<<<JMS has stated elsewhere that Zathras brought the device up from Epsilon 3. Although we still don’t know who actually built it.>>>

Well, that makes sense. But if that’s the case, then that must mean that Delenn still has the Triluminary she got from her comrade on the Grey Council (the one she used for her transformation) and supposedly the Grey Council had two more (they had three all together), which means Zathras must’ve brought three Triluminaries along with him for the trip back through time.

Jms,
Since everything lately seems to be comming in three’s…
1) Why is Ivonova wear only one ear ring?
2) Is the Triluminary that Sinclair used to transform himself the same one that Delenn used?
3) You mentioned that we might see b4 again… is there a chance that we could also see Sinclair/Valen?

As always my best to the cast/crew/and writers of the show.

Hi,

Just wanted to say the finale was wonderful. No way do I believe that this is original storyline that pre-dated the first season but a good story is always to be praised.

Could there be a Valen book coming out of this? Pretty please? The evolution of the hero story has been done time and time again. Nobody does the evolution of the sage. Notice I don’t ask for tv episode, a hostile mode for (how did one tv exec put it?) – interior stories.

<< Would YOU categorize Babylon 5 as a Science Fiction show, or a Drama? I know that it is set in a Science Fiction setting, but the storylines and such are really, I think, in the Drama category. >>

Why can’t it be both?

Certainly “The Twilight Zone” was considered drama, and frequently entered the realms of science fiction, fantasy, and whimsy.

I tend to agree with the writer Jerry Pournelle, who said that in a sense ALL stories are science fiction. Stories that are called historical fiction, for example, take place in an unreal world that the author has constructed to resemble an actual period of the past, but do not take place in a REAL past world.

I just wanted to clear up something here, that EVERYONE should know,

Everyone thinks that the last part of WWE2 (which I am anxiously awaiting to see) is the season finale. It is NOT, I repeat NOT the season finale. What is happening is that the show will go into some reruns for awhile, then show two more new episodes in July (“Walkabout”, “Grey 17 is Missing”) and then in probably late August or September the last 3 episodes of the THIRD season (“And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place,” “Shadow Dancing” “Title Unknown”) will air, with the 4th season premiere airing the week after the 3rd season finale. (Optimistically assuming b5 will get renewed) I have mentioned this before, but I just want to make it clear. WWE2 is NOT the season finale. 5 more episodes follow, and from what I’ve heard, those episodes leading up to the season finale and the finale itself are going to be something VERY, massively, immensely, huge. Just wanted to finally make things clear.

Right on all counts but one…. we WON’T be getting any new episodes in July…we have to wait until at least September for the final 5 according to the published rerun schedule.

By the way, thank you, Warner and PTEN for making sure those who make the sometimes Herculean effort to find and watch Babylon 5 don’t go unpunished for their trouble. Perhaps I’ll follow their example and just wait until September to watch or buy any other Warner Brothers product as well.

In any case, World Without End is without a doubt among the best 90 minutes of TV America has produced since Rod Serling shuffled off this mortal coil. Congratulations are in order to JMS and everyone in the gifted and dedicated cast and crew of Babylon 5; to paraprase “Sebastian”, these are the right people at the right time.

Was Sinclair always intended to be ‘the one’ to travel back in time? I don’t know the whole story of how Sinclair (O’Hare) was ‘reassigned’, so it crossed my mind that maybe, in an earlier incarnation, maybe Delenn was the intended ‘one’. Was she not supposed to have become a man in her chrysalis? Was the ‘indivisible trinity’ planned from the start? Any ties to real-world religions? Are there any ties to Earth circa 1260 A.D. (King Arthur??)

I’d disagree with JP. The ‘science’ part of it is important. A historical fiction is something that ‘could’ have existed. Science fiction should be something that could not exist were it not for some as-yet-unknown technology or phenomenon, or some such. And simply having a drama (like TKO, or a lot of Star Trek ‘sodes), wherein the entire story could just as easily happen in this here time and space we live in, I would not consider science fiction. That would be fiction in a different setting, is all. My $.02, and it did’t cost a $.10

The continuing storyline is wonderfully complex and rewards loyal viewers for their persistence. We are eagerly looking forward to seeing the upcoming episodes and we fervently hope that B5 will be renewed for a fourth season.

WWE Parts I and II was wonderful. Great storyline. Wonderful dialogue. It provided satisfactory answers to many lingering questions and posed many new intriguing questions for fans to ponder.

What’s the deal with that scene with Garibaldi on the station? The rest of the time travel stuff pretty much comes together and makes sense, but Sinclair talks as if that scene (“watch your back”) was foreordained, part of the “actual” history, etc. Clearly it’s not part of the alternate history because Sinclair would’ve known fully well by then that it wasn’t going to happen. He seems desperate to warn Garibaldi about something that almost certainly can’t happen as shown. Assuming that scene is part of B5’s real last hurrah after all, what the heck was Sinclair doing there? His self of “some age” must have been in that battle for Sinclair to leap ™ in, but what age? Does Sinclair come back, change back, there for the last hurrah? This seems doubtful. I don’t think any of us really understand where that scene fits into things or why Sinclair was so worried about it so late in the episode, after it had long since vanished for “possibilityhood” if it was part of the alternate future. (1) Does it all make sense in coming episodes? (2) Is that scene the victim of the “replacing actors after season one” business? (3) Was Sinclair actually leaping ™ into Sheridan’s body, since they’re both *the one*?

JMS,

I would like to point out a couple of questionable items about the episode. 1. Sheridan’s temporal achoring device appeared to have been destroyed in part one. Zathras picked up the pieces off the bridge of the Whitestar. However, in WWE Part 2, Sheridan reappears in the corridor of B4 and drops the device which Zathras then attaches to the space suit. 2. In “Babylon Squared” the crew complement aboard B4 is said to be 1,000. In WWE Part 2 they say the have close to 2,000 on board. 3. Regarding the letters sent to Delen and Sinclair, the letters are 900 years old but Sinclair traveled back in time 1,000 years. Did Sinclair live 100 years before writting the letters? Or are the letters really 1,000 years old? 4. That was Melissa Gilbert’s voice, right?

I have no problem calling it a science fiction, or SF (which also includes speculative fiction) show. I know a number of writers in TV who hate the term, deny that what they’re doing is SF, but I’m proud that it’s SF, and would definitely classify it as such.

How did the vorlons know about valen? (there were two of them with sinclair at the end)

You’ve also let 100 years for Valen to live after his first appearance. (1000 year flashback, and then the letters being written 900 years ago) is there any chance that we will see more of valen?

I hope so, seeing Micheal Ohare again made me realize how much I’ve missed his character.

War Without End Part 2 – minor spoilers

JMS,

Any normal writer would have been satisfied with doing the flip side of B2 – making it consistent and moving on. But not you! You go and take on Londo’s death vision and resolve it now. AND you still managed to ask MORE questions than you answered.

If I weren’t used to more questions than answers, I’d be very upset. But this is the whole fun of the show.

I loved the CONTEXT of Londo’s death at G’kars hands – I had many hypothesises (sp?), but having this as a selfless act to save ‘the good guys(tm)’ . . . never occurred to me.

BTW, had a few fans over for some adult beverages and pizza just to re-watch WWE1 and view WWE2 first run. B5 episodes are becoming social events!!

War Without End, Part Two Spoilers

JMS,

I noticed some talk regarding inconsistencies with B2 and I have to say I didn’t see anything particularly glaring.

Except Delenn not having red clothing on, I felt it held together very well. IMO, if Delenn’s clothing is the biggest consistency problem, big deal!!

Regarding Za’Ha’Dum and Sheridan dying, I assumed, like most others, that Sheridan would physically die, but I think a worse fate will happen. It seems from future Delenn’s POV that Sheridian’s spirit will die via traveling to Z’Ha’Dum. Thus changing him drasticly. If this should be true, it could be worse than a physical death.

Just my take on the WWE.

Actually, you should pay closer attention…..Delenn’s outfit was green — but it had RED sleeves (don’t believe everything you read on the Lurker’s Guide). She has this on throughout WWE Pts. 1 & 2. The only inconsistency is that in “Babylon Squared” her red sleeve that is shown has a ruffle on the end of it. The ruffle is missing in WWE Pt. 2.

Also, how did the Vorlon’s get involved with the “presenting” of B4 to the Minbari? Bablyon 5 is an excellent show. The characters, plotlines, acting, editing, and production design are far above the norm on tv or, for that matter, in the feature world. I would be most honored to be a part of the show in some way, shape or form. Do you accept non-agented submissions or story ideas?
I have watched the show for a year, and have been an avid science fiction writer and reader since I was five. I’m currently in post-production on a short sf project I started as a senior in film school, and I’m working on a second feature-length sf script. I am specifically wondering if you would be interested in pitch ideas for the “non-arc” episodes of the show.
I just read in “Variety” that you write most of the episodes for the show, including nearly all of the “arc-related” episodes, but that there will be openings for four or possibly five “non-arc” episodes during the next season.
Regardless of my chances to write for Bablyon 5, I will assuredly remain a faithful watcher. My e-mail address is A Vincie@AOL.COM. Thank you very much.

I have my mom to thank for getting me to watch Babylon 5. She heard that a new sci fi series was beginning, and that it looked rather interesting. .She is not into Sci Fi herself, but she knows that I love a good show. She taped the episodes, week after week, and NEVER told me she was doing it.. I think it was done more out of habit than anything. I was in graduate school, getting my masters in English Literature..in New York. < I now live in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.. and am going to be teaching soon…>

Anyway, one day, <Early on>, I flipped the t.v. on and watched an episode of Babylon 5… It was the episode where Ivanova comes to terms with the death of her father, and the conflict with her uncle and her Jewish faith. Being a Jew myself, I was stunned that a science fiction show could tackle such a topic and handle it amazingly well. I was hooked just from that episode alone.. <Later on in NYC, Peter David would present a video log of his time spent on the set, and he too focused on the fact that B5 handled religion in such a fabulous manner.>

Anyhow, the episode in which ALL of earths religions were presented as THE religion of earth brought shivers down my spine.. It was a GREAT moment.

I would also like to add that <I’ve said this before, but TOUGH…> it is an AMAZING privelege to be able to converse with you, and have you answer our <sometimes repetitive> questions…

I just hope that you NEVER tire of the process, or the praise that we pile upon you.

Your writing is among the BEST ever on telelvision, or novel form. The dream sequence, and the dialogue within the death of Kosh scene was so touching, that I had to watch it several times in its entirety before I could let it go. It was incredible. NEVER before has a television show brought such emotions and SATISFACTION to me before..

I wish you the best in the future, and hope that I can continue to keep in touch with you to let you know how much what you are doing means to me, and that what I get out of it far surpasses any other form of entertainment I can think of…

Regards, and best wishes for continued success…

I heard a story at dinner tonight that I thought I’d pass along to you. My honey and I had dinner with some old friends we hadn’t seen in a long time. Somewhere along the line, the subject of TV came up, and I mentioned that we are hooked on Babylon 5.

“THAT show. What is it with that show?” one of the women said. “I can’t believe how crazy people are about it. I haven’t seen it, but after this week, I have to take a look.”

She then went on to tell us why. A coworker was watching WWEp2 last Thursday night when she heard a gunshot outside her apartment window. She hit the floor immediately, then grabbed the remote control to start the VCR with one hand while she was dialing 911 with the other. She was afraid she’d miss something!

The B5 fan went to work the next day, and told the story — and the rest of the office decided that if the show was THAT good, they’d have to start watching it.

Oh, my, god – was that our beloved Cousin Brucie in Part 2? Too much, JMS! I guess the reports of Cousin Brucie’s demise were premature – please confirm that it was indeed NYC radio king, “Cousin” Bruce Morrow as the crew member on Bab4. (I can still hear Cousin Brucie ringing that bell all the way down the east coast….)

As for Part 2, my brain is still on overload – I have to go back and replay it – and then come back here and read all of this week’s messages.

Wasn’t Melissa Gilbert scheduled for some appearances on Bab5? Would those be the ones coming up in July?

Take care – and congrats to you and all the cast and crew to another great season (best regards to Pig Dog, too!)

I must congratulate you for “War Without End, Part 2.” This particular episode was the most well-
developed, complete, detailed, and all-encompassing time-travel story that I have ever seen or read in any medium.

You especially deserve praise for working Sheridan into the plot, BELIEVABLY, since he did not exist when the storyline was initiated in season one (“Babylon Squared”).

I thank you again for bringing such a wonderful show to the TV.

I just watched WWE2. I’m still sniffling from it. I have to watch it again. You are a superb story teller who has the incredible talent of completely wrapping the audience into the story – mind, heart & emotions. That combined w/the wonderfully talented cast who absolutely SHINE in their perspective character roles. Never have I experienced a series that has gripped me intellectually as well as regularly ripped my heart out, while I ‘boo’ the bad guys, ‘cheer’ the good guys, & continually wonder if they truly are who they seem to be.

The character driven story lines are eloquent. The relationships are realistic and hopeful. The topics in the stories make a person think… not to mention, cry. The episodes that come to mind right away are “Confessions & Lamentations” and “War Without End Pt. 2.” Even when I watch them again, I still cry.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart (amidst the puddle of tears) for bringing this WONDERFUL tale to us.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled praise & thanks session.

My thanks to all who are involved w/”Babylon 5!”

Joe: I recently watched “Severed Dreams” once again and I noticed some stuff…

1) The Churchill and Roanoke were destroyers, but probably not the Omega-class like the Alexander, Agrippa and Agamemnon are. Is there a different class of destroyer, and if so, what would the operational capabilities be as opposed to the Omega-class…something along the lines of fewer fighters, or fewer main guns or something else entirely?

2) What were the names (and classifications) of the other destroyers coming in right at the end, only to turn tail and run at Delenn’s suggestion to “be somewhere else”? I couldn’t make the names out but they were there.

3) Do you follow any rule of thumb when you name the Earthforce ships, and would you accept other fan suggestions for ship names?

Thanks.

Joe,
If you were/are contemplating doing some more B5-related television after the series is complete, have you ever given thought to doing telemovies about the LAST Shadow War of circa 1260 CE? With some fans clamoring for it on other folders and now that Sinclair is Valen, there’d be no humans and that would blow a lot of minds away…”Where are the humans? There are no humans!”

Unless of course, Shadows and/or Vorlons visit the Earth back then…and run into Michael York!

Dear JMS (or someone else who may know — don’t want to discriminate here)

I am curious about a possible detail in the writing of War Without End… Were the plot hints relating to past, and particularly future, events surrounding characters added out of your concern that fans of B5 have some glimpse of the resolution of the series in the event WB elects not to renew the show? I don’t mean to be morbid in asking this. I simply am aware of your devotion to the series and its fans, and the thought occurred to me that the realities of business may have led you to at least give your fans the luxury of some level of knowledge of the resolution of events in the (hopefully not-to be realized) event that the show is not picked up by the networks through the next two seasons.

Thank you for your attention to the question

Yes, that was indeed Cousin Brucie. In fact, according to the commercials here in New York, he was the highlight of the epsode. For a whole week, all I saw was “Babylon 5….Guest Starring Cousin Brucie. And, oh yeah, some mysteries of the universe will be revealed.” It was very amusing, but i was curious if the rest of the country got those comercials too, or if it were a local phenomena?

Of course Morden had a keeper! He had three that we saw on a few occasions, and i believe they were responsible for the death of a certain Vorlon we all know and love. My only question is, since Londo seemed to have only one, were they the same race as Mordens, or were they lesser beings?

And are Morden’s keepers actually Shadows, like I always thought? Or have we not seen an actual shadow yet?

I really enjoyed WWE parts 1 and 2, and how Sinclair’s story became part of the “story that was.” Realizing that B5 is a novel, but that it is one written without the opportunity to go back and revise chapters already presented to the world, I have a question regarding Sinclair’s role in the series. In “Babylon Squared” we saw that he had been aged by the tachyon effect, and in WWE 2 it was established that this effect was part of the reason Sinclair couldn’t return to his own time. I assume (though I may be wrong) that when B2 was filmed, Sinclair was supposed to continue as commander of B5. A lot of the “hints” from first season implied that Sinclair might originally have been slated to be the “One Who Will Be.” In that case, you would have had to introduce a character to become the “One Who Was” — or you would have had to have been planning to send Sinclair back in the first place, in which case you would have had to introduce a character to become the “One Who Will Be.”

Now, my impression is that Sinclair as Valen is the “C” of “we could originally do A and B, but with Sinclair off the station and on Minbar we can also do C, and C is really cool.” Maybe I’m way off base, here, but if you’re willing to say anything about it, I’d like it if you could let us know a little bit about the story as “novel in development” — if a third character was to be introduced to become the third “One,” who might he/she have been? Assuming, of course, that this doesn’t give something away about the series as it presently stands. I could easily be convinced that the “One Who Would Have Been” was Marcus — one way or another — and that with the change in station commanders, Marcus’ role was introduced later, diminished, and perhaps altered. So what is — er, would have been — the story?

sorry,

but awhile back you said there was an episode upcoming that would clarify the Ivanova/Talia thing. however, if you read the Ivanova bulletin board you will notice HUGE arguments about Ivanova’s sexuality. Also notice how many people argue that when Susan said “I think I loved Talia” she didn’t mean in a romantic sense. The episode cleared upnothing just fed the homophobe beast in many fans. I f she had said “I think I was IN love with Talia” it would have been much more specific. I’m sorry, but I think you’ve back pedaled on this whole thing. Why? Network pressure? Fan pressure, internal fear? What happened to more character devlopment. Why even bother with Marcus. If you eliminate him from your scripts, their be no difference to your plots. Is he their just as a vehicle for flirtation with Ivanova to avoid the “homo label” thing? Sorry but in an otherwise incredible show I just don’t get this.

No, SelynaKyle, we didn’t get any of the Bab5 commercials with Cousin Brucie in them down here in Florida. I bet they were a hoot! I just recognized his name in the credits and when I heard his voice I ran to check his biography that I have (“Cousin Brucie: My Life in Rock and Roll Radio”) – and yup, there he was – same face! (I still haven’t got around to reading the book!)

Cousin Brucie used to reach Florida via wavy and sporadic a.m. radio signals late at night. As a teenager, I thought it was oh, so cool to be able to pull in NYC and hear the oh, so cool Bruce as his signal wavered in and out. I still remember the clanging of the bell he used to ring.

Just when I thought nothing could top Harlan’s voice cameo appearance, JMS gives us Cousin Brucie. Hope there are more surprise cameos to come next season.

Subj: To JMS: Atom in 2 places at
Date: 96-05-28 15:51:33 EDT
From: BZall
Posted on: America Online

I read your CIS comment on the experiment that put an atom in two places at once (involving math). Ok, since you’ve given us so much, let an old astrophysicist (turned lawyer) try this one without math. It’s very Vorlon-esque. (though long, sorry.)

The idea is that some things MIGHT be in several places, and you can’t know where it will be without peeking. Since it might be in either at exactly the same time, it’s considered to be in both at once.

Electrons don’t really swirl around the nucleus; they exist in a cloud of probabilities – maybe it’s here, maybe there, but it’s gonna be somewhere in that range. In fact, it’s everywhere in that range, all at once. You can only tell by peeking.

So they took two electrons away from a beryllium atom (amazing how precise they can be, isn’t it, even in 20th Cent. Earth, and it gets better). Electrons exist in various energy states, corresponding to the height of orbits of the probability “clouds.” They stimulated this atom into having most of its electrons at two energy states (two heights of orbiting clouds). Then they took a laser and gently nudged the two clouds of electrons apart, for a relatively long distance at the quantum level.

So where was the nucleus? Was it with cloud 1 or cloud 2? Both, actually. Since you couldn’t tell without looking, it was in both places at once.

Actually, it looks better in a mirror, hanging upside-down from the ceiling.

There. Now I’ve paid you back for the multiple time-lines and flashes.

BTW, puts a different spin on the “grandfather paradox.” In fact, matter can be in two places at once. So why did Sinclair and DeLenn spark apart – temporal energy?

Also, puts a new “spin” on the Vorlon defense set-up; Lanier said it reflects the energy away and takes only the physical impact. But given the structure demonstrated by the BIG Vorlon ship, it’s much more likely that the Vorlons understand the spin nature of matter (quarks are defined more by their spin – their energy levels – than anything else) and simply rearrange the spin. That is, after all, the likely way the Minbari use gravity (just another property of spin). The Vorlons’ four beams “catching” the slice&dice ray was a good metaphor for the way physicists now manipulate power beams with lasers and energy beams. A good book, which your writing reminds me of, is “A Brief History of Time,” by Steven Hawking; the final line of which, after predicting that we will eventually learn the fundamental “unification” theory is something like, “And then we will know the true face of God.”

thanks for a great show.

All I can say is !!! Wow !!!. I have never been so moved and so caught-up by an episode on TV. First of all… yes, I agree w/you MythoPhile… I DID notice than Delenn’s hand was *not* on Sinclair’s suit like it was in B^2. I remember this especially because I rewound the tape A LOT. Hearing Delenn’s voice, but *not* seeing the blue coloring/markings on her pre-Chrysalis hands. Just another nit-pick; a very minor one considering how BRILLIANTLY JMS resolved quite a few threads all in 1 episode. LOVED the resolution of Londo’s dream of the future, & that it seemed that Londo & G’Kar had (possibly) come to terms on some matters.

The shot of Vir picking up the Emperor’s collar was great – fulfilling Lady Morella’s prophecy.

Question for JMS – 1) Had you always planned to have Sinclair become Valen? Or was that as some have suggested that it was, ‘If we do A & B we can do this, or we can also do C.’?
2) Where/when did Sinclair get the scar on his face?
3) Will we find out who is to become Ranger 1? Or will that be Marcus… or Rathenn?

Thanks again for *THE MOST INCREDIBLE* show on tv today. IMHO, I think the show should win Emmy’s in any number of categories – Cinematography, make up, acting (especially Mira’s heart rending & masterful performances!), and *OF COURSE* for writing.

Hoping for the resolution of the FULL story arc. (ie, seasons 4 & 5).

I think that Delenn’s time flash was to the past when she saw Sheridan’s wife comming home.
But it was strange to hear her say Hi. She did not seem suprised to see Delenn there. And that voice almost definitely belongs to Melisa Gilbert.

What I haven’t figured out yet is how did Delenn get into the space suit. I also find it intriguing that Sheridan does not know how he got the other stabilizer.

LOL), the quantum experiment you described (EPR, I presume) has several different solutions besides the standard Copenhagen interpretation (the one I think you described). As I recall, one solution (the many universes solution) suggests that the electron’s pilot wave is superimposed everywhere in the universe and, when detected, collapses causing the explosion of many universes, allowing to the electron to take the preferred pathway and to recombine thereafter, causing the intereference pattern that suggests the electron (or atom, as thje case may be) was at one time in two places at once. I may have butchered the description, but in any event, all this is to say I am not sure JMS was referring to the the Copenhagen interpretation of EPR when he made his comment…. If he was, you can dutily ignore this message, attributing it to the ability of “damn lawyers” to twist the meaning of other attorneys… <vbg>

Dear JMS,

I saw WWE 2 a couple of days ago………WOW!!!!!!!! That’s all I can say. INCREDIBLY clever with what you did when Sinclair in the spacesuit was telling the 2258 Garibaldi to watch his back. A GREAT use of a double meaning there (Watch the ships back, as well as his own for he’ll be shot later on) I LOVE Zathras!!! Not only is he funny, but his final words with Sinclair, Delenn, and Sheridan had a great deal of meaning as well. I have one question that doeswn’t particularly pertain to WWE but nonetheless a question.

1. With all the great work you’ve done, OFF the screen, have you ever thought of making a cameo appearance in Babylon 5? With everything you’ve done, you sure as hell deserve it, and I think it’d be great if you made a guest appearance. How ’bout it, Joe? ; )

Keep up the incredible work.

JMS-

Heres another salute to last weeks ep, it was, as always multi-faceted and thought provoking. In thinking about it on and off for hours last week, my husband and I agreed that the risks you take, and pull off are phenomenal. I couldnt put my finger on what about the two parter was so different from most other television *and* film shows, all I could come up with was, well, Sheridan certainly had a big role in both parts but it was the type of role normally assigned to a female character. My husband I think articulated it better than I could: Sheridans role, while big, was passive (poignantly underscored by Zathras as Sheridans big role *is* in the future). And normally (although not always, reference the first two Aliens movies for instance, but then ironically the third) the passive role is always assigned to the female characters.

Another outstanding piece of work. And as always, many many thanks again for the mind stimulating originality we now expect from B5. Oh, and also as always, the actress & actors all did a fantastic job as they continue to pull off believably what you appear to have set out for them. It was fantastic to see Sinclair again, and that as time had passed, so has/had his character.

From: METonkin

okay – are we to assume that there are *two* jeffrey
sinclairs on minbar, so that when valen/sinclair is
writing himself a letter, he has to address it to
jeffrey *david* sinclair to make sure it’s delivered?
remember, folks, this is the ambassador from earth and
ranger numero uno! (of course, he may be a good old
southern boy who uses three names ala jim guy tucker – i
can say this, i’m from wva myself). then, the letter is waved
in front of our collective faces several times throughout
the wwe episodes, and i think – david is really a loaded name in
judeo/christian tradition: david the greatest king of
israel, and the messiah/christ as the son of david. so i make
another observation, which maybe others have made but
i’m new to the internet – *all* the main human characters
on b5 have biblically-derived names – john sheridan, susan(susanna)
ivanova, michael garibaldi, stephen franklin, and of course
our jeffrey david. even two human characters of lesser
importance – zack(zachary) allen and marcus(mark) cole – fit.
i tried to think of another show, sci fi, drama, comedy,
whatever, that the same could be said for and came up empty –
even that bastion of family values the waltons featured the non-biblical
olivia, jason, and erin. and no, i’m not the kind of person
who looks for conspiracies and pontificates on the number of stones in the
great pyramid of giza and thinks evolution is bunk – but this is
a coincidence? ( i won’t even start on the trinity of *the one*”.)

some other observations re valen/sinclair

(1) how come valen didn’t leave a “thou shalt not” to the
effect that one really should keep one’s gun ports closed
when meeting strangers? the entire earth/minbari war
would probably have been averted, but no capture of sinclair, no
discovery of his minbari soul, no epiphany for delenn, and no valen –
hundreds of thousands of human(especially) and minbari lives sacrificed
to keep the past and the presumed future intact – the narns weren’t
the only ones in a sense sold down the river.
(2) since delenn made no secret of the valen/sinclair identification
on the white star’s bridge, it presumably will be disseminated
among the minbari. how will they feel, knowing their anointed one
was “only human” , and it was, if viewed cynically, a *major* scam?
(3) finally, i’ve got to hand it to jms – when i think of
valen – holy prophet, great leader, founder of the gray council,
victor over the shadows – one day attending a gray council meeting
where someone is droning on and on, and he thinks “god – i wish i were
watching the one where lucy and ethel are making candy!” it’s like moses
playing miniature golf, or buddha bowling. i for one salute jms and thank
him for the laughs. it’s only too rare that a sci fi show’s more pompous
moments are punctured by humor(and they all have pompous moments, if we’re
honest), and to think that it’s the show’s creator doing the puncturing at
the expense of his own mythology!! to borrow from another mythology,
long may he live and prosper(or at least for the next two years – just
kidding!)

No kidding. Pomposity is a killer, and it’s a staple in TV SF. Maybe it’s just an occupational hazard in any genre where “saving the planet/civilization/galaxy” is a regular source of dramatic tension. JMS has done a nice job of letting off the worst of the hot air with humor and pleasantly eccentric characters. (Personally, I keep wondering if Lennier has any hobbies or minor vices. What DOES the guy do for fun?)

Dear JMS,

Well, now that the big shows are over and I have to settle in for a long summer of reruns ::painful sigh:: I thought I would ask you some questions about the show that don’t pertain to any episode, but rather interesting questions that maybe you can answer.

1. I remember in a past episode, Garibaldi mentioned his official military rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Now, Korwyn (sp?) is a Lieutenant, so what is the reason that Garibaldi outranks him on Babylon 5 because I know that in the military, a Lieutenant is higher than a Chief Warrant Officer.

2. What is Dr. Franklin’s rank? Is it Commander, because I noticed his shoulder rank insignia was the same as Cmdr Ivanova’s.

I know these are strange questions, but now that I’ve anaylized all the episodes and am sitting back for a long re-run summer ::another painful sigh:: I thought I’d poke around at some of the little tidbit facts of B5. Anyways, hope you answer these. Keep up the great work.

I was lurking around The Lurker’s Guide this morning and was reading your description of the five-year arc (written around 1993?). In it, you referenced what would become the “War Without End” episodes. You cited that episode’s ending as one which “will never have been seen before on television.” Now I for one was very excited and impressed and overwhelmed by WWE’s ending, but in your essay, were you citing something specific or simply the overall resolution of the plot?

Merely curious,

If Sheridan’s consciousness jumped into his future body on Centauri Prime, where was his “present” body? Where was his future consciousness when the time-jumping Sheridan was inhabiting the body?

We know when in time B4 went, but where in space did it go? Did it remain in the same place, which would imply that the Minbari base of operations in the last Shadow War was very close to B5’s curent location?

B5 has been described as being in “Neutral space,” but just how close is it to Minbari territory? It never seems to take Delenn long to find the Gray Council ship & get back to B5 afterward, but Sinclair spoke of having “come a long way” to get to B5 & move B4 through time. Of course, part of the “long way” he’s traveled could be his personal journey of self-discovery.

My two daughters, thirteen & almost eight, have gotten as addicted to B5 as I am. The younger one is at the stage where she hides her eyes (or at least pretends to) and says, “Is it over yet?” whenever there’s a love scene on TV. However, since the interrupted kiss in STV, she’s continually interupted each new episode with “Did they kiss yet?” or “When are they gonna kiss?” I began to look forward to the kiss as much to be able to watch the program in peace and quiet as to see the relationship advance.

After it finally happened, she came into the room while I was watching the tape and said “Is that the one with the kiss? Play the part with the kiss!” When I reminded her that she usually hated kissing scenes, she said, “But this is John and Delenn, and I’ve been waiting FOREVER!”

From: Rob Reed
Posted on: America Online

One thing that immediately jumped out at me at the revelation that Sinclair is/was Valen was, “Where did the knowledge and ideas that Valen so impressed upon Minbari society come from?”

Since by your admission, JMS, Sinclair spent his two years on Minbair doing more than watching “I Love Lennier” reruns (grin), it seems logical that Sinclair would have studied the formation of current Minbari society, and Valen’s hand in its formation — or at least as much as was known outside the Gray Council. Yet this knowledge is *precisely* what Sinclair took with him 1000 years into the past, and used to mold that society! Which in turn is what Sinclair presumably studied before he left…

Simply put, Valen’s concepts for the Gray Council are what Sinclair studied(?) in the time of B5. Sinclair travels to the time of the Gray Council’s founding, and becomes Valen. The source of knowledge is its own existence. Paradox.

So where did the *knowledge* for setting up the Gray Council and Minbari society come from?

Thanks in advance,

Truly, WWE I and II was a wonderful mini-epic within an epic. I especially loved the way Sinclair took a backseat to Sheridan until he disappeared, but then assumed leadership. Some (more) questions though:

(1) I’m testing my memory, but didn’t Zathras say, in B Squared, that he was out of (his) time and facing imminent death?

(2) If the metamorphosis device came from Epsilon 3, who, how, why (exactly) was it built?

(3) The old Minbari station that was detroyed by the Shadows 1000 years ago seemed very high tech. Why has current Minbari technology shown (relatively) so little progress over such an immense span of time?

JMS, a question:

In WWE, we get a look at the B5 galaxy 17 years in the future. Given that:

a) you’ve said that finding out *how* things happen is the interesting part of a story,

b) the B5 series moves more-or-less in “real time,” one year per season,

c) you’ve also said there will be no more time-travel in the series,

I was wondering if there was going to be some way we’d find out *how* things got to that point in the future. I can’t imagine that you’d set everything up by the end of the series and expect us to believe the galaxy remained static for 15 years.

I know better than to ask you for details :-) but can you give us a few general hints of how you’ll fill that 15-year-gap?

Ok, JMS, I admit it, I’m a terrible, rotten, good-for-nothing wimp.

I haven’t the stomach to survive through the season cliff-hanger and so I’m pulling the plug on the TV. I just can’t stand the suspense and tension that has been building for months.

I know you’ve said there may be *hope* for John and Delenn, and simultaneously you’ve suggested people stock up on kleenex, but my fevered overactive imagination is battling its own demons of the worst case scenario and I have this horrid image of Delenn and Sheridan estranged for months, years, or forever, leaving her to raise their child alone, or he pays attention to the boy and cold-heartedly ignores her. Would you believe I believe you’re capable of this?? Forgive me, Great Maker who plagued the Markeb to smitherines, I do.

Of course I love your writing and storytelling ENORMOUSLY or else I wouldn’t rave to everyone about you and send letters to the station. This is YOUR story and I’ve loved every minute up to now, but I do like my love stories to have happy endings (in seasons 4-20 to be exact). Life is hard enough as it is and fairy tales such as this have been one place of refreshment in a sometimes dark world.

Yet I know there’s a difference between me and stronger stomachs (they’ll probably live longer).

So, this wimp is thanking you for everything, holing up with my old B5 tapes and burying my head in the sand. Sometime after season 4 is under way (I’m sure you’ll get it), I’ll peek out and ask some of my other friends if it’s safe to come out.

Of course, I’ll keep praising your show and writing my letters. After all, life goes on and we got to keep the B5 world alive for those who have the stomach I don’t.

I love B5.But I’m telling you straight out if anything bad happens to their relationship.I’ll go back to watching Dr Quinn whos on another channel.Bruce B and Mira F. pulled me in with their growing love and their outcome, at least 11 other nurses in my profession said the same thing .because we live with death and disapointed love.Thats why we watch B5.You are gifted. But without Bruce and Mira its just another S/F to us.This isn’t a threat ,its just the truth. Also the kiss was wonderful but most disliked that it didn’t deal with the present.,and after Bruce’s and Delenns love story nothing else can match it.Delenn’s giving to much for Sheridan. It’s about time he did it for her.Thats one of the reason I didn’t watch the first year no romance and when your in your middle years, its great to see that love is still present.Thank you for the most wonderful show on tv.I’m been calling and writting so much my tv local that they know me by voice.I didn’t help save the show to lose Delenn and Sheridan in the long run.

JMS, after several hours of rest since putting up my “I’m A Wimp” message, I had a vision. I’m too nice, which is probably why I’m a wimp and why I get run over by those I’m nice to.

So I’ve decided to get stronger. :)

I respecfully say I’m not happy with what you’re up to. Life has taught all of us that every relationship goes through its bumpy times which can actually strengthen the bond, but mess with them more than a temporary set back (I’d say about a month?), and I’m outta here. I won’t take a permanent damage, turning them into a tragedy.

If you paid attention to any women around here, you’d find out that any one of us can tell you very quickly that John & Delenn have all the basic ingredients to see them through this coming storm and grow closer together with a stronger and deeper committed love and romantic relationship (I want to see more) that allows David to come and be fully welcomed as is proper. And if their love doesn’t survive, it won’t be their fault, rather someone will have failed to apply what he gave them. :)

We have seen that
Both are compassionate and wise people
both have taken the time to build a solid friendship and work together
both care about each other deeply (although I believe Delenn loves John more than he realizes)
both know the difficulties of leadership
and they have the benefit of:
Vorlon thought (Beauty in the Dark)
Minbari healing rituals
Brother Theo’s sermonette on forgiveness

And speaking of rebirth rituals, I’ll tell you my secret I haven’t told anyone: I really want to see this relationship survive, for myself, to remind myself that I can get past my own dark times. It doesn’t guarantee my relationship will survive, but rather that love survives and in time, I’ll survive. Of course I can find this message anywhere, not just with B5. But since I identify with Delenn very strongly I would really appreciate seeing them stay together through seasons 4, 5 and beyond.

I like this relationship and I love how you’ve cultivated it up to now. If you want to make a statement about creating loving relationships, please do so and stop toying with us by turning this love affair into tragedy. Toy with us somewhere else, but *please* leave John & Delenn alone! Let them be the shining beacon in the dark.

And I’m sorry, although I said I would continue supporting B5, I can’t be a hypocrite and tell people to watch this show if I’m not happy.

Of course, I know that you’ll do as you feel right and I understand your need to do that but at least we understand each other and respect each other’s position. And if necessary, we’ll go our separate ways, but I’d rather not. I like it here. I want to keep you as my friend and continue to enjoy the wonderfully crafted story you are unfolding before our eyes.

thanks

I agree with everything you have been saying, however, as I said in my previous message (if you read it) if you watch the season finale, if my predictions are right, you might another element play into this that might turn some heads and create some “difficulties” for John and Delenn

P.S. JMS- this is totally my opinion and my predictions, knowing your wonderful writing style and plot twists, I’m probably way off base with what I think.

1. Why were they called the Grey Council, and not the Light Council or the Dark Council? That title is characterisically ambiguous of JMS. Anything of it?

2. If the last great war was 1000 years ago, why was the Great Machine built only 500 years ago?

3. Zathras quotes a lot of Mimbari philosophy. Why is MIMBARI philosophy the center of this plot line? Or is this whole story really a Mimbari story told from the human perspective?

4. Is Londo’s keeper a Shadow or just one of those nasty little allies of the Shadows that remains after the war?

5. In the “alternate” future, Delenn implores Sheridan not to go to Za’ha’dum, yet in this time line he had obviously been and survived. Why doesn’t she want him to go?

Look, we realize you probably can’t answer a single one of these questions. Consider this a brain purge, and we’ll consider any reply you can give to be gravy.

Hello,
First I want to say that WWE was FANTASTIC!! I’m in danger of wearing out my tape of it, I’ve rewatched it so many times in the past week! I have always loved the character of Jeffrey Sinclair and you almost lost me as a viewer when he left at the end of the first season. I watched sporadically during the second season, and then you won me back with the last four episodes of the second season. I”ve enjoyed all of the third season, but WWE was an utter delight!!!! I was glued to the TV!
The only problem was….this deserved so much more attention. I think you could have given it four hours instead of two and still not done it justice. The action moved so fast that you had to sacrifice some of the character interaction. I would all but sell my soul to see have gotten to see more between Delenn and Sinclair. You gave us one short scene with them speaking in Minbari and then in English – and each sentance was extremely well crafted to say a lot in a few words (beautiful deliver by both actors) BUT….I was left feeling desperate for more!!! There had to be so much going on in Sinclair’s head, I wish we could have heard him express it more. Especially with Delenn who is the one person who would most likely understand. I would have loved to hear more of how he feels about sacrificing himself and his identity to be reborn as Valen, and I would have liked to hear more of what Delenn feels about it. I got the sense her feelings were mixed, awe and respect for who he will become, mixed with sorrow for the loss of her friend. I keep thinking about what she must be feeling, to know, and not be able to tell anyone, that this man will become the greatest hero her people have ever known. Can you imagine what it felt like to watch him grow and develop, to see the slow maturing of Valen within Jeffrey Sinclair, to be a friend to someone she was brought up to consider just short of being a God? To finally look into his eyes and see Valen? It must have been incredibly emotional for her…and I felt we were slighted by not getting more exploration of it.
And then there’s Sheridan and his relationship with Delenn and Sinclair. It would have been good to give him more time to know Sinclair. And to have him drawn in sooner to understand what Sinclair’s role is and what his own is. And the goodbyes were far too eclipsed. Ivanova and Marcus left without even *saying* goodbye to Sinclair. And there should have been more between Delenn and Sinclair. I did like the handshake between the two men, that was well-done.
But still….this would have gone from be oustanding to being incredible drama if we had been allowed to see deeper into the hearts and minds of the characters.
Or maybe I”m just itching to see more of Sinclair. I”m already in withdrawal. I MISS him!!!!!!!!
*sigh*

You expressed my sentiments exactly.

While the entire B5 storyline is intriguing and keeps you hooked, the one thing that kept me watching more than anything was watching the relationship grow. The fact that it took the good part of two years to see it get to this point is bad enough, but to see it torn down in a heartbeat is almost too much. Unfortunately, that scenario plays itself out too many times in real life.

I, too, am tempted to forget about B5 if their separation does come to pass, but I am too addicted to the show to just stop watching it cold turkey. Besides, there may be something in the next two seasons which will bode well for our favorite couple. We must have hope…….

“Syndicated Shows” is a VERY broad category that includes game shows (like “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune”), talk shows (like Oprah and Ricki Lake), “magazine” shows (like “Hard Copy”) and a variety of other things. In that light, it’s no surprise that B5 isn’t at the top. It never is.

On the other hand, JMS was on the LA radio show “Hour 25″ Friday night, and he said they were just waiting for WB to double-check its number crunching, and that “it would take an act of God” to de-rail the renewal at this point. (I did get that quote right, didn’t I?)

I would like to ask JMS about the process of writing the scripts.

Does each character and race have pre-ordained characteristics which you attribute to them or do they develop though the writing process? In particular I ask in relation to the episode “Messages from Earth” which has just been broadcast in the UK. This episode highlights the greater emotional stability of the more “mature” race of minbari but also their greater “conservatism” and lower levels of innervation. This is a true reflection of societies but is this all planned in advance or does it develop as the script advances?

I would also like to put in a plee for the development of the relationship between Marcus and Ivanova. Do I detect a Beatrice and Benedick [Much Ado About Nothing] in the making? That should amuse us for many an hour!

Many thanks for such a quality show.

Subj: Anna’s in the Shower …
Date: 96-06-03 16:07:35 EDT
From: METonkin
Posted on: America Online

The title of this posting, in case anyone doesn’t know, refers to the most infamous betrayal
of a program’s plot integrity in TV history – the “Dallas” episode in which a character was
brought back from the dead by the ploy of having everything that had occurred since that
character’s death turn out to have happened only as a dream. (This same plot device was
brilliantly spoofed in the final episode of “Newhart”.)

I happen to believe that JMS plays fair with the viewers and foreshadows what is going to
occur in a manner that makes sense (time travel chicken-or-the-egg paradoxes not
withstanding – when *did* Sinclair/Valen write the letter to himself, since he apparently
took it back to the past with him?). I also believe that JMS is at heart a romantic who
wants at least a reasonably happy ending for B5’s story – I say reasonably happy because
he is also a realist who knows that “happily ever after” is a characteristic of the most unreal
fairy tales(there are always more battles against the darkness, remember), and at the same
time he does not want to betray his audience (betrayal is one of “the sins of the wolf”, after
all.) To wit:

“Okay, everybody who thought I was going to have our heroes fight a war for two whole
years or so, and then *lose it*…a major dramatic disappointment to say the least…raise
your hands. ” – JMS on an objection that having Londo reveal that the Shadow War was
won by the Conspiracy of Light was a spoiler.

Don’t you think the same premise applies to the entire John-Delenn-Anna question? I do
not believe that JMS is going to let our hero and heroine part forever, regardless as to who
is at the door of John’s quarters, though he(JMS) probably is going to shake things up a
bit. Here are my reasons, for what they’re worth, and assuming that the woman at the door
is in fact Anna Sheridan (thanks to the Lurker synopses for some help):

(1) A loving wife, who knows that her husband believes her to be dead for several years,
would not stage a surprise comeback by popping into his room in the middle of the night
and jumping into bed with him as he lies sleeping (let’s not go in to sleeping with whom,
but the possibility of a new woman in John’s life would surely have occurred to Anna)!
Shock *can* kill, whether it’s a good shock or a painful one. Therefore this is not Anna as
John knew her during their years together. Also, didn’t the episode “A Race through Dark
Places” establish that the method of access to the captain’s quarters was by card? How
would Anna get a card without some assistance, and assistance from whom? Morden does
appear in this episode according to the scant information available, by the way.

(2) In “In the Shadow of Z’ha’dum” , when Delenn and Kosh are telling Sheridan about
the fate of the Icarus, Anna’s ship, Delenn tells John, that

“Once awakened, the Shadows could not allow them to leave in case they
would warn others. Those who would not serve were killed.”

With those words, Delenn does in fact inform John that there may have been survivors of
the expedition. While she may have withheld more detailed information from him, she did
at that time tell him that there was at least a possibility that Anna was still alive. Delenn’s
strong reaction at the appearance of Anna at the door strongly suggests that she(Delenn)
did not *know* that Anna was a survivor.

(3) Consider Delenn’s attitude when she and John meet in the prison cell on Centauri
Prime, when she believes they are moments from their deaths. She is very much a woman
who both loves her man and who *knows* that she is loved in return. There is no
question of a need for forgiveness or reconciliation in what she says to him, so any
estrangement or misunderstanding had been resolved long ago.

My gratitude to all — you, cast, crew and technical folk for a really fine show.

Rob — I had a similar thought on a much more mundane level — When Sinclair is getting ready to go back in time, he has the letter from himself/Valen to himselv/Sinclair in his hand and I thought — now he never has to write it, it just keeps going forward and backward in time.

In one of the better star trek movies, kirk sells his antique glasses in the “past” , thus, mccoy can later buy them as ‘antiques’ and give them as a gift to kirk, who can take them back into the past etc.

And then there’s the one about kyle and my son john…

Just wanted to say that I had the idea to pitch a script to you, JMS, during the 2nd season.

Your plot line moved ahead far faster than I could foresee, so the idea(s) became obsolete.

I’ve given up on the idea, but the experience was worth it, bashing through the writer’s block and working my brain off to come up with a good, tight story line….

Best of luck!!

But. . .if Sinclair/Valen uses the letter he got in 2260 as the one he put in the box, then every time the letter is received it should be one thousand years older than the last time, right? But if this is all a loop, then EVERYTHING should be EXACTLY the same everytime he opens the box; including the age of the letter. So Sinclair/Valen must re-write the letter everytime. He must use some of that new-fangled Minbari power to get the handwriting exactly identical.

By the same logic, Captain Kirk’s glasses in Star Trek II are not the same one’s he gives to the antique shop owner in Star Trek IV. Well, okay, they are, but not the EXACT same pair.

This is why I choose not to travel through time.

From: RHallHood
Posted on: America Online

Forgive me if this has already been asked and answered, but I’m new here…

Whatever happened to G’Kar’s aide Na’Toth? She had some terrific moments
during the first season (especially in “The Parliament of Dreams”), then the
actress playing her backed out of the role. I remember reading somewhere
that you decided to replace the actress rather than eliminate the character
because Na’Toth “possessed an important piece of information.” We saw the
“new” Na’Toth for something like five minutes of screen time during all of the
second season. Then, she pulled a Keyser Soze and hasn’t been mentioned
since — the only character featured in the opening credits sequence who hasn’t
been given a proper send-off. Will we ever find out where she went or what
happened to her?

With the recent postings about adding more women to the show, let me
cast my vote for the return of Na’Toth! (With or without the original actress.)

Looking forward to that 4th Season,

RHallHood

IMO, Babylon 5 does very well in this dept. of characters and their “strengths”. Peoples is peoples, as I always say. There are strong male characters and there are strong female characters but as it is in reality, they ALL carry their own baggage of guilt and faults. Sheridan is a bit of a loose cannon; Garibaldi is a recovering alcoholic; Ivanova has her ghosts; Franklin is an addict; Talia, even though she isn’t with the show anymore, gee, I think she was quite strong (as Talia One) and other than her being with PsiCorp, I can’t think of anything particularly problematic with her.. Lyta Alexander is a strong character. WHAT we are missing is another VORLON!

Posted on: America Online

To Jms
I would like to thank you for the way that you have handled religion with dignity and respect. I was, and still am a big Sci fi fan. But as I got more involved in my Christian faith I saw how many Sci fi writers are hostile to any kind of faith that is not “new or alternative.” Over the last couple of years of Star Trek, the yuppie generation, I saw many episodes based on the Book of Revelation, spins that, in a sense told its viewers that religion was baaaaad and new thinking was gooood!! It was hurtful in the sense that people who read the Bible saw the flaws and twists of the story, but for people whose only exposure to this type of thing is the tube, it underscored the prevailing media hype that religion is bad, and that the people involved in religion are fanatics. The hypocrisy of this of course is that if some form of Indian or ethnic religion came up, people were falling over themselves in “embracing it”. This kind of writing turned me off from TV Sci fi and I had just about given up on any such shows till your show came about.

It is not necessary to embrace one form of religion in order to treat all religion with respect. In one of your early episodes, Commander Sinclair participated in a Minbari service. Afterwards, Delenn wanted to know about earth’s religion. I waited and held my breath til, I think, the last scene when Sinclair brought Delenn to a large room filled with leaders of many of the earth’s faith. No one faith was held over the other, but each faith was treated with respect and more importantly, none was excluded. Another example is Ivanova and how she deals with her Jewish faith. As a Christian, I have always felt you have to be a little Jewish to understand the Christian faith, and I enjoyed the Rabbi that came to visit her after her fathers death. Death happens, and how we deal with it matters. To say that I enjoyed the visiting monks would be and understatement. One of the many questions that I ask myself is where will the church of Jesus Christ be in the future. The Bible says that we do not know when the end will come (Mark 13:32 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.) That day could come tomorrow or 2000 years from now, we don’t know. But the Monks had a Mission, to see how Jesus Christ may be experienced in other ways or worlds. The episode dealing with the death of the young monk, his troubled past, the forgiveness granted him before and after he learns of his past, and the hard forgiveness granted to the young monks killer left tears in my eyes and summed up my own personal mission statement (Luke 4:18-19 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”)

It would be nice to think that in the future we could solve all of our problems with a fast space ship, human knowledge, and, of course, a replacator. But I don’t think so. As long as there is man, there will be pain, and as long as there is pain there will be a need for faith and forgiveness. I have read that you have said that this show is not about the war, it is about the people involved in that war. I cried the night that G’Kar read and prayed from his holy book, with the last of the candle light dimming, the tears falling, and the images of his dying world playing in his head. I have been there, many times, praying for people without hope and hearing Christ’s words “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Thank you,
Peter B.

This is my 1st night online and I am thrilled to find B5 chats, messages, and that you personally take the time to talk with viewers. I LOVE B5, I did not watch the 1st season, as I found the characters had to believe, esp. Lando. I was a big Trek fan and the difference was hard to take. Now I regret missing those founding episodes. The characters are now so alive, especially Delenn. I find her a great role model. The strength and conviction she displays is palpable.. You have made these characters someone we like and care about. The story I find now is more real and gritty than Trek. Trek was a perfect world. A world B5 would like to eventually make. By watching characters like Sheridan, I hope that we will learn to overcome our problems and get through the times I see ahead of us. Star Trek and Gene R. gave us hope for a future of peace. B5 will show us how to get there. Congratulations ! Keep up the great work. Please tell Mira Furlan how much I, as a mother, appreciate her performance of Delenn.

Thanks, Stacy

Never though I’d see the day when I’d prefer to stay home and watch a tv show than go out to a movie, but there may be one or two movie plots per year than come close to being as good as one episode of B5. Someone posted in here that Sheridan lacks the comanding presence that Sinclair had. I must say that I disagree. Sheridan is the right man at the right time. He always seems to know what to do or at least guesses right. He reminds me of Captain Kirk but better.

I like Sinclair too. After all, he only helped win the war 1000 years ago and changed Minbar and the rest of the universe forever. It would be difficult for Sheridan to come close to this list of accomplishments although leading the war against the Shadows and winning will assure that Valens work goes on.

Delenn and Sheridan finally kissed, however, there will be another first kiss. Delenn has not yet kissed Sheridan for the first time. It should prove interesting.

JMS there have been alot of questions asking about how long have you known about Sinclair/Valen as well as other questions that have come up recently about what is going on behind the scenes and in your head. So I would like to ask you to consider writting a book after the series is completed to let us know how you did it.

Thanks for making TV fun again.

Dear Mr. Straczynski,

I’ve been thinking about Kosh’s death and I think I’ve made some connections. Let me start at the beginning. Kosh arrives at B5 in the pilot only to fall victim to a failed assassination plot. It seems that Takashima had something to do with it. She seemed to have an agenda for another power, yet worked for Earth Force- kind of like Garabaldi’s original sidekick. Kosh never made any major moves until he agreed to Sheridan’s request to fight the Shadows.
QUESTIONS-
1) Were Takashima and Garabaldi’s sidekick working for the Shadows via Clark?

2) Was the assassin attempt on Kosh the signal to him that the Shadows were back?

3) Did the Shadows try to knock off Kosh to start the intergalactic conflict they wanted?

4) When that failed, they killed Santiago to get Clark in power and sent Morden to try to raise hell with someone else?

B5 is a HUGE!!!! hit in the UK. It is carried in prime time on a major channel. They run the episodes in order without interruptions over a 22 week period. And, the stations support the show with promotions and advertising.

In England, there are a number of books and videos dedicated to B5. They can also buy videos of all the past season episodes.

Guess you can’t blame JMS for paying them a visit.

I missed the first season of B5, falling victim to a combination of Paramount propaganda and bad B5 promos (oh, there’s the guy who plays Cmdr. Tomaluk dressed as a giant lizard, threatening to destroy everyone, ho-hum). That changed when I happened upon a repeat of “Believers” and went *whoa*. Now, after having become thoroughly addicted over the past 1-1/2 years, I’ve been trying to catch up on what I (stupidly) missed. I’ve just started accessing the Lurker’s Guide, & after reading about “Parliment of Dreams”, a question occurred to me: I guessed (as have most others) that Londo didn’t see Kosh in “The Fall of Night” because the Vorlons never visited the Centauri, *but*, did the Vorlons ever visit the Xon? As a sidebar, could this be an example of Chekovian writing?

I would say keep up the good work, but I’ve read your comments about increasing the “wham” factor from ~50% of episodes this year to ~75% year 4 and 100% year 5, and I’m afraid my head will explode come next February. Oh well…keep up the good work, and send sponges!

Great Maker,

A while back you really opened my eyes as to the constraints put upon you as a writer in that once the “chapter” is written, ya can’t go back and change it. Secondly since characters and arc turns put forward in that “chapter” may take an unexpected turn as a result actors leaving and your own feelings of where the story should go. But since there is no going back you sometimes just have to cover your tracks as best as you can and move on. Hope that paraphases you well enough.

Now for the question: You foreshadowed a great deal of what was to come in season 1 and i assume most of those cards are out on the table, especially after wwe1/2. With relation to B4, Valen, Sinclair what was the original arc cira. B^2? You have caused me many sleepness nights, wondering how the hell you can foreshadow so much and then change commander but still pull it off (to the casual viewer) that all this was planned.

Namely:

1) was sinclair in the original arc supposed to be Valen?

2) was B4 orignally planned to be moved back 1000 years?

3) was the chysilis machine always intended to have come from Epsilon 3?

4) was this always setup as the “backdoor” for Sinclair’s character, if so will you someday write a thesis on how such a 5-year arc type show can happen giving case examples of “before”/”after” shots. (Yes i know, one major project to think about at a time).

Please understand that i’m just amazed that anyone can have the creative ability to pull this “arc turn” off so seamlessly. Being a computer programmer, i sure wish i could change my program so may times in development without rewriting existing code…. which is why your technique/ability is so foreign to me.

Great Maker,

You’ve posted earlier that in “our sheridan” “popped” into the future sheridan’s body and the future sheridan will wake up a bit confused after the popout. Since the popin was unobserved by anyone (young sheridan in/old sheridan off to the side), but the pop out was visible by all as a disappearence, how does the future sheridan come back?

I assume we’ll get to see the 17 year future somewhere in year 5, at least it will be easier for you thread together that one than wwe1/2 since there were less scenes and actors to line up. Or is this another one of your “a possible future” … yehh sure smells like a “make their head spin” gift.

Great Maker,

It was never shown or implied whether B5 command is aware of the information given to Keffer on how to detect shadow ships in hyperspace. We know Keffer received the sensor logs from the other pilot but thats all history now. That seems like too important an intellegence weapon to be a one ep throwaway.

You see one of the many things i hated in Trek was all cool new technologies that were found, used in one ep and never heard of again. You’d think that they would become part of tool kit on future eps.

Great Maker,

We know some vorlon tech has gone into the white star, but does it also posses the “Vorlon shadow Killer” knowledge/technolgy? I know you said that one of factor contributing to the vorlon victory was the element of surprise but still they were using a totally different offensive strategy that any other race. Instead of zap/cut/blow, they appeared to work like fire-ants/bees imobalizing the ships in an “organic” sort of way. BTW, a very good alien scene.

Contrats on Renewal …. i just knew it would happen. Life can’t be that unfair.

jms—
Congrats on the 4th season pick-up…I just read about it and my heart is racing for joy. Having been on mini-b5 withdraw (was in Ireland for 2 weeks and only got to see small portions of old shows–poor scheduling on my part), I was happy to get home and see Part 2…waiting 2 weeks for the 2nd part was very painful.

One question I have tho—when I was in Ireland I saw B5 episode tapes on sale but they were in the European format (I was hoping they would be universal format and i would have bought out the store and ordered the others they did not have)…….The question is, why do they get them and we don’t????? Please tell me that maybe, just maybe, they will become available here also…

Thanx for a great 3 years and here’s looking forward to the next 2.

Congrats again

They help me survive re-run season. Please, sir, may I have some more? (to quote poor Oliver Twist) I also hope that after the 5-year arc is complete, you will take the time to give us the master’s story…from conception through completion. Dear JMS,

At the risk of being repetitive, thank you for your herculean efforts to bring to television one of the most engrossing dramas that has been broadcast in years. The characters are multidimensional, their interactions seem genuine and the dialogue is fresh and witty. The broad story arc is wonderful and the individual episodes that gradually reveal the arc are uniformly superb.

I would like to know if an when the Babylon 5 episodes from Seasons 1 through 3 will be released in literary form. I hope that it will be soon.

I would also like to know if and when the episodes that have been broadcast will be available for sale on videotape or (preferably) laser disk. Again, I hope that it will be soon.

Thank you again.

JMS is in England at a convention there (lucky dog), and that is why he has been absent from here for some time. Word of renewel came from John Copeland (aka Pigdog13), producer of Babylon 5. He dropped in here, and in the chat room, as soon as he could after recieving word. After he got offline with us he faxed the good news to JMS, he wanted to let us know as soon as possable. By all accounts I have read, JMS anounced the renewel at the convention the next day. By the time he got the fax it must have been sometime around three in the morning there, and I expect he was fast asleep after a hard day of autograph signing and general partying.

I vouch for Pigdog being John Copeland, it has been confirmed to me by other people whom I trust. By the way, I take nobody’s word on who they say they are online without confirmation. So, there it is. The anouncment came from the top dog, so to speak, right after JMS himself.

Speculating about B5 is fun, isn’t it? I know the show has been a godsend to me just now, as it has been a welcome distraction from some problems in my life. I appreciate the people-orientation of the show – B5’s not just fancy computer simulations, but presents characters we can care about, hate, root for, that intrigue us…

On a more practical level, I doubt that the show’s budget would allow Melissa Gilbert to
become a regular – JMS has been quoted as saying that he brings in each episode under
budget, and Gilbert’s salary and billing would have to be the equivalent of Bruce
Boxleitner’s – she has starred on two network series after all.

I suspect that we will see a Shadow-controlled Anna attempt to destroy Sheridan. She will
of course be stopped somehow, perhaps by Delenn killing her to protect John, or Anna
may escape and head back to Z’ha’dum. John is temporarily crazed by grief and guilt
(why didn’t he go to Z’ha’dum to look for Anna when he first learned that there might be
survivors of the Icarus?) and furious with Delenn – for withholding information, or for
killing Anna to protect him, or for whatever reason – remember, guilt and grief are a lethal
mixture that can cause irrational behavior and both emotions are often projected onto
others. John then goes haring off to Z’ha’dum looking for vengeance and for relief from his
guilt. The loss of Anna all over again along with her corruption by the Shadows would be
quite a price for John to pay, as would the cost to Delenn if she were partly responsible for that
loss while saving John’s life. Both fit nicely into the redemption by suffering theme JMS
is playing for us.

Relief hardly begins to say how I feel. Garibaldi will be back. Delenn and John will have their chance. G’Kar and Lando will bicker and fight and some how find a common link. We have ‘our’ show one more year. It really makes me wonder why we have had to fight so hard for such a good show.
Europe, especially England appreciates this kind of program. Why do so many Americans dismiss SciFi. It is their future. Most Americans don’t seem to want to think. When you consider a show, Seinfeld, is proud about the fact that it is about nothing.
I admit I have watched it at times, and other senseless programing but rarely. It’s time that a drama in the SciFi vein get the recognition that it deserves. It is also time that those that hunger for SciFi do not have to accept low quality programing.
I’ll get off my soap box. I’m just really thankful for JMS, thank you sir, for the wonderful imagination and the strength to push it through and fight to keep it on the air.

Thank You

The future Sheridan didn’t dissapear. If you watch it again you’ll see that he starts convulsing, then very briefly, it looks like a double exposure of Sheridan. I think this was supposed to show us that he was leaving that “other” Sheridan. But I don’t think that part was visable to the others. And the future Sheridan is still there at the end of the scene.

Maybe you’ve got a headache, Tibor, but I also think you’ve got it right. Sinclair was born on earth, then changed to Valen as he goes back in time, and then dies LONG before his birth. Hi!
I was wondering what Rathenn and the Rangers called Sinclair. It sounded like “Enteel-za” – I was wondering if it is some kind of nickname or a title and what it means. Is it just Minbari language for “Ranger One” or “Ambassador” or does it have a special meaning. It was neat though.
But I’m incredibly partial to Sinclair regardless. I do wish we could have seen more of his time on Minbar and the training of the Rangers. How about giving us some flashbacks, maybe from MArcus’ point of view – I’d love to see his meeting with Sinclair and how Sinclair won such obvious and intense respect from him. And do you think we’ll ever get to see what happens to Valen and Zathras? Maybe in novel form if not on the show?? PLEASE!

The following segment was clipped from the Lurker’s Guide. It’s from the “JMS Speaks” section on the guide page for “A Late Delivery from Avalon”. It was in relation to a question that was asked about Marcus’ conversation with the doctor about the Ranger pin.

<<The name of the Ranger pin is spelled Isil’zha.
The Minbari term for Ranger One, btw, is Entil’zha.
Z’ha’dum is where the shadows live. Odd, that reversal…. >>

Cryptic as always… By the way, he also has said this about that conversation:

<<There’s a small clue about the third age in the discussion between Marcus and Franklin about the ranger pin. I mean, it’s really pretty blatant.>>

Makes me think Ranger One is not a literal translation but an honorific.
if “z’ha” = darkness, Z’ha’dum could mean ‘place of darkness or somesuch’, and “Entil’zha” , ‘against darkness’ ?

But– there isn’t a second apostrophe in the zha of Entil’zha, like in Z’ha’dum — I bet the Minbari are particular about how they modify their word stems. Could be two totally different words.

P.S. thanks for the updates from the web, Dave.

Thank you again for producing a television show that stimulates the imagination, promotes ideas and generates intelligent discussion. This is something that most producers of tv programming forget – the audience is aware of what they’re watching – and we’re much more intelligent than most tv execs give us credit for. I said I wasn’t going to even try to figure out the time travel scheme in “War Without End,” but I’ve changed my mind. Sorry, but it doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t know much about science fiction, but it seems to me that there had to be some starting place for Sinclair/Valen.

Sinclair/Valen couldn’t have started in the previous (Minbari) life, because Sinclair hadn’t yet been born to return as Valen.

But it couldn’t have started in Sinclair’s era, either, because all of what is known to be true is based on the fact that Babylon 4 was transported to the past by Sinclair, and Sinclair hasn’t done that yet by the opening of the 2-part episode.

I liked “War Without End” a lot when I saw it, but the more I think about it, the less it holds up under scrutiny.

Time travel is too confusing. I really think it can’t be done, and don’t like episodes or shows that use it. Alternate universes I can handle more, since if you change them, you are not changing your past or your original/home universe, but rather you are affecting someone elses present. Note, in essence, with alternate universes, you are never entering into anyones past, or future, but always the present. The other universe might have similarities with what you believe to be in your past, or similarities to what you may think to be the future, but no matter what you do, it will not affect the universe that you came from. (That universe will still exist and continue. It will think that you have disappeared for a while, if not forever).

This is only if you restrict it to the “must be a begining” idea, which it clearly does not subscribe to.
I know it’s odd, but it’s time travel, so it should be odd. But the very definition of a loop says it doesn’t have either a begining nor an end. There wasn’t a “first time”, any more than there will be a “last time”, for this to be it would mean that the loop obeys some form of time separate from our time, which applies to only the loop.
Obviously, since there doesn’t appear to be any “first time” artifacts in WWE, then the loop artifact works.

With all the other excitement of WWE, it just occured to me: Up until now time elapsed in the story has kept pace with the seasons it’s been on. But in WWE, we see 17 years into the future. If we’re to see the whole story in the 5-year arc, does that mean we’re going to be taking big leaps in time through the next 2 seasons?

And, are we talking about 1000 years back in Earth years or Minbari years?

Think about this — Sinclair will be in an endless time loop — going back 1000 years, dying, being born 950 years later, traveling back a 1000 years, being born 950 years later . . . .

<<I said I wasn’t going to even try to figure out the time travel scheme in “War Without End,” but I’ve changed my mind. Sorry, but it doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t know much about science fiction, but it seems to me that there had to be some starting place for Sinclair/Valen.

Sinclair/Valen couldn’t have started in the previous (Minbari) life, because Sinclair hadn’t yet been born to return as Valen.>>

There is a starting point for Sinclair – it was back when he was born on Earth however many years ago. Later, he was taken 1000 years back in time and lived a normal Minbari lifespan during that time and then died. Those are the starting and ending times.

<<But it couldn’t have started in Sinclair’s era, either, because all of what is known to be true is based on the fact that Babylon 4 was transported to the past by Sinclair, and Sinclair hasn’t done that yet by the opening of the 2-part episode.>>

But he HAD. Only he didn’t know it yet. You’re right that there had to be a beginning to the loop, and I’m sure the “first one” to set things up for Sinclair was related to the folks who built the machine.

<<Time travel is too confusing. I really think it can’t be done, and don’t like episodes or shows that use it. Alternate universes I can handle more, since if you change them, you are not changing your past or your original/home universe, but rather you are affecting someone elses present. Note, in essence, with alternate universes, you are never entering into anyones past, or future, but always the present.>>

You’re making the same assumption that I see just about everyone else making who talks about this. Who said that what happened in WWE was about people changing the past? I think what we saw was someone changing their future. I don’t think the genesis of this “time loop” was 2260, 2258 or 2254. I think it was all planned over 1000 years ago. Let me explain:

Over 1000 years ago the war was going on between the forces of light (Vorlons, other First Ones and Minbari) and the Shadows. Now we know from what we’ve already seen it’s always seemed to me that the Vorlons had some ability to see into the future. We’ve also seen that some of the lesser races had a limited ability to do this as well (at least in some of their members), but I think the Vorlons have this *much* stronger. Perhaps some of the other First Ones do as well. Anyway, lets say that either the Vorlons or one of the other First Ones is peering into the future and sees that things are not going to go well for them in this war. They see that even if they win this time, when the Shadows come back they will overpower them. Not a very good vision of the future but as we’ve heard with other visions, they usually represent a “possible” future.

So these First Ones start looking deeper and deeper into the possible futures to see how they could manage to avoid that fate. Eventually they come accross the makings of a possible self-sustaining time loop involving one of the Babylon stations. This must be a rare find! How many possible time loops could actually sustain themselves over and over and over? But here they had the makings of one! They also see this as a way of breaking away from that vision of their defeat that they see.

So they commit themselves to building a great machine under the surface of the planet that the future Babylon stations will orbit, to be used in sending one of them back in time. After all, do you think the machine is just there by coincidence? Of all the other places it could have been built? Do you think it was just coincidence that the machine had the capability to create a time distortion field big enough to send something as big as B4 1000 years back into time? Or that it had all the other equipment that was needed (time stabilizers, Triluminaries, chrysalis machine)? Or that it was made just powerfull enough to pull this off? (remember it was taking all of Drall’s strength to make the machine do this) No. These weren’t coincidences because this is exactly what the machine was built for.

Anyway, the first time this time loop occurred the Vorlons (or other First Ones) would have had to have helped it along. Perhaps one of them took the role of Valen (or a Valen type person) to help shape Minbari society in the way it needed to be, and to leave behind prophecies. Then the first time B4 arrived back then, they would have had to explain to Sinclair that *he* was to take the role of Valen and what he had to do to make sure the loop never broke down. Maybe they even secretly hung around at times when too much chance came into play to make sure that things went as planned.

There are other possibilities too, but what I’m trying to point out here is that the designers of this time loop may have actually been changing the future (from their perspective) and not the past. That’s the way I see all this as happening. This way avoids much of the paradox that comes about when you talk about changing the past. Sure, you could talk about how this changed the outcome of the last war, but that’s not the past for the people who set this up – it’s the future.

Ah, I don’t buy this. There’s no need for a vorlon Valen. Valen appeared with B4.
There’s no need to worry about the loop “breaking down”, because like any other event, the events only transpire once. How many times did B4 get pulled backwards in time? Once, when it went to help out in the Old War. How many times does Sinclair become Valen? Once, when he does.

The only way you could think of a loop happening over and over is to assume a position outside of the space/time the loop exists in. Other wise, you’re traveling forward in time one second per second, just like everyone else.

Very interesting… perhaps there is a way out of the linear endless loop problem. If Valen returns to (and dies in) a time-frame within Sinclair’s normal lifetime, all seems right with the universe. Question then becomes – if Valen does return to present day, will the aging effect kill him or did the Minbari transformation solve that problem.

Are we borrowing a little from Jewish Theology here? The last book of the Old Testament sets down a blessing or a curse which many orthodox Jews, (my downstairs neighbor for one) believe in. On High holidays they set a place for Elijah at the Passover (Seder) dinner and at Friday night Sabbath (Shabbat) dinners. Malachi 4:5-6 “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse.”

Congrats on season 4!!!!!!!!
I was just rewatching Passing Through the Gethsmane Stone and noticed more the scenes with Lyta, specifically the changes in her antomy mentioned by Dr. Franklin, and her scene with Kosh at the very end of the episode. Up to now none of this has seeminly been explained or paid off as to what the vorlons have done to her or what or function with them really is and I was wondering is this something that will be coming up in season 4 or be tied up with everything else you are clearing up by the end of this season. Just curious because I liked her appearances so far and am hoping she’ll end up as a regular in season 4.
Oh by the way I think the first four episodes of this season hold up much better than I thought originally, I just think some people or myself were disappointed that they were not as arc heavy coming off the heals off the final four of season two. On rewatching without the expectation that they will be arc episodes, but instead more individual character episodes they satisfy much better.

I don’t know if this has been discussed previously, I’ve looked in the old jms logs w/out finding much. I’m intrigued by the idea that Sinclair was a Jesuit, which I only recently learned.

Well, I’m not JMS but I think I can answer this. Yes, that was D-Day aka Bruce McGill as Major Ryan.
Also, Kim Miyori, who played Captain Hiroshi, played a doctor on St. Elsewhere (I can’t remember her character’s name but I think it was Dr. Kim. Her character committed suicide on the show). So if Stephan Furst had been in that episode he would have met alumni of Animal House and St. Elsewhere.

Alfred Bester produced a landmark novel on Psi (“esper”) culture, “The Demolished Man”. Another bit of writing he’s responsible for (and liked to deny despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary) was the following quatrain, written for a comic book in the 1940’s-

“In brightest Day, In darkest Night
No evil shall escape my sight
Let all who worship evil’s might

The helmet removals are in two completely separate scenes.

In “Babylon Squared,” we see The One walk up to Zathras, but do not see him/her removing the helmet from the suit. At the end of the show, in the tag, we see a figure in a space suit turn away from having just left an airlock. The figure removes his helmet and we see that it is an older Sinclair with a scar on his cheek. Delenn (off camera) then tells him that it’s time to go. In the process, we the audience have been led to believe that the figure in the space suit that approaches Zathras is the same one that we see later on standing outside the airlock — i.e. that it is Sinclair.

In “War Without End, Part 2,” we see a little more of the scene with The One and Zathras — just enough more that we get to see the figure remove the helmet from the suit and it turns out to be Delenn! Then we do a “jump cut” to the scene where old Sinclair removes HIS helmet just outside the airlock (presumably a little later, since Delenn has had the time to get out of her suit and walk to where Sinclair is). Only in WWE2 do we realize that our original impression was wrong — there were TWO people in space suits, and the one who kept appearing and disappearing in “Babylon Squared” was never Sinclair at all, but instead was Delenn!

Does this make it any clearer?

JMS:

Is there any chance that WB would consider rerunning the program shown a couple of years
ago that was hosted by Walter Koenig that gave a “behind the scenes” look at B5? If not,
is there any plans on making it available via the Fan Club?

I missed watching it, the Boston area has always had a big problem with B5 and promotion. Someone managed to tape only a small portion of it and I got to watch that, but I would like to
see the whole show. Looked great!

David Bassom did a wonderful job on the CREATING BABYLON 5 and the A-Z OF BABYLON 5
books.

Thanks for the show and congrats on renewal.

HELP!

WPHL-17 out of Philidelphia will stop showing B5 on 3 Nov 96. This means that alot of us who live in the DelMarVa Pennisula will not get to see seasons 4 (and hopefully 5!) unless some station in our area will pick it up. Word from Customer Relations at WPHL is that another PA station will pick it up, but none of those broadcast to the DelMarVa area. Please help. If anyone is aware of another station in the DelMarVa area that is going to pick it up please post it.

I’m hooked. What am I going to do without my weekly dose of Garibaldi? (And yes I do have a life outside of tv!) What’s going to happen in the Great War? Who’s going to be the new Vorlon Ambassitor? I need my B5 back!!!!!! AAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

JMS has previously stated that Na’Toth was killed in the bombing of Narn… Her character, he said, was created mainly to serve as someone to whom G’kar could privately voice his suspicions about Z’ha’dum and a mystery race that had attacked the Narns. Having served that purpose, Na’Toth became superfluous and expendable. She’s Pak’ma’ra fodder now.

May I suggest to anyone who is having a problem with local stations carrying their favorite shows that they get a satellite dish!

They’re great. With the regular (big) ones you even get wild feeds (I get B5 a week before they show it in Denver!) I pay about $160. A year. That’s a YEAR for over two hundred channels (No movie channels in that price) When compared to even basic cable (Over twice that per year) my system will be paid for in about 5 years! It’s good to make sure local stations are carrying B5 etc. (I write to mine even though I never watch it on the local station) but when all else fails get a satellite dish! -LEX

RE: Fat guy asking questions at Comicon.

I was the fat guy in the blue T shirt asking whether some of your story ideas (Jack the ripper, the underground dwellers, the junkie doctor) had come from a reading of Ellison’s work. In the blast furnace environment of a room with 1500 brains (well, technically) working all at once, we sometimes can’t say what we mean or what we mean gets said wrong. So I am taking the computer time needed to get my question straight right here.
First—why listen to a thing I say? I have been reading Ellison’s books for 30 years and teaching them on the college level for half that period of time. I am a writer whose work has been bought by Astronomy, Lyrical Iowa, the Urbanite, The Poet, and many other periodicals; I have written and had produced a dozen plays in the cities of Bettendorf and Davenport. I also teach literature and composition and creative writing, and use Harlan’s works in all three classes, hopelessly corrupting as many young minds as I can get my hands on every year. So I am real familiar with his work.
And while many writers, from Mickey Spillaine to Neil Gaimon, have down-and-out characters talking trash, only Harlan’s, as far as I have read, talk about “carrying on cranky,” a phrase used by both Ivanova (first) and Garibaldi (later) in your show. And yes, many folks use Jack the Ripper (I do too) in their works, but only Harlan had the man deeply concerned that he was called “Jack” when that was not his real name, a trait he shares only with your Mr. Jack that just about clobbers Delin.
Am I discussing plagiarism here? Of course not. I would not come to a conference and ask a question just to insult someone. I guess that’s high on some people’s lists, but I come to conferences of people I respect and admire, and you are putting out the best SF program on TV right now, as you seem to know. I get on line and try to convert DS9 fanatics, who only vaguely remember that Londo “Looked a lot like Grandpa Munster,” that there has been a huge development and change in the last three years. But face it—-Ellison has affected every aspect of my writing since I ran into him at age 16, and It would be weird if someone who lives by the pen (processor, keyboard) like you didn’t have squbs and scraps from his works burning holes in odd interstices of your cortex, too. I just wondered if this was just unconscious dredging, or if you and Harlan knocked ideas around and he’d say something like “Hey, I wrote this story years ago about a doctor with a monkey on his back—now this guy is working a zillion hours A week, what’s keepin’ him awake, eh?” Something like this. If you really thought I was dissing you, I’m sorry. I think you turn out a terrific show, and I and my family are fans forever. See you at the next con, wherever that may be.

Why spend time worrying about the fate of B5 – be thankful it’s at least been renewed for another season. If season 5 is meant to happen, it will happen, but it’s really premature to be concerned about it at this point. Besides, what makes you think John Copeland is going to tell you anything about it now, even if he did know something? And more ridiculous than that, what makes you think Walter Koenig has some kind secret info on the fate of Babylon 5 (“Jill caught Walter insinuating to JMS that this coming season will be the last for B5″). How would HE know? The powers that be, JMS, Copeland etc. aren’t going to let anything slip to anyone who isn’t in their “inner circle” – and the inner circle doesn’t include people/fans/B5 watchers who go to their various conventions. I know Jeff Conaway and speak to him often, and I’ve given up trying to get any info on upcoming episodes, because he won’t tell me a THING – under penalty of death or worse from JMS, who’s very protective of all aspects of the show. So, just enjoy it while it’s on, be grateful that it IS on, and hope it runs to the end of the arc. If it doesn’t, well, such is life…

We do have a right to know the fate of the show. We’re the show’s fans…it’s lifeblood! JMS & Co. may be the B5 Gods, but what happens to gods if they aren’t worshipped? They fade away from memory and possibly existence…

I am thankful that B5 is on, but hey! Without me (and 1000’s more just like me), there wouldn’t be a show! Just so you all know, I dropped a note to Pigdog 13 aka John Copeland, B5 producer extraordinaire about the “no comment” and/or fate of Season 5. This is what he had to say:

“My time has been a real premium of late, so I haven’t been able to spend much time on the boards. However, usually the phrase “no comment” means just that. Folks are in the habit of reading way too much into just about everything that gets posted on the boards. A suggestion to the antsy folks out there is to relax. All will be revealed in the fullness of time.

Feel free to repost this anywhere you want.”

So take that as you will, but it sounds to me like the way B5 has always been run “we’re dealing with this show one season at a time”. So time will tell. And until jms decides to come back and verify things, we just have to be optimistic.

As for knowing someone/anyone at UPN, what the *hell* do they know? UPN is a Paramount owned and operated franchise. They don’t know what Paramount is doing half the time, let alone Warner Bros! It’s like all the rumours that crop up around renewal time – someone always knows *someone* who works *somewhere* (a station, an affiliate, etc.) who starts doomsaying and everyone starts to panic…and none of these prophecies of dire and dread events come to pass. JMS has commented on this himself in past. Yes, the fans have a right to know – but only if there is hard evidence to let us know. Speculation, innuendo and half-baked rumours get us nowhere. Perhaps that’s why no one official has told us that Season 4 is going to be the last one…it’s probably not decided yet.

And as for the ending production date of January 1997, that’s kind of irregular considering production hasn’t wrapped until April/May of *every* prior season of Babylon 5.

I’m sorry you misinterpreted my post. WHY do you think you have a right to know the fate of the show *in advance*? You, as a viewer, DON’T. The only people who do are the people involved in writing and producing it. Do you think being a fan of the show entitles you to know plot lines in advance, or what’s happening behind the scenes? Reread the original post “Terrifying Silence”. Apparently some reporter out in Toledo has been bombarding John Copeland (and whoever else) with e-mails badgering him to reveal the future of B5. I NEVER implied JMS & Co. were “thumbing their noses” at the fans, but they don’t owe you an explanation when it comes to their future plans for the show, and if you think they do, then *you’re* the one with a problem. Hey – I’m a fan too, but I’m content that it’s been renewed for another season. Whatever happens later – happens. And my comment about Jeff C. was merely to show that there IS a very tight-lipped attitude among everyone involved in the series. I’m a writer and he’s been very helpful to me, that was all I meant.

So FemB’s comments struck a nerve with you Luv? I wonder why. Maybe if you knew someone from the show, you would’ve understood what FemB was saying in their post, which your comeback comments show you clearly did not. The only thing the people involved with B5 owe the public is putting out the best show they can. They’ve done that. Anything else they want to give the viewers should be considered a gift, not a “right to know”, as you put it. You said “We’re the shows fans, it’s lifeblood! Without me and thousands more just like me, there wouldn’t be a show.” Very deep. You remind me of the type of person who, if you encountered a celebrity, would run up demanding an autograph, and if the person couldn’t/wouldn’t give it to you, would hear you screaming obscenities at them, followed up with “Who would you be without ME ME ME!!!!” I have some advice for you. 1) Get a life and; 2) Get a life. Try pulling WNUV – 54 out of Baltimore or UPN-20 out of DC. The receiption may
not be great but it may be better than nothing…..if not find someone that lives where
B-5 is shown and ask then to tape it for you.

Dear JMS,

First a great show, IMHO the best on television today (I know you have heard it a million times, but quality woek should always be recognized). My question is; why is Earth so powerfull in the B5 universe. What makes Earth stand out from among the non-alligned races. We don’t seem to have any unique or powerfull technology (re Vorlon and Mimbari), we don’t have a long history as a starfairing race (re Centauri), and we are not particularly aggressive or warlikr (re Narns). So what the heck is the basis of humanities pivitol position in the B5 universe (apart from the obvious reasion that a TV show on Earth should probably have Humans as the central figures). Even before the relationship between the Humans and Mimbari was recognized Earth was powerfull. Does it go back to the wart with the Dilgar. I understand that the Dilgar sun went nova, does humanity owe it’s place in the B5 universe to luck or is there something else behind it?

Thanx for the time, and one again, gongradulations on a wonderful show.

<<What makes Earth stand out from among the non-alligned races.>>

I believe Delenn said it was the humans talent for ‘creating communities’ wherever they go. None of the other races would have shared a station like the babylons, or even created such a port of call. Good or bad, the humans take it all, bring it together, and make it work somehow.

Notice how, while all the other races scramble to cover their own butts, its the humans pulling them together? Even the Vorlons and Minbari recognize a need for such a community, and follow Sheridan’s lead in this war. All the smart ones are part of Sheridan’s alliance now, and only that community can save the galaxy. (Notice how, in WWE, when the Shadows hit their station in the last war, there were only Minbari ships fighting? Then notice the ecclectic bunch of ships defending B5. See what i mean about community?)

Actually, regarding seasons 4 and 5, I figure it this way.

At the end of season 2, they held over 3 shows, which were shown at the start of season 3.

At the end of season 3, they are holding over 5 shows, which will be shown at the start of season 4.

So…..

At the end of season 4, they will hold over 7 shows, which will be shown at the start of season 5.

Then, after season 5 has ALMOST finished, we will discover that they will hold over 9 shows, to be shown in a 6th year, even though the series will have finished and there is nothing to renew.

Then they can charge TNT for TWO extra years of B5 past the first 4, instead of just one extra year.

FemBlondii – I think I have a right to know the future status of the show because I invest my time in watching it. I don’t want to know plot lines; I don’t want to know behind-the-scenes info; I just want to know (from *JMS*) if all the rumors flying around are true. I believe I did misinterpret your post a little…I thought you were trying to name-drop at first…but I do still believe that as a B5 fan, I have the right to ask if B5 will be allowed to fulfill the arc. Nothing personal, just a difference of opinion.

JOHN DANT – if you’ll re-read my original post, you’ll see that all I’m implying is that we should know if we need to fight for B5 to continue. If there is a chance that it might not continue, isn’t it better that as fans we organize now for the fight (such as the Powers of Light have been doing for the past season)? Without knowing of the need to organize, we might find ourselves in the same position as the Narns – beaten. (But hopefully never defeated).

Mireille22 –

A) FYI, a little background…as a Star Trek fan I have found myself dissatisfied with TNG being taken off the air in its prime. I’m not comparing B5 and ST – I believe there’s enough room for both universes – I’m just saying that I’m leery when fans are not taken into account. TV is a *business* and viewers are “investors” in the “product” (B5). As an “investor,” I believe I have a right to know how my “investment” is doing. Obviously you disagree with me and that’s OK by me.

B) Also FYI…I am very involved in the political arena and as such I have dined with presidential candidates, US Congressmen, various governors, and on occasion a bona fide movie star or 2. I have never believed in asking for autographs. I think it’s petty. I have a wonderful life – one I would not trade – and until you meet and get to know me (which will probably never happen), please refrain from such foul judgments of my character.

JMS – if I have offended you or your “crew” in any way, please accept my apologies. I have the utmost respect for your B5 vision and I would like to see it completed. Peace be with you.

“And that’s all I got to say about that.”

Some friends and I are thinking of doing a sf media convention and we liked the name “Zocalo” (although we were unable to find it in the dictionary).

We’d like to know if “Zocalo” can be used as the name of a convention. The con itself would not be a B5 convention, althought there would be one or two panels on the show. If it cannot be used due to copyright laws, we’ll just have to find another name. Thanks.

While I have no in at WB or anywheres else in Hollywood I don’t see why itcouldn’t be used. After all the main plaza in Mexico City -surrounded by such places as the parliment building, St Stephens Cathedral down the street from both a Mayan Temple and the National Pawn Shop is also called the Zocalo. Based on that I doubt anyone has a lock on the name.

JMS has said that soon a character will die and become an ex-character. At first, I took that to mean a real-time (2260) death. But given his love of playing with words (one of the greatests hazards in understanding JMS), the radio interview where he said that we would find out more about John & Delenn on Centauri Prime (17 years into the future) and the dangerous and highly precarious position they are in, I can see where the meaning could be that either John or Delenn will die on Centauri Prime in the future and we, the fans, will know it. Even if one of them is *not* the charcter who will “die,” the situation on Centauri Prime is life threatening and your comments potent.

If that happens, what reason would I have to invest 2 more years into this show? I love this show!!!!! For me, as for many, this relationship is a major incentive to watch B5,
even though you give us only teasers, 5-10 minutes snuck in between every second or third episode and dragged on at a seemingly microscopic pace. In spite of the interminably protracted development (to the point where realism begins to crack), the popularity of the relationship speaks for the hunger of your audience for a beautifully written, artistically presented and well-crafted love story between functional adults portrayed by characters who have a very strong appeal to the audience (a rarity in television or film). Your talent is extraordinary in this regard!!! If I know that either John or Delenn is going to die at some point, even if outside of the 5 year arc, I will still have a sense of loss and will feel less inclined to stay with the show. But as the Muslims say, “what is written is written,” for Allah has already put to pen and film the ending of this scene.

Their death aside, I would like to address the “nook & cranny” coverage of the relationship. I know you (JMS) write a story the way you see it, not necessarily to appeal to fans, but imagine how even more popular this show would be if you gave it more “prime time” coverage! If the value of classic story telling and the story is so great to tell, and the ratings so critical to the next 2 years, can there not be a compromise between you and your fans? Where both benefit? The fans benefit by seeing more of the J&D relationship and draw in more fans in their enthusiasm and you get the ratings that stabilize the show in WB’s eyes enough to keep it to its 5 year finish. Think about it. Respectfully, a fan.

While you are correct that TV is a business you have completely missed the relationship viewers hold with shows. You are not an investor in the show you are the product that the show delivers to the purchasers of commercial time. Once you understand how it really is decisions made by commercial networks make slightly more sense (only slightly however).

Joe,

YOu have established that for a thousand years, Minbari souls were being born into human bodies, and that Sinclair/Valen’s arrival opened that doorway between the two peoples.

A thousand years between the events of B5 would make it around 1260 A.D. our time. The migration of Minbari souls seems to coincide with the dawning of the European Renaissance. In the ‘fictitious’ world of Babylon 5, would those events be connected?

My own little “theory”, is that Valen (Sinclair) made up the whole “souls” thing to give the Minbari 1000 years later a reason not to crush the humans in the Earth-Minbari war.

If you check back on the first couple of episodes from season 2 I think you’ll find that the whole souls thing was discovered as less Minbari were being born durning the War. After they abducted Sinclair they found that their souls were being transferred to the humans.

I believe that part of the story was a revelation made in B5’s modern history, not a prophecy from Valen.

If your listening i have an idea for a Sheridan and Delenn episode…

This would be kinda like “Sic Transit Vir” in which we would take a break from the war with the shadows. This one instead of being focused on the other characters…would focus on the Sherdian/Delenn relationship. and along with that i would like this one also to be with some memories of old earth…Here are some examples.. These are mostly love songs i can up with off the top of my head:

1. Top Gun “Take my Breath Away”

2. Peter Cetera “Glory of Love”

3. Footloose “Footloose”

If you like this..respond to this message.

The reason why i’m doing this is i want to take a shot at screenwriting and directing if possible.

<< If your listening i have an idea for a Sheridan and Delenn episode… >>

Please, NO STORY IDEAS!!!
This is a cardinal rule of this board, because JMS simply will not participate if story ideas are suggested here. How many times have you heard on the news or read in the papers that some little unknown nobody is suing a famous director, producer, or movie studio for stealing his idea? Most of the time, it turns out that the famous person came up with the idea on his own, but it looks superficially LIKE an idea that the unknown came up with — also on his own. But, occasionally, the unknown person sends his idea/song/picture to a famous person, trying to “break into” the business. And if things get sticky, everybody has to go to court.

JMS doesn’t want to go to court. He wants to write and produce the best SF show on television. Going to court would be a distraction that might mean the show doesn’t get done as well — or doesn’t get done at all. Is this what you want?

Because of this problem, a lot of famous people simply don’t accept unsolicited story ideas, manuscripts, etc. They throw them out, unopened. Or better yet, keep them unopened in a big box somewhere, so they can demonstrate in court, “See, your honor, I never could have read this guy’s story — I didn’t even open the envelope!”

So make up all the stories you like, but don’t post them here. If you really want to submit story ideas for television, contact JMS or somebody else about the proper channels to do so. Mostly, that seems to involve putting a few layers of bureaucracy between the creative people and the production people, but it seems to be a necessary evil.

Saw our fave bad boy on the Tom Snyder Show tonight (Tues.) – and Harlan Ellison is looking very, very good for someone who has had a quad-bypass seven weeks ago. He is back to his old self, all full of vim and vigor. He did talk about his infamous non-computer literacy. He said he has heard there are several Harlan web sites and one site has more than 28,000 hits on it (since Sept.). He also mentioned his CD-rom computer game, how popular it is, and how the people who go to the Harlan web site are completely dumbfounded that a guy who “can’t even turn on a computer” can invent a computer game. He said “You know why I can invent a computer game and know nothing about computers??? Because I am smarter than you schmucks, that’s why!!!!!”

That’s our Harlan. A humble sort, not he. By the way, he has a new compendium of his stories out on the bookselves. That’s why he was on Snyder’s show, he was promoting the book.

Still, I love the guy. Give ’em hell, Harlan, for many more years to come. :-)

Just curious, but I was under the impression that the story line was already “set in stone” and that JMS has stated on numerous occasions that he has had back-up plans for the various B5 characters should an actor suddenly leave. This implies that what ever is stated here or on another BBS is somewhat legally irrelevant. (I’m not a lawyer so don’t take the above statement as anything other than my opinion and besides….if JMS asked that no story lines be addressed to him….so be it. Thats just showing respect.)

The story may be set in stone with backup plan, but we don’t know what those stories are.
If someone here posts an idea for a story that JMS has already got a script for, then that could
create an issue where someone would feel that he took his/her idea. Therefore, entitled to credit.
JMS should not have to use a backup plan if someone posts their own story idea that just happens to be on the same wave length as JMS.

It is his story, and I think he’s been doing a fantastic job on his own.

I’ve seen at least 1 web area where 1 fan writes his own B5 related stories. It is called Sector
Reports (although I haven’t had a chance to check it out in awhile), and the subject is Sinclair
and Garibaldi correspondence. What I checked out, it was very good.

So something like this could be a good outlet for folks who are very creative and want to share with other folks.

Hi all:
As a cure for the creative souls among us, may I humbly offer the following suggestion:

create a new folder strictly for B5 Fan Fiction

That is if one doesn’t already exist. I’m on email lists for both Highlander: the Series and Forever Knight fan fiction – sometimes the ideas get a little wild, but they’re fun to read. The forum allows us to write about our favorite character/stories **without** violating the necessary protections that creative people involved with the shows MUST have. As previously sited, valid LEGAL reasons exist that prevent JMS and others in similar positions on other shows from even *listening* to fan ideas, much less reading them in a forum like this one (there’s an electronic “paper trail” that a lawyer would love to have in a copyright court case).

I, for one, truly enjoy reading JMS’ pithy answers to our questions – I would hate to see his participation stop simply out of self-protection, but it would if something like this happens again.

If you are truly interested in becoming a screenwriter, the best advice I ever heard was from a *working* screenwriter. Go to Hollywood. Get an agent. You and agent knock on doors. Present your work. Hope for job. Repeat as necessary until you find work.

The only, and I mean ONLY television show that I ever heard of that accepted unsolicted scripts while in production was Star Trek: The Next Generation. They *may* still accept such scripts for ST:Voyager or DS9, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Sorry for the long digression, folks, but I’ve *talked* to these people about this subject – while they would LOVE to do some of the ideas they’ve (reluctantly) heard from fans, they can’t – the legal reprocussions can be extreme.

Now to return you to the subject of this folder: “Ask JMS#8″……

speaking of the ghod Himself – where is he???? Has anyone heard? “Seen” him on other forums?? What gives??? Several good questions about the season “finale” have been posted, and I have been waiting to see the answers JMS comes up with.

TTYL – Lynn

JMS is here, and he still uses his AOL account to post to the internet newsgroups. His last post there was in the last three or four days. Therefore, unless he proves otherwise by suddenly working this folder again, I think we have to assume that we ran him off.

Time and again this guy has left one forum or another because of story ideas being posted. More than likely, he left here for that reason.

He is writing scripts for season four right now, so he probably can’t take any chances. Maybe after the scripts are all finished for the year we might get lucky and have him come back.

One bit of good news though, If memory serves, he usually declares he is leaving before he goes, that hasn’t happened here, so maybe there is still a chance….

If the transformed Delenn, a *Minbari* soul in a (mostly?) human body, balances the human
to Minbari transposition that started the migration of Minbari souls into humans 1000
years ago, then that metamorphosis of Sinclair into Valen must have resulted in a
*human* soul in a Minbari body – the word “balance” implies equivalence. But we are
told that Sinclair is recognized as having a *Minbari* soul when he is captured and
scanned by the Gray Council during the Battle of the Line. The implication –
Sinclair/Valen “spiked the punch” so to speak, injecting what are (uniquely?) human soul
characteristics into the Minbari soul bank, or whatever it’s called, that is scanned to
determine genuine Minbari-ness. True Minbari souls are very probabaly being born in
human bodies as the Minbari believe, though, since the Gray Council found other humans
like Sinclair, and Minbar’s population has decreased in the millenium since Valen led the
Minbari. Somehow Sinclair/Valen’s human soul, since he was a holy person, impelled or
attracted Minbari souls toward humanness and human incarnations.

JMS if you are out there, could you at least tell me to blow it out of my ear.

Yah, logical, but he’s been using his AOL account to post to the rastb5.moderated group.

{{DelennV}} I don’t know if Kosh is “dead” but I did read a posting transcript from JMS talking on Comp-u-Serve, (don’t ask me how I found this) and he confirmed a transferance between Lyta & Kosh, so she will be back, (as him?)

I suggest you see what we actually DO with the show, and that relationship, before making either conclusions or threats or overall statements.

In general, I work out the elements of each race that tends to distinguish it from the others as an overall unit (in which there can be some variation, I don’t believe in totally monolithic, all-the-same races), and play those throughout; I also create the aspects of each individual character within that as a subset. Whe I write, I just have that info in the background, and let the characters take me with them.

Yeah, it was a sneaky way of having a first kiss and *not* having a first kiss, all at the same time.

We plan to bring at least one other woman character in as a recurring character next season, and do more with the female characters we already have.

…and taking care of some of the backlog, as best I can. It’s a lot to catch up on. Things just got nuts, as they will do on a show like this. Address any other notes to the #9 ask jms section, as this one’s about to fill up, I think. Sorry for the absence…

This is one of those questions that’s kind of like asking the magician to tell you where that rabbit REALLY came from…and to look at the alternate universe possibiliities of the story, and I’m just barely adequate to keep THIS story going without looking at all the permutations, which would just make me get confused and fall down….

Funniest thing I’ve heard all day…..

“As a cure for the creative souls among us, may I humbly offer the following suggestion: create a new folder strictly for B5 Fan Fiction”

Absolutely positively no way.

Yes, the B5 storyline is set. Could we win any case in court? Yes. Do I want to spend three years of my life or thereabouts giving depositions, talking to lawyers, and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars and the aggravation involved in all this? No. Not because somebody wants to toss out a story idea and later decide he wants to sue.

No fan fiction, no story ideas. Or I’m outta here. That’s tough to say, and to hear, but that’s the only request I make in exchange for being here.

I started watching at season 2, and I must say that Babylon 5 is the best S.F. show I have seen in a long time! Keep up the good work.

I know this question may have been asked in the past many times, but is there ever reruns of previous season episodes?

What’s going on with the fan club? I’ve heard nothing at all from any official source. Do I assume my money is lost or was stolen? Or do I assume I will eventually get something for my money? I would like an answer from somebody OFFICIAL or somebody in the know.

Storm.

Stuff is going out, it’s just taking a while. Some stuff went out bulk rate via a misunderstanding, and we had to get it back and re-send it first. Most folks are getting theirs this week or thereabouts. I’ll be posting a contact number soonish for folks who haven’t gotten their stuff yet.

Dear JMS
I just had the pleasure of attending the first B-5 oriented convention in the Boston area (Rebelcon in Taunton, MA) and meeting Rick Biggs, Pat Tallman, and “The One”. Rick and Pat were a joy for the fans and made a wonderful impression with their wit and humor. Many of us here feel your show is the best SF in years and welcome any opportunity to tell you that. Michael O’Hare, although pleasant and gracious to us, seemed to be visiting that “hole in his mind” you so aptly described. Perhaps he was on medication that had some serious side effects or something of that nature. We all hope that he recovers soon and continues to represent you and your show in the positive manner he always has in the past.

Well, enough of that pretentious diplomatic blather!!! I had a great time at the convention and would love to see you come out here to Boston and visit with us. You’ve got a hugh following and
we would be thrilled to see you. (Meanwhile, talk to Rick Biggs and Pat about the B-5 cruise to
Bermuda I’m trying to set in motion.) Don’t EVER say I don’t have some terrific ideas!!!

Again, thanks for your genius and your show.

Another gibbering fan,
Winnie Mitchell (Wimzadi@AOL.COM)
