I think that cloaky-thingy he wears is like a duster or something, you know, those coats with the shoulder
tiers that aussies wear. I agree that it does add to the whole romantic notion. . .
On an entirely unromantic note, we decided the other night that Marcus looks like Jesus. :-)

When he entered, Marcus seemed the weary character who knew he was on the losing end but sticking it out
due to sheer stubbornness. He didn’t seem to really believe in why he was in the army of light. He is much
easier and committed now…maybe he just needed a good rest.
What was his backstory by the way–his brother was a Ranger but killed, so he signed on?

It seems to me that the concept of the rangers has roots in the mystical

middle ages cult “The tempelers ” , Knights for God so to speak, active during

the crusades to protect the ideals and even the properties of Christianity !

If I remember right the last Tempeler strong hold was in France, but it

was destroyed because local groups thought they were hoarding large amounts

of gold and other religious icons .

You are correct Ro, Ivanova was commanding the Agemmemnon when she ordered it to open fire on the
aliens that kidnapped Sheridan last season. I cant remember the name of the episode but I love the fact that
she didn’t even try to communciate with the aliens and just reacted out of emotion after seeing the prisoners
spaced and thereby thinking Sheridan dead.
Ivanova is an ass-kicker.

hi all,
well, I see that there is some interest in a fan organization based on the rangers. Give me some input guys.
Should there be a Ranger One? What should the groups themselves be called? Cells, like the concept of
resistance cells? I’ve got the idea that to gain membership(at least after the founding members establish
themselves) that a new member has to have at least two sponsors (sort of mirroring the secrecy of the “real”
Rangers.) Akin to Ivanova’s checking out the new officer with her questions about the coffee. Though roses
aren’t required<grin>. I’m a member of a Star Trek group devoted to the Romulans(I run the creative
writing end of things) and they have some good ideas about a group charter, goals and actions of its
members. Respect, honor, etc. For the Rangers, I’d add something about carrying the fight to the Shadows.

Any ideas?

I’ve never been involved in any groups, although anything based on the Rangers sounds fun. The one thing I
would suggest is that you keep the adventurous, romantic (and I don’t mean in the relationship sense) feel of
the Marcus character. That sort of devil-may-care-adventurer-with-a-serious-agenda persona is a big part of
the rangers’ appeal for me.

I’m going to answer my own question. The Narns I was thinking of remind more of Japanese Samuri. If the
Narns to join the rangers, I’ll bet that a majority will come from that group. If you can’t remember the group
I’m referring too, there was one who drew his sword on G’Kar when G’Kar had decided to turn himself in to
face war crime charges.

I agree about some of the Narn warriors being like samurai; Honor seems to be very big with them. Like
paying your debts and fulfilling all your obligations. I bet it would be interesting to have some Narn
rangers. As for the Rangers group, count me in, it’s a great idea. Marcus is great for the show, he
sometimes seems to act a release for tension. How can you be worried about all the bad things going on
when some lunatic is explaining your life in terms of the Ottoman Empire. Marvelous:)

Also the knights Templar were French in origin but accepted members regardless of nationality. They died

The Duendain were the last frontier, the last battalion, the last hope. They were the last thin line of defense.
The “Rangers,” this “Rangers,” are likewise that last thin line. Borrowed from Tolkien wholesale;
probably! But is that all wrong? Most great liturature borrows from what has gone before it as well!

I agree that there are certainly similarities between B5’s Rangers and the Knights Templar. The Templars
were an historic religious order of “warrior priests,” the Poor Knights of Christ of the Temple of Jerusalem.
Established to protect pilgrims and crusaders on their way to the Holy Land, the Templars were accountable
to none but the Pope. They ended up making their name and their wealth as financiers, and the Templar
treasure is legendary. They were destroyed by the Inquisition under the instigation of Philip IV of France,
who wanted to get his hands on all that moolah, but he never found it, and to this date, no one can say for
sure what happened to the treasure, or if it was earthly treasure at all. . .

kind of degenerated after that. Don’t you think he has the most striking green eyes?

Subj: O’HARE INTERVIEW – HERE NOW
Date: 4/21/96 3:24:43 PM
From: SciFiTalk
Posted on: America Online

Since our very first airing of Sci-Fi Talk radio program to the present, Michael O’Hare
has been a part of our history appearing for a series of interviews. We recently about
his two part episode, War Without End and his future on Babylon Five..

T^2: When did you find you that you were coming back to do an episode of Babylon
Five ?

MO: I heard hints about it in the fall, but I found out about it in early winter through
my agent.

T^2: What kind of details did you get ?

MO: I knew that it was going to be a two parter and I didn’t know much beyond that.

T^2: What was it like the very first day ?

MO: People were very nice to me. It was like old home week. Very friendly. Very nice
indeed.

T^2: I understand that some of the guest stars from Babylon Squared, Tim Choate
and Kent Broadhurst were in the episode ?

MO: It was great to see them. Tim is a wonderful actor.

T^2: The basic plot without giving anything away ( Michael laughs) is that Ambassador
Sinclair returns to Babylon Five to bring back Babylon Four through time ?

MO: It does have to do with time travel..I’m not going to give more than that away.
I’ve been a good boy all these years without giving away all of Joe’s ( Michael
Straczynski ) plots and I will be honorable to the last on that. Watch it this month.

T^2: I heard all went well between you and Bruce Boxlietner

MO: Oh Yeah, he’s a great guy.

T^2: What will we see as far as Sinclair and Sheridan together.

MO: You’ll see us kidding around a little bit and working together. I can’t think of any
other way to put it.

T^2: Did you go through a costume change ?

MO: I’m dressed like a waiter in an Arabian restaurant.

T^2: What kind of climate is Minbaur ?

MO: Very ethereal..a little bit like the land of OZ..The look of it but I didn’t see alot of it
since alot of post production work goes into that afterwards. I can only gather what’s
written in the script describing the matte scenes and all that.

T^2: How has Sinclair changed since last we saw him ?

MO: He’s more reserved..he’s more spiritual..he’s on the other side of the post
traumatic post syndrome that he was dealing with in the first season…he’s more
spiritual, I would repeat that again. More calm, if you will.

T^2: Do you think that his experience with the Minbauri was a major event in his life ?

MO: Yes, I think so. It’s come out already and I’m not telling any tales out of school to
say that his soul is a Minbauri soul. There is one early scene in the two episodes that
implies that the Sinclair character has been involved in very spiritual stuff beyond
Ranger work.

T^2: Would you call this an action packed episode ?

MO: They pulled out all the stops. Very strong visually with alot of special effects.

T^2: It had come out in the internet and in our newsletter that you had shot the
episode in January and how things were on the set.

MO: I am amazed..It’s a little scary to me, the internet..alittle like living in a small
town. I hear Michael O’ Hare bought a pack of Quaker Oats, the other day.

T^2: Joe Michael Straczynski seems to use the net real well.

MO: I gather alot of them (Producers) are on the net these days..But Joe was one of
the first ones to do it.

T^2: Would you consider being on line ?

MO: Every now and then, when I hear rumors I dispel them. But I
stay away from the net. But may everyone have a good time, God bless them.

T^2: How do you think this season is going ?

MO: I think things are going well and Bruce does a bang up job…an excellent job.

T^2: Anything going on these days ?

MH: Besides being the voice for Volvo as the back up guy to Donald Sutherland, I
have made alot of public appearances. I will be in Williamsport in May and England in June. One
advantage that they have in England is that they show the entire season in order. It helps build momentum
for the show. It’s very popular in England. scifitalk@aol.com

Much as I love Marcus, I recently rewatched Ceremonies and was disturbed by the way he echoed the
terrorist in the same episode. The bad guy talks about killing a Minbari starting at the fingers, then in the
bar fight scene, Marcus tells his victim something like “How about if I start by breaking your fingers?”
Marcus is a WONDERFUL character, but he has the potential to spin out of control. He truly is a berserker,
albeit a charming one. He, much more than Garibaldi, should have said that he’s scared all the time about
losing control.
BTW, his out-of-control side is such a good contrast to Ivanova’s hyper-controlled character. Both are
dangerous soldiers, but in such opposite ways.

You are right about Marcus, but I think he said it all when he tells Lennier that his instructors thought he
had a lot of repressed anger. Garibaldi’s fear of losing control stems from his alcoholism (I know plenty of
former alcoholics, and control is ALWAYS an issue,) whereas Marcus strikes me as the kind of person who
doesn’t always face the things that people observe about him (like the repressed anger remark.) Marcus’
anger is the kind of anger that I think each of us is capable of given the proper circumstances (which
fortunately we may never have to face,) while the Night Watch psycho’s anger and violence are the cold and
calculating acts of a truly disturbed individual. Of course this does not excuse Marcus’ singlehanded
destruction of a bar, but it does put it into perspective.

See, I can talk about him without gushing!

Myth, I agree that Marcus has the potential to spin out of control. However, his “beserker” side seems to
stem from his passionate, highly emotional nature, rather than an undercurrent of anger
or stress or desperation, as seems to be the case with Garabaldi. If Marcus represses anything, I imagine it’s
for a very short time–he strikes me as a character given to big, dramatic gestures, with an innate flair for
what we would describe as romantic…you know, the sort to rage wildly at one time and bring a gift of hand
written poetry the next. Perhaps he chose that outfit (cf “Ah, Marcus” discussion!) expressly for its
theatrical effect!

Very astute observation, Myth! It’s probably not an accident that there are parallels between the kidnapper’s
choice of words and Marcus’. It emphasizes that many of the Rangers, Marcus especially, are people living
on the edge, organized lurkers really, who are successful at what they do precisely because they *are*
dangerous!
I also think that the comparison between the two shows the fine line between controlled and uncontrolled
violence, and that Marcus walks that fine line. He’s more dangerous than Garibaldi because the latter
*knows* he might go out of control, and guards against it. I don’t think that Marcus, bless his berserking
heart, is that self-aware. Yet!

Julia, while I agree with you that Marcus is definitely dramatic/romantic by nature, I think that this also
functions as a mask for emotions and/or deep anger that Marcus himself may not want to or be able to face
about himself. I hope that we see more of the “dark man” beneath the light-hearted demeanor. . .

Ok, folks, here’s the dream I had last night (I’m rather disturbed that I’m dreaming about a TV show, but any
dream about Marcus can’t be all bad!). As actual plot, it’s full of holes (a veritable Swiss cheese), but it’s
kinda fun to think about:

As we know, Marcus has been avoiding rebirth ceremonies for a while. He’s deathly afraid of revealing a
secret about himself. It turns out that he, too, is a latent telepath and is dreadfully afraid of being exposed.
This makes Franklin’s remark that he and Ivanova are so completely dissimilar very ironic and opens the
door to a more complex relationship between Ivanova and Marcus.

That’s it. Now why do I dream about plot complications when I dream about Marcus? You’d think my
subconscious could come up with something better than that!

An ambiguous topic, I admit.
What I’m really curious about is what men think about Marcus. I asked my husband if he liked the character
of Marcus, and he said that he thought he was a bit of a wuss. Now, pound-for-pound, Marcus can beat up
more people than any other human on the station, so I don’t quite see how he’s “wussy.”
I have found that men don’t seem to like this character much. It’s a shame (and rather telling) that the one
character that seems to embody so many of the qualities (intelligence, humor, romanticism) that women of

Okay, I cornered my husband and ASKED him. He said that Marcus can be annoying, but he has nothing
against him (read: he doesn’t think he’s a wuss or anything.) David has a streak of the romantic soldier
about him (aside from the fact that he is actually in the army,) and I think he’s one of the last remaining true

After a few days off the boards, I have returned with this succulent scenario: Because of his contacts with
the “non-official” population of B5, Marcus is assigned the task of working undercover in a downbelow
bar–to unmask a vile spy. Imagine our hero’s shock when he discovers he now has a job at the Intersteller
Chippendales! Nevertheless, the ever-loyal Ranger gamely performs for a club full of screaming women,
appearing between “Dirk the Space Docker
(and his Zero Gravity Tool)” and the winner of the 2257 “Mr. Centari Competition.”
I see this as a potential fundraiser for Babylonian Productions, as they could stop that silly “Mystery Alien”
contest and simply auction off the roles of extras in the club.

One thing really bugged me about our dear Marcus in the Avalon episode. He has this deep conversation
with Franklin (and with others in past episodes, too) and all he talks about is HIS pain, HIS terrors, etc.
Here he is talking with a guy who’s wrestling with a private hell, and Marcus is too self-absorbed to tune
into any of Franklin’s anguish. Marcus needs to get over it already (as Delenn has noted) and look more
deeply at the people he has pledged his life with.

For a guy who’s wrestling with a private hell, Franklin sure hides it well. Marcus can’t read minds — how is
he supposed to pick up on what’s happening with Franklin? After all, none of the others like Ivanova or
Garibaldi, who interact more closely with Franklin realize anything’s wrong.

I think you’re wrong there. Comments have been made about Franklin’s use of stims, and, if I remember
correctly, Garibaldi actually tried to empathize with him.
It’s not that I think Franklin would confide in Marcus (he’s barely admitted it to himself), but I would like
Marcus to be a little less caught up in himself. It was great when Lennier told HIS secret to Marcus and
Marcus looked like someone had dumped cold water on his head (Oh, gee, someone else has problems
besides me!).
And I still think Marcus is a great character! Don’t get me wrong. Just a little friendly criticism.

In fact, Franklin raked Garibaldi over the coals for even suggesting that he was addicted to stims.

Marcus is a master of evasion. Delenn was right on when she intimated that he was running away from the
events that had caused him to become a Ranger. I think he is haunted by the things he has seen; your
memory can be your own worst enemy.

Now here’s a question for you: when I drew G’Kar the Red Knight, I drew him in his Narn clothing but
made some adjustments so that it is mostly red. What about Marcus as Percival? I would put him in chain

As I’ve watched B5 evolve as a story, I think its great Sci Fi to have a secret intellegance group created.
But as the months go by the writers have not given us any great accomplishments of the Rangers. Have
they found the Shadows home world? discovered new weapons or defenses… Did they get video and scans
of the Shadows destoying the Narn? or now in recent shows, them fighting other aliens. Have they
devised any miltary statagies? The Alliance that is preparing to fight the Shadows already have lost the
Narn and thier warships, the Centary will either be neutral or enemies. And earth government ,military
and Sycore, are unkowningly already under control of the Shadows.. Captain Sheridan should be very
nervous. And start demanding results. He needs very convincing evidence to present to the earthforces still
loyal to the criminal Clark government. Because if Earth Force stands by, as world by world is take over
by the Shadows. Eventually The Shadows will take Mimbar and the Centary homeworld and Earth
I hope the writers come up with good stories to save the day. Dean2100
Any thoughts?

On this same topic, I asked in the Ask JMS #7 folder:
“Since all the massed forces of the Light can’t seem to do much against the Shadows, and everyone knows
about the Shadows now, just *what is* the job of the Rangers? Information about the Shadows now seems
to be exchanged openly among the players, so they don’t seem to have much value as a covert intelligence
force. Unless they have some secret weapon, I don’t really see that they’re going to go up against the
Shadows themselves sometime soon. So just what are they supposed to be doing, other than looking
romantic (which is OK with me, but probably not enough to earn a paycheck)?”

JMS responded:

“The job of the Rangers takes on a different aspect now that stuff is in the open, at least to some extent;
you’ll find it by season’s end.

I though Marcus’ reaction to Ranger 1 in WWE1 was interesting. He looks at Sinclair with respect, but not
with hero worship, able to joke about Sinclair’s cryptic sayings in front of Sinclair. His reaction to the “I
am like an arrow” statement was revealing. He realized, just as Delenn did, that Sinclair would somehow
become Valen, that the basis for the Rangers wasn’t myth, but reality.

Marcus’ “secret”, which kept him from 2 Rebirth ceremonies, is that he doesn’t *believe* in the basis for
their society the way the others believe. He entered the Rangers out of respect for his brother, stayed in
because he is dedicated, and because the Rangers filled a void, but he doesn’t have the “inner fire”. He has
not found a cause or a new family he is willing to die for -yet.

It should be interesting to watch his transformation. Once he finds his cause, he will be on fire. (Jason, if
you’re lurking, nice job.)

Jason… if you’re lurking… yes, we’re a bunch o’ birds who drool & include words of praise. (Justly deserved,
of course!) I’ve always had a soft spot for a handsome man w/a sense of humor & a British accent.

Loved him in the tux in “The Sentinel.” Like I say, ‘there’s nothing like a man in a tux. Mmmm-hmmm.’
=b… (Tongue hanging out & drooling.) You can stop grinning now, Jason.

Can’t wait to talk to you on Tues!

Count me in for the Ranger group!

I think we’re overdue for more of Marcus. The bits we’ve seen are just enough to tantalize us. They suggest
that there’s a lot more to the character, but they don’t really let us see it. The deepest we’ve gotten, I think,
was in CoLD when he spoke to Delenn about his brother, but even that was unfinished, incomplete and
unsatisfying. There’s passion in him, and humor, and, I suspect, secrets. Come on, JMS, stop teasing us.

How about an episode that focuses on his Ranger activities. I’d love to see him in action against the

hi all,
i missed the Sentinel episode, Wahh! Got to catch the reruns. Anyway, I think the look that Marcus gave
Sinclair was because he hates to see people he cares for going off to do something obviously dangerous and
he can’t help/stop them. And to give everyone a bit of worry, there’s been some chat about if one of the
characters will die in the series. My husband and I would guess that if it would be anyone, it would be
Marcus. With his past, we can see him to be the one to sacrifice himself for another.

The work on the Rangers fan group is progressing nicely. Got a e-mail from the folk in charge of things
saying that they like the sense of community that the fans have. Any questions/comments/suggestions are
welcome.

Oh, and does anyone know the name of the episode where Sheridan says “I just wish it would rain.”?

With regard to the uniforms, I posted this fact to JMS some time ago, when we were discussing the fact that
Marcus only seems to have one suit of clothing. I commented that it seemed silly and counterproductive for
the Rangers to all be wearing a “uniform,” which is pretty much tantamount to wearing a bull’s eye on your
chest. Up until now, I would guess that the Rangers would have gone unnoticed (the “it’s a big galaxy, full
of people” thing,) but I would think that being noticed now would be unavoidable. Time for a costume

Am I the only one who has gotten a queasy feeling that Marcus may be a traitor, or at least have a dark, dark
side?? Maybe I’ve gone over too many of my videotapes but I’ve been distracted from my usual drooling
over Jason Carter’s good looks by several disturbing details.
In Ceremonies of Light and Dark, Marcus avoids the ceremony, and doubletalks (lies?) about his reasons
for not taking part. Sheridan, Ivanova, Garibaldi, Franklin all give something up. They and Lennier tell
something they’ve never told before. Marcus does neither.
The story Marcus tells about how he came to be a Ranger raises questions. At one point he says he joined
because his brother believed in it, but he never says he believes. And if the Shadows destroyed his whole
colony and everyone he loved, how did he escape? (Remember Z’ha’dum)
In WWE, just after Sinclair’s “arrow from the bow” speech, Sinclair sits in the chair and the camera in
closeup on Sinclair’s face changes focus to Marcus’ face over Sinclair’s shoulder. The look on Marcus’ face
is.. well, evil.
OK, explain to me why I’m wrong to worry.

From: AshTyr

I can’t speak for the look on Marcus’ face after Sinclair’s “arrow from the bow” speech (I have to go back
and watch the ep again), but I think I can ease your queasy feeling on the other counts.

Given your other examples, I think that what we’re seeing is not so much a possible traitor, but a man who’s
tormented by his own demons (hey, he’s got Guilt — who needs Shadows? <g>). Marcus is fighting for the
cause not because he’s in to “fight the good fight,” but for vengeance and atonement. His tangled feelings
about his brother are a heavy burden to carry, and I think that at first, Marcus had only his anger to sustain
him.
What I think we’re seeing now is a gradual shift from anger and thoughts of revenge to thinking that maybe,
just maybe, some causes are worth dying for simply because they are just. I think that the “Late Delivery
from Avalon” ep went along way to exploring that.

Marcus is still something of a wild card, it’s true. It remains to be seen which path he takes, and whether the
Shadow War makes or breaks him, IMHO.

I love conflicted characters!! :-)

I also wish to add my kudos to Jason Carter and the job he’s done with Marcus. While Sheridan and Delenn
are focused on the “big” picture (“the universe”), Marcus is concerned with the little people (“Lurkers”
“Arthur” “A fallen Minbari aide”). Jason does an excellent job portraying compassion for the people that
others do not see. Watch his face during “A Late Arrival from Avalon”: his concern for the Lurkers, the

Marcus speaks mimbari and could understand every word Sinclair was saying. I betting that the talk made

About no ceremonies etc… You have to consider that the character has been tramatised by his experiance. ”
A Part of the heart goes dead its better to leave it that way” he says in “Matters of Honor” he doesn’t want
to give any of himself to anything else. That and the fear of facing something he considers his responsiblity.

I think a lot of people misunderstand the purpose for Marcus in the B5 storyline. I believe that the Marcus
character is a voice for JMS. The story arc is now turning grim (the dark before the light) and any good
writer knows you have to lighten up the action a little bit so that the next blow hurts a little more. I think
Marcus’ one-liners are JMS’ way of lightening the action. He can say things that no other character can say.
However, JMS has not made him a one-dimensional character. He has made him one of the most caring
characters on the show. I for one want to see a lot more of him

Just for the record, I think Jason does a great job!!!

I also think that Delenn is probably pret-ty good with that fighting pike herself. You don’t make it to

A perfect Marcus fan fantasy episode (i.e., a favorite character gets the crap beat out of him while behaving
heroically all the while–fans can be such sadists)!

I loved the byplay between Lennier and Marcus and Lennier’s reaction to the bloody staff. He had, after all,
sent Marcus to his death (neither Marcus or Lennier expected him to win–only delay). He contrasts well
with Delenn, who, as he said, does not like to dwell on the fact that people will die during the battle.

The way this was said made me very uncomfortable — and I just have to call you on this one. I hope that
you meant that you find Marcus very attractive and find him a romantic figure; I *certainly* feel that same

Wouldn’t it be nice to see Jason in a romantic scene?

Does anyone know if jason carter actually did the fighting in this episode —- or was there a stunt double?
The fight scene was rather intense, which makes me wonder if the violence on the station (and being shown
on screen) is going to get more graphic. Carter did a fantastic job with this scene, you could almost feel the
rage and pain in “Marcus” from the expressions on his face.
I hope the fact that “Marcus” is now in “recovery” doesnt mean he will be “missing” from the next couple of
episodes.

AmberH was just continuing the tradition of undressing dear Marcus with our eyes. Who can forget those
halcyon days a few months ago when we all placed bets on what Marcus wore when he was sitting around
waiting for his one outfit to come back from the cleaners? (And for those of you who missed that
discussion, I would highly recommend going back and reading it!)
B5 engages our minds so much more than anything else on TV. Our ogling of Marcus is just our libidinous
way of enjoying the show on a slightly different level.

Spoiler space (no real plot elements, but a violence warning regarding an upcoming episode)

From what I’ve heard, there will be a graphically violent scene involving Franklin coming up in the next
couple of episodes. The BBC cut 4 seconds of it when it was shown in Britain (and when you count them
out, 4 seconds is a lot of time). Someone on the show (can’t remember who) said that this is not something
you want to watch with your kids.

I didn’t mean anything regarding rape or violation and I’m sorry you took it that way. I didn’t mean to upset
anyone! What I was actually saying was that instead of Marcus being all beat up on the outside by Neroon
but his clothes staying intact, it would have been nicer if his clothes had gotten shredded during the fight as
well…yes, I do find Marcus a romantic figure and very sexy, too. The scene was marvelous — I was just
adding a fantasy element to it that some of the ladies (and maybe some gentlemen) who frequent this board
would appreciate.

One thing that made the whole fight scene terribly sad for me as I was watching it, was that Marcus (and
Lennier, for that matter) knows that Neroon will kill him as soon as Lennier asks him for his help back in
his quarters. He knows he’s going to his death (despite his glib banter), and just hopes he can keep Neroon
busy long enough. This is the first time that we’ve seen Marcus in his true role as a Ranger. Rangers are
weapons in human form as well as spies, and, as Lennier reminds Delenn at the end of Grey 17, weapons
are expendable (as are spies, for that matter). It’s something that the Rangers know; now we have to see if
Delenn will be able to accept that knowledge as Entil’zha (or however you spell it).

This part of the premise reminded me of the original “Rocky” film — where Rocky has a chance to box with
the champ, and KNOWS he’s not good enough to win, but if he can train and get into really great shape, he
can last for several rounds instead of getting knocked out in the first one.

As Lennier pointed out, all Marcus had to do was delay Neroon long enough for the ceremony to complete,
he didn’t have to win the fight. In fact, he didn’t even need to fight — just cause enough delay. But it was
Marcus who chose the method by which he would delay the Minbari warrior. Invoking a battle to the death
was certainly a way to get his attention, and to channel all that “repressed anger” that Neroon felt against the
humans into something that would divert his attention away from the ceremony. Can we seriously expect
that anything less would have been sufficient to keep Neroon from storming into the ceremonial chamber?

Marcus has a chance at a relationship with Susan. He has caught her imagination, and that is waaaaaay
sexier, and longer lasting, than physical attraction. They are both passionate people, closet romantics tho
outwardly very tough. There would be some great pyrotechnics if they both decide to call it luv. <g>
The relationship actually has a chance of survival. Marcus tends to dissappear on Ranger business, giving
them a break whenever the relationship gets too intense. By the time he comes back, in 2 days or 2 weeks,
with a funny story or a trinket, Susan would be willing to begin again.

let him know the timing was not appropriate with “The Look.” She *didn’t* tell him she’d rip his lungs out

I got the feeling that “The Look” was more like “oh, gimme a break” or “don’t be ridiculous” than “I’m
gonna rip your lungs out, boy”. It also seems that she was taking his suggestion of learning Minbari

This post is an outgrowth of a disscusion I stumbled into in the Cafe on Saturday about everybodies
favorite ranger being a zealot. I actually thought about it and came to this conclusion:
No Marcus is not a zealot. The reasons are obvious. First the fact that he is compassionate towards those
around him and that he is even aware that there is more to life than just his struggle against the Shadows.
His pursuit of Ivanova is a wonderful example, as is his concern for those who live in Down-Below. A
zealot would only see his cause and do whatever it took to achieve it. These pursuits don’t fit that pattern.

Sorry I got interupted and this got posted prematurely. Anyway to continue.
Marcus has an idea what his life is worth and who he would be willing to sacrifice it for. Someone had said
that his proof that Marcus was a zealot came from G17IM during the battle when Marcus quotes “we live
for the One and we die for the One.” but to me the whole statement has much more meaning. Cole has just
been asked why he is coming to Delenn’s defense. His answer is that he is a Ranger this is a part of his life
and who he is, and in questioning that Neroon gave Marcus a more serious blow than any with his pike
during that battle. Marcus had only one responce, and what he said sounded to me like the oath all the
Rangers have given. His willingness to sacrifice to defend others is comperable to Sheridan’s final moments
in Za’ha’dum.
Okay I’m done now

I don’t see Marcus as a zealot either — he’s not trying to surpress anyone’s beliefs or cultures, he’s not trying
to recruit anyone into becoming a Ranger and he’s got more to his life than *just* following the One. (Like
following Ivanova, who is the One for him, but in a different way). The Rangers work behind the scenes
and seem to do it out of love of life, not lust for glory or blood — remember, it comes from Minbari
tradition, not human. I don’t think a fanatic would last long in the ranks — I don’t see any Entil’zha allowing
that to happen…

don’t like the hair, too modern and not timeless as it was before. The fluffy hair cuts the edge of darkness
that he had before. Anyway, my husband(english major that he is) remarked that marcus’ duel with the
Minbauri warrior was similar to the story of Galahad and the Green Knight. With the Mimbauri(hate
forgetting names) realizing the his and the Rangers honor and dedication. Marcus’ “lack of involvement”
ahem also allows him to have the courtly love of a knight.

Actually, I would bet he probably *hasn’t* been in the position to lose his virginity too much. The woman
he cared greatly about was killed in the Shadow attack on his home planet (and we don’t know how old he
was when this happened), and immediately afterward he began training to become a Ranger (which, from
what we’ve seen, seems to be akin to becoming a warrior monk). Somehow I don’t get the impression that
life for the Rangers on Minbari was wine, women, and song (wouldn’t Londo just hate it!).

First, let me say that Philly is two weeks behind everyone else, so I haven’t seen the episode yet. but I
couldn’t wait; had to read the spoilers. (Thanks, folks–it eases the withdrawal symptoms.)

Now, about Marcus being a virgin…am I the only female who would love to volunteer? I mean, talk about
space babes…

Actually, I don’t think Marcus and Ivanova are a good match. I’ve given this a lot of thought. Marcus, it
seems to me, is drawn to Susan because she is so different from him. Despite all he has been through, he is
still capable of being joyous and silly. He has a very childlike air about him. “Ranger” aside, he reminds me
more of the elves in LOTR than he does Strider. The elves have many things to mourn, yet they are still full
of joy. So I think the stern, rather melancholy air Susan has would depress him after a time. Don’t get me
wrong; I admire Ivanova. I’d enjoy having her as a friend. But her melancholy aura makes me sad for her.

Any thoughts?

I think the fact that Marcus and Ivanova are so different is what makes it a good match…..good partners
complement each other, teach each other….we have strengths where our partners are weaker, and our
partner’s strengths where we are weaker help shore us up. Ivanova can gain a better perspective on life
from Marcus, I think—I don’t think she will end up depressing him. She has a natural good sense of humor
that I believe Marcus can draw out of her, to help her see the good in situations instead of the bad. Ivanova
can teach Marcus to stand fast without charging headfirst into things–which isn’t always a bad thing, but can
lead to trouble.

Thanks to those who agreed with me about Marcus’ similarity to Legolas in LOTR.

Tryel, dear, “First Knight” bears scant similarity to the Arthurian legend of literature. Oh, the May-
December romance is there, and the young friend stealing his mentor’s wife; but all similarity ends there.
Try reading Malory, or Geoffrey of Monmouth, if you have the Latin. Even White’s version will do; it is
certainly closer than “First Knight.” A good modern version from a feminist perspective (and I know how
the younger generation just loves that perspective) is Marion Zimmer Bradley’s “The Mists of Avalon.” Or,
if you like, rent the film “Excalibur.” Any of these will provide a more accurate perspective on the character
Lancelot in literature and legend.

But do look into at least one of the alternatives I mention. Marcus is absolutely NOTHING like Lancelot.
And in fact, he does rather resemble Galahad; his isolation while in Ranger training somewhat parallels
Galahad’s having been raised in the forest by his half-mad mother. The major difference between Lancelot
and Galahad in relation to a similarity to Marcus is that unlike Marcus, Lancelot would have found the time
while in training to lose his virginity if it had suited him to do so. Galahad, like Marcus, did not. He knew
there were more important things to attend to.

I congratulate you on your interest in literature, but try to learn a bit more about the background of a story
before you form an opinion or draw parallels.

So, Marcus is not trying to get someone elses significant other. He still has the honor thing down, and the

there.

“Getting someone else’s significant other” is not the central issue. Honor and loyalty? To whom was
Lancelot loyal? Certainly not to Arthur, his liege lord. And honor? Is it honorable to throw aside one’s vow
of knightly chastity? Galahad adhered to the vows he made, whereas Lancelot did not. And in that respect,
Marcus does indeed parallel Galahad. Now, in most of the stories, Galahad is also a total prig about those
vows; definitely not like Marcus, who is very sweet and down to earth.

Drawing parallels and making comparisons is part of the fun of B5; those of us who love literature delight
in spotting the many references to literary themes. The real point I was trying to make is that we shouldn’t
talk about subjects with which we are unfamiliar. Today in the chat room some people were talking about
books by (I believe) Terry Brooks, the “Shannara” books (I may have that spelling wrong, too). I did not
join in the conversation because I haven’t read the books. And I don’t see what’s so mean and harsh about
that.

was very much like how I see Marcus. Lance was a very tragic figure in the legends, and I feel sorry for
him, but I don’t really see Marcus as Galahad because in both Mallory and the other Arthurian tales he has
no personality or humanity really. If we are going to pick a fictional comparision for Marcus from fantasy
liturature I’d have to say Pug ConDoin from the Riftwar saga or Laurie from the same.

(You know, you’ve got a point there…Marcus IS a bit like Michael Palin as Galahad…LOL)

…now, class is in session…

>>I just happened to be flipping channels when First Knight came on HBO. No Marcus isn’t Galahad, he’s

At least like the one in the movie. I know that First Knight is only barely based on The Arthurian Legends,

Apparently it is okay to flatly contradict some people on these message boards, but not others. The second
sentence in the quote above is a clear negation of an earlier writer’s assertion that Marcus bears a similarity
to Galahad. It is not stated in a manner suggesting that it is the author’s opinion. It is a declarative sentence;
a statement of “fact”.

>>I happen to have read Mallory thank you. And I stated as much that First Knight is barely based on the

Tryel<<

So. Lancelot is a tragic figure. Are we talking tragedy in the Aristotelian sense? Because the generally
accepted interpretation of the “Poetics” discussion of tragic protagonists requires the hero to have a flaw
that brings about the destruction of everyone around him (“King Lear” is considered a classic illustration of
a tragedy in the Aristotelian sense). What, then, was Lancelot’s tragic flaw? For that matter, what is Marcus’
tragic flaw?

It seems to me that this interpretation would make Sheridan the more appropriate tragic hero of the story, as
Arthur is the tragic hero of the Arthurian cycle. One could certainly draw a parallel between Arthur as
leader and Sheridan as leader. But if this is the case, what is Sheridan’s tragic flaw?

Being a relative newcomer to the B5 universe, and certainly a newcomer to this site, I am not yet privy to
the innermost thoughts of JMS. So I was COMPLETELY unaware that B5 was intended to be a tragedy. I
thought it was a tv show; I thought it was supposed to be FUN. Thought-provoking fun, yes, but still fun.

(By the way, I mention in another message that Galahad and Marcus are similar in some ways, but
dissimilar in others; Galahad was actually a bit of a prig, which Marcus definitely is not. Try reading what a
person says before you comment, why don’t you?)

To think this all started because I was defending someone who had made a very good point…You wanna
know what’s REALLY funny? I went back and read the first message, and it isn’t GALAHAD who fights the
Green Knight, darling, it’s Gawaine! And I didn’t even pick that up at first! But the similarity as first drawn
is still an excellent one; now, if you wanted to compare him to Gawaine, I’d have to debate that one. I mean,
can you imagine Marcus riding the length and breadth of England with the head of a lady he’d slain in a fit
of temper attached to his saddle?

Well, class dismissed. I’m tired now; it is so tiring, having to EXPLAIN things to people…as a relative of
mine recently said, “the only bad thing about being infallible is having to put up with other people’s
mistakes…”

(That is irony, for those unfamiliar with the concept. I was POKING FUN at MYSELF. Laughing at one’s
self: feels good. Try it sometime.)

First of all Please do not call me dear, you are not my mother, or any other realtion that would be allowed to

Galahad also had not once ounce of humanity or romance in his soul so I don’t see why he would have
bother were as Marcus besides having the courtly side to him has a flamboyent roguish side that Galahad
never expressed. Galahad was a two dimesional figure created to serve one purpose which was the Grail
quest. Marcus on the other had has much more depth and brillance to his person. Also on the account of
Marcus not having time. He did, Since you said you are new to b5 I’m not sure if you have see this episode,
but Marcus tells Delenn in Ceremonies of Light and Dark that there was someone he was quite fond
of…Marcus could of had a physical relatioship with her but did not for the most noble reason of all, she
wasn’t the one.
<What, then, was Lancelot’s tragic flaw? For that matter, what is Marcus’ tragic flaw?>
As we know Lancelot’s tragic flaw was that he became the door through which tragedy entered Camelot,
and destroyed it. By stealing to France with Arthur’s queen he allowed Morded the chance to divide and
conqure. Marcus’s tragic flaw is the fact that he feels responsible for the deaths of those around him, his
family and friends on the colony and in those chains is his greatest weakness. Marcus fears letting those he
cares for down, and will risk anything to stop that fate from happening. The character also seems know the
value of his life because he knows who he is willing to sacrifice it for…he expects Sheridan to send him out
to take on the Shadows in Messages from Earth, he commits to Den-sha with Neroon even though he knows
it might kill him, and last but not least is his willingness to take Sinclair’s place in taking B4 back to the past
even though it would seperate him from all those he cares about.
<It seems to me that this interpretation would make Sheridan the more appropriate tragic hero of the story,

Actually the best comparrison I’ve seen is Sheridan as the Red Cross Knight especially when you put
Delenn in the role of Una and Anna as Duessa. ( BTW Spencer’s the Faire Queen is another one jms has

Lancelot did have a tragic flaw. Her name was Gwyenhafar. The whole Round Table was destroyed
because of his betrayal and Arthur was never quite the same afterwards.

First Knight was one of the *worst* pretenses of non-Arthurian b.s I’ve ever seen — so much so, it scared
me.

Galahad was a stupid prig who was very proud of the fact that he remained chaste. I suspect Our Marcus
would give his eye teeth not to be — as long as it was with Susan. 😉

Anybody else out there ever see a really neat BBC series about Robin Hood? Being hopelessly senile, I
can’t seem to remember the name of it (unless it was just called “Robin Hood” which it very well might have
been). It starred an actor named Michael Praed (who was later on “Dynasty”); he left the series, and the role
of Robin was taken over by Jason Connery (yes, Sean’s son; and every bit as adorable as his dad). The
series had very strong mystical overtones, and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if at least one of the developers
of the series was a pagan.

Anyway, it was on PBS in the Philadelphia area a few years back, and I taped many of the episodes. If you
love that sort of thing, check it out. It’s worth a look.

Now, my Susan and Marcus theory….

Ivonava is wrapped way tight (but we all know that). I think she knows deep down that Marcus could be
the one who really really gets to her…she’s holding him at arms length cause this scares her in a big way.
He’ll eventually get thru the barriers….I think.

In the mean time I think the revelation that he is a virgin pretty much makes him the most romantic
character (good looking, witty, sincere, strong, brave) of all time! Count me in the Marcus Cole fan club!

Roverup, that’s the series we were talking about. I think in the US it’s called “Robin Hood” and in the UK it
was “Robin of Sherwood”. Michael Praed was in the first two seasons (11 episodes) then left to come to the
states to be in what turned out to be an awful career move by getting a part in the ill-fated “Three
Musketeers” musical (which didn’t last 2 performances on Broadway but also starred a then unknown Brent
Spiner as well) His role was taken over by Jason Connery (yes, son of Sean). The fandom is alive and well
though floundering a bit. I think at our peak, we had like 200-250 people in the official fan club. There is an
annual convention held out in Michigan and Mark Ryan (the guy who played Nasir the Saracen) is almost
always there. I haven’t gone in the last two years but it’s always a nice intimate convention. There is also a
boffo website done by my friend Carol (who also does the Xena web page).

also, anna, i loved your call about susan and marcus–i think you may be right–she is holding him at arm’s

i’d like to apologize for my “tutorial” tone in previous postings. i’ve been studying the arthurian legends for
my entire adult life; in fact, i majored in english in college, specializing in very early literature, for that very
reason. i also minored in archeology, in the hopes of someday going to britain and searching for evidence of
the historical figure upon whom the legends are based. and, to make matters worse (ie, to make me even
stuffier than i am by nature), i also minored in literary theory and criticism, and i tend to compartmentalize
all books, tv, films, etc, according to the “Poetics” of Aristotle and the strict definitions of tragedy discussed
therein.

so there i was, ranting and raving about “it’s only a tv show” and all the time, i’m the one pontificating! what
an ego!

(you know, i mentioned to another fan that since i got my hair cut short, i look like Marcus–without the
beard, i hasten to add!!!
…but maybe i’m really related to Cartagia…i have to go talk to the heads of state now…)

Uh huh. (sorry, old Rocky Horror habits die hard :-) ) I don’t find it *that* surprising. Marcus was from a
small mining colony that was wiped out by the Shadows. He immediately became a Ranger and I suspect
Ranger Training school doesn’t give you a lot of time to, er, frolic. For all his quick wit and sharp tongue, I
think he’s a serious young man. Also, perhaps he believed in the age old warrior creed that chastity
promoted a purer soldier (i.e warrior monks). Now we know what all that repression is all about. :-) Also,
it doesn’t sound like he actually has managed to *have* a relationship with anyone. It may not be so much a
planned thing as poor timing. He did say there was another woman once, but she died — perhaps he never
got around to winning her over before this? As weird as it may sound, I’ve met plenty of people who while
perhaps not virginal have had really bad karma in the love department and spent looooong periods of time
celibate because they didn’t want to have a quick fling with anyone — they were looking for a real
relationship — myself included.

<< Can anyone think of a legend or myth or fairy tale that JMS HAS NOT used somewhere in this saga? >>

How about “The Water Babies”? It’s a story about a chimney sweep who falls into a river and drowns, and
is magically transformed into a sort of water fairy. The Water Babies are cared for by Mrs. Do-As-You-
Would-Be-Done-By and Mrs. Be-Done-By-Yas-You-Did, who are sort of “clockwork” automatons (and it
never is explained why), who have an ongoing pair of “good-cop/ bad-cop” roles. The Water Babies do
good deeds (underwater) and help the fish.

And if somebody tries to relate THIS to being “cared for” by the Vorlons and the Shadows, believe me,
they’re REACHING!

Found this on lurkers: Thought it might be interesting
<[[12/11]] “In WHTMG, Marcus is talking to G’Kar about his friends and says he’s had “Damn
few of them, and most of them are dead.” My instant reaction was “That can’t be an allusion to
Return to Zork.” Can it?”
Y’know, if I were to read this group as an outsider, I’d think that this jms person was
incapable of coming up with a single line on his own.
NO, it wasn’t a Zork reference, for chrissakes. Can we possibly get any more obscure here? I
don’t even know what this REFERS to. Marcus came from a mining colony. The shadows
struck, and killed everyone there. Hence, the line above.
There was some goofing around with SF references early on in the show; this got out of hand,
and it stopped. I don’t sit here, thinking, “Oh, goody, I can make a reference to The Day The
Earth Stood Still here,” or some other show. I write what is appropriate for the character to
say. Period.
I’m sorry if I’m a bit cranky in answering this, but jesus christ, people, give it a rest and stop
looking for references that don’t exist. There are only so many permutations in the english
language, and something has got to echo somewhere for everyone…but that ain’t the source.
As a writer, you work your brains out trying to come up with something, and you try your
damndest to make it original, and fresh, and interesting…do you have any idea how
infuriating, how maddening, how bottomlin *insulting* it is to have 10,000 people parsing
every sentence and saying, “Oh, here, did you take this from that? Is this a reference to this
over here?”
NO, IT’S NOT.
I allowed a little of that in the first season or so, often in scripts by other people, on a
couple of occasions by myself, but that’s the end of it, because everyone decided that the
show was one big easter egg hunt. Fanfic is full of this stuff, which is perhaps why everyone
keeps looking for it here.
If it’s an absolutely blantant, and extremely recognizeable line, like the Tolkein reference in
year two’s “Geometry,” then yeah…but some of this is getting so obscure and ridiculous that
it’s starting to make me crazy.
Can we *please* declare a moratorium on this for a while?>

I was recently at a con and I met a dealer from England who told me she recently met him. Hejust did a

I think that Rangers don’t have a real tight structure. They all independent operators most of he time,
answering directly to Delenn. There certainly doesn’t seem to be any command layer between her and the
rest of the Rangers.

Marcus just appears to be another Ranger who exceptionally close to Delenn, and trusted by her.

Let me modify that. During “The Long Twilight Struggle” Delenn said that the Rangers in that sector were
under her command. That means that between the Rangers and Entil’zah there is at least one level of
regional commanders.

Marcus does seem to have some kind of authority in the Rangers; in a few Season Three episodes he was
seen to be gathering reports from other Rangers. How far that authority extends is a mystery, but he IS the
only Ranger that talks to and works with Sheridan and / or Delenn on a regular basis. Excluding the
original White Star’s crew. And Lennier, of course.

Also in the Summoning Marcus seems to have some sort of athority because if you listen to the

someone in the higher echelons of the Rangers command structure would ask that. I’m betting we’ll see

Hmmmnnn. I don’t see Marcus as Lancelot, Galahad, or Gawain. I see him more as
Gareth/Beaumains(sp?) fighting to get his lady Lynette. It’s been a long time since I read the story so I
could be wrong.
Other notes for old posts:1) The Templars were based in France at the end. They were the BIGGEST
bunch of moneylenders. The final Grandmaster, one Jaque DeMolay, was a thug who threw his weight
around. Not that Phillip the King of France, the person responsible for the destruction of the Templars, was
an angel. The Templars still exist by the way, they’re called the Masons.
2) I am male and I find the character of Marcus to be interesting. I think the reason most men don’t like
him, is the fact that it is somewhat difficult to pull off the romantic/adventurous/ mysterous kinda thing. So
we get huffy and jealous and call him a wuss. Good Enough???

Ivanova needs to be less serious. She does not smile much in the show even when she’s around Marcus.
Does’nt she know that she’s being woed by a very romantic Marcus. I know she’s supposed to be tough but

All Marcus has said so far is, “It’s a Minbari fighting pike, and you’re just jealous because you don’t have
one.” No indication that he has nicknamed it something like “Old Betsy” or “Krona.”

Did you ever happen to think that perhaps her attraction to Talia was purely an implanted suggestion
from Talia’s alternate personality? I mean, the other Talia may have just been trying to get closer to the
chain of command, and Susan was an easy target.

So… does Marcus have a name for them…?(heh, heh, heh… Sick Puppies Club Member, here… <g>)
Dunno… maybe King George, or Randy Andy or some such. <snicker>

Tho’ I did burst out laughing when he told G’Kar that he had Pike-el envy. Then when G’Kar popped the
pike open & said, “… I *like* it.” Bwa-ha-ha-ha!

I lije the suggestion of the loin cloth, but in keeping w/the simplicity of his Ranger uniform… how ’bout
Calvin Klein-like brief shorts? (Smacking lips in anticipation of laundry day.)

I don’t think he’d be the boxer type. Leave the boxers to Ivanova. Wouldn’t that be a hoot? When they
finally get together (thinking hopefully) after disrobing, having a good laugh. Whata tension breaker…
especially for Marcus’ 1st time.

I have way too much time to think about this kinda stuff… Waiting for new episodes…

Marcus: “What?”
Ivanova: “Just curious.”
Marcus: “Well, it’s kind of embarassing, really. In the great Shadow attacks where I lost my family and all

I hope they find a good use for them against Pres. Clark and the like. There is such a strong infrastructure
(they’re everywhere!), with the exception of the Minbari parts (who could never get through Night Watch!)
But when the fight comes about…the Minbari would be one Heck of a great group to have on ones side.

For my own personal reasons, I hope that Marcus ends up with someone…if he ends up alone by the end,
now that would push me over the edge! (everyone needs hope that there is someone out there for them)

…If not Ivanova, then at least a Ranger…What a child two Rangers could make…She would be “Pike-el”

The other races don’t need a ‘Peace Corp’, whose job in reality is to bring progress to uncivilized
societies and return better understanding of less modern (to be PC) cultures. None of these other races, all
of whom have Space Travel Capability already, need someone to come and teach them. What they do need
is a Corp of Engineers to come and help the fallen planets rebuild.
Besides, I think the Rangers are going to be needed to prevent alot of wars. The Narn are already talking
of going to Centauri Prime to wreak revenge. And you can bet alot of the other races will be starting new
wars and c having civil wars, besides Earth.

I did say Peace Corp *type* didn’t I? And what I ment by that was the Rangers should help with
terraforming ops on Narn. Also helping those races who survived the Vorlon and Shadow planet killers to
find new worlds to settle, help reunite families during the war.
Okay how about this as an explanation:
a Peace Corps/Red Cross/Civil defense <B5> added to their already exsisting jobs?

Although I don’t think they’re suited to terraforming type operations, more the work of Military
Engineers, I think your idea of helping the displaced beings of the war is a great idea, more picking up the
emotional pieces than the physical ones. I still hope they help Sheridan in the defense of B5 against the

Subj: Phoenix Convention

From: Scotty7777
Posted on: America Online

Jason Carter made his first U.S. convention appearance yesterday here in Phoenix. He was extremely
entertaining and very funny for the 40 minutes that Creation gave him to be on stage. Then he spent several
hours signing autographs for everyone in the place. He told a number of funny stories like his side of the
practical joke that Bill Mumy and JMS played on him (when they told him that Marcus had been killed off
and kept the joke going for hours!). When asked if he would ever seek revenge, he noted that it probably
wasn’t a good idea to play practical jokes on ones boss, citing as an example the joke that Jurrasic and
Katsulas played on JMS at the big B5 con back in November and the revenge that JMS got on them
subsequently (I won’t give away that story as JMS has been promising to tell it at his next big con and I
don’t want to spoil it for him). Suffice it to say that he got Andreas and Peter pretty good! 😀

For those of you who have asked such things, Carter reported that he was born in 1960 (making him 36 or
37, depending on when his birthday falls), that 16 years ago he went to LAMDA (London Academy of
Music and the Dramatic Arts) where he learned how to do stage fighting with rapier and dagger, which
helped prepare him for this role. He told about doing Romeo and Juliet on a stage that was too short and
backing off the stage in the middle of his monologue–but not missing a beat as he continued while pulling
himself back up onto the stage. He also sang a full verse of “The Modern Major General” from Pirates of
Penzance and did a smashing job of it! It ties in somehow with the upcoming “Atonement” but since I
haven’t seen it yet, I didn’t get that part of it. If you see him at a con, ask him to sing it for you as he’s very
good!

When asked if he liked Star Trek, he said yes, he liked it very much and thought it was silly for 2 shows in
the same genre to compete in any way. The question was asked by a little girl about 5 years old and in the
midst of his answer he referred to such “bullsh**” and then realized that he was talking to a small child. He
assumed a posture of mortification and retracted the word changing it to “bullpoo” much to the amusement
of everyone!

All in all, it was an outstanding con appearance and Jason was so good that it made up for having to put up
with 40 minutes of Marina Sirtis right after him (when asked if she liked Babylon 5, she looked towards
back stage and whispered “that’s the show he’s on, right?” We said yes so she said “Oh it’s a wonderful
show!” She’s said at other cons that she doesn’t like any of the current series (DS9, Voyager, B5) so she
only said that for his benefit.) I could have done without her and more of Jason instead. . .oh well. 😀

If Jason comes to your area, don’t miss him!

<<OK. If the ranger are still fuctioning, why didn’t Sheraton send Marcus and the Doc in a Whitestar to
Mars? Earth force could never catch a Whitestar ship!>>

Well, there’s a minor problem with sending a White Star…it’ll more than likely be seen. Earth System is
likely heavily defended and watched, and if the ship itself can avoid sensors surely its jump gate will be
detected. Even if White Star is not caught, it may be forced to fight or flee before reaching its target, and at
the very least would let Clarke and Earth Force know that Sheridan was up to something. Whereas if they
sneak in through normal traffic, it may take a bit longer but they’ll have a better chance of slipping in
undetected.

The Whitestar ships would be easy to spot by earth forces…besides if they did take a Whitestar then the
writers couldn’t put that cute little scene in at the end…

Why not send them in a White Star? It’s simple military theory. When you send special operations types
into a hot zone, such as Mars, right under Earth’s nose, you do it discretely. For instance, if you’re going to
send a SEAL Team into a combat zone, they deploy from an aircraft at high altitude, many miles from the
target, at night, and paraglide in. It would be faster to take them right to the nearest airport on a C-5, but
they’d probably be noticed.
Secret mission, best kept secret.

Hi–I’m new to this.
Just went to AgamenCon in Costa Mesa. Jason was very much as Scotty7777 told it in Pheonix. He’s a
very charming person with a great wit. We even talked him into reciting some of his poetry–it’s pretty
funny.

What ever became of the idea to start a Ranger group? Has that died in the dust??

I just started to watch Babylon 5 this year. I loved Garibaldi and G’Arn (affectionately known as
Lizardman). I forced my teenage daughters to watch the show with me. They loved them too. They missed
a show and missed Jason Carter. I told them he was to die for. But, what do I know..I’m their grizzled
mother. They watched the following week and they all agreed, that he was to die for. We love the fact that
he is saving himself for the right woman. It is great to have Prince Charming alive and well on Babylon 5.
He is delightful to the eyes and refreshingly romantic. In regards to his wearing a red bikini under his
robes..I have to agree with the rest of you!! I haven’t laughed this hard in a long time!! Does this guy ever
read this board?!!! LOL!!!
My daughter would just like to add that speedo is the best kind of bikinis that man could wear!!! No it
shouldnt be red…she says it should be tight fitting CLEAR!!!! LOL Sorry..lost control of my keyboard to
my 17 year old daughter. Jason Carter if you ever see my teenage daughter on the street…RUN!!!!!!! This
kid is a church going kid!! LOL!!!!!!

Posted for Brian Walz
ATTENTION!

After several weeks of fighting that is best left to the reader’s
imagination, I have gotten my ISP to create a Church Of Joe mailing list
for me. After spending the past day or two getting it set up, I am now
ready to announce it to the world. (Or, rather, you fine people at first
to get the ball rolling and then the world in a few weeks…)

Now, you notice that it is called the Church Of Joe mailing list, but is
it just for that? No, it is for any and all sub-churches too. (Which at
this time is just the Shrine Of Garibaldi.) So, this is a place for those
who worship Joe and the G-mon too.

I have always wanted this to happen, but recent events have made me move
up my schedule. With all the potential problems that the Line Tales on AOL
might cause, we needed a place to take them, or risk losing them. So, I
created this mailing list.

For those of you who don’t know what a mailing list is, I will explain.
And for those who do, skip this section…

A mailing list is just like a message area on AOL except that it is
carried out in e-mail. You write messages and send them to the list,
and anyone who is subscribed gets a copy. When you reply to messages,
unless you change the reply-to address, everyone in the group gets a
copy. It will show up in your mailbox just like regular e-mail, except
that in the subject line you will see [COJ-List] to show you that it is
a message from/to the list.

Now the great thing about this is that, unlike the AOL message areas,
you can’t just stumble in by accident. Have have to join. Therefore Joe
can’t accidentally see something that might be considered a story idea, he
would have to deliberately come looking for it. (And we know he wouldn’t
do that.) So, the line tales can continue.

I hope to see a lot of you join. Here is how you do it… Send email to

majordomo@pacifier.com

with the following text in the body of the message…

subscribe coj-list

that is all there is to it. Don’t worry about the subject line, it gets
ignored. All that is important is the body text.

And as for the Ranger group. Send me your ideas and names. I’m willing to ride herd on it if I get some

If you’re up to handling the Rangers, count me in. Question: Do you think it may be possible, sometime in
the (near) future, that the Rangers might be able to get involved in some worthwhile projects, as individuals
or as a group? It would be nice to be able to do more than just say how great the show is–a little positive
PR in the mundane world wouldn’t hurt—maybe even soften the view of our being ‘wierdos’. Do things like
Walk for March of Dimes or Revlon’s Walk for Women’s Cancers, etc., wearing either Ranger outfits or B5
t-shirts, or making teddy bears/quilts for sick/homless kids. Just a thought.

Next time Jason is at a con, get him to tell you about what he was doing when the Northridge quake hit.
Funny story–almost at funny as Bill Cosby’s about riding out the Silmar quake in ’71.

My cat is trying to “help” me type. I have a funny way of looking at Jason/Marcus. Jason is a married
man–off limits; Marcus is not—-so I like Jason, but am in lust over Marcus (I know, Jason is Marcus;
however, Marcus will never be Jason). My brother says its my left-handed thinking.

Gotta run. I’m costuming Sound of Music for the local little theater. Talk to you later.

There aren’t any patterns for the Ranger costume—yet. Let me get a few good pictures and I can draft one
up/make pattern notes—-Most of the fabric used is availabe around the L.A. area–mostly at Int’l Silk and
Wool (very expensive, but will give discounts [somtimes] to fans). I can check the garment district area for
viable substitutes. Can’t do it immediate immediate; however, will do ASAP–gotta get Sound of Music
outta my hair first–in two weeks–yeesh. ds mn (Kitty typing) I’ll keep my eyes open for possibilities as I
hit the shops in the garment district for SoM. Friend, Kathy Pillsbury, does B5 uniforms, has business–
check Star Trek/Star Wars groups for her e-mail. She’ll send you a catalog with prices. Oh yes, I don’t
usually charge anything for the pattern notes–they aren’t my designs–just postage. I’ll post when I have the
pattern notes ready.

Actually it’s not such a surprise. Science Fiction costuming is a rather specialized interest–not very
mainstream, with the exception of ST-TNG uniforms for Halloween from McCall’s(?). None of the big
patternmakers see any profit in it. Most studios don’t want to put the money into drafting up the various
sizes, etc. for only a few hundred or thousand fans—no profit in it–more in toys. So, it is left to a few
intrepit (crazy) fans with some sort of expertise to work out the patterns. Most likely, I will make it as easy
for everyone as I can and show how to adapt a few commercial patterns to achieve the Ranger look. For
those parts that I cannot do so, I will either draft out a multi-size pattern or will include a scaled model in
the pattern notes for you to draft out yourself.

Anyway, it’s mid-night and time for me to turn into a pumpkin. The SoM costuming crunch is starting to hit
me–we open in 10 days.

Talk to y’all later.

And well the White Stars SHOULD win, since, now that the First ones are gone, they are the most advanced
ships in the galaxy (That we know of). They are easily faster, more maneuverable, Heavier armored (thanks
to the vorlon defense system) , and probably better armed than any ship of their size.

In case you heard a rumor Sci Fi Dreaming was cancelled, please note that the rumor is FALSE! It’s still on,
and Jason Carter is still the scheduled B5 guest.

Finally, next week Marcus returns. It should be interesting to see how well Marcus and Stephen survived
the trips to Mars. Anyone wanna take bets that Stephen duck taped Marcus’s mouth shut. <JK>

MilydeJ—
Well I have found more interest in the Ranger uniforms..a chat buddy and myself are seriously thinking
about something like that for “The conspiracy of Light” next May..we will be forced to beg and plead on
our hands and knees for the patterns..

Thanks for taking the time to do this :-)

Do you mean next month?

We just opened the show tonight. I’ve still a couple of costumes to finish, then will be free for a month to
pursue the Ranger designs. I’ll get to them as fast a I can–really. Let the know the date you need them by
and in what sizes and I’ll try my best.

Whew!

Well the Sound of Music opened last night. Tonight a newspaper reviewer came. I suppose tomorrow,
we’ll find out how he like it. I just managed to finish the girls’ sailor outfits minutes before they were due on
stage tonite—nothing like no sleep and an adernalin(sp?) rush. I’ve a few minor things to fix/change and
this costuming job will be done. Now to finish the RenFaire outfit and I’ll be home free for a month.

I’ll check out where to get the plaid/check fabric that is used. Heck, I’ll check out where to get all of the
fabrics and get the prices for them too. I’ll try to give all of the the exact type of fabric and the exact colors
used. It is in the nature of the beast that cameras frequently photograph the colors slightly different than
actuality. A good example is on the new uniforms. That little triangle of “Mimbari Silk” that looks to be a
gray is really a drab olive-green that on the bolt was described at Taupe (Ha!). It’s a square-on-square
upholstrey fabric. When I get a chance, I’m going down to Michael Levine’s in the L.A. Garment District
and checking to see if they have any—I seem to recall seeing it there in blue at one time. But I digress.
What I’m saying is that the colors that I recommend to you will be the actual asyouseeitinperson colors and
not whatitappearstobe camera colors. However, some colors may be harder to do than others. Costumers,
especially studio costumers, love to change the “tone” of a color by running it thru the dye vat, and they
won’t always tell you what color they used to “tone” the original color—if they remember. Bill Tice(?) of
Star Trek was noted for doing that. And I’m probably telling you more about costumes than you wanted to
know and not enough about Ranger uniforms. Think of this as groundwork–the beginning of the prep work
for doing the uniforms.

It’s after mid-night and I’m beginning to get a little zonky from lack of sleep. I’ll talk to y’all again later.

MilydeJ.

Hi, folks!

The Babylon 5 Cast & Crew message board only holds 50 folders (topics). We maintain the boards at 50
folders so there’s room for new folders to be created. When a new folder is created, or a folder is filled to
capacity with 450 posts, we archive and delete the folder. We wanted to let you know that we’ve archived
the Marcus & The Rangers folder to which you all contributed. The archive will be available in the
Transcripts and Logs Library in a few days.

Thanks for your interest in Babylon 5!
