo in the elevator. How do we know it didn’t increase his possible telepathic abilities that were latent in his species?! I’d think WB would have to look at B5’s viability as a WB net show, if the syndicated market has changed so much. Besides its incredible dramatic and artistic appeal, the show, as you said, has ratings that constantly climb; it draws the right demographics; it’s a showcase series. It’s certainly better than anything WB network has to offer right now. I realize television executives are there to make a profit–everyone is, eventually–but the damn bewildering thing is that B5 is PERFECTLY able to make a profit. More able than any of the pathetic shows already on the WB weblet. So, is there any chance of this happening if the syndicated option dies on you? In my market (Tulsa OK), we have two stations that carry B5, and I don’t think either reruns it. WB net picking it up makes so much sense. Hopefully, it’ll come to pass. Otherwise, we’ll be stuck in a sci-fi world of Star Trek mediocrity.

3. – How many more White Star class vessels have the Minbari built?

Dear JMS,

My question to you is about the Centauri. Since their hairstyles length indicates their social status, and women are bald, does that mean that women are considered inferior to men much like pre-20th century America? I was always curious about that.

Also about the renewal. I find it ridiculous if you don’t get renewed. You’re the best Sci-fi show out there (But you’re really in the drama category as well) and you turn a profit every year. Exactly what is your show numbered usually in the ratings?? Also, in my area two stations run it. One at 5, and the other at 10:30 (The 10:30 being more local) but that station that runs it at 10:30 USED to run it at 8 but they switched the time for some reason that baffles my mind. At any rate, it would be a big upset if B5 wasn’t renewed, and there will probably be some execs at WB and PTEN who should be afraid to sleep at night if that happens ; ) Glad to see that you are not cocky about the shows renewal and remain “cautiously optimistic” good thing.

Keep the shows coming and I’ll keep watching : )

Way back, Vir Cotto and Morden had a little meeting, in which Vir wished that Morden was dead, with his head on a pike for all the world to see. Vir also gave Morden a little wave gesture, where he waved each finger seperately (if I recall correctly).

Now, since in various human societies, when a person is POed with another, he may give a hand gesture also. It may be in the form of the thumb thrust between the fore and middle finger, or with the middle finger straight up, or any other similar gestures, which represent a certain part of the human male anatomy. Since Centauri anatomy differs in one significant way from Earther anatomy, was Vir’s hand gesture more than just a wave?

I was thinking about this when Vir met Morden in the hallway in I&E.

1. Did you intend to give characters’ names intrinsic meanings? “Morden,” for example, can quite easily be taken as a reference to death.

2. Given the body of work so far, what one major creative aspect (characterization, arc design, etc.) would you go back and alter given the opportunity?

3. Was a conscious decision made to limit merchandising at the series’ start?

4. Are you any closer to casting Patrick McGoohan for a guest shot in Season Four?

JMS – is that from the old quote, to wit: “There are three sides to every story – your side, my side, and the truth”? I first found this quote when I was 13 (early 1960s) while searching through a large book of quotations to use as ammunition against some rather nasty girls who were needling a friend of mine. SHE wanted to kick their ass; I, instead, wanted to fight them with words. Nothing, of course, ever came of this, except I continued with my non-violent, book-thumping ways as a journalist – and my friend? Well, the last I heard (and it’s been awhile) she joined a motorcycle gang. There must be a moral here somewhere….. 😉

JMS,
In Ceremonies, Delenn and Lennier have this discussion about the prophecies which struck me as part an ongoing conversation between them. I had the feeling they didn’t quite see eye-to-eye about something. This is the second time Delenn has warned Lennier that prophecies are not always what they’re cracked up to be and that she might not live through them. I haven’t a clue what this is about.

What’s going on ?

JMS, I am really surprised that since the to do with nightwatch, Sheridan hasn’t beefed up security for Delenn, for political reasons alone.

She is THE most important supporter for B5 among the Minbari and one of the contenders for power on Minbar. If anything happended to her, who would pick up the slack in keeping up support for B5 among the religious and worker castes? If only to send a message to Minbar that B5 acknowledges the importance of protecting Minbari leaders wouldn’t some kind of security be appropriate? Even a discreet ranger would help.

Secondly, I’m a little confused about the Minbar government situation. From the B5 comics, I thought a new leader had been chosen. Delenn would then be the leader of a faction.

Joe:

Yet another powerful one. My favourite scene was the confrontation between Sheridan and Kosh. Lots of residual feelings finally boiled over. Bruce was very good in that scene.

Curiously my overwhelming emotion at the assassination of Kosh was anger.

1) Please tell me that smug $%** Morden will get what’s coming to him before the end of the war.
2) How many eps before we see the new Vorlon (let’s try not to think about how many MONTHS that’s going to be…..)

Joe,

Great episode, My wife and I were really left to pondering what comes next after this! I can see that Londo has lost out on one element of his prophecy, trying to ensnare Morden to kill him is the wrong thing for him to do…Londo is quite smart and politically savvy…I know he realizes there are three chances to redeem himself, will he do this by giving into his greatest fear??
And a more reasonable question here is, will we know of the last mission for Koshs’ ship?

Here’s to the series renewal..(I’m confident it will be…)

JMS, I was rather taken aback by John’s behavior during the kidnapping. He was too physically calm while the situation was in limbo. He just stood there, with his arms at his sides, more like bored executive. Marcus, Lennier, even Susan, seemed more on the money in their reactions. I would have expectded more pacing, more agitation in his voice, more distracted looks. It wasn’t until she was injured and he pulverized the sociopath that I saw the John Sheridan I’m more familiar with. Not that he has to be violent all the time, but this disconnection from his feelings was rather disconcerting for this viewer.
What gives?

JMS, some of us on another topic area (Delenn/Sheridan) have been discussing this relationship at length, and I have some questions that I think are very reasonable.

If I were getting emotionally involved in someone who was really from another planet, even if he/she looked part human, I’d have a LOT of questions. Neither John nor Delenn wants to scare the other off. It’s also obvious that Delenn hasn’t dated any other human. Are you going to deal with her transformation a little more and give us a peek into how Minbari relationships develop and questions John might have?

Second, we’ve seen that John is very protective of the women in his life. Look at his reaction to Morden, the man at the restaurant (black dress date), to the Inquisitor and recently with the kidnapping. If I were him, I’d be wondering about what repercussions there might be if word got out he was involved with her. He’d be naive to think nobody would notice anything. Delenn is start
ing to get touchy feely in public and if other fans have noticed this in Interludes, wouldn’t other crew members or the larger B5 population? The rumor mill would pick it up, if it hasn’t already.
What’s your take on this?

OK, maybe I was a little sexist there. My apologies, but I hope you all knew what I meant, when women couldn’t even vote or own property and such. Sorry for not clarifying : )
