JMS,

I read in one of the net support areas that you felt most if not all of the markets abandoned by short sighted, greedy station managers would have replacement stations in place by the start of season 4.

Can you confirm that negotiations are underway with any Philly, PA station? And if so, what would you rate the odds of being successful, on a scale of 1 to 10?

We’ll keep blitzing the local VHF stations, but some encouraging words would be welcomed….

Thanks,

I had read that it was to be a possibility. I think it would be a good episode as a filler and of course Harlan’s writing is superb. Please continue the great work on B5. I enjoy it very much!!

JMS–

No question…just a “bon chance” wish for Season 4!

We have our own little following here at the local planetarium in Oklahoma City…we love the show and (don’t tell our director this!) some of us try to plug it in some sort of way every public show we do!!! Believe it or not, there’s actually people out there who don’t know about your wonderful show…but don’t worry – we’re spreading the news!!

Well, now I guess I do have a “rhetorical” question…I really don’t know how these things work, but is there any chance you might come to Oklahoma City for some sort of convention? Claudia C. will be in Tulsa later this month…if you get bored (right!) we’d love to have you!!!

Subj: Gray Council paradox?

From: Rob Reed
Posted on: America Online

Valen formed the Gray Council, and wrote two letters; one was to Jeffrey Sinclair telling him that *he* was actually Valen, and would have to come back in time along with Babylon 4 to stop the Shadows in the past. But Sinclair learned of this only after studying/serving as Earth’s ambassador on Minbar for two years.

Q: Where did the idea for the Gray Council come from?
A: Why, Valen, of course.
Q: But Sinclair is/was Valen. Where did Sinclair learn of it?
A: Probably either public Minbari history, or Delenn, or other sympathetic Minbari.
Q: So you’re saying Sinclair learned about it from histories of himself.
A: Correct.
Q: But that’s a cause/effect loop! The source of the idea is its own existence.

Is this correct? Did the Gray Council’s existence suddenly spring full-blown from the Great Maker’s imagination? Or is there more to this that we haven’t been told yet?

Getting dizzy,

Dear JMS,

I got the impression during the Delenn-Sheridan scene in the war room, that, as Sheridan lamented their ignorance of the Shadow’s aims, Delenn looked on the verge of saying something; I thought it kind of unlikely ( but certainly possible) that they (minbari) fought the Shadows 1000 years ago in a great war and defeated them, without ever learning what they were after. I thought perhaps Delenn knows what they are after but for some reason she does not think Sheridan can handle the truth at this point . Am I off?
By the way, the show, as always, has been fantastic, thank you…I know you will keep them coming…with best wishes for season 4..

Dear JMS:
This is my first post; thank you for creating such a special and wonderful world. In watching & rewatching WWE, II, I keep focusing on the final scene when Delenn reveals that Sinclair is Valen and also that her “change” was in part to balance the scales, and that “that door is now closed forever.” Does this mean that Delenn’s real motive for undergoing the change was to stop Minbari souls from being born into humans, and thus stop the decline of her race? If this is true, it runs counter to her stated goal of “bringing humans and Minbari closer together,” but certainly ties in with your ongoing theme of species trying to survive *no matter what.* Do we need to be more suspicious of our noble Delenn ? (I personally hope not, she’s a terrific role model).

Couldn’t they have intros to the first season repeats with new intros of Bruce as Sheridan introducing the episodes. St. Elsewhere did this when they had the Norman Lloyd introduce first season episodes of that show during its third season. There is a precedent and I think it works. You could also flash a disclaimer at the end of the commercial breaks saying a “B5 Classic”. It might even work pretty well for when TBS picks up the series.

Subj: Sinclair’s *Human* Soul
Date: 96-07-13 18:21:21 EDT
From: METonkin
Posted on: America Online

If the transformed Delenn, a Minbari soul in a (mostly) human body, balances the human
to Minbari transposition that started the migration of Minbari souls into humans 1000
years ago, then that metamorphosis of Sinclair into Valen must have resulted in a
*human* soul in a Minbari body – the word “balance” implies equivalence, and it doesn’t make sense any other way. But we are told that Sinclair is recognized as having a *Minbari* soul when he is captured and scanned by the Gray Council during the Battle of the Line. The implication –
Sinclair/Valen “spiked the punch” so to speak, injecting what are (uniquely?) human soul
characteristics into the Minbari collective unconscious, soul bank, or whatever it’s called,
that is scanned to determine genuine Minbari-ness. But true Minbari souls are very
probabaly being born in human bodies as the Minbari believe since the Gray Council
found other humans like Sinclair, and Minbar’s population has decreased in the millenium
since Valen led the Minbari. Somehow Sinclair/Valen’s human soul, since he was a holy
person, impelled or attracted Minbari souls toward humanness and human incarnations. Or there really is no difference in human and Minbari souls, despite Minbari belief. Is this a fair interpretation?

Dear Joe,
I was watching I&E over again, and it made wonder about the battle scene between the shadows and the vorlons. Was that sequence edited down from a longer one? It seemed a little incomplete in that it showed the large vorlon ship squaring off with a shadow vessel then cutting to the scene with Londo. Later, we return to the fleet action in time to see the vorlons leaving. It still played ok and was easy to follow, however, I’m just curious if there was a longer sequence planned and reduced or if you intended it to play that way.

thanks

The Vorlons have been pulling everybody’s strings throughout history……..And they are supposed to be the good guys…..Pretty scary, isn’it? <<

Nope, I hadn’t forgotten them. The thing is, they didn’t arrive until well *after* Sinclair had boarded Babylon 4 — after he’d remembered being interrogated by the Council at the Battle of the Line, after Delenn acknowledged to him that his resurfaced memories were correct, and after he’d spent 2 years on Minbar as Earth Ambassador and Ranger One.

By the time Babylon 4 arrived in the past (and met up with those other Vorlons), Sinclair conceivably knew more about the Gray Council and Minbari history than any other human. This indicates that the existence of the Gray Council in the future was in fact the cause for its formation in the past — because Sinclair/Valen knew that that was the way it would happen.

Put another way, using JMS’s Schroedinger’s Cat example of the alternate B5 universe glimpsed through the Sector 14 anomaly, the entire *history* of Minbar — and hence B5 — in the alternate universe was different! Since B4 wasn’t there to save the day 1000 years ago, Valen wasn’t there, either. Which means Valen didn’t form the Gray Council, or make his predictions for the future.

Or at least not *Sinclair*/Valen…

My head’s starting to hurt from this, so I think I’ll quit here. But if the Vorlons are involved at this level as you claim, then the importance of Valen and the Babylon project takes on staggeringly huge new dimensions.

Time travels at the speed of 24 hours a day and I compare it to the crest of a wave and you are on top of a surfboard riding the wave. You might turn left or turn right, but in the end it will be you or an external force (Another surfer colliding with you) the one that affect the outcome. But if you theoretically extract yourself from the wave and manage to put yourself on a past wave; you and only you will be the one to experience the changes that you create on this past existence. The universe that you leave behind(The present) won’t cease to exist, it will continue its course, and become a pararell universe. It has something to do with Bohr’s uncertainty principle in wich the oucome of an experiment depends on the choices the observer makes, rather than a universal constant. In the show where Delenn confronts the Grey Council, she breaks what appears to be a metal staff with her bare hands. In the episode WWEII, she gets Sheridan out of a space suit while he
is unconscious. In I&E, Lennier lifts Marcus off his feet without much apparent effort. There is not
a lot of talk about it, but just how much stronger than humans are Minbari? If they are considerably stronger than humans, then how did the crazy human sniper survive behind enemy lines and successfully torture several Minbari? (Sorry, the one in I&E).
Also, if you did see and answer my question (which I doubt) about whether or not Vir has a keeper in the future, I missed it because of the “if you log on and don’t get through all the messages” quirk with aol’s definition of new. If you had any thoughts about my musings, I would
appreciate a recap. Thanks. B5 is great and you are doing a great job!!!

JMS,
I know that you said that you are planning to end the Shadow War next season. I was wondering, what do you have planned after they deal with the Shadows and all the trouble they have caused, which includes Earth and all the other things. Are you planning to start a new plot or are you just going to spend the last 2 seasons having the characters deal with the “mess” that they have to clean up from the war.

If we are slowly being made aware that the Vorlons are literally not the angels that they appear to be, and that the flip side of this is that the Shadows are not the completely evil devils they appear, then does this mean that Delenn is as much a puppet of the Vorlons as Morden is of the Shadows ?

Dear JMS

I am curious to what extent you utilize outside “talent” to review the scientific elements of your scripts. I know some television shows have scientific technical consultants who review scripts, and some other screenwriters (Michael Chrichton being a prominent example) informally bounce their ideas off of leaders in scientific disciplines. Please do not consider this post a “veiled” query about the level of your own scientific understanding. I am really simply curious about the extent you feel compelled to seek outside assistance.

Thank you, as always, for your attention to these queries….

LtJGMlnick,
I’m not sure that the Shadow War is the main issue here. We have had a lot of
character development this past year. I have never really believed that this was
a story driven series….more of a character one. The ending of the Shadow War is
just the closing of another chapter in these characters ‘lives’ and we go on from
there. Just like in real life…..at least that’s the way I have looked at it. I could be
wrong.

While at Shore Leave last weekend, I got a chance to see “Infections” for the first time.
The Icarus fought an enemy 1000 years ago (the Shadows?) and defeated them. They
seemed to have this bio-mechanical ability that the Vorlons, and the Shadows seem to
have (and it is stated that the Mimbari might have it). The artifacts that were found went
to Weapons Tech of EF. What happened to them then?

Also, no one seems to see a pattern in the Shadows attack…..maybe there isn’t
one….their tactics look more like some one ransacking a house looking for something.
Could I be on to something here? (at least the looking for something (or someone)?)

I noticed that Zathras’ costume changed in the scenes taken from B-Squared. I really do trust the 5 year arc is real. But wasn’t Zathras’ part in WWE anticipated so that the costume would have been kept in storage? It calls into question the 5 year arc just a bit (for the skeptic in me). I must say that I liked his new costume just fine, as well as the old. Why the switch?

Delenn said that the migration of Minbari souls into humans began with Valen, at the end of WWE2.

What I’ve been wondering is: might that be due to Valen having children of his own?

Ever since I saw WWE2, you see, I’ve had this thought: it would make for a *gorgeous* bit of symmetry if Delenn were a blood descendant of Valen…

I hope to all that’s holy that doesn’t count as a story idea; I figured that either it’s true or it ain’t, and that it was decided long before the first frame of “The Gathering” was etched into the celluloid.

One thing to remember about the shadows from what we saw in WWE part 2 is they vented their anger at losing on Londo’s world. JMS –
Thanks again for such a great show. (though if it weren’t quite so good, I might not be quite so obsessed with it, and I might not be spending my life saving on AOL bills during summer reruns . . . sigh :) And happy birthday!
I’ve been spending a considerable amount of time trying to figure out what it is the Shadows are trying to accomplish (entirely too much time, actually . . . I really need a life . . ) I have observed that the only thing the Shadows have done strictly on their own is attack the Rangers, which could be construed as self-defense (correct me if I’m wrong here, I don’t have every episode on tape, so I may have missed something.) They attacked the Narn at the request of the Centuari, it appears that their involvement with Earth began with helping Clark assassinate Santiago, most likely at his request (why would they care who was president?), and they only started attacking the league worlds after the league worlds went to war with each other. This all fits in with Morden’s “what do you want?” – it’s starting to look like the shadows are some sort of twisted genie in a bottle, granting you whatever you wish for, and then making you live with the consequenses.

I’m probably way off, but could you tell me if I have anyof this even partly right? Thanks for taking the time to read this. :)

Okay shows what I know.

So assuming that the Shadows have absolutely positively know pattern, maybe they are just a predator race and will hunt anything they can with no particular order of who goes first/last.

But JMS said warmer. So maybe they have a pattern, but maybe they are still hidden in the corners of everones territory waiting for a good time to pounce. If so, there would be no need for a solid pattern because it would be prone to change.

Maybe just maybe the Shadows were born to live in Space. Many many species have evolved to exist in a certain spot. Maybe the shadows are not advanced, maybe they evolved into a space race so to speak. When Morden helps them they seem to follow him like a pack of wolves obeying his command. Is it possible that that is what they are? The others who disapeared with morden realized the power they could have and they have befriended the Shadows like a man befriends a pack of Wild dogs. But they need Morden to show them how to stop the onslaught of new races taking more and more of their habitat. Maybe they are attacking to defend.

Maybe the Shadows are covering their own tracks….their random attacks keep the major and minor races on the defensive while they accomplish their real goals(whatever they may be; who said they’re only active in our part of the galaxy?) . And since they don’t seem to really care what happens in this part, why invest time studying, analyzing and planning devastating strikes against any one race when they can get their enemies to do all the hard work of planning, and just attack what they’re asked to attack? Just a thought, but I doubt their real goals are gonna be found by analyzing their strike pattern.

Maybe there’s something wrong with me, but I wonder if we’re all watching the same show. Why would The Shadows possibly want the forces of light to unite against them? Question 1) Haven’t The Shadows gone to great lengths to prevent such a unification by provoking a multitude of internal fighting against potential allies? Question 2) Didn’t Kosh give his very life in order to help Sheridan forge a military alliance to combat a common enemy — ie The Shadows?

Admittedly, my take on the Bab 5 Universe may be somewhat naieve, but I wonder if sometimes we all try to read a little too much into the story. (Not that anything associated with B5 should be taken at face value).

In reality, I have no idea why The Shadows would openly provoke a fight with numerous races at the same time. I suspect that their intelligence (and they clearly have great intelligence) efforts have pinpointed exactly who the major threats are.

Given that The Shadows have clearly superior technology to all but the Vorlons, one wonders exactly what this war is really about. I doubt its about superior technology. Perhaps its about something deeper and more fundamental (our immortal soul?).

Or maybe, The Shadows are really angry about something. Certainly, this would explain much including the attempted destruction of The Narn race. Remember that The Narn planet served as a base of operations in the old war. I doubt the Narns were attacked only to keep them quiet about the existence of the 1000 year old enemy given that the Vorlons and Minbari already knew of them. But again, I’m not sure what this means either.

To make sure everyone is clear on this,

Zha’Ha’Dum IS the season 3 finale episode title. According to JMS, it’s two previous episodes will lead up to the dramatic season finale which is supposed to be one heck of a doozy. Personally, I’m more excited to see the episode before it “Shadow Dancing” JMS said that anything that could go wrong in B5 does in that episode. Sounds interesting.

Qsilver8

P.S. To JMS, on some really well-made B5 page the creator had some footage and script from the last 5 episodes probably from the San Diego convention. I read the closing lines that G’kar says in “Zha’Ha’Dum” It’s that kind of stuff that really makes me appreciate how well of an actual writer you really are. Didn’t give anything way, only made me really wonder. Also, a quick question. Will G’kar be narrating the opening sequence in season 4????

Yeah, but that comment about the “ark” stories was about the biggest boo-boo. Having misunderstood the concept of a story ARC, the author of the TV Guide article wrote “ark,” then went out of his way to explain how it was a religious experience like having the stories handed down directly from God.

But it WAS great to see the show mentioned — even with a notice on the TV Guide cover!

In all fairness to TV guide. When they mentioned the “Ark” I think that they were talking about the triple encrypted file JMS had on his computer as the “ark” is considered a religious holy aspect. When they mentioned it, I don’t think they meant the 5 year long “Arc” as we all know, but rather as a reference to a holy object. I could be wrong though : )

Also, as pointless as it is to complain, I wish there had been more pages for the B5 article than the Trek stuff. Oh well. Off hand I’d say that it is probably Dark Horse, they do the Star Wars and Aliens books. I must say, I rather wish it was Marvel, but, they just made a big deal with Paramount to do Trek books, includding an X-Men/TOS crossover that should be interesting. Funny story about this…they wanted me to do this initially, because they figured fans would like it, but they didn’t have the money normally used to pay actors to do this sort of thing, and didn’t want to ask for it free, or pay low. So…you have to understand, as well as wanting to do something for the fans, I’m a fan myself…meaning that I was going to track down their new card set “Kingdom Come,” based on the DC comics miniseries, which is terrific. Now, I could either spend several months of my life chasing down chase cards…or agree to do the signings for a complete set. So that’s what we’re doing.

Dear JMS,

With the long dog days of summer re-runs going on I and many other of your loyal fans keep going back to old episodes and speculating on what will happen in the last 5 eps of season 3. As I go and examine previous episodes it leads me to a couple of questions.

1. It seems as though the further you go into the series, the more the stories are intertwined. The 1st season did not have much of this and for the most part except for a few episodes they all were single stories. In the 2nd season, it became more episode to episode orientated but still a lot of single stand-alone episodes. Now, in the 3rd season it seems that everything is all inter-connected and even with the stories that aren’t supposed to have real significance to the arc, they still connect with all the others and I was just curious. Was this your intent? To make the series become more episode-to episode serial like as you went further into the series????

2. I don’t want ANYTHING revealed mind you. None whatsoever, but ever since WWE 2, we’ve all been speculating on what’s to come and I want to know from YOUR perspective from someone who knows what is coming. Are we all way off?? Are we in for a shock???

Thanks for keeping me hooked,

* During WWE2, how did the Vorlons come to be on B4 when Valen(Sinclair) arrived at Minbar?

* During the episode “Matters of Honor, Morden shows how he and his associates and the Centauri have carved up the universe, Morden says that We have what we want . . . is this only referring to Zagros 7 or is there more to it? And if there is more . . are you willing to let us in on it?

* The Shadows appear to be agents of chaos, and if they have what they want, are the continuing attacks meant to cause confusion to mask their real purpose? And is there real purpose only to cause chaos and watch the other worlds try to figure out what is happening?

* Since we humans label everything, and because we believe in good we must also believe in evil. We have labeled the Vorlons good and the Shadows evil — Are the Shadows the flip side of the Vorlons?

* Will we see any more of Carolyn, Besters mistress? What happened to her?
Thanks for your time —

This might not be a question to JMS but nonetheless, speculation that I wouldn’t mind having him hear.
The way I see it, in WWE 2, when Sheridan becomes unstuck in time and gets transported to the future, and after his conversation with Delenn, we all assumed that that was going to be the outcome. However, as I continue to speculate, I don’t think that’s the case anymore. Delenn tells Sheridan NOT to go to Z’Ha’Dum. Now, if she told Sheridan this, and Sheridan complied, he would be changing the future in some way. UNLESS of course in that timeline, Sheridan never did go to Z’Ha’Dum and Delenn reminded him so he wouldn’t go later on and judging from the 3rd season finale title, my GUESS is that we all know where Sheridan is going to go therefore THAT would change the future, so either way. I see that future hard to fathom, and I think it was possibly a red herring to maybe lure us off track right before JMS slams a train into us. I could be wrong though just my thoughts.

More likely he is named after Sheridan’s father as others have suggested as well, besides if you want to name a baby after someone you normally use their first name not their middle one. It is hard to imagine …Sinclair knew his father , he talked about him, how would baby Sinclair get back from the future to about 45 years or so earlier…no more time travels as JMS announced…I think you are really stretching it there….sounds a little farfetched

This is a quote from Annie Dillard that reminds me of B5. I hope I have quoted her correctly because this is beautiful. I share this in the hopes JMS (and all of us here) will read and enjoy.

There is no one but us.
There is no one to send,
not a clean hand nor a pure heart
on the face of the earth, nor in the earth,
but only us,
a generation comforting ourselves
with the notion that we have come at an
awkward time,
that our innocent fathers are all dead
as if innocence had ever been–
and our children busy and troubled,
and we ourselves unfit, not yet ready,
having each of us chosen wrongly,
made a false start, failed,
yielded to impulse
and the tangled comfort of pleasures,
and grown exhausted, unable to seek the thread,
weak, and involved.
But there is no one but us.
There never has been.

JMS,

I heard tell that in your original pitch to WB you planned on having Kosh arrive on B5 with a female companion. If so, how would she have fugured into the pilot and the series in general? Or was she simply Kosh’s main squeeze? Until I heard this I didn’t think vorlons had genders. Do they mate in a conventional sense?

Is there a significance to the difference between Kosh’s suit and the suits of the other vorlons we saw in WWE1&2. I’m assuming that vorlons have evolved beyond the need to make fashion statements so does it have to do with rank or status?

I think Delenn was just doing what everyone else was doing, making a half-hearted effort to change history even though she knew it would fail. I think she forgot some Minbari equivalent of the “Law of Inverse Assent” from Greek mythology – namely, that the probability that warnings will be heeded is inversely proportional to the number of warnings given. Sheridan’s had too many warnings. He’ll go.

Delenn just knew what the White Star looked like, and had a vague idea that B5 personnel were involved after presumably taking her first look at B5 and its similarity to “Valen’s Funhouse.” I don’t think she could have had any idea exactly who was supposed to go and who was supposed to stay. They just needed a lot of competent people on board… and Sinclair knew he had to be there.

I tend to hit AOL a bit earlier, when I can, because the local nodes shut down around 2 a.m. Which is one reason why sometimes a few days will lapse between appearances here (besides my being generally nuts with work). If I don’t get to the nets until around 2 a.m. or so, and the AOL node is down…that’s it.

In light of what has happened it is apparent that one of three things shall happen. Either, A) Sheridan decides not to go. B) Sheridan does go and dies (if this happens then he will probably be re-born in some fashion). or C) Something much cooler will happen.
This I beleive exactly why JMS keeps the arc suck a closely guarded secret, because he knows that it keeps the audience guessing. Similar (very loosely) to how many felt about Back to the Future 2. The sence of where can it go now.
Other random stuff to ponder: What happened to B4 after the last Shadow war? Why does the story remind me of Revelations? Might the Vorlons be behind the Shadows and everything be just a test? Might the Universe finally realize itself? Might my dog be eating my meatloaf? Might Sheridan and Delenn be the two witnesses? Could I acctually get some sleep? The answers we may never know.

It may not be as farfetched as you believe. Said the Vorlon to Rathenn, “He is the closed circle. He is returning to the begining.” How about this…

Sinclair/Valen 1000, or so, years ago has a descendant named Delenn,
Delenn has a son named “David”,
David grows up, becomes Jeffery David Sinclair,
Sinclair goes back 1000 years to become Valen.
Closed circle!

Now, all this hinges on the fact that Delenn would have to have sent “David” back in time about 45 or so years to become Jeffery Sinclair. But, as stated before, JMS will not do another time travel episode. So, this means that for this scenario to play itself out, Delenn would have to have already traveled in time! Which she has! She, along with Sheridan wer both “unstuck” in time while aboard B4.

Now, to quote Delenn, “My people may be more technologically advanced than your people, but even we do not have the technology to control a time field as unstable as this one.” Does this mean that the Minbari can control “stable” time fields? Probably. Was she able to control where she went, when she became “unstuck”? Maybe! Maybe not so farfetched after all!

Assuming that you and Angela Lansbury parted on good terms when you left “Murder,

that will finally win a much overdue Emmy award for this great actress. Although MSW
was a fun show and Jessica Fletcher a likable character, Lansbury is capable of so very
much more – I’ll never forget her performance in “The Manchurian Candidate”. Angela
Lansbury as a guest star should also bring to B5 much needed publicity, and since MSW
is not longer filming weekly episodes, maybe she’d like something completely different!

And I’ll worry about the Shadows becoming heroes(or at least justified) to 30% of the audience when we find out that their leader has the initials J.S., Mr. J.S. (Unless, of course, the Shadows can make the trains run on time?)

Miles,
I believe JMS said Minbari’s knowledge of time travel is very limited, but more than , while I believe that what you say is theoretically possible, it still does not make much sense. Sinclair would have been an adopted son, and we have no indication of this; if anything he seems proud of his father and his family’s flying tradition that goes back to WWII ‘s battle of Britain.
Also while JMS is definitely full of surprises, this type of plot seems a little too unlike him, he does not seem to like to use the same plot “tricks” (so to speak) more than once, even if they are implied (as you say Delenn could send David back in the future and we would never see it) and not shown. And where would Delenn & Sheridan get the information that their son David is really Sinclair and must be sent back into the past? not from the Letter Delenn got from Valen, otherwise she would not have described Sinclair to Lennier as her friend, but her son.

I am still skeptical….;->

As for you, I just can’t express enough how well and how much I enjoy your writing on the show (as well as creating and executive producing) As someone who is very interested in the field of writing particularly in the Sci-fi/Fantasy area, you are someone who I would compare my work to. All the words spoken by Kosh, G’kar, Sheridan, and all the rest were all made by your pen and came from your head. JMS’s previous responses to questions about the sleeve and had are on the Lurker’s Guide entry for WWE 2. I guess they couldn’t exactly match the fabric of the sleeve from B^2 by the time they got around to filming WWE2. So they knew ahead of time that that wasn’t going to match. With the hand on the shoulder thing, JMS couldn’t be on the set when that part was shot and no one else caught it. Though I picked up on the hand thing right away, I think these continuity errors are small enough to overlook. You can’t produce a show like this and not have SOME minor errors.

The computer voice in B^2 wasn’t a continuity error though. As we saw in WWE2, Sinclair was just coming in through an airlock when this was happening. He had just tried to warn Garibaldi while he was floating outside the airlock, then he went in. The clip we saw in B^2 was Sinclair looking out the window of an airlock while his suit’s computer tells him that the atmosphere was breathable now, so he takes off his helmet then turns and walks out of view of the window. Then we see him with Delenn. We have to assume that either Delenn went to meet him at the airlock, or the airlock was pretty close to where the White Star was grappled onto B4.

JMS,

2 Questions:

I don’t know if this was answered before. I was just watching WWE 1 and 2 the other night on tape, and I had a question. When someone becomes “unstuck” in time, it appears that their consciousness does the time traveling. i.e.: Sheridan is transported 17 years into his future self. Whereever his body happens to be at that time period (in this case, on the Centauri homeworld), is where he will go. (It appears similar to TNG’s “All good things” where Picard’s consciousness was being sent into his future and past selves). Just curious,

When the show finally comes to video, can it be in the “Letterbox” format? Is the show produced on videotape, as opposed to film? I believe I understand that videotape is not an original “Letterbox” format, and if this were the case, Home Video Tapes would be seen just as the show is currently seen, correct?

Thanks for the great show! It’s such a break from the monotony of other Sci-Fi.

Letterbox is used for movies. Because the TV screen is not proportional to a movie screen you lose about 20% of the picture when a feature movie is put on video in standard format. That is the reason for letterbox. If you want to see just how much you lose, the next time the Sci-Fi Channel show Star Wars in letterbox record it. Then rent a video version in non-letterbox. Compare the two, particularly the scenes in the Millenium Falcon where Luke, Obi Wan, Han, Chewbacca and Leia are all present. On the non-letterbox you only see 3-4 of them. On Letterbox you will see them all.

This is not usually the case for TV shows. Show for television are usually filmed to be shown on TV screens and therefore do not have any extra footage on the left or right. It would take more time in editing a TV show because they would always be trying to center the image to fit on a TV screen.

I hope this clears things up for you. I’m sure I’m in error on a couple of points but that’s the basic jist of it.

Hi Joe,

First off, let me add my humble accolades to your magnificant achievement. Babylon-5 is among the very best program I’ve seen in any medium.

I’m just wondering…

I just saw the ep. with the Beserker Probe (I didn’t catch the title). In it we see Garibaldi visit G’Kar in his quarters.

G’Kar is wearing a loose robe and we can see his chest.

I was wondering how far the make-up that transforms a human being into another sort of sentient creature “normally” extends. Do you usually just do the visible portions?

A dumb question perhaps, but I was really wondering about it.

Thanks again.

Normally, the makeup extends to just around the wrists from the hands, and then from the top of the head to the neck. In scenes where G’Kar’s in an open robe, there’s a lengthy chest piece that extends down to his waist, and takes about another hour or so to apply.

Humanity’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths in comparison to other races. Also, if evolutionary theory is taken into account here, there may not be as many different climes on the other homeworlds (Narn, Centauri Prime, and Minbar) as there are on Earth.

Just a about every sci-fi show is starting to have this same idea that is just foolish, and B-5 is going down that trail. Its this idea that you can build a ship that learns from its mistakes and then figure out how not to be hurt. Please. Star Trek went down this road with the borge and in Voyager it had Dreadnought. Dreadnought was the worst because if any one could just build it then their fleet would be undefeatable. Now you have the White Star learning how not to take damage from the shadow fighters, what’s next? This is a cheap out if you ask me. Another thing, if the Shadow fleet is so powerfull then how did the Minbari fight them a thousand years ago? And why, if the minbari had space craft a thousand years ago did Delenn never see a shadow ship? Space flight then movies? not the evolution of technology that comes to mind. I love the show but sometimes its still out there.

<<Its this idea that you can build a ship that learns from its mistakes and then figure out how not to be hurt.>>

They didn’t *build* a ship that could learn – they *grew* it. The part of the ship that can learn is based on organic tech borrowed from the Vorlons. If something is alive, and can think, then it can learn. After experiencing the “pain” of the Shadow weapons a couple times, it figured out a better way of dispersing the energy so that those weapons did less damage.

<<Another thing, if the Shadow fleet is so powerfull then how did the Minbari fight them a thousand years ago?>>

Because the Minbari didn’t fight them alone. It’s been stated many times that the Minbari were only one part of an alliance that included the Vorlons and other races of the “first ones”, as well as some lesser races (like the Minbari).

<<And why, if the minbari had space craft a thousand years ago did Delenn never see a shadow ship? Space flight then movies?>>

But Delenn DID see video clips of Shadow ships. Remember, she’s the one who showed those clips to the rest of the crew on the White Star. She first saw them back when she joined the Gray Council. When she told that investigator from Earth that she had never seen one of those ships, she rationalized that she wasn’t lying because she really hadn’t *personally* seen one – only recordings.

Well, they said the skin of the ship *now* uses Vorlon tech… presumably, knowing the Vorlons, their technology is designed only to kick in and betray its presence only when it’s absolutely necessary.

<<<<And why, if the minbari had space craft a thousand years ago did Delenn never see a shadow ship? Space flight then movies?>>
What DaveShufon said. Also, over a thousand years a great deal of info can be lost (they didn’t have any pictures of Valen and few records of that war). We have no way of knowing what struggles and catastrophes hit Minbari society in the meantime. (Maybe all the records got destroyed in a fire while the Librarian was doing his scheduled ten hour meditation which can’t be interrupted or you have to start over. Maybe Valen took a torch to everything so that the records would be lost as they were supposed to be. Remember how secretive the Minbari are, even within their own society, about giving information to anybody… even Delenn complained in Divided Loyalties. It would be easy for the records to be lost with so few copies.)

<<I’ve been wondering this for awhile: Are all Minbari and Centauri white? I don’t recall ever seeing a black Minbari or Centauri…or one of any other color than pale white.>>

I’d be surprised if there was much racial differentiation with the Centauri. Racial separation here on Earth was aided by our planet’s geography. The continents were just close enough in places that groups were able to migrate between them so humans were spread accross the planet, but they were removed enough from each other so that evolution could begin to introduce changes into the various groups.

Centauri Prime has only two large continents, apparently on opposite sides of the planet. The Centauri evolved on one of those continents and another sentient race called the Xon evolved on the other. These two races didn’t finally discover the other continents (and the other race) until they had advanced to the point where they could build ships that could travel those long distances. I’m guessing that they would have been at about the stage that the Europeans were when Columbus sailed. When the two races met, they both decided that they had to destroy the other. After a protracted war, the Centauri wiped out the Xon. The reason I’m even bringing this up is that if the Centauri evolved on only one continent until they reached the point where they could sail around the world, then there may not have been enough geographic separation to foster great racial differences.

I doubt the White Star adapts the same way the Borg are supposed to. THe Borg, don’t forget, are supposed to be parodies.

The White Star simply watches the tactics of the enemy and learns how to avoid that enemy in the future by anticipating what that enemy will do. It isn’t foolproof, but over time it should work fairly well. Of course, if the Shadows also do the same thing, soon both sides will do a lot of dancing but no actual damage…I believe one of the Tom Baker Dr Who episodes had something like this between the Daleks and the Dreadlocks (or whatever they were called).

Now if this is correct, then why does Sheridan’s body disappear from the present? This would indicate that his entire body is transported into the future, not just his mind. Dear JMS,

1. I just saw “The Gathering” a little while back, it was a great start off to the series in my opinion. Would’ve liked it if Takashima continued on, she’d make a great thread in the arc. But I was wondering and this has been nagging me: Why, for the exact beginning of this whole, wonderful, seires did you give LONDO the opening narration. You don’t see him for awhile anyways, is there some hidden reason as to why you gave to him?

2. You’ve said that “Walkabout” and “Grey 17 is Missing” are more stand-alone episodes but follow some of the arc, while “Shadow Dancing” and “Z’Ha’Dum” are huge arc stories. What about “And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place.” What type of story would you call that? Is it more stand alone or is it more of an arc-story that prequels “Shadow Dancing” I don’t want to know what it is about, just what kind of story it is.

Thanks,

Perhaps “races” in other species have nothing to do with color. Maybe with the Centari it’s hairline. With the Minbari it could be the shape of the head bone. With others it could be scent, height, markings, vocal pitch or speech patterns. Just because Earth is historically obsessed with skin color doesn’t mean others would zero in on that particular difference.

If you think the people on B5 are just “wonderbread”–look again.

JMS said that the last 3 episodes are tied together in a way that is similar to the mid season trio of “Messages From Earth”, “Point Of No Return” and “Severed Dreams”. So it’s safe to say that “And The Rock Cried Out…” is an important episode, one you do not want to miss ……

Actually, that’s not true at all. I’m not going to go through listing all the characters that are minorities, that would be rather pointless. I know at least one actress, Mira Furlan, is from the former Yugoslavia. I don’t know much about the others. I also noticed that many of the humans we see in the background around the station are wearing clothing with a decidedly African look to it. I think this is kinda neat, and also show great attention to detail, to have come up with fads and fashions that might occur around 2260.

How about getting Whoopie Goldberg on as a guest? She’d prolly be too expensive too, but it would be a nice crossover, since she was a regular on STNG for a couple years…mebbe she could be the good doctors sister, cousin, etc..?

Would be neat I think.

Well my question is now that we discovered a while ago that The Shadows are scared of Psychics, will we be seeing more of the Psy. Core? And will Talia Winters ever come back even after she was dominated by the “spirit” And what level of Psy. is Litta (I think that’s her name. The one who put the word into Talia’s head.) I always thought she was like P-12 or something. Well thanx a lot for reading this!

Dear JMS,

1. With the constant long, summer, wait I spend my time in the Lurkers Guide. In one place you mentioned that the Shadows did have ONE big “achiles-heel” now we know that they don’t like telepaths. Is THAT what you were referring to? Or will we find out later this season that they’re afraid of something much bigger.

2. We’ve been kept off balance here with what will happen at the end of season 3. Tell us, because we’re prepared for some big plot twists (and I’m sure we’ll all be shocked) in the last two seasons can we expect more of this twisting and startling revelations??? Or from the end of season 3 will we ready to know what we’re fighting and the last two seasons will tell it all.

Forgive me if I am mistaken, but it seems to me that Franklin is the only major character of color in the lineup. I don’t consider characters like the Asian captain in Severed Dreams to be “major” characters. I also did not see the first season, so I may have missed a character that departed. Sinclair, Sheridan, Ivanova, Garibaldi, Corwin, Bester, Zack, Talia, Morden, Lyta, and (it seems) Anna are white with American accents, and Marcus has a British accent (let me know if I’ve missed any major-character humans). This seems pretty homogenous.
I’m actually surprised I brought this up, because I really don’t like “laundry-list” casts (like Trek–“we need one of these, and one of these…”). I find it heavy-handed and condescending. However, I don’t know how I would feel if I were a person of color watching B5. Perhaps someone with more personal insight can help me out on this one.
BTW, I’m not sure what Mira being from the former Yugoslavia has to do with representation of minorities, except perhaps that she is from another country. I don’t know her ethnic background, so it may be that she was considered an ethnic minority in the area of Yugoslavia she was in (however, I think this is really splitting hairs).
JMS: I’d be curious if you have ever been approached on the topic of casting before.

Answer this question, as for as I know the white race on the earth is 11 percent of the world population. The question we should be asking if this is suppose to be what the furture is like, what in the world happen to where most of the people from earth and around are mostly white. How did 11 percent become the majority .

Let’s not get into PC discussion here. I’m sure JMS will cast good actors and actresses when he finds good performance, regardless of their skin color or other persuasion! Remember Paul Terrell (Gen. Franklin)? Heck, he’s always been a great character actor. In B5 he plays Earthforce with a Face. And then thee was Jason Ironheart, the Telepath who “evolved” into something greater.

The original question dealt with why there no “black” Minbari. As I believe JMS sees it, the other races have marked physical differences between the sexes and within each sex. For example, male Minbari bone structures are more jagged than females, but some Minbari have different skin coloring (darker or lighter shades of blue, I think) just around those bone structures. Not all Narn have the same mottled skin coloring. Same with the Centauri (and we KNOW they have SIX!)

As I have stated in a previous post, Humanity’s diversity not only in color, but in culture, makes us what we are and this is why Humanity built such stations as we did….NONE of the other races could have!

The white population will likely remain, if not the majority, then the largest minority in space in the foreseeable future. THe reason is simple- white people have the money and technology. THe question is not why arent there more blacks on B5, it’s why arent there more asian? THe Pacific Rim is quite rapidly reaching the money part of the equation and will shortly reach the technology part. Thus far, space flight has been almost exclusively white because the US and USSR are mostly white. I imagine China and Japan will change that shortly after the beginning of the next century.

Only Garibaldi would make quite a different gesture towards Oliver North and Gerry Faldwell! And Ivanova as the correspondant (Ala Franken or Chris Rock) would be interesting… “Have you ever had a homo-erotic dream? Has Shamu had an abortion? Do Pro-Lifers party down?”
And how ’bout that sock to the face Al gave Arianna? WHAM! Of course, with Musante there, it would be quite a different story.

I have to disagree with this statement. There is quite a bit of diversity among the B5 crew. It certainly has more black pivitol characters than Star Trek ever did. There are Black generals, doctors, good guys, bad guys and alot of the races are played by Black actors (Okay we haven’t seen any Black Minbari yet but not every race is the same. B5 also includes Hispanics which are often left off the cast list of other shows. Asians also abound. Maybe you haven’t noticed because unlike Star Trek’s original series (I’m NOT dissing just comparing ) , which granted was written in a much different era, B5 sees well beyond the amount of Melanin in a persons skin.

Ivanova has been in every ep, according to Claudia Christian. But being in the ep, doesn’t mean you’re doing anything meaningful. Does parking spaceships ring a bell?
I realize it’s an ensemble cast, but it just seemed to me that with the Doctor sitting in on their secret meetings that he was saying a lot of stuff Ivanova should have really been saying, and she was sitting in the background trying to look intense.
I’m sure it’s difficult to balance dialogue between characters this way, but I still feel that Susan’s gotten the short end of the stick, with the male cast members getting a lot more dialogue.
I have great hopes for this season, as it appears that Susan in going to be right in the middle of the action, going by the last several eps of last season.

I have to take some exception to this post. Every episode has Ivanova doing something, but she can’t be doing that exceptional in every episode. This isn’t the “Susan Ivanova Show” and I don’t think Claudia has any illusions about that.

<<I realize it’s an ensemble cast, but it just seemed to me that with the Doctor sitting in on their secret meetings that he was saying a lot of stuff Ivanova should have really been saying, and she was sitting in the background trying to look intense.>>

It seems like you haven’t seen the arc episodes of Season 3. She’s very proactive in several episodes, not just looking intense (cf. “Voices of Authority”, “Ship of Tears”, “Severed Dreams”). And it’s Ivanova’s nature to be more cautious and observant and INFORMED. She’s more likely to watch or be in the know (cf. “Matters of Honor”) while Franklin is emotional and uninformed, a result of being in Medlab all the time and being on stims.

I expect Susan will be featured in the show more towards season three’s end as things come to a terrible turning point.

True Ivanova sits back and looks intense a lot – but when she does have active dialogue or is central to the theme she plays it well, and often the part is meaningful. Harbourmistress or whatever term could be an awsome responsibility. After all what is the primary function of the station but commerce. Different configurations, needs, propulsion systems that might incidentally clash. Customs problems etc . . . I don’t think she’s being slighted in the least by being given day to day operational control.

Otherwise Ivanova appears to be an excellent listener, and judging from her responses is doing anything but sitting idly. She is storing the imput like a sponge and processing it. When the time for action arrives as in her star fury she is decisive. What I get the impression of is a woman who likes action and is bored by long winded meetings and speakers.

I believe that JMS has said that the designs in the Minbari bone crest (which I think he referred to as a “crown”) where actually CARVED into the bone. So you think caucasians are only 11 percent of the world’s population?!? That would put their numbers at only about 550 million. You can’t be serious!! There’s over 250 million people just in the USA alone. Now I know we have a lot of minorities here, but the largest group by far are still caucasion. And I think the population of Europe is over 750 million. Again, mostly caucasion (but of course not all). That doesn’t count all the white people in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the Russian far east and many other places. And all those who make up minorities in other countries where Europeans have migrated to.

I’m not trying to defend the fact that not enough non-caucasion faces have been used in TV and movies. But I think your figure of 11% is way, way off.

If C & C were located at the axis point on the station, that might be easy to do, but, the docking bay is there. C & C is located above the docking bay, so you would need a “pinwheel” larger than the set to get the proper effect. A CGI starfield for the window would be expensive, so, they go with what they got.

Dreadnought was the worst because if any one could just build it then their fleet would be undefeatable. Another thing, if the Shadow fleet is so powerfull then how did the Minbari fight them a thousand years ago? And why, if the minbari had space craft a thousand years ago did Delenn never see a shadow ship? Space flight then movies? not the evolution of technology that comes to mind. I love the show but sometimes its still out there.”

Actually, intelligent learning systems are not *out there*. This is definitely the future and many
of them already exist. ABS braking is an input responsive system. Just beginning, true, but I would be surprised if it takes until the 2200″s to have some major security systems that are “AI”.
The thing that keeps them from being unstoppable is the same thing that keeps anything from
being invulnerable and/or unstoppable. There’s always a faster gun out there somewhere. Anything that can be invented, can be circumvented.

<< Answer this question, as for as I know the white race on the earth is 11 percent of the world population. >>

So, then, white MALES constitute only 5.5 percent of the world population. Sounds like they should qualify for affirmative action. 😉

Seriously, though, if we’re going to concentrate more on why we are DIFFERENT from one another than on why we are SIMILAR, the United States and the rest of the world are going to wind up just like Bosnia — bombed back into the stone age because of people “getting their own back” for wrongs that were perpetrated by people’s ancestors hundreds of years ago.

My hopes are that one day we really won’t become color BLIND but color APPRECIATIVE, and enjoy our differences not as a division but as cultural and biological enrichment. Just as we appreciate different breeds of cats and dogs and birds, how much more should we appreciate the differences in PEOPLE — our racial and cultural backgrounds, our different languages and their associated different ways of looking at the world.

Meanwhile, are there modern-day wrongs to correct? Of course there are (unfortunately). But fixing BLAME won’t make things better, only increase the divisiveness. We need to find a different, more productive approach.

From: ProfsrFate

1) Obviously, everyone who has mentioned the premise that alien racial variations might differ from humanity’s are on target.

2) Does this mean that an actor of African descent could not PLAY THE ROLE of a Mimbari or Centauri? I doubt that’s the case, although under the “alien” makeup, you might not easily recognize an actor as a member of a specific ethnic group (would you recognize Peter Jurasik walking down the street?) …… and IF by some UNLIKELY rationale, the makers of B5 are not casting actors of certain races as aliens, remember, B5 has been very open to minority actors in human roles….. roles that could have easily gone to white actors.

3) My one question then, when it comes to humans on B5, is: “Where are the Chinese?????”
Asia has been well represented. There have been at least 6 Japanese characters written for the show, but for the life of me, I can’t remember a single Chinese character(!) That’s a quarter of humanity for cripesakes! I would also suspect that in the coming centuries that the population of India will also be major players on the stage of science/space/technology… so there’s my analysis of the ethnic question….. more Chinese and Indian characters would be realistic…..

Thanks to all the folks making the show!
Looking forward to Season 4!!!!

All the best!

Tom Baker, from what I have read, has gone back to his roots. He is devoting much of his time to the stage. He appeared on British stage as Sherlock Holmes. (Makes me wish I had the money to just jump up, go to London, and see some plays.)

Just remember that we saw him on PBS. If it wasn’t for PBS, we may have never seen him. He is after all a British actor and may have appeared on lots of British TV, of which we have never seen.

To MacManJWS and SHedr24734. See my post on white actors playing Klingons in blackface, even in the original series. You still have not answered my question,

PS
Micheal Dorn is black, so unless he played Worf in whiteface it doesn’t really matter how dark his makeup was when he started.

I don’t think people worry too much more about what’s appropriate here now that JMS doesn’t seem to bother. (One post from him about how he’d come back if this folder were kept clear of all but questions for him would probably be enough, at least for me, but I don’t think he has the time for the nets that he did, so I don’t think most people care much what’s in here anymore.)

That would depend on whether or not there are supposed to be Minbari that color. (There are black Centauri; I’ve seen them in the background) Wouldn’t it be a boring universe if ALL humanoid races came in the same spectrum of colors as humans? (I guess thinking “no” is the definition of championing “diversity” – go figger)
But I think that the story, not quotas, should be first consideration. To be honest, I thought (assuming this story is true) JMS blew it when he changed the rules to allow Minbari to have facial hair because that prima dona actor in “Points of Departure” (whose performance was pretty run of the mill at best) refused to shave that straggly-2-days-to-grow-back-excuse-of-a-beard.

Of that list, only Koloth was a “white Klingon”… and he stopped being one when he came back for DS9. (That tribble remake has a lot of explaining to do… including (with all due respect to Michael Ansara’s creative answer in this week’s tv guide) why very young Klingons like Worf and Alexander look like “modern”, not “TOS.”)

My question concerns the son that we all now know these two characters WILL have. Will he be raised as a human, or as Minbari? Presumably he will have a “Minbari” soul, due to his mothers’ genes, but, our human society at least, puts more emphasis on the fathers’ culture raising the male child. I am not sure in which direction I’m leaning, . . just thought I’d ask.

Actually, I think John Schuck’s character in Trek IV (?) might have been white. I don’t remember him being particularly swarthy. And I don’t think the early characters were in “blackface” so much as yellow/brown face. As a kid, my impression of Klingons, esp. Kang was pretty much Fu Manchu/Ming the Merciless. I think they’ve gotten darker as they’ve gotten older.

Just a comment – I don’t think there needs to be “black” Minbari anymore than there needed to be “black” Vulcans or anything else. In Trek’s universe, esp. people on entire planets tend to be the same exact genotype. It’s like saying “why aren’t there any black Asians?” Why aren’t there blue Minbari or green Centauri or whatever?

Given: a Minbari cycle may be a little longer than 1 earth year (1.3?) and that she started out in the GC in a “support” ? capacity in 2232 and full participant in 2239 in a job that was supposed to be for life (like our Supreme Court) the Earth Minbari war was in 2245.

How long does it take for the GC to decide that someone in a support capacity is ready for full membership and in Dukhat’s case, evaluating someone as a potential successor?

If she became a full member in 2239, 6 years before the E-M war, and by that time (2239) Dukhat’s designated heir, could she have been chosen over other GC members with more years experience? Hedroon looks older, as does Rathenn (sic). Neroon looks more her age. Those are the only GC members we know. Does her selection indicate she was considered by Dukhat to be an exceptional candidate?

thanks!

JMS,

Thank you for providing such a thought-provoking show. You certainly have provoked a few thoughts in me….. :^)

In Soul Hunter, Delenn tells Sinclair that the Mimbari believe that when they die their souls return to Mimbar to be recombined with other Mimbari souls be reborn, thereby enriching the entire race. Now, this explains how, when the Grey Council examined Sinclair’s soul and the souls of other pilots, Mimbari souls were evident either in whole or in part. Basically then, Mimbari souls develop not only as individuals, but as a race; rather than as human/Terran souls develop, which is strictly as individuals. This combination of souls *could* therefore occur as new human souls develop–i.e. the Mimbari soul either is born whole or is blended with whatever makes up a new human soul. This also leads me to wonder about several questions regarding Mimbari souls:

1) Valen/Sinclair: When Valen died 900 years earlier, was his soul recombined with other Mimbari souls? This would make sense in that his soul would not have existed at that time, although whatever pieces of his soul made up Sinclair could have come from that recombination. On the other hand, if Valen is being held in some form of stasis to be returned later during this Shadow War (as others have postulated on this board), that also would prevent any *interference* with Sinclair’s soul. Moreover, when was Sinclair’s soul born as human? It would make the most sense to have that occur when Sinclair was born, and no sense to have that occur immediately after Valen’s death–Sinclair’s Mimbari soul would have relatively little time to be Mimbari.

2) Delenn: What happens to Delenn’s soul at her death since she is now human? Will her soul return to Mimbar to rejoin the Mimbari? Is her soul now human and therefore destined to be reborn as human? Is it now covered under the *rules* of human soul development and therefore will be given a choice at her death?

3) Human/Mimbari: What now happens to the Mimbari souls born in whole or in part in humans? In WWE, Delenn says that the door has been closed–but that begs the question on the destiny of those Mimbari souls. The Mimbari population was reduced during the previous 1,000 years; although it won’t be reduced reduced, will it now increase?

(Strange thoughts, I know–but Babylon 5 brings out a lot of different stuff for different people–hehe.)

My best to you and yours, and keep up the good work!

With Light and Love,
The Lady T Rides On….

That very well may be true, and I do take your word for it, however, that still does not answer the question. Once again, and to restate it a little more clearly, why is it that people ask why there are no black Minbarri or Vulcans (setting aside the insultingly obvious token we have now) but nobody asks why there are no white Klingons.

Regarding the post on “some reality please”. Someone once said (or wrote) that any technology well in advance of our own would look to us like magic. Imagine bringing someone from 100 years ago to our present. Almost all our technology would seem like magic to him (like a cellular phone). Now try the same exercise using 200 years ago as your benchmark. Now try it going 200 years into the future. Therefore, IMHO, the job of the sci-fi writer is not to predict an accurate future, but to create a universe and stay within the bounds that he (or she) set for it. And keep the characters behavior consistent with the story and their development or lack thereof.

If Superman can go back in time whenever he wants to (to save Lois Lane in one story), then you have to live with your decision and allow him to go back in time anytime he needs to to solve a mystery, capture a criminal or prevent a catastrophe.

I like the fact that B5, wisely, seems never to fall into that trap.

many of todays realities were first invented in SF. The pocket calculator was proposed by Asimov, and satellites were in space in fiction long before they were reality. even holodecks aren’t that far in our future. Let’s hear it for imagination, the stuff the future is made of! B5 is helping man make a giant leap (even in the basics of improving computer FX). Thank you JMS!

Thank you for making science fiction drama what it should be. Thrilling, thought provoking, and too darned hard to go without. 4 weeks are better than the 4 months we’ve have had to endure (I know it’s not your fault. WB can be a real pain) but it is still too long. Keep it up for another 44 episodes (or should i say 49 since we haven’t seen them yet.) I have a suggestion for your next program. A comedy. you do such wonderful comic moments, I think you would be great with an sci fi comedy. Thanks again.

Yes, JMS, congrats on the Hugo. Well deserved. When I consider that episodes like “Severed Dreams” and “Interludes” will be eligible next year….well, the rest of them can just stay home.

Were you supprised by the degree to which the people World Con turned out to be such a pro-B5 crowd? I don’t know how many people were turned away from your appearance on Saturday, and the one poor guy who was selling B5 merchandise was literally cleaned out by Sunday.

One more thing: What is the deal with the number 14? Consider:

“Voice In The Wilderness” Missiles fired from fissure in “Sector 14″

“Babylon Squared” B4 vanishes and reappears in “Sector 14″

“Coming Of Shadows” Shadows attack Narn outpost in “Quadrant 14″

Is it because, if you total up those three “14’s,” you get 42, the answer to the ultimate question of Life, The Universe and Everything?

Or where there other 14’s that I missed?

I want to know!

In Confessions and Lamentations, Delenn tells Sheridan that if she dies in the Markab quarantine area, she and John will meet again at the end of the physical universe in “the place where

JMS

there are several outstanding questions I’ve never seen resolved and wonder if you will ever address them. I suspect there are others, but these stand out in my mind:

1) In the B5 interactive kit, it says that the relationship between Delenn and Kosh is a “secret”

2) Chrysalis: Delenn went to Kosh, he showed her something in his suit and she said she would keep the promise she made. Will we ever know what she saw and what promise she kept?

3) also, will we ever know ALL the reasons Delenn went into the chrysalis?

4) All Alone in the Night: John’s dream, will we ever know what it meant?

thanks!

BarrieJ, I’m not JMS (hardly!) but since he’s been rather scarce around here lately and I do know *some* of the answers to your questions, I figured I’d give it a try…

Chrysalis: Delenn went to Kosh, he showed her something in his suit and she said she would keep the promise she made. Will we ever know what she saw and what promise she kept?

He showed her his “true” form as Valeria to her. Since she found out his “identity” as it were, she went ahead with the transformation. I suspect that the promise was to fulfill her part of the prophecy. Filling in the blanks based on other comments of JMS, Kosh knew about Sinclair being Valen from his (Sinclair’s) arrival on B4 a thousand years hence. Therefore, he probably knew the story of what was to be and therefore wanted to make sure Delenn would do her transformation, thereby keeping the future he knew of intact.

ll Alone in the Night: John’s dream, will we ever know what it meant?

jms has said elsewhere that by the end of this season (3), we’ll know all the whys and wherefores of the dream. I have a feeling that it’ll all come out in the last two episodes.

Hope that helps…

I am also not JMS, but I can add a bit more to your questions:

>1) In the B5 interactive kit, it says that the relationship between Delenn and Kosh is a “secret”

That B5 Interactive Kit was made before the first season. As I recall, in the pilot Delenn says that the Minbari know very little about the Vorlons – but is seen bowing to Kosh near the end of the show. Eventually, of course we found out that the Minbari know quite a bit more than Delenn originally admitted to. That was the secret.
>2) Chrysalis: Delenn went to Kosh, he showed her something in his suit and she said she would >keep the promise she made. Will weever know what she saw and what promise she kept?

JMS has said that she just wanted to be sure that the Vorlons were who she thought they were, not some pretenders
